www.beloitcall.com Serving the Solomon Valley since 1901 HUTCHINSON – On Sunday, Sept. 13, Hutchinson police arrested Wayne Sprague, 25, Beloit on aggravated battery charges. On Monday, Sept. 21, Sprague was charged by the state for aggravated burglary, two counts of aggravated battery, criminal threat and possession of methamphetamine. Around 7 a.m. Sunday morning, Nikki Wornkey of Hutchinson found a strange man in her home. According to the Hutchinson Post, Mrs. Wornkey ran to her bedroom where her husband Bobbie was still sleeping. The stranger followed her and allegedly forced her onto the bed and began to choke her. Mr. Wornkey awoke at that time and struggled with the man. Officers arrived and arrested Sprague and transported him to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was checked and transported to the Reno County Correctional Facility. Sprague told Judge Joe McCarville via video from the jail that he thought he was being chased and was going to be killed so he went into the Wornkey home to hide. He said he did not intend to rob anyone. Spague’s bond is set at $60,000. He is scheduled to reappear in court on Oct. 14. WICHITA – Mankato high school 1980 graduate Major Dan Hesket and Law Enforcement Division assistant director for the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism’s (KDWPT), was awarded the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators’ (NASBLA) Bonner Award on September 15. The prestigious award was presented to Hesket during the 56th Annual NASBLA Conference, held in Wichita, Sept. 13-16. Hesket attended Fort Hays State University and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Education and Biology in 1985. He earned a Masters Degree in Biology in 1988. He is the son of Judy Hesket Bingham and the late Gary Hesket, Mankato. He has three sisters, Debbie Carl, North Platte, Neb.; Diana Sanpaka, Anthony and Sharon Sahlfeld, Beloit. Hesket received the award just after a training exercise that took place at Cheney Lake on Sept. 12. Duriong the exercise, game wardens trained on how to deal with an active shooter while on a boat. Officers and game wardens from across the country came to the lake for training. This was a first time training through the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Marine Division and the KDWPT Law Enforcement Division. The National event attracted 23 officers. One signed up from Hawaii but his plane was delayed and he didn’t arrive in time. Others came as far as Washington, Minnesota, Arkansas, Texas and Colorado. “It was difficult to set up the training because of liability issues,” said Hesket. “We were using live ammunition and they had to close a section of the lake to do the training.” Mitchell County EMS Director Kelly Hawk requested permission from the county commissioners on Monday to purchase two new AutoPulse® Cardiac Support Pumps. This equipment will aid the EMS team in cardiac arrest situations while improving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Hawk explained these units are non-invasive cardiac support pumps. The patient is placed on a board-like unit and the band is wrapped around the chest. The pump delivers 20 percent chest cavity compressions, in place of the hand compressions made by a human EMS member. This not only frees up the EMS member to tend to other parts of the patient’s situation, but the unit never misses a beat and makes the exact necessary compression to the chest each time, Hawk said. “We could pretty much run a code with only one person in the back of the ambulance,” Hawk said. In 2014, Mitchell County EMS made 105 cardiac related calls, did CPR on seven patients and so far this year have went on 100 cardiac runs, making 24 percent of their runs cardiac related, Hawk said. This equipment may be used on persons over 18 years of age. The life band fits up to 52 inches and will aid patients up to 300 pounds on the board, Hawk said. The EMS Director also said Jewell county is using this equipment and they are very happy with the results. The cost to purchase two brand new units from ZOLL® with three batteries per unit is $31,681, according to a quote Hawk received. He found that he could purchase the two units through Enerspect with two batteries per unit, a one-year warranty and shipping & handling charges for $10,936. Enerspect has not used the units and original life bands are still in place Hawk A trooper with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said that if the wardens and officers were not trained to deal with a certain situation, they most likely would not be able to perform at their best. “There have been issues with people, guns and boats around Kansas lakes, and training is necessary to ensure officers can remain safe in dangerous situations,” said Hesket. Hesket has worked in the KDWPT’s Law Enforcement Division for 26 years and became a leader in the boating safety field while working a1990-92 at Wilson Reservoir early in his career. There, he worked with the local marina and boat businesses to promote safe boating and compliance of boating laws. Hesket produced several boating safety programs and created