Welcome Remarks from the Dean of Education
Welcome to Queen’s Concurrent Education program. I congratulate you on your academic and extracurricular achievements in high school, which played a critical role in your successful admission.
You are entering the teaching profession at a time when we are preparing our students for a future
that is rapidly changing and has not yet been defined – a truly exciting opportunity. Our goal at the
Faculty of Education is to inspire our students to become progressive, ethical, competent, and
thoughtful leaders. Your classes and practicum placements are opportunities to develop the skills and
values of strong educators who positively influence whomever and wherever they teach.
My wish for you is to become educators who value safe, just, equitable, and open environments for
learning. May you challenge students to explore new boundaries and facilitate change. May you come
to understand and assist those students who struggle within existing school structures. Above all, may
you prepare people to connect and engage with others to create a better world. In all the paths you
travel at Queen’s, may you have a rewarding and transformative learning experience.
On behalf of the Faculty I welcome you to this journey.
Yours in teaching and learning,
Rebecca Luce-Kapler, OCT

Dear Class of 2020,
Congratulations on entering Queen’s and beginning a new era in your life as a student. You are now a member
of an academic community that values and promotes scholarly achievements as well as the various social,
cultural and personal skills demanded by the professional world. Queen’s University welcomes you as a
member of this community and encourages you to challenge yourself to develop the highest scholarly
standards while also involving yourself in the many other possibilities offered here.
Seize the opportunity to be introduced to our academic community and resources by attending the academic
events during Orientation Week. Once the academic year starts, take time to meet your professors, talk to your
teaching assistants, and be ready to engage in all your classes, labs, and tutorials. Take advantage of the many
resources and people available to support you in meeting your academic goals. A positive attitude toward your
academic career is the best way to appreciate fully the many opportunities and experiences that our
community offers you.
As you become a fully engaged member of Queen’s University, we ask you to keep the following in mind. For
first-year students, the pressures accompanying university life can sometimes be overwhelming when
combined with the stress of being away from home for an extended period of time. Therefore, it is not
uncommon for grades to fall in the early stages of the first year. Though marks are an important gauge by
which to judge a student's work ethic and understanding of subject, incoming students should focus on
developing effective study skills, communication with their professors and peers, and an open attitude toward
intellectual life in general.
University life is both a privilege and a responsibility. Therefore, the Queen’s community expects that its
members will respect the rights, dignity, and differences of others, respect city and university property, and
behave in such a manner as to be effective ambassadors for Queen’s at home or abroad. Above all, strive to
realise your full potential, whatever it may be, and learn to know yourselves.
Again, welcome to Queen’s and good luck in your first year of university life.

