JULY 2016
NEWSLETTER OF THE CAMERA CLUB OF BREVARD
the f-Stop
MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
The heat of summer is upon us but the CCB has planned some very cool events in the coming months.
Details on field trips, workshops, photo ops, and competitions are now readily available on our newly
designed website.
Also available online are the new hi-tech polo shirts with an embroidered CCB logo. Details can be
found in this newsletter and in our weekly informational email.
From the comments I have heard, our new system for displaying winning photographs at our monthly
meetings is a smashing success. A special thanks to Richard Thomson for making this happen.
The biggest news is that we have eliminated the 2 week timeline for taking photos for our inaugural
Capturing Brevard photo project. You may begin shooting subjects from now until the August 31
deadline. Details forthcoming. I am hoping this becomes an annual event so start capturing our county
now!
See you at the meeting!

RICHARD THOMPSON
It was a perfect late afternoon and evening at Lake Eola Park located in downtown Orlando for
photographing the scenic lake and it's surrounding tree lined shore. Before the photography began, many
club members met at Anthony's Thorton Park Pizzeria for a nice dinner and engage in casual conversation
about photography. The spaghetti and pizza were excellent, and it energized everyone for the early
nighttime outing. The weather was perfect with comfortable temperatures and broken cloudy skies. Large
numbers of visitors were strolling around the lake, and most seemed to be taking photos with their
smartphones. Members stayed well after dark to photograph the fountain, downtown skyline, and their
colorful reflections in the lake. Everyone had a great time; and, it's always nice get to know your fellow
CCB members a little bit better.

PHOTOGRAPHING FIREWORKS
By Chuck Palmer
What’s your favorite pastime on the 4th of July? Hamburgers on the grill? Going to the beach with the family?
Whatever your traditions are, I suspect most of us can’t wait to go watch the inspiring fireworks display. Of all the
photo opportunities on July 4th, capturing those remarkable fireworks is probably the most challenging for
photographers. Let’s look at a few tips for photographing fireworks.
SETTING UP FOR THE SHOW
Arrive early to make sure you have a great vantage point. You don’t need to be close to the fireworks launch
position but make sure you have a clear unobstructed view of open sky. Being downwind from the fireworks
launch point is usually not a pleasant experience. Smoke and ash from the show is not very healthy for you or your
camera, so pay attention to wind direction. Bring a lawn chair, mosquito repellent, and don’t forget water and
refreshments!
NECESSARY CAMERA EQUIPMENT
Be sure to bring your camera, wide-angle, and telephoto lenses, a cable or wireless remote release, your tripod,
and a small flashlight. And of course memory cards and fully charged batteries. Although a flash unit is not
necessary, it might come in handy when capturing the family enjoying the show. You might also consider
bringing a baseball cap to help with longer exposures (see Techniques below).
CAMERA SETTINGS
Exposure Mode – Manual. You will need to be in full control of shutter speed, and aperture.
ISO – Set your ISO setting to the lowest possible. Typically ISO 100
Lens Aperture – There is no absolutely “correct” aperture for shooting fireworks. In general with the longer
shutter speeds involved, you will need to stop the lens down to smaller apertures. Typically f/11 to f/22
depending a large degree to how close you are to the fireworks, and how much of the frame is filled with
fireworks bursts. Tip: Start at f/16 for your first test shot, and don’t pay any attention to your camera
metering.
PHOTOGRAPHING FIREWORKS contd.
CAMERA SETTINGS
Shutter Speed – Normally you will use long exposures at slow shutter speeds. Experiment with different
shutter speeds from 2 to 30 seconds. You will likely find that 6-15 seconds will be ideal for capturing
multiple bursts. Although you can set specific long exposure shutter times, it will probably be easier to set
your camera to Bulb shutter mode, and use your remote release to first open the shutter, then close the
shutter after the final burst. (See Techniques below)
Focus Mode – Manual Focus. Try focusing your camera on a far-away object, or set your focus to infinity, but
be sure your camera is set to manual focus mode.
White Balance – If you shoot in raw format, you can easily modify White Balance settings in post-processing
software. Many photographers will suggest you use a Daylight setting for fireworks. However, I find a
Tungsten White Balance setting typically provides more vivid colors.
Shooting/Drive Mode – Set to Cable Release or Wireless Remote Release mode to prevent camera shake. If
you don’t have a remote release, you can use your self-timer set to 2 seconds, but timing your shot is much
more challenging.
Lens Image Stabilization – Turn this feature off while photographing from a tripod.
TECHNIQUES
With your camera on your tripod, set up as described above, and in Bulb Shutter mode, watch for a fireworks shell
to be launched. Press your remote release immediately upon launch to open the shutter, and keep it open as the
burst lights up the sky. Wait a few moments after the initial burst to record streaks and any other smaller bursts to
occur. Then close your shutter using your remote release. Count to yourself to estimate how long your shutter is
open. Experiment with longer exposures to capture multiple launches of fireworks shells and bursts. You will
notice that multiple bursts build up and can easily run into over-exposure. Sometimes you might find there is
considerable time between shell launches. In this case, you can leave your shutter open for longer periods in Bulb
mode to capture multiple bursts by covering your lens with an opaque baseball cap during the wait time.
COMPOSING YOUR FIREWORKS PHOTOS
Remarkable images really start with a great composition. Of course capturing fireworks is no different. But it is a
real challenge since you can’t see your final subject until the fireworks shell explodes! Some of the more
compelling fireworks images provide a wider angle view with the city skyline, or foreground reflection of the
light. Consider horizontal and vertically composed images. Include family members in silhouette watching the
display. Use your camera’s live view to watch a series of bursts to optimize composition before you begin taking
photos. The most important thing is to mix things up as you shoot the entire show. Change camera settings, alter
the number of bursts in a single frame, vary your zoom settings capturing just the bursts, and then wider angles to
include foreground details. The more variety you include in your photos the better the chances you come home
with some very remarkable images.
See you at the fireworks display and may the remarkable fireworks photos be yours.
Send in a few of your fireworks photographs.

