Dr. Bernie Mullin is considered to be a leading
expert in sport marketing
and sport management with
28-plus years of experience
in the sport and entertainment industry. He is a
noted builder of outstanding start-up professional sports
franchises and is equally adept at turning around and
building back up existing franchises that previously suffered from declining fan support, which he has accomplished in various markets throughout the United States.
Since 1986, Mullin has held executive positions with
professional sports teams in Major League Baseball
(MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), the
National Hockey League (NHL), and the International
Hockey League (IHL) as well as NCAA Division 1
Athletics. Mullin came to Atlanta in April 2004 as Atlanta
Spirit, LLC’s President and Chief Executive Officer, where
he was charged with structuring the parent company for
the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers and the
world-class Philips Arena.
In this role, Mullin is in charge of all facets of the
Spirit's operations, including all team and business functions for the Hawks and Thrashers, and overseeing the
management of Philips Arena. Under his leadership,
Atlanta Spirit has significantly improved the economic stability and performance of both team brands. Attendance at
Hawks and Thrashers games is steadily rising and the inarena entertainment experience for fans at Philips Arena
has been significantly upgraded, while maintaining the
superb customer service and southern hospitality that the
arena is famous for.
Prior to his arrival in Atlanta, Mullin served as the
NBA's Senior Vice President, Marketing and Team
Business Operations for four years. There, his responsibilities included managing and marketing the NBA, WNBA
and NBDL brands. He also directed the Team Marketing
and Business Operations group that provide management
consulting services and strategic information to teams on
all business and revenue generating initiatives, most
specifically ticket sales, sponsorship sales, marketing,
advertising, branding and promotional strategies.
Mullin began his professional sports team career in
1986, serving as Senior Vice President of Business for the
Pittsburgh Pirates, where he quickly helped turn around a
team that was losing multi-millions of dollars annually by
taking the team's attendance and business revenues to
all-time franchise record levels. In 1991, Mullin joined the
expansion Colorado Rockies as Senior Vice President of
Business Operations where he oversaw all business functions and developed the team's business and marketing
plans, recruited and trained the business staff and directed the execution of the programs that produced MLB’s alltime attendance record of just below 4.5 million fans in one
season, a record that still stands today. Mullin also acted
as the owner's representative on the design and construction of the award-winning Coors Field. At the end of 1993,
Mullin became President and General Manager of the
expansion Denver Grizzlies of the International Hockey
League. There, he oversaw all business and team operations, won a Turner Cup Championship and created a
model for successful expansion in the IHL with an average
attendance of more than 14,000 fans per game and a 7220-6 win/loss record.
Prior to and intertwined with his tenure in professional
sports, Mullin spent more than a dozen years in intercollegiate athletics and higher education. He served as the
Vice Chancellor of Athletics for the University of Denver in
the mid-to-late 90's, where he directed the institution’s
move to NCAA Division I status and nearly $300 million in
athletic and recreational facility construction. Mullin was a
Professor of Sport Management at the University of
Massachusetts from 1977-86, where he helped build the
academic program to international prominence and he
also operated a thriving sport marketing and facility management consultancy business. Additionally, he published
the best-selling text, Sport Marketing, which is now in its
third edition.
The Liverpool, England native played semi-professional football (soccer) for the Oxford City Football Club from
1969-73, and captained his varsity team to back-to-back
British Polytechnic Championship finals in 1972 and 1973.
Mullin earned a Ph.D. in Business, an MBA and an MS in
Marketing from the University of Kansas, where he was
elected to membership in Beta Gamma Sigma, the national honor society in business. He also graduated from
Coventry University in England with a BA in Business
Studies.