TEACH EXEC BIOS
Name: Emma Soars
Nickname(s): Emma Crashes
Hometown: Peterborough
Favourite 1st Year Course: English 100
Favourite Thing about Con Ed: What I love about Con Ed, is that our faculty is so
dedicated to the Queen’s community. If you were to go to any club or organization
on campus, I guarantee that you would find at least one Con Eddie. It’s amazing
that so many members of this faculty take time out of their already busy lives in
order to better the ones around them.
Favourite Thing about the Teaches: Everything, just everything. We are so lucky to
have such an amazing group of leaders this year. They are incredibly
compassionate, energetic and truly dedicated. And while they are each unique and
have their own special interests, this simply makes them stronger. They are able to
use their differences to see a situation from multiple perspectives, and yet still
ensure that everyone is included.
Personal Spotlight: I am a proud Con Eddie, going into my third year here at Queen’s! I am studying English
Literature and Theatre, and am in the I/S stream! I hope one day to teach on a Native Reserve so I can learn a new
perspective when it comes to education! I am a complete dog lady, seeing a four legged friend just makes my day!
Words of Wisdom: Never be afraid to reach out for help! I am an incredibly stubborn and independent person, but
what this experience has taught me is that reaching out for help makes you strong. I couldn’t have done any of this
without my team and my orientation leaders. Everyone needs help sometimes and that’s okay.
Name: Michael Taverna
Nicknames: Mike, Mikey
Hometown: Pickering, Ontario
Favourite Thing About Con-Ed: I definitely love how close we are as a faculty. Wherever I
go I always get to see a handful of amazing friends offering warm smiles to make my
Queens’ days even brighter! You’ll hear a lot about ‘Con Ed love’, and it is a very very
true aura, you’ll feel it from day one!
Favourite Thing About the Teaches: The Teaches are an incredible group of people,
being able to work with them is such a dream! Each and every one of them is so so
dedicated to making you guys have the best O-Week ever! They are fun, inclusive,
passionate and incredibly excited for September!
Personal Spotlight: I’m going in to my 3rd year as an I/S student with a Physics major and
Math minor. I’m really in to music and my guitar, I came home from summer camp in
grade 9 and taught myself to play and it was the best decision I ever made! I also LOVE
intramurals! My personal favourite is Innertube Water Polo, however I’ve played soccer,
volleyball, football, and dodgeball as well! I swam competitively for 6 years before coming
to Queens, I really like sushi and can ride a unicycle.
Words Of Wisdom: The transition here is a huge change and university work is nothing like high school! If you check
moodle or OnQ on the Sunday before classes start and see infinity and a half things to do, try to not get
overwhelmed! First year profs do not expect everything to be done on the first day, they are here to help you and will
guide you in being successful! Finally, if things aren’t going well, just know that its okay to not be okay. Queen’s
offers a huge amount of resources to help with any sort of issue. Use the resources if you need them and you’ll be
so happy you did  Good luck with everything and I hope you have a great Orientation Week!

Name: Charlotte Corelli
Nickname(s): Char, Charlottie,
Charmander
Hometown: Toronto
Favourite 1st Year Course: DEVS
100 and HIST 124
Favourite Thing about Con Ed: I love
the fact that Con-Ed has its own little
community, within the greater
Queen’s community. There are so
many different people to get to know,
and these people become familiar
faces who are always there to wave
at, talk to, or give you a hug. Not to
mention Jane Chin, the first year prof
for PROF 110, and Vicky Andrews,
who is great to visit before selecting
your courses for second year. The
incoming class of 2020 is also one of
my favourite things about Con-Ed.
Favourite Thing about the Teaches: Being with the
Teaches, is like winding up five jack-in-the-boxes at once
(but without the terrifying part). They are so energetic and
wonderful and amazing and great, and they when you
pass them on campus, they always give you the best hello
(and sometimes you even get a hug!) Personal Spotlight: I
am an I/S Con-Eddie, entering my third year, and I hope to
teach History and Geography. I love pigs, socks, and
clouds, I do not like spiders, I absolutely cannot sing, and
when I am sick, my go-to movie is Cars.
Words of Wisdom: The start of First Year can seem really
hectic and overwhelming, with so much info flying at you.
Do your best, and remember that everybody is going
through the same transition, whether they are living at
home, or in residence for the first time. If anything, take the
time to get to know the people around you, because they
could be the ones who make up your support network as
you venture through the next couple of years together. The
rest will just fall into place. Also, take breaks, and eat cake.
School is important, but so are you!
Name: Rebecca Unger
Nickname(s): Becs, Bex̄ (“Bexbar”),
Hometown: Ajax, ON
Favourite 1st Year Course: PROF
110 (I <3 Jane Chin)
Favourite Thing about Con Ed: The
people!! The people I have met in
Con-Ed so far are some of the most
wonderful people in my life, and I
have no doubt that it will be the
same for all of you. Con-Ed is filled
with people who are there for you
with endless amounts of support at
all times. Whether it be your friends,
peers, or upper years (oooo
rhyming), you will never have to
face anything alone <3
Favourite Thing about the Teaches: The Teaches are an
incredible group of diverse individuals. These 55 students
have an extreme love for Con-Ed, Queen’s, and Orientation
Week. I have no doubt that this team of Teaches will
provide the Class of 2020 with the most memorable week.
Personal Spotlight: Hi Class of 2020! I am going into my
third year studying Psychology and I’m in P/J. I really love
Queen’s, Iced Coffee from Tims, and Orientation Week
(!!!!). I have been an avid camp-goer for 17 years (and
counting), I’m a Quadruplet, and I love country music and
musicals! I am so excited to meet all of you and I hope you
are all excited for the journey you are about to embark on.
Words of Wisdom: Getting involved might be one of the
toughest parts of entering a new environment, but it is truly
the best way to meet people with similar interests as you
with whom you will create the greatest friendships and
memories. Also, do not feel like you have to be anyone
other than yourself here. You will find your people and you
will soon realize that, especially after becoming a part of
this faculty, you are NEVER alone. Your peers, your
Teaches, Teach Exec, and so many more people are here
for you 100% and we can’t wait to see you flourish. xoxo
Name: Trevor Saccucci
Nickname(s): Turnt Trev
Hometown: Hespeler, Ontario
Favourite Thing About Con Ed: This program is unreal and reinforces why I want to
be a teacher more, and more everyday!
Favourite First Year Class: PROF110 is hype, you’ll love Jane she’s an absolute
eH
gem!
Favourite Thing About Theom
Teaches: The Teaches are an absolutely amazing group
of hard working individuals.
My favourite thing about them is getting to see them
eto
grow as leaders, and become a tightly knit team more, and more throughout the
wn
year!
:
Personal Spotlight: Hey Class
of 2020! I’m so amped to meet you all. I’m in I/S with
teachables in History and Br
Geography, I also dabble in French courses! I LOVE
SOCK WRESTLING SO PLEASE CHALLENGE ME DURING ORIENTATION
aR
WEEK I WON’T SAY NO!!!!
Words of Wisdom: Get to know
OF as many people as possible and really try to
22 and
participate in extracurriculars,
11 this is huge for building time management skills
learning to balance your life between school and fun.