the first public hands-on Major Dan Hesket Wednesday, September 23, 2015 Post Rock District State Fair results I took early retirement and moved in with my son and daughter-in-law in order to help care for my five grandkids. At the time, my daughter-in-law was attending college and my son asked me to move in. I help pay the household expenses and also do the daily work around the house. All my son and his wife do is fight and makeup repeatedly. Their constant battles make the kids nervous. It has been horrible. Sometimes, it turns violent and someone gets hurt. My son constantly bullies the kids, his wife and me. I stand up to him, but my grandchildren are too young to do the same. My son came home drunk one evening and told me to get out of his house. He has no appreciation for how much I contribute both financially and physically to the care of his home and his children. I love my grandchildren and fear that without my presence, permanent damage will occur. I can find another place to live, but I am concerned about the grandkids. -- Out of Options If your son and his wife are likely to hurt the children or become drunk and abusive, you need to call the police and Child Protective Services to investigate. You can do so anonymously. If the authorities find there is a danger to the children, then the kids will be removed from the home. If you have already established another place of residence, then it’ s possible the children will be placed with you or another relative who can take them in. In the meantime, offer to take the kids as often as your son is willing to let you. It will give the parents time to cool off and de-stress, and allow the grandchildren to be in a more stable environment. Please don’ t hesitate to put the children’ s welfare first. You may be their last line of defense. My son and daughter-in-law were married a year ago. I recently discovered that they have not sent out thank-you cards to any of the guests, many of whom traveled a great distance to attend the wedding. Is there anything that can be done at his point to make amends? -- Conundrum in Canada While thankyou notes should be written as soon as possible, it is never too late to make amends. Your son and his wife should write each one by starting out, “ We apologize for the tardiness of this note, but we wanted to let you know how much we appreciated your wedding gift.” And then they should write something specific about each present they received. Rest assured, the recipients of these notes will be glad to get them, no matter how late. Many parents decide to take on this responsibility themselves, because their children are not only delinquent, but also unlikely to send any thank-you notes at all. While it is not the parents’ job to do this, we understand those who are mortified that their family and friends have not had their gifts acknowledged and wish to take on the burden themselves. That is entirely up to you. Annie’ s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Dear Editor: National Recovery month is an observance held every September to promote recovery for people with mental health or substance use disorders. The theme for Recovery Month 2015 is “ Join the Voices for Recovery: Visible, Vocal, Valuable.” The theme challenges individuals in recovery and their support systems to share their stories of recovery, to encourage those in the middle of recovery, and to promote the valuable lessons and experiences people in recovery can share. While recovery from a mental illness or substance use disorder can be challenging, there are several things a person can do to help in their own recovery efforts. According to information from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), people in recovery have a better chance of reaching their goals and feeling better if they participate in treatment or support groups. Research has also found that the lives of persons going through recovery are greatly improved if they themselves help others or share their recovery stories with others. The support of family, friends, and the community is also vital to those in recovery. For the past 59 years, Pawnee Mental Health Services has been a leader in providing treatment to those in recovery and in advocating for them on a community and state level. Please join us in celebrating recovery month by encouraging people you know who are going through recovery: let them know they are valuable, listen to their stories, and support community efforts to help all those in recovery! He also developed an officer training course, laying the groundwork for the use of the personal watercraft in boating law enforcement. In 1992, Hesket was promoted to a boating enforcement specialist position stationed near Wichita. In that capacity, he worked closely with KDWPT’s then boating law administrator, Jeff Gayer, to strengthen the boating under the influence (BUI) laws and get department personnel trained in Standard Field Sobriety Testing procedures. He wrote the BUI check-lane procedure manual in 1994 and took the lead in BUI detection efforts. In 2002, Hesket was promoted to assistant director in charge of the Law Enforcement