Mullin is active in the Atlanta community, serving on
the boards of Central Atlanta Progress, the Atlanta Sports
Council, and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. He
resides with his wife, Valerie, in Chastain Park and has
three children, Julie, Lara and Steven, a stepson Chad,

THRASHERS MANAGEMENT
DON WADDELL
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER
The commitment by
Executive Vice President
and General Manager Don
Waddell to build a contending team in Atlanta
was highlighted by the
Thrashers success during
the 2005-06 season, in which the team posted a franchise-best 41-33-8 record for 90 points. During
Waddell’s eight years at the helm of the Thrashers, he
has infused the club with proven veteran support for a
young and offensively explosive line-up, which he continued this off-season.
Waddell has constructed the Thrashers to achieve
perennial success by establishing the foundation for
long-term prosperity through successful drafting,
shrewd trades and key free agent signings. His transactions have loaded the Thrashers with emerging stars
at each position and anchored the roster with two of the
NHL's top superstars, Marian Hossa and Ilya
Kovalchuk. He has laid the groundwork for long-term
success in Atlanta by adding solid veterans, including
off-season acquisitions Johan Hedberg, Niko Kapanen,
Steve Rucchin, Jon Sim and Vitaly Vishnevski.
Waddell has become one of the most respected
general managers in the NHL and serves on the
league's nine-member competition committee, which
acted as the primary body used to discuss and determine the successful rules changes that were enacted
before last season. His vast accomplishments in more

Entry Draft in Vancouver.
12
than 26 years in professional hockey as a player, coach
and general manager were recently acknowledged by
his 30th ranking in The Hockey News' sixth annual edition (Jan. 2006) of hockey's “Top 100 People of Power
and Influence.”
Prior to the start of the 2003-04 season, the team
lost one of its players, Dan Snyder, as a result of injuries
sustained in a car accident. Waddell served as a key figure in leading the entire organization through the
tragedy. Despite facing tremendous adversity and
mounting injuries, the team narrowly missed the playoffs, and set franchise records for wins (33) and points
(78), which have since been eclipsed.
The team's first step toward achieving this success
and recognition came during the 2002-03 season when
it made a very dramatic second-half turnaround, which
was keyed by Waddell's decision to hire proven Stanley
Cup-winner Bob Hartley. Prior to hiring Hartley, Waddell
made his own successful NHL coaching debut with a
win at Carolina on Dec. 27 (he served as interim head
coach until Jan. 13). The team, which was in a 1-9-0-0
tailspin, responded with Waddell behind the bench by
defeating three teams (Carolina, Pittsburgh and
Philadelphia) for the first time in franchise history and
capturing an improved 4-5-1 record in 10 games. The
move changed the team's momentum and helped
inspire a surge that yielded a 23-19-6-1 record over the
final 49 games, just nine points shy of a playoff spot.
Waddell continues to build the core of the franchise
through the NHL Entry Draft and by stockpiling impressive prospects. He made Kovalchuk the first Russian
player selected first overall in the history of the Entry
Draft in 2001. In the 2002 Entry Draft, Waddell made
Kari Lehtonen the highest-selected European goaltender in NHL draft history. The bright future for
prospects within the organization was never more evident than in the culmination of the Chicago Wolves
2002 Calder Cup Championship and the Orlando Solar
Bears 2001 Turner Cup Championship.
Waddell has a long-standing relationship with USA
Hockey as a player and in management, most recently
serving as general manager of the 2006 U.S. Olympic
Men's Ice Hockey Team. He worked as general manager for the U.S. squad at the 2005 World Championships,
and as assistant general manager for the 2004 World

Championship and World Cup squads. He also has
served as the U.S. Men's National team's GM for the
2001 and 2002 World Championships, helping guide
the 2001 team to a fourth-place finish, its best since
capturing bronze in 1996. Waddell first emerged as an
executive on the international hockey scene in 2000,
when he served as assistant general manager following
the 1999-2000 NHL season.
Waddell came to Atlanta in June 1998 after building
two professional hockey franchises (the San Diego
Gulls and Orlando Solar Bears of the now defunct
International Hockey League) and serving as assistant
general manager for the 1997-98 Stanley CupChampion Detroit Red Wings. Waddell was vice president of RDV Sports from 1995-97, where he served on
the organization's executive committee, which oversaw
operations of the National Basketball Association's
Orlando Magic, the IHL's Orlando Solar Bears, Magic
Fanattics (retail) and Magic Carpet Aviation.