and give really good advice. It’s
nice to have upper years I can count
on to help me with problems and tell

Personal Spotlight: My favorite
TV show is The Office, If my entire
diet could only consist of tacos and
chocolate it would, I believe
laughing and having a good time
can solve any problem, I enjoy
playing sports such as basketball
and badminton and my all time
favorite thing to do is go camping in

always positive and very supportive
with everyone’s needs.
Personal Spotlight: I find my spot
light when I am dancing. Dance has
always been an extreme passion of
mine and I feel free from
everything when I am dancing. It is
a great distraction that helps me
focus and prepare myself for
situations.
Words of Wisdom: Don’t be afraid
to try new things and get involved.

everything is fun and very exciting.
You won’t regret getting involved I

The amazing people especially Olivia
Litt.
Favourite First Year Class:
ARTH120/6.0 Art in the West from
Antiquity to Modernity. It is a
fantastic course that takes a survey
through all different kinds of western
art styles from cave painting to
Ancient Greek sculpture to Medieval

you to dip your toes into all different
types and styles of art and will
change how you look at the colour
blue forever.

Personal Spotlight: I’m a huge
Disney nerd and know every word to

Words of Wisdom: It is easy to get
caught up with school work and
deadlines, but university is only one
part of your life. You are in charge of
what you have for lunch and when
you go to bed, and that also means
what you are going to do with your
time outside of class. Make sure to
give yourself downtime, hang out
with friends, try something new like
Pilates or settlers of catan or debating
at the hundreds of clubs that Queen’s
has to offer.

DELTA
Name: Andrew Bennett
Nickname(s): Andy, Andar
Hometown: Millbrook, Ontario (Outside
Peterborough)
Favourite Thing About Con Ed: My
favorite thing about Con-Ed is the
friends that you make on the first day of
orientation week. These friends become
your family and are an amazing support
system whenever you need them.
Favourite First Year Class: My
favorite first year class, being in B.Mus,
is Keyboard harmony. My instructor is
amazingly funny and very energetic!
Favourite Thing About Teach Exec:
Teach Exec are like the parents of ConEd, and they are there for everyone as
they make everything possible!
Personal Spotlight: Studying B.Mus, I
have learned a fair bit about music. It is
not as easy as many people perceive it to
be, and there are about 60 students
accepted per year. I enjoy all aspects of
music, from history, to theory, to
actually playing, where I can truly
combine all aspects of music!
Words of Wisdom: Stay on top of your
work. Do an assignment as soon as it is
assigned as leaving it to the last minute is
added stress that you DO NOT need.
Find a study habit that best fits you, and
ask someone like your Teaches for ideas
on how to study. Lastly, never forget that
Con-Ed is a family, and we are here for
each other. Never be afraid to ask for
help if you need it.