Boating Program, and he immediately began work to improve the image of the recreational boating program. In 2004, Hesket became the state’s boating law administrator. That same year, he carried a bill to the Kansas Legislature, proposing extensive amendments to boating-related statutes and succeeded in getting the majority of them passed unscathed. The Bonner Award is a tribute to congressman Herbert C. Bonner of North Carolina, father of the Federal Boating Act of 1958. The award is presented to a government official for outstanding performance in the field of recreational boating safety. Any representative of state or federal government in active service or retired (living at the time of selection) is eligible for the award. Kansas Boating Officer/Game Warden Dennis Zehr of Wichita nominated Hesket for the award. “It caught me totally off guard because they don’t give that award out very often,” said Hesket. “I was in shock but very humbled and grateful that I have the opportunity to provide the services that I do in my career.” CLAY CENTER – The Beloit Lady Trojans tennis team competed in tournament on Saturday, Sept. 19 with the following results. #1 Singles Dakota Dedonder 0-4 Lost to Abigail Yemming Chapman 0-8 Lost to Rachel Williams Abilene 0-8 Lost to Krystan Plymeier Concordia 5-8 Lost to Hannah Callan Clay Center 0-8 #1 Doubles Abby Bean/Elyse Krier 0-4 Lost to Katie Fentmar/ Sallie Heiman Chapman 0-8 Lost to Belle Barberie/Sam Reiff Abilene 1-8 Lost to Kalhie Miller/Sadie Mosher Concordia 4-8 Lost to Paige Richardson/Hannah Fowles Clay Center 0-8 #2 Singles McKenna Trumble 1-3 Lost to Payton Holm Chapman 1-8 Lost to Kayle Coup Abilene 3-8 Defeated Skylar Mendenhall Concordia8-4 Lost to Chloe Gaug Clay Center 0-8 #2 Doubles Sidney Odle/Hailey Princ 1-3 Lost to Rachel Dauer/Brianna Loy Chapman 2-8 Lost to Marilyn Riffel/Kaylin Beswick Abilene 0-8 Defeated Jenna Fredrickson/Grace Tracy Concordia 8-2 Lost to Emma Girton/Jaden Wilcoxson Clay Center 2-8 Lady Trojans varsity will compete in the Concordia tournament on Thursday, Sept. 24 with a 1 p.m. start. Enerspect is a medical solutions company out of Nevada. The commissioners strongly encouraged Hawk to apply for a grant from the Dane G. Hansen foundation to help with costs for the units. “This looks like a good and wise purchase,” Commission Chairman Tom Claussen said. Hawk explained there are also monitors which can be used in conjunction with these units, but will have an additional cost and are not part of the purchase being made at this time. The monitors have the ability to identify a need for defibrillation and then will deliver a dose of electrical energy to the heart automatically. They would be compatible with the units the Mitchell County EMS will purchase. Communications Director Becky Schaefer reported that there were some problems with the 911 system last week. The new fiber optic cable installed formed a leak of water into the electrical room. The conduit that comes into the building and goes down into the basement was not sealed. Condensation build up caused the leak, Schaefer said. A foam sealant was put around it and the coupling and should keep the leak from beginning again. The underground diggers and an AT&T representative came back to seal the leak. “AT&T was very quick to come out, after we let them know they were here the next day,” said Schaefer. The Communications Director also reported there had been error messages coming through on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week. It is believed the error is not part of Mitchell county’s equipment, but that it is being pushed out of the Wichita system, said Schaefer. “We are confident that is the problem and it is being worked on in Wichita,” she said. New Rescue Squad Chairman Randy Gengler and Josh Bell explained the need for a new vehicle. The current vehicle is 30 years old and is a Chevy Big Block. Once the truck reaches over 60 miles per hour, it begins to smoke and uses oil. The Rescue Squad would like to get a 550 chassis with a crew cab and a rescue box on back, much like the current truck. Commissioner Mike Cooper said it would be best to apply for the grant and then identify the vehicle for purchase due to the time frame after grant approval. Gengler plans to apply for a grant to help with costs but wanted to obtain permission from the commissioners before writing the application to ensure the $45,330 could be disclosed as funds available for the purchase. Health Department Director Courtney Murrow requested approval from the Commissioners for renewal of the WIC contract with Ottawa County. Murrow said it was the same as the contract with Jewell County except the dietician goes to Ottawa County for one full day per month verses the half day per month the dietician works in Jewell County. The Commissioners approved the contract as written. Commissioner Mike Cooper volunteered himself as the voting delegate for Mitchell county’s Kansas County Association Multiline Pool (KCAMP). Owner of Lakeside Convenience in Glen Elder Laura Benoit, applied for a cereal malt beverage license for the convenience store. It was approved.