While at RDV Sports, Waddell was vice president
and general manager of the Orlando Solar Bears from
1995-97. Prior to the Solar Bears, he held the same role
at the IHL's San Diego Gulls from 1990-95. He also
served as the club's head coach for the 1991-92 season, taking the team to the franchise's first playoff berth.
He spent two seasons with the IHL's Flint Spirits, for
which he served as head coach/general manager from
1988-89 and general manager from 1989-90. Waddell
was twice named IHL Executive of the Year (1992-93
and 1995-96).
Waddell's playing experience includes being player/
coach for the Flint Spirits from 1986-88 and the
Goaldiggers Hockey Club in Toledo, Ohio, for the 198586 season. He was drafted by the NHL's Los Angeles
Kings in 1978 and spent three years with the organization from 1980-83. He played more than nine seasons
of professional hockey, finishing with 372 points (95
goals, 277 assists) in 404 games, mostly in the IHL. His
best season came in 1981-82, when he finished with 95
points (26 goals, 69 assists) for Saginaw and earned
the Governor's Trophy as the IHL's top defenseman. In
1982 and 1986, Waddell was named a First Team IHL
All-Star. He was also named a Second Team IHL AllStar in 1988.
During a successful amateur career, Waddell helped
the U.S. National Team win the gold medal at the 1983
World Championships. Waddell played Division I hockey at Northern Michigan University from 1976-80, where
he majored in business management. He was inducted
into the Northern Michigan University Sports Hall of
Fame in 1992 and was named to the 1970s CCHA AllDecade Team. He finished with 172 points (52 goals,
120 assists) in 120 career games at Northern Michigan
from 1976-80.
He and his wife, Cheryl, have a daughter, Chelsea,
and reside in Duluth.

Bob Hartley, the second
head coach in franchise history, used his experience as
a Stanley Cup champion to
guide the Thrashers to the
most successful and exciting season in the franchise’s six-year history in 2005-06. He led the club to its
first winning record (41-33-8), while setting franchise
coaching records for wins, points (90) and winning percentage (.548), and guided the team to an 18-8-2 record
over the last 28 games of the season
Hartley now holds a 93-89-21 record since joining the
Thrashers on Jan. 14, 2003. In more than two-and-half
seasons with Atlanta, he already owns Thrashers career
coaching records for wins and winning percentage (.510).
He has earned a 287-207-69 record over seven seasons as
a head coach in the NHL with Atlanta and Colorado and
ranks 11th among active coaches in wins. Hartley coached
in his 500th NHL game at Toronto on Nov. 19, 2005.
In 2003-04, Hartley helped the team overcome the
tragic loss of Dan Snyder to set club records with a 33-378-4 mark and a franchise-high 78 points, which were
eclipsed in 2005-06. He coached his 400th game in a 4-3
win at Washington on Oct. 11, 2003 and was named "2004
Coach of the Year" by Hockey Digest. In addition, he was
ranked 86th by The Hockey News in the fifth annual edition of hockey's "Top 100 People of Power and Influence."
Prior to joining the Thrashers, Hartley served as Head
Coach of the Colorado Avalanche for more than four seasons from 1998-2002 and guided the team to the 2001
Stanley Cup Championship, becoming one of only four
head coaches to win the Stanley Cup and Calder Cup
(AHL). In four playoff seasons, he lead the Avalanche to
four consecutive Northwest Division titles and four straight
trips to the Western Conference Finals from 1999-2002,
compiling a 49-31 record and a .613 winning percentage.
In the 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Hartley became the first
NHL coach since 1967 (Billy Reay) to lead his team to the
Conference Finals in his first four seasons with the same
team. In 16 seasons as a head coach at the amateur and
professional levels, Hartley's teams have qualified for the
playoffs 14 times while capturing five league championships and have been a part of winning at least 40 games
eight times and 30 or more contests on 14 occasions.