Favourite Thing About Con Ed:
The people! Honestly I have met
some of the sweetest people in

strongly recommend them both!
Favourite Thing About Teach
Exec: They are so motivated, fun,
and hardworking. They make all
of the events enjoyable and are
really passionate about making
this Orientation week the best one

school for as long as I can
remember. I love traveling,

baking, swimming, and scrapbooking. I
have been involved in High School
Liaison, Kaleidoscope, Generations, and
tutoring! My favourite restaurant is Red
Lobster where I order the Grilled
Chicken (I don’t like seafood… I know
I’m weird), and I absolutely love going
to see a movie in theatres!!!
Words of Wisdom: Be open to new
experiences, as university is a new
chapter in your life, with many ups and

Favourite Thing About Con Ed: My
favourite thing about Con Ed is definitely
the overall atmosphere and inclusivity of

Favourite First Year Class: PROF &
History 124 Professor Maynard is an
absolute sweetheart!!
Favourite Thing About Teach Exec:
They are the ElecTTRiC spark that lights
the love between the teaches and our first
years. But actually, they are probably
some of the most kind, warm &
hardworking individuals out there. I’m
sure they are sacrificing countless hours
of sleep to bring you the greatest possible
Orientation week!! And that fact they are
tall, smart & good looking is a plus!!
Personal Spotlight: I plan on going into
IS, hopefully with an English major &
history minor. Since I spent a majority of
my childhood travelling overseas I would
one day love to teach abroad! I’m a huge
musical fan & BBC mini dramas make
my heart swoon!!
Words of Wisdom: First year might
catch you off guard due to the sudden
changes that come alongside the
university experience but you will
definitely get through it!! You have an
entire community that loves and supports
you, as well as a ton of resources on
campus!! Make sure you look out for
yourself first if things get stressful but
besides that get ready for some of the best
years of your life!!

LOVE! This faculty is the most welcoming

Favourite Thing About Teach Exec: They
are all so genuine and approachable! They
embody everything incredible about Con
Ed from high energy (so ~ElecTTRiC~) and
spirit to support and love.
Personal Spotlight: I’m hoping to teach I/S
with Biology and Chemistry teachables.
I’ve been dancing my whole life (JOIN
QDC) so come bust a move with me at
Orientation week – I’ll be the one shaking
my booty the hardest. I am a seldom serious
poutine/CGC sweet potato fry enthusiast
who makes terrible puns and sarcastic
jokes. I love listening to music, binge
watching Netflix and I want to travel and
teach overseas after my time here at
Queen’s! I cannot wait to meet you all!
Words of Wisdom: First year isn’t always
going to be easy; accept the changes – good
and bad – with open arms and you’ll be
unstoppable. Also, don’t feel guilty for
taking a nap once in a while or having 5 4pieces in one week…we’ve all been there.
Make the most of your first year – you will
love it!

everyone genuinely cares about your
wellbeing. Within the Con Ed family you
will without a doubt be able to find
someone with the same interests as you.
Favourite First Year Class: ENGL 100
and Prof 110!
Favourite Thing About Teach Exec: The
ElecTTRiC energy and creativity which all
the Teach Exec share.
Personal Spotlight: My goals is to teach
I/S with English and History as both my
teachable and major/minor. Aside from
learning how to be a teacher I enjoy
creating music on the piano and
electronically. My biggest passion lies
within athletics, I’ve played a competitive
level of rugby for 6 years and am
continuing to play at Queen’s. If you ever
have a question about Queen’s rugby feel
free to ask me, the club teams are always
accepting of new players!
Words of Wisdom: Meet as many people
as you can and make as many friends as
possible. First year is one of the most
exciting years because you have the
opportunity to start fresh and network with
so many new people. Take as many
opportunities as you can to get involved
within Queen’s. Cha Gheill!!

