HARU MATSURI 2007
SPRING FESTIVAL
Ocha. The Essence of Green Tea
While Toronto has yet to feel the bite of winter, we know that
spring will arrive at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre
(JCCC) on March 3 and 4, 2007! We welcome everyone to a
Japanese spring weekend of activities, entertainment and
exhibits at Haru Matsuri 2007!!
This year’s theme, Ocha: The Essence of Green Tea
invites all who visit to explore the growing popularity of green
tea. In Japan, Ocha is known as a cornerstone of Japanese
health and culture. In addition to the huge health benefits,
there are spiritual benefits associated with the formal tea ceremony, Chanoyu. Chanoyu is a centuries old, highly ritualized
practice descended from Zen Buddhist monks. Visitors to
Haru Matsuri will have an opportunity to participate in a tea
ceremony as lead by a sensei from the Urasenke Tea Society.
The ceremony reflects many aspects of Japanese culture
including pottery, poetry and calligraphy; participants will
leave the ceremony with a deeper understanding of Japanese
culture and its underlying principles of harmony, respect,
purity and tranquility.
Haru Matsuri will also
include Japanese arts
and crafts demonstrations such as Ikebana
(flower
arranging),
Bunka Shishu (embroidery), Origami (paperfolding) and Sumi-e
(brush painting). The
JCCC offers classes
or workshops in all of these areas and you can sign up for our
Spring programmes.
The JCCC's martial artists will demonstrate the
techniques of "The Way of the Warrior" through Aikido, Judo,
Karate, Iaido, Naginata, and Kendo.
For entertainment, there will be odori (traditional
Japanese dancing) by JCCC traditional dance groups AyameKai and Sakura-Kai, and Taiko (Japanese drumming).
Japanese cuisine will also be available in the food court.
As always the JCCC and Kobayashi Hall will be full of
colour and elaborately decorated to welcome the spring and
the long-awaited close of the winter season. Festival guests
entering the Centre will be greeted by an elaborate display of
traditional Hina Matsuri Dolls.
Gather your family and friends and come to the JCCC,
and join us as we celebrate the arrival of Spring!

