Saitama City -a City Adjacent To The Capital Of Japan, Tokyo
日本疫学会 Japan Epidemiological Association Saitama city - a city adjacent to the capital of Japan, Tokyo Located in the temperate zone, Saitama is blessed with a mild climate and moderate temperatures throughout the year. Certainly one of the best seasons in Saitama is the beginning of the summer when people can enjoy beautiful green leaves and a variety of flowers. Though you may not realize it, there are actually many tourism resources in the city. In spite of its location close to the urbanized giant city of Tokyo, we are able to let you know of places of natural scenic beauty that will undoubtedly please you when you visit. There are good reasons we invite you to Saitama city for the congress and we plan to minimize the burdens participants may have to bear. These plans include; ・Convenient access to and from the airport and other cities ・WellWell-equipped inexpensive congress venue ・ Support provided by national, prefectural and municipal governments ・Beautiful and comfortable weather generally in the month of May and June when the congress is planned to be held With above conditions, it is promising that the IEA World Congress of Epidemiology in 2017 will be held with great success. 2 Greetings from Chairman of Promotion Committee Dear Members of the IEA, On behalf of the Promotion Committee of Japan, I am pleased to formally announce our bid to host the World Congress of Epidemiology (WCE) of IEA, planned for the year 2017, as a Council Member of the Japan Epidemiological Association. We propose to hold the Congress in Saitama Japan, conveniently accessible by air from most major cities and regions of the world. As you know, we had the privilege of hosting the 14th WCE-IEA, held in Nagoya in 1996, of which chairman was Dr. Kunio Aoki. Since then, Japan has continued to pursue excellence in both the basic and applied scientific arenas of epidemiology and, I believe, has made major contributions to the advancement of knowledge and practice in disease control and prevention. We hope to utilize these strengths in hosting the WCE, with our major goal being the promotion of exchange and distribution of knowledge among our colleagues in epidemiological fields throughout the world. The city of Saitama locates 25km from Tokyo to the northern district. A 30min trip by train takes you from Tokyo to Saitama. Direct trains and shuttle bus services are available from Tokyo International Airport (Narita). As you are aware, everything is expensive in Tokyo, but by making only 30min trip from Tokyo, you will be offered a reasonable registration fee, better prices for accommodation and dining, and opportunities to visit scenic places. This is one of the largest advantages this city can provide not only for participants from developing countries and junior scientists or students but also participants from developed countries. We believe that epidemiologists throughout the world will be interested in visiting Japan, and will definitely be benefitted from the academic and social interactions we plan to make . We are confident in obtaining support from the relevant organizations in Japan for ensuring a wellattended and highly successful meeting. If our bid is accepted, we plan to allocate major resources to intensively campaign throughout the world to promote participation in this event. We look forward to hearing a favorable response. Thank you in advance. Respectfully yours, Yosikazu Nakamura, MD, MPH, FFPH Chairman, Promotion Committee of the WCE-IEA, Japan Councilor of the Japan Epidemiological Association 3 Greetings from President of The Japan Epidemiological Association 4 Greetings from Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare 5 Greetings from Commissioner of Japan Tourism Agency 6 Greetings from Governor of Saitama Prefecture 7 Greetings from Mayor of Saitama City 8 Greetings from President of Japan National Tourism Organization 9 Theme and Program Main theme Program Plenary lecture by the President of IEA serving for the term of 2017-2020 • Future perspectives of global/regional/local health and epidemiology in a changing world Plenary lectures on specific epidemiological fields by leading epidemiologists • Infectious disease epidemiology in a changing world • Cancer epidemiology in a changing world • Cardiovascular epidemiology in a changing world • Nutrition epidemiology in a changing world • Occupational health epidemiology in a changing world • Epidemiological methodology in a changing world • Ethics and epidemiology in a changing world Symposia including a special symposium on the role of epidemiology and epidemiologists in a changing world by young epidemiologists from seven regions Workshops including a workshop by young epidemiologists from five continents Regional workshop • Detailed plans will be developed by councilors of each region serving for the term of 2014-2017 with appropriate topics unique to the region.