Favourite First Year Class:
PROF 110 cause Jane is SWEET!
Favourite Thing About Teach
Exec: They're the best of the best
of the best. They are a cube of
best.
Personal Spotlight: That'd be
weird eh? Like if I had a personal
spotlight which was always on
me. I say no thank you to the
personal spotlight, but I will take
a personal moodlight, with a
dimmer switch for romantic
dinners and such. Or a personal
tea light for when my tea is too
dark. Or a personal night light for
when I have nightmares. Or a
personal set of highlights, because
I've been looking for something
new to do with my hair. Really
just any personal light other than a
personal spotlight. K, cool,
thanks.

B.Ed! J
Favourite First Year Class:
MATH111 (go Peter Taylor) and

Favourite Thing About Teach
Exec: Their sense of humour and
their bright smiles <3
Personal Spotlight: I am planning
on teaching I/S with teachables in
English and Math (I know, they’re
like polar opposites). Aside from
academics, you can spot me smiling,
singing and/or dancing at all times.
Suits is currently my favourite TV
show, but in terms of movies, High
School Musical, Harry Potter, and
basically all romcoms are my life!
Fun fact: I do NOT like birds. Oh,
and yes, my birthday is in June.
Words of Wisdom: Don’t be afraid
to approach others first—you’ll be
amazed at how easy it can be to
make a new friend. Also, school
work is important, but allowing

but intramurals, which I think is
like pretty much the same thing
depending on who you play. I am
into the Drama scene. Haven’t
acted in any plays here yet, but I’ve
done stuff outside of school. I’m
doing P/J, and I’m in arts. I’m like
an open book so because I’ve
blanked out on what to say, talk to
me if you’re intrigued by me as a
human being.
Words of Wisdom: Discover who
you are and learn to love that
person. You’ll find stuff about
yourself you never knew. Some are
changeable and other things aren’t.
It’s easiest to just accept who you
are and work it. Also, don’t sweat
the small things you wanna change.
Chances are those things you find
you don’t like, are someone’s
favourite thing about you.

Favourite Thing About Con Ed: The
family atmosphere. Everyone is always there
for each other and supportive of one another.
It’s magical. So much CON-ED LOVE
Favourite First Year Class: PROF110 ! In
what other class do you get to listen to Jane
Chin reaffirm your love for teaching for an
hour and a half?
Favourite Thing About Teach Exec: Other
than their tall-smart-good looking-ness?
Teach Exec are just the best group of people
you could possibly meet. You can’t help but
be drawn to their personalities. It’s like…
ElecTTRiC-ity!
Personal Spotlight: Hello First years!
Welcome to the Con-Ed family! My name is
Erin and I’m a music major, with history as
my second teachable. I love reading and
movies and all things Harry Potter. (Fun fact:
HP and I even share a birthday!) I also have
an unhealthy addiction to musical theatre and
probably speak in song lyrics far too often. I
really really love this little thing called the
Queen’s Con-Ed program. Have you heard
of it? I can’t wait to meet you all during
Orientation Week!
Words of Wisdom: Be yourself! Don’t
worry if you don’t get along with people on
your floor, Queen’s is a big school and you’ll
make plenty of friends. Also don’t waste all
your flex first term, and naps are wonderful.
Name: Bronte McMaster
Nickname(s): bront
Hometown: Georgetown
Favourite Thing About Con Ed: Coming into
Orientation week you already have like 300
friends from your fellow first years and the
teaches which is really awesome! And you can
really be yourself in Con-Ed because this
faculty is so welcoming and caring!!
Favourite First Year Class: FILM 110 is a
super chill and fun course where you literally
just watch movies each week! Also PROF
because Jane is super cool!! B-)
Favourite Thing About Teach Exec: Okay so
otters hold hands when they are in groups in
the water so that everyone is together and they
don’t float away. This is like Teach Exec
because they are super cute, caring and will
hold your hand if you ever feel like you’re
floating away.
Personal Spotlight: If you ever need someone
to talk about tv shows with, I’m your gal!! I am
planning on going into p/j while majoring in
English and minoring in world languages. In
my free time you can usually find me napping,
crafting or eating. My favourite food is pasta
and I’ll probably die one day from eating too
much of it. Finally, I really want to teach
abroad after school because I love the idea of
being fully immersed in another culture!
Words of Wisdom: GO OUT AND GET
INVLOVED!! There are tons of opportunities
in Con-Ed to go out, meet some incredible
people and try fun, new things. 20/20 would
recommend not being afraid to go to events
alone because you’ll always feel included in
Con-Ed!
Name: Marisa Piacentini