GUJO ODORI NIGHT WORKSHOP
Every summer, for the past 400 years or
so, the small town of Gujo Hachiman,
Japan puts on a summer dance festival
that attracts over 350,000 visitors. For a
small town in the middle of the mountains of Gifu Prefecture with a population
of only 16,000 people this is remarkable.
That the dance festival has never missed
a year in its long history is also remarkable. Likewise is the fact that the festival,
called Gujo Odori, is considered one of
the three most famous dance festivals in
Japan and is designated a significant intangible folk cultural asset
by the Japanese government. But what is truly remarkable is that
this festival continues to remain relevant and well attended in a
modern age where old-fashioned and traditional pastimes
increasingly compete for attention alongside modern diversions.
The fact that the festival can be enjoyed regardless of age or
skill level makes Gujo Odori one of the most accessible dance festivals in Japan. It is quite simply an event where your ability to
dance comes second to your desire to participate, where being
there is more important than how well you can dance.
While the actual year Gujo Odori was started is not precisely
known, Gujo Odori is said to have been started by Lord Endo
Yoshitaka in the Tokugawa Period over 400 years ago. This dance
festival was Lord Endo’s attempt to encourage all of the town's
KOHAKU UTA GASSEN
citizens, regardless of social level or position, to join together during the summer obon period to dance together, socialize, and forget the challenges and hardships of daily life. To create the festival known today as Gujo Odori, Lord Endo encouraged the small
villages surrounding the then newly developed Gujo Hachiman to
bring their obon songs and dances to Gujo Hachiman and create
a new dance festival. It is this original spirit of inclusion and community that over 400 years later survives as the heart and soul of
an extremely popular summer dance festival where people from all
walks of life and social position continue to come and join together to dance, to socialize, and to forget the challenges of daily life.
On Friday March 9, 2007 at 7:00 pm, the Japanese Canadian
Cultural Centre will host Gujo Odori Night. On this evening, six
dancers from Japan will perform the 10 dances of Gujo Odori, and
will also conduct a workshop session to teach participants three
dances – “Kawasaki”, “Haru Koma” and “Gen Gen Bala Bala”.
This is a rare opportunity to experience this unique dance festival
first-hand in an interactive and intimate manner, and it is also an
opportunity to meet the performers.
This special evening at the JCCC is also a preview of an event
planned for 2008 when for two nights Gujo Odori will be held at
Dundas Square in downtown Toronto. For the 2008 event, performers will include dancers and musicians from Japan. Please
call the JCCC at 416-441-2345 to register for this free workshop.
This event is open to all ages. Wear your yukata and geta if you
want! Refreshments will be served.
2007 SPRING CLASSES AT THE JCCC
Time to start thinking about signing up for one (or more!) of the
many classes offered at the JCCC! Whether it’s honing an already
acquired skill or learning a new one, the JCCC has something for
everyone. The JCCC offers classes in traditional cultural arts,
including Japanese language classes for adults as well as seven
different disciplines of martial arts. Please see the enclosed spring
class brochure or visit our website at www.jccc.on.ca for full
details and information about the many activities at the JCCC.
GALLERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
On December 9, the 2006 Toronto Kohaku Utagassen was presented to a packed house in the Kobayashi Hall. The show featured stirring performances of both traditional enka and modern
popular songs. The judges were hard-pressed to choose a winner
given all the fine performances but the Akagumi women's team
eventually took the championship. The JCCC thanks everyone for
their efforts and support.
The Asahi Exhibit at the JCCC is officially opened and we are
looking for volunteers to monitor the gallery. If you are able to
spare some time on Saturdays and/or Sundays between
11:00am to 4:00pm, from now until March 11, 2007, please
call Christine at 416-441-2345 ext 221. This is a great
opportunity for all ages, from students to seniors.

MOVIE NIGHT: WATER BOYS
PLAY BALL!
ASAHI BASEBALL EXHIBITION OPENS
Asahi stars Mike Maruno (left) and Mickey Maikawa at opening ceremonies
For a few magical hours, over seventy people in attendance
were transported back to the Powell Street Baseball Grounds
before the war. The opening of the Asahi Baseball Exhibition,
Leveling the Playing Field was honoured with the presence of
two original members of the famous team, Mickey Maikawa
and Mike Maruno. Marty Kobayashi, Pat Adachi and Frank
Moritsugu spoke of the role that these men played in combating prejudice and inequality of the time. Although small in
stature, they used a combination of brilliant strategies in
fielding, pitching and skill to defeat their opposition. In her
speech, Pat Adachi recognized the families of deceased
players in attendance and shared her anecdotes with them.
The exhibition will be at the JCCC Gallery until March 14.
Currently, the exhibition is open on the weekends only, but
special weekday viewing can be arranged by phoning the
JCCC reception at 416-441-2345.
Waterboys is a goofy, charming 2001 comedy film written and
directed by the Japanese film director Shinobu Yaguchi, about five
boys who start a synchronized swimming team at their high
school. The film was a popular success in Japan, and was nominated for eight prizes at the Japanese Academy Awards, winning
awards for, 'Best Newcomer' and 'Best Music Score'. The cast
includes Satoshi Tsumabuki, Hiroshi Tamaki, Akifumi Miura, Koen
Kondo, Takatoshi Kaneko, and Naoto Takenaka (Shall We Dance?).
A beautiful new swimming teacher starts work at a rural high
school. Dozens of boys decide to join the swimming team, but
when they realise that she teaches synchronized swimming all but
five of them drop out. The teacher soon leaves work on maternity
leave, and for some time the team is on hiatus. However, when
Suzuki watches a dolphin show he decides to ask the dolphin
trainer to be their coach. Hilarity and heart-warming drama ensue.

AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT (PART II)
Speaker: Terry Watada
A series of lectures are offered for those who have always dreamed
of visiting the ancient nation of Japan or for those who have visited this fascinating country over the years. The presentation will be
a casual and free-flowing look at both contemporary and historical
Japan by speakers who come from all walks of life, both Japanese
and non-Japanese; also important travel tips including such things
as train schedules, where and what to eat, sites, shopping, antique
shops and many, many more. The speaker for Part II is the well
known writer, Terry Watada. Terry will be speaking to us about the
difference in his impressions of Japan between his trip in 1959 and
his most recent trip in 2006. While concentrating on Hokkaido, he
will also give us his impressions of Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto.

whether I could do it justice or not. The first
day I stood in front of my charges, I was
awed. I felt like a mother hen who has

remember one boy named Edgar who had
brothers who would pick him up after
school. They would always ask if their

wish all parents were that way!”

HARU NO UTAMATSURI RENAISSANCE
By popular request, the Haru No Uta Matsuri (Spring Songfest) will
return to the JCCC and this time welcome the spring of 2007. In
this dead of winter, it’s too early to give details in full, but the
committee promises an evening of enjoyment full of popular enka
songs, nostalgic natsumelo songs and a hilarious skit or two.
Haru No Uta Matsuri will be held at the JCCC Kobayashi Hall,
Saturday March 17, 2007, from 6:30pm. Admission will be $15
and all tickets are reserved seating.

KENJUTSU DEMONSTRATION
At the JCCC’s Haru Matsuri festival, the Tokumeikan group will
once again be putting on a
demonstration of one of the great
styles of kenjutsu (classical
Japanese swordsmanship): Katori
Shinto Ryu. Katori Shinto Ryu
(“the sword style of the God of Katori”) was created circa 1450
A.D. during Japan's Warring States Period (Sengoku Jidai) to
prepare samurai for fighting on the battlefield.
The demonstration in Katori Shinto Ryu will showcase a
selection of kata from its curriculum, which will include sword vs.
sword and sword vs. naginata, among others. More information
about the specific demonstration date and time can be found at
the group’s websites:
www.tokumeikan.com and http://tokumeikan-toronto.blogspot.com/
Late in 2006 the JCCC hosted evenings featuring two leading
members of the Nikkei community: world renown architect
Raymond Moriyama and Olympic medalist Vicky Sunohara.
Both events brought out big and enthusiastic crowds.

44th Annual Ikenobo Ikebana Floral Show - “Utsuku Shiki To Wa”
submitted by Ikenobo Ikebana Society of Toronto
As spring returns so
does our annual
Japanese floral tradition. 2007 marks the
Ikenobo
Ikebana
Society of Toronto’s
44th Annual Floral
Show,
entitled,
“Utsuku shiki to wa”
(loosely translated,
“as for beauty”), to be
Mrs Kadoguchi with Professor Shinichi Shimizu
held on Sunday
March 25, 2007 at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre
(JCCC). Last year, as many as 300 guests flocked to admire the
over 50 floral works, enhanced by live demonstrations by
Professor Shinichi Shimizu direct from Ikenobo Headquarters of
Kyoto, Japan.
Ikenobo embodies the “Spirit of Harmony” – a mystical place
where floral material and surroundings converge with the soul of
the arranger and viewer. As Ikenobo students and teachers, we
have embarked on a continuous journey of learning and experiencing. Each floral show presents members of our Ikenobo
Ikebana Society with a new opportunity to express our innermost
thoughts and desires.
For the occasion of our 44th Floral Show, Ikenobo
Headquarters will be honouring us with the expertise of Professor
Mitsuko Kato to conduct the demonstrations. Professor Kato has
distinguished herself in the area of Free Style and Meiji Rikka (two
styles of Ikenobo) for which she was bestowed the coveted
“Tachibana Sho” by the Headmaster. This promises to be an
unique opportunity for all our students of Ikenobo to benefit from
Professor Kato’s workshop which will be on Friday, March 23,
2007. Ikenobo students – please contact your teacher now for
more details and to sign up for the workshop.
We encourage everyone to tell friends about this show. Our
tearoom will once again serve delightful snacks. New & “new to
you” vases will be on sale. Quantities are limited so come early for
the best selection. Admission is $5 and the doors will open from
1-5pm. For more information, call 416-229-9950 or 905-839-0535.

