Boing Boing began life as a print magazine in the 1980s. By the 2000s, it became one
of the first online weblogs. Today, Boing Boing is one of the most popular online
portals for original feature articles, video and curated picks from around the web - in
their words, “A Directory of Mostly Wonderful Things”.
Even with its popularity, a key challenge Boing Boing faced was converting new users
into loyal fans of their site. With a sizable percentage of traffic coming from Facebook,
Boing Boing wanted to understand how to keep those users onsite for as long as
possible. They also hoped that finding the best headlines and images for each user
would organically perfect their social presence, and keep bringing new users to their
site.
Enter Vidora’s 360 Personalization Platform. Boing Boing started seeing results within
minutes, with only one line of JavaScript added. Leveraging data-driven A.I., Vidora
SmartTitles was able to select the best headlines to show each user, improving click
through rate by up to 170%. When combined with onsite personalization, engagement
on Boing Boing improved up to 250%. Finally, using information gained from onsite
personalization, Boing Boing optimized social posts to drive more users back to the
site.
Vidora improved CTR on Boing Boing’s headlines, increased onsite engagement and improved traffic through social
“Having Vidora is like having a Senior Editor around all the time”, said Xeni Jardin, one
of Boing Boing’s chief editors. “Not only was it easy to set up, it was really simple for
our editors to use, and we saw great results for our headlines immediately.”
“Vidora’s 360 Personalization Platform had a big impact on our business”, said Boing
Boing CEO Mark Frauenfelder. “I think a lot of companies struggle to give each user
the best experience and keep bringing people in through Facebook at the same time which is more important than ever. But Vidora has managed to close that loop in a
really meaningful way without us investing engineering resources.”