Favourite Thing About Con
Ed: I love that everyone is so
friendly and easy to talk to.
It’s simple to go up to anyone
in Con-Ed and start a
conversation.
Favourite First Year Class:
PROF 110
Favourite Thing About
Teach Exec: They are very
approachable and make
everyone feel welcome.
Personal Spotlight: I’m a
PSYC major, English minor
and in the P/J stream. I love to
read, spend time with friends
and watch lots of movies, but
most importantly, I am
looking forward to meeting
the incoming class of 2020. I
am a friendly and
approachable person so if you
ever need anything, I’m
always happy to help.
Words of Wisdom: First year
flies by so quickly so make
sure you enjoy every second.
Don’t be afraid to introduce
yourself to new people, join
different clubs and take
advantage of the caf because
in second year, you’re going
wish you didn’t have to cook
and do your own dishes…trust
me.

Favourite Thing About Con Ed: I
have never felt so close, so loved, and
so accepted in such a large group of
people. Con Ed reminds me of all the
good in the world. Whenever I fall into
one of my bouts of cynicism and
negativity, there is always someone
there to remind me of what it is to be
happy.
Favourite First Year Class:
Philosophy, Moral Issues
Favourite Thing About Teach Exec:
They can power an entire year of light
bulbs with just their smiles. They are
just a wonderful group of human beans.
Personal Spotlight: I write novels and
produce electronic music. I also am
hoping to work at Camp Robin Hood
this summer!
Words of Wisdom: “It is possible for
nobody to be correct, but for everybody
to be right.”-VSauce
“Just try to be true to your idea of what

ORIENTATION WEEK
Favourite First Year Class: PHIL

Favourite Thing About Teach Exec:
How their ElecTTRIC-ity sparks the
motivation in everyone!
Personal Spotlight: Hi, my name’s
Grace! I’m in second year Con-Ed
and am planning to do a
Math/Philosophy medial. How that
happened, honestly I don’t know
because I was terrible at math in high
school, but here we are. My favourite
things to do are to binge watch standup comedy on Netflix, and eat
Doritos, preferably simultaneously. I
also like to SING and DANCE and
AM A VERY LOUD PERSON, so I
promise you that no, I am not aware
that I am yelling. I love meeting new
people and especially like meeting
new people who will laugh at my
really bad jokes. I also love laughing
at other people’s really bad jokes.
Address me with a quote from
Bridesmaids and I’ll hug you and
never let go.
Words of Wisdom: Don’t let first
year get the best of you. You get the
best out of first year.
Name: Carley Rouble
Nickname(s): Carls, Car