Kokoro: The Heart Within – Bushido: Way of the Warrior
Bushido is the name given to the strict code of honour and duty
that was developed between the samurai and their lords. This
code has also been said to sum up the moral and religious
qualities of the Japanese, manifest in the nation’s modern
national ethic and moral values. Much of Japan’s group heritage
is due to their orientation around the qualities of bushido and
Japan’s early farming based culture.

RINGING IN 2007 WITH DANCING, WORLD CLASS CUISINE AND JAZZ
December 31 saw the return of
glitz and glamour in the
Kobayashi Hall, for the annual
New Year’s Eve Dinner and
Dance. Over 200 revelers started
the evening with a delicious buffet by Calvert’s Catering that featured prime rib roast. This was
followed by dazzling displays of
ballroom dancing to the musical
accompaniment of disc jockeys,

gant dancers floated around the
room amid the sparkling lights of a mystical winter wonderland.
Midnight brought the arrival of 2007 to the sounds Auld Lang
Syne and the sights of multi-coloured balloons cascading down
from the ceiling.
The next afternoon Kobayashi Hall was again the place to
be for the annual Shin-nen Kai New Year’s Day Banquet. The
over 200 attendees celebrated the start of a new year with an
incredible evening of fine dining and entertainment. Kunio Ishii
of Toriichi Catering outdid himself in preparing the star of the
show. The buffet was an incredible array of traditional o-sechi
ryori (new year’s dishes) and Canadian delicacies. In addition to
performing his duties as emcee, Tak Yoshida also performed a
couple of songs. The night was capped with a performance by
renowned jazz pianist, Gene Di Novi.
The JCCC thanks the organizing committees for all their
great work in making each year’s celebrations better. Mark your
calendars now, so that you can be a part of next year’s
celebrations too.

February 2007
Start off the New Year...
with a Gift
2007 has started off splendidly for the Japanese Canadian Cultural
Centre in light of the current and very successful showcase of
the Asahi Baseball Team Exhibition. Like many of the previous
events held at the cultural centre, most notably the Road to Asia,
guests were delighted with an evening full of culture and flare.
Attendees were entertained with a historical account of the Asahi
team, the opportunity to meet two of the original Asahi team
members and a tour of the gallery. All this would not have been
made possible without the planned giving contributed by donors
to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.
Giving monetary gifts in support of a foundation or an organization
can commonly be mistaken as a financial burden. But what is
often overlooked is the strategy of planned giving. Not only does
this approach maximize one’s contribution, but it also maximizes
the benefits to one’s family and their supported charity.
Planned giving constitutes a calculated method of making
charitable gifts of estate assets and/or monetary gifts in support of
a charity organization that lies within a donor’s faculty. Provided
as such, gift planning empowers the donor to actively play a role in
making decisions on what percentage of their income they wish to
donate and the form in which they wish to make their contribution
in: will bequests, life insurance, annual planned funding, real
estate, or publicly traded stocks and mutual funds.
An online software known to have aided in facilitation of planned
giving is the Giftabulator. Its versatility in establishing strategic
methods of giving – through the calculations of one’s income, assets,
tax rates and interest rates – makes it unique in the market and very
popular among financial service institutions, estate planners, and
non-for-profit organizations. Visit www.Giftabulator-Beta.com and
give the software a try as an individual and see what it can do for
you and what legacy you can leave with the Japanese Canadian
Cultural Centre.