Adobe Lightroom Tips and Tricks
INTERPRETING LIGHTROOM’S HISTOGRAM PANEL
By Chuck Palmer
Note to Photoshop users. . . Adobe Camera Raw has the same tools and functions as Adobe Lightroom. You
can use these tips and tricks in Camera Raw too!
Like your camera, Lightroom displays a Histogram of the image you have opened in the Develop Module. You
will see a colorful curve and sometimes little triangles all lit up in corners of the Histogram. What do all these
colors and those two little triangles mean? Let’s take a closer look.
Before we dive into Lightroom’s Histogram Panel, let’s first define what a histogram does for us. A histogram
is a way of visually representing the image tone data within a photograph. It is a graph of the pixels within your
image based on brightness. In darker pictures the curve data (pixels) are crowded on the left-hand side, with
brighter pictures the data is crowded on the right. We soon learn that a good exposure typically has no
brightness data that touches either of the outside boundaries of the graph on the right or left side (See
Histogram 1 below). Most photographers know that by taking a look at your camera’s histogram, you can
judge whether there will be any “clipped” pixels in the highlights or shadows. If there is, we must adjust our
shutter speed or aperture accordingly and retake the shot to avoid losing details in the shadows or highlights.
Lightroom’s Histogram is no different than your camera’s. However, Lightroom probably displays the pixel
data a little differently. One very notable difference is that Lightoom displays the Histogram data for your
cropped image you display in the Develop Module, not the full size image. Another difference is that you will
likely not see all the color channel references displayed on one chart in your camera. Let’s take a closer look at
what all these colors mean.
Adobe Lightroom Tips and Tricks
INTERPRETING LIGHTROOM’S HISTOGRAM PANEL contd.
What do the colors mean?
Lightroom’s Histogram is made up of three layers of colors that represent Red, Green, and Blue channels in
your image. Combinations of Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) pixels form all colors in a digital image being
displayed on your monitor. Where you see only Red, Green, or Blue colors, these pixels are only made up of
that particular channel. Gray is displayed when all three channels overlap. Additionally, Yellow, Magenta, and
Cyan appear when two of the RGB channels overlap. Yellow equals Red + Green channels overlap. Magenta
equals Red + Blue channels overlap. And Cyan equals Green + Blue channels overlap. Look at Histogram 1
below. See the Yellow area in the brighter area of the curve on the right? We know that this area is made up of
Red and Green Channels. Remember your first grade color wheel? Red and Green make Yellow, right?

Preview Highlight and Shadow Clipping
Those little triangles in the corners of the Histogram Panel allow you to preview clipping in your photo as you
make changes in the Develop Module. Clipped pixel areas are either completely white (on the right of the curve) or
completely black (on the left of the curve). See Histogram 2 below. Note that triangle turned green indicating the
Green channel is clipped to black. Likewise, we can see in Histogram 3 below that all three channels are clipped
white since the Clipping Indicator
has turned gray. You can easily use the clipping indicators to make your
tonal adjustments in the Develop module to recover some detail in your photo. To view areas of your photo where
all three RGB channels are clipped, move your mouse over one of the clipping indicators. Clipped black areas are
highlighted in blue and clipped white areas become red.