Favourite Thing About Con Ed: I love that
being in Con-Ed allows me to be surrounded
by a community of people who all want to
teach! We are all unique in our own ways,
but we all have a similar passion for
teaching which brings us all together,
making a great community!
Favourite First Year Class: My favorite
class in first year was Physics 104/6! <3
Professor James Fraser <3
Favourite Thing About Teach Exec: Tthey
are so welcoming and make you feel so
loved every time you see them! I’m super
excited for all of you to experience all of this
ElecTTRiC CON-ED LOVE!!!! <3
Personal Spotlight: Hi Con-Ed Class of
20/20!!! I am entering third year in
September 2016 and majoring in Chemistry!
I am going go to be a P/J teacher, because
every kindergartener needs to know about
organic chemistry! JK, I just love working
with young kids and chemistry. My hobbies
are travelling, snowboarding…. travelling to
snowboard, playing soccer and photography.
Words of Wisdom: Be true to yourself
throughout university because there is no
better YOU than YOU, and YOU rock!
University is such an exciting time, full of
new experiences, but through it all
remember to remain true to yourself. It is
good to put yourself out there and reach a
little outside of your comfort zone, but
ultimately if you ever feel really
uncomfortable it’s also okay to say no.

teachables are Art and
History, and I plan on going
into the I/S stream! I’m
super out going and love
meeting new people,
hanging out with new
friends, being outside,
travelling and doing fun
things! I got involved first
year by getting an AMS job
at Common Ground and
joining Best Buddies, which
was a blast!
Words of Wisdom: Don’t
compare your first year to
anyone else’s! Your
experience will be different
than your friends and photos
you see on instagram, but
doing your own thing is
when all the fun happens!
Name: Renée Brazeau

Favourite Thing About Teach
Exec: They are ElecTTRiC

Personal Spotlight: I am
planning to teach I/S, major in
Fine Art and minor in French.
I’ve taken Spanish for 6 years
now, and I would love to one
day teach in South America. I
love all things creative, from
painting, to dancing and even
cooking. My life basically
revolves around food, and going
to culinary school is at the top
of my Bucket List.
Words of Wisdom: So many
people say it, but get involved
on campus and in the
community as much as possible.
Joining clubs or attending
events on campus are such great
ways to meet new people and
have amazing experiences in
first year and throughout your
time at Queen’s.

PROF 110
Favourite Thing About Teach
Exec: Emma, Charlotte, Mike,
Rebecca and Trevor they simply
have an ElecTTRiC personality.
They are what all tall, smart, and
good-looking ConEddies strive
to be.
Personal Spotlight: My plans
have changed a lot throughout
first year. Originally it was to go
into I/S with teachables in
Physics and Chemistry. But now
I think I found my place
pursuing P/J. I love to tell
stories, many of which can go
off several tangents and end up
becoming quite long. Random
and obscure facts are my thing.
And finally I love to meet and
get to know people so if you
ever want to talk on any topic at
all, I’m all ears
Words of Wisdom: Never be
afraid to be who you are.
Whatever you value, believe or
are passionate about there is a
place for you here at Queen’s.
There are so many clubs and
committees to be a part of the
only thing you have to do is take
that first step.

love soccer, cats, sushi,
Netflix, Harry Potter and
all things Con Ed! <3
Words of Wisdom: Take

never see change over

finish everything you were

small step is a victory.

