The booklet pictured above is used in the ECM program “God Talk” in which
a chaplain meets with a group of children in the detention center and they
read a one page story written by someone who has been in lockup. Chaplain
Kevin Aldridge recently selected “Heritage”. The boys read these words by
the young writer, “This is my heritage. My father’s in jail, my brother’s locked
up, even my mother did time. My grandfather was killed when he was only
twenty. How do I change that?” Chaplain Kevin then began a discussion about
family heritage and learned that six of the eight boys in the group had fathers
who were deceased. This program allowed Kevin the opportunity to discuss
the emotions involved with losing a loved one, how to properly handle the
emotions, and was then able to pray with the children as a group.
Dear Friends of ECM,
We had a great year in 2011. The chaplains spent more time with
the children in detention; the fundraising events were extremely
successful; the support from donors was humbling; and ECM was
able to offer new programs that will hopefully help the children to
begin to take a more positive direction in their lives. The Rev. Pamela
Dolan recently toured the St. Louis County Detention Center and was
touched by what she observed. She has graciously written a brief
article for ECM which I believe will help you to understand why we,
through the ECM chaplains, need to be doing this work. Thank you
to everyone who supported ECM in 2011.

As a parent, I spend a lot of time imagining the
future my children might have. At times I worry about
everything from global warming to prom dates, but mostly
I am able to live in hope and gratitude. I have faith that if
they work hard and follow their passions, doors will open
for them and their lives will have a positive impact on the
world, whatever the challenges and opportunities that
await them.
While I imagine what doors will open for my children in the
future, there are children right now who are having doors
slammed shut behind them. These are children in detention. It can be frightening to have doors close in your life,
even if those doors are there to try to keep you from situations and choices that harm you.
The closed doors of detention centers serve a purpose,
but we cannot let those doors be the end of the story for
the children in our care. Episcopal City Mission believes
that, with God’s help, we can open doors even within the
confines of detention. The presence of the chaplains, and
the prayers and involvement of the rest of us, open doors
of hope, doors of healing, doors that create new pathways for the children to follow. Our faith insists, gently
but firmly, that a closed door is never the final answer in a
young life. Please support the work of Episcopal City Mission, so we can keep opening doors through our programs,
our prayers, and our presence.

Chaplains Increase Time with
Children
The chaplains are asked to record the activities they have done with the children and the
number of children that have requested time
with them. We are proud to report that in
2011, the number of interactions dramatically
increased over previous years from roughly
4,500 interactions to almost 13,000 interactions. This increase is the result of Dietra,
Jeff, and Kevin being in the centers in the afternoon, evening, and on weekends when the
children are not in school.

“In 1994, I took a pastoral care class at State
Hospital with a rabbi who said something of
monumental importance to me. He said, “It is
important to learn to practice the ministry of
presence.” This involved learning to simply be
with people where they were and not angling
to share pearls of wisdom. He said that you
have to earn the right to share what you believe with people. I see this practice lived out
in the work ECM does with our youth. When I
asked the kids about the impact on their spiritual development, every single one said they
have become closer to God. Many say they
read the Bible and pray regularly. I count it
a great privilege to work with the ECM chaplains.”

Summer Solstice is moving to Grace Episcopal Church | June 22, 2012
ECM is thrilled that Grace Episcopal Church in Kirkwood is hosting our annual familiy picnic, Summer
Solstice. It will be held on June 22nd from 5:30pm until 8:30pm. The venue may be new but we
will still offer the same great food and entertainment for the low ticket price of $15 for adults and
$5 for children 5-12 years of age. We are very thankful to the parishioners of Emmanuel for hosting
this event for many years for ECM. The Board of directors is considering a move to a new location
each year in order to introduce more people to ECM and our good work with the children in detention.
Tickets will be available in mid-April from the ECM office and Board members.
Moment in Time | September 27, 2012
Don’t miss “Moment in Time”, the ECM gala dinner event, on September 27, 2012 from 6:00pm
until 9:30pm at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Clayton. The evening begins with a cocktail reception
followed by dinner and inspirational speakers. Look for your invitation in August or check out our
