THE NILES ROTARY PINION - Niles Rotary Club of Fremont
THE NILES ROTARY PINION January 2015 The View From the Podium – article is to explain a little of the process to those of you who are not recent Past Presidents or who unfamiliar with the Grant process. When the Club’s President Elect is attending PETS in March, he or she is given the total amount of DDF (District Designated Funds) that his or her club will be eligible to receive for the upcoming year. You have probably heard these funds and the term DDF spoken from the podium by me and by Past Presidents. The DDF funds to be received by each club are a direct percentage of the total amount of monies that have been donated by club members to the Rotary International Foundation. So, when you donate your double sustainer for the year or any other donation to Rotary International, unless specifically designated for the Polio Plus or End Polio Now campaign, a portion of those monies comes back to the club in the form of DDF. Rotary International calculates the total DDF that each District will be eligible for, and in turn the District calculates how much DDF each club in then is eligible for. Believe it or not but my year as Niles Rotary President is half over. It seems like just yesterday I was attending PETS (President Elect Training Seminar). The last couple of months have been a little challenging for me getting our DDF Grants into the District for approval. My goal in this At PETS, last March, I was informed that our Club’s DDF monies we are eligible for during the 2014-2015 year is $8,270. This is really a good amount of funds due to the wonderful generosity of Niles Rotarians each year donating to Rotary International. The way that a club obtains these funds is in the form of Grants. There are 2 types of Grants that can be requested of the District. These types are District Grants and Global Grants. Box 7104, Fremont, CA 94537-7104 – www.nilesrotary.org. 1 The View From the Podium (continued) District Grant requests go directly to the District and are fairly easy to obtain as long as the guidelines are followed as to providing information on what the project is to be, how it is performed, who benefits from the project, and how you intend to promote Rotary with this project. Also, required documentation must be provided to close out the Grant request before any future Grant monies can be awarded. Global Grant requests are forwarded on to Rotary International for approval; in these Global Grant requests, dollars can be matched by Rotary International. The minimum amount of DDF required to reach dollar matching by Rotary International is $15,000. DDF funds for a specific Global Grant can be rolled over to a second year to help reach the requirement of 15K to allow it to be matched. The Global Grant Process is more challenging, but the reward can be greater through this matching opportunity. As I said earlier, our DDF Funds for this year is $8,270. I decided way back in March that we would divide this up to be 3 different District Grant requests. $3,000 will be used for ongoing or new projects in Guatemala under International Chair Manuel Franco’s leadership. This year Manuel intends to build 2 new restroom cores at the Las Margaritas School where we just completed last year’s project of the Multi-use structure. Again, we will be teaming up with the Vista Hermosa Rotary Club, who will be our partner on the ground in Guatemala. These 2 new bathrooms will greatly improve the sanitary conditions at our adopted school. A second grant request of $2,000 of DDF has been submitted for phase 2 of our ongoing project at Blacow Elementary School, our adopted Title One school here in Fremont. This year we will complete the replacement of benches, and we will replace basketball backboards and hoops on their playground. This will be another “hands on” project by Niles Rotarians and will be lead by Community Service Chair, Terri Landon. The 3rd District Grant request is for $2,000 or $500 each for our 3 Interact Clubs and our Rotaract Club to do a Community Service Project of their own choosing. The projects will be organized and manned by the Interactors and Rotaractors themselves with help from Niles Rotarians. These projects selected include going back to Graham School in Newark to do work on their playground, and Washington High School Interact has planned an Easter Egg Hunt at the California School for the Deaf for children with special needs. I designated $1,270 of Grant monies to go to what will be an Area 3 joint Global Grant request. This project has not yet been identified but the Area 3 Presidents along with their International Service Chairs, spearheaded by the Fun Club’s Past President, Helen Kennedy, will have this future project selected by March. Each of the Area 3 Clubs will assign a portion of their DDF funds for this project. The good news is that the Grant Requests are submitted and we await approval. I hope that you all feel, as I do, that when we donate to Rotary International we are not only helping Rotary do good all around the world but that we are also helping Rotary do good right here in our own backyard. It is so amazing to be able to do this for families that have homes. We have one family of 4 - a mom, dad, daughter and son. They are able to afford an apartment. The mom does all the cooking on (are you ready) 2 frying pans that, well let’s just say, have seen BETTER days. That's it, so whatever she cooks for the family has to be able to be done in a frying pan. We are able to give her a full set of Calphalon pots and pans and a vacuum cleaner. They also noted to Judy Zlatnik (our Niles Rotary Pizza with Santa shopper) that they were very cold so we are sending the family several down comforters along with special things (toys and cloths) the kids wanted.” The day includes crafts to make photo frames for their family photo (taken by John & Joan Kimber of the family with Santa and their gifts), a bounce house, horse and pony rides, a visit with Santa, and pizza.