Hartley became the second head coach of the
Avalanche and the 11th in franchise history when he was
named to the position on June 30, 1998, serving until Dec.
18, 2002. His Avalanche teams won at least 42 games in
four consecutive seasons from 1998-2002, including a 4529-8 mark in 2001-02. The Hawkesbury, Ontario, native
16
posted a 193-118-48 record in 359 regular-season games,
for a .605 winning percentage, and is Colorado's all-time
coaching victory leader.
Hartley guided the 2000-01 Avalanche to its most successful season in franchise history. Colorado established
team records for points (118), wins (52), home wins (28),
goals against (192), and tied the franchise road win mark
with 24. The Avalanche began the season unbeaten in its
first 11 games, the best start to a season in franchise history. Colorado carried that momentum through the rest of
the season, reaching the 40-point (seventh-fastest in NHL
history), 40-win and 100-point (sixth fastest in the NHL
since 1980-81) marks in team-record pace. His memorable season behind the Colorado bench included acting
as assistant coach for the North American squad at the
2001 NHL All-Star Game in Denver.
Hartley's second season behind the Avalanche bench
in 1999-2000 culminated in the club's sixth-consecutive
division title. In the playoffs, the Avalanche advanced past
the Phoenix Coyotes, four-games-to-one, and the Detroit
Red Wings, four-games-to-one, reaching the Western
Conference Finals for the second year in a row and fourth
time in five years while coming within one game of reaching the Stanley Cup Finals.
During his inaugural season with Colorado in 1998-99,
the Avalanche finished with a record of 44-28-10 and
earned their fifth-consecutive division title. The club
established franchise records for the longest winning
streak (12), longest road winning streak (seven), longest
unbeaten streak (12) and longest road unbeaten streak
(10). It marked the first time a club had started the season
winless in its first five games to emerge in the NHL's top
five clubs since the Washington Capitals in 1983-84 and
the Chicago Blackhawks in 1969-70.
Prior to joining Colorado, Hartley coached four seasons in the American Hockey League from 1994-98, posting a 151-136-33 regular-season record and a 29-23 postseason mark in four consecutive trips to the playoffs with
Hershey (1996-98) and Cornwall (1994-96). He guided
Hershey to the 1997 Calder Cup Championship and led
the team to a 43-27-10 regular-season record. Hartley
joined former Hershey coaches Bryan Murray and John
Paddock as the only coaches to lead the Bears to 100 or
more points in one season. Staving off elimination five
times and becoming only the ninth team in AHL playoff history to rally from a three-games-to-one deficit to win a
series, the Bears went on to defeat the Hamilton Bulldogs
four-games-to-one in the finals and win the Calder Cup
Championship.
After serving as an assistant coach for Cornwall in
1993-94, Hartley guided the Aces to the Southern Division

hosted clinics for ice and in-line coaches, and participated
in USA Hockey's 2005 National Hockey Coaches

again in 1995-96. The Aces upset the Regular Season
Champion Albany River Rats in the first round of the 1996
playoffs. Albany finished the regular season 35 points
ahead of Cornwall.
Hartley led Laval to the Quebec Major Junior League
Championship and the Memorial Cup in 1993 and compiled an 81-52-7 record in two seasons with Laval from
1991-93.
From 1987-1991, Hartley served as head coach for
Hawkesbury of the Central Junior Hockey League. After
enduring an 18 point season his rookie term behind the
Hawks' bench, Hartley went on to lead his team to an
impressive 117-45-5 mark over the next three seasons,
including CJHL championships in 1990 and 1991. His
teams dropped just three post-season games from 1990-91,
going 24-3 in that span. Overall, his teams in Hawkesbury
advanced to the playoffs four consecutive seasons and
finished 31-13 in the postseason during that span.
Throughout his coaching career, Hartley has shared a
strong sense of dedication with his community. He was
honored in his hometown of Hawkesbury, where the local
ice arena was renamed Complex Bob Hartley in August