The Group Cheer
Alpha:
We’re Alpha dogs we dominate,
Other frosh groups better ‘preciate,
Don’t be mad, don’t be a hata,
Cause we all know we’re better than Beta.
Beta:
Whoa back up, we are the mastas,
We hit you like a natural disaster,
We are the best, we rock the top,
Unlike Delta, we never stop!
Delta:
We are Delta we are the change,
We never worry about being strange,
You know us, we are hardcore,
But Epsilon is such a bore.
Epsilon:
We’re Epsilon, we’re full of Love,
Frosh you’ve never seeeeeeen the likes of,
To mess with us, you’d be a fool,
Just like Gamma, who’s so uncool.
Gamma:
Watch out for gamma and our deadly rays,
You’d be shocked by our crazy ways,
We’re loud and hot and super proud,
Unlike Iota, we own the crowd.
Iota:
Harsh back up, that ain’t fair,
We are I-O, and we’re here to share,
We’ve got the hottest frosh there ever was,
And we shake more booty than Kappa does.
Kappa:
Watch your back, we are the Kap,
We are so dope, we own this rap,
When we come ‘round, better take cover,
Trust Lambda to run for their mother.
Lambda:
We are one, We are all,
We have our own Lambda call,
C’mon Omega you know it’s true,
We say “Baah” that’s how we do!
Omega:
Sure you other frosh groups think you’re fine,
But whatcha gonna do when its breakfast time,
Just call on us, we are number one,
Watch out Phi, we are way more fun!
Phi:
Sure you other groups are fly,
But you can’t mess with frosh group Phi,
We know we rock, we know what’s up,
Come on Sigma, can you keep up?
Sigma:
We are Sigma, we'll take you out
We love to dance, and scream, and shout
And when we rock, we steal the show
Unlike Nu, who have NO flow
Nu:
We are Nu and its best that you know
Were gonna change the status quo
We set the trends, we own this place
Unlike Rho who’s got no grace
Rho:
Rho rho rho… nahhhhhhh step back
Don’t mess with us, we’re on the attack!
Cool story bro, we wrote the book
Omicron- hit the study nook!
Omicron:
We are the Cron, let’s spit some game
This right here’s our claim to fame!
Best listen up cause we speak da truth,
Unlike Pi, we’ve got the proof!
Pi:
3.14159!
We're so chill we never whine
No other group compares Pi
Come on Tau, at least try!
Tau:
Let's toss it up, let's speak some truth
Tau knows y'all are long in the tooth
We are the freshest, it's plain to see
Ancient? That's Zeta to a tee!
Zeta:
Yo snap back, we ain't that old!
Zeta's so hip, you're left in the cold
Let's be honest, no need to boast
Look over there, Alpha's toast!
ALL:
Ok, ok we understand,
All the frosh groups are pretty grand,
What sets us apart, and what puts us above,
Is that we all share, con-ed love
What do we share?
CON-ED LOVE
What do we share?
CON-ED LOVE

Welcome to Con-Ed ’20!
Old School: Con-Ed Camp 2015
The Concurrent Education Students’ Association, or CESA, is Con-Ed’s own student
association and student government. As Con-Ed students, you are all members of CESA,
and we urge you to get involved and participate in all that Con-Ed has to offer. Our
mission is to ensure you have the best time at Queen’s – from the moment you step on
campus and every year thereafter.

Congratulations on your acceptance to Queen’s Concurrent Education!
As your CESA Executive, we are very excited to welcome you to the Con-Ed Class of 2020 and to
have you join the exciting and vibrant Con-Ed community at Queen’s this fall! You should be proud of
yourself for this great achievement. We hope that your time at Queen’s will be full of great memories and
experiences!
As a student in Queen’s Con-Ed, you are a part of the Concurrent Education Students’ Association,
more commonly referred to as CESA. This is your faculty society! CESA has a Council and an Extended
Council made up of Con-Ed Students who are committed to helping you get the most out of your time here at
Queen’s. Whether you are looking for professional development opportunities, social events, or want to get
more involved in Con-Ed, at Queen’s, or in the greater Kingston community, we are committed to helping
you find meaningful and beneficial ways to do so.
The transition to university can be overwhelming at first. It’s okay to ask for help and we encourage
you to do so! There are many support systems at Queen’s ready to help you in whatever way you need. If
you ever want to talk to someone, do not hesitate to reach out to your Teaches (Orientation Leaders) or us!
We are always happy to chat! We all remember what it was like to leave home and want to make your
transition to university as smooth as possible.
We have a very exciting year ahead! Here is a glimpse of some of the events coming up this Fall:
Con-Ed Camp, CESA Days, the Buddy Picnic, intramural sports (volleyball, soccer, dodgeball, curling,
innertube waterpolo and many more!), coffeehouses, professional development workshops, a charity pancake
breakfast and more! There are so many great events coming your way throughout the year so stay tuned for
opportunities to meet Con-Ed students and get involved!
We will be around during Orientation Week at the CESA’s Leaning Tower of Pizza Lunch and the
Sidewalk Sale so feel free to come say hi! The Con-Ed Office, located in the lower JDUC, is also a great
place to reach us throughout the year.
If you have a free moment this summer, we encourage you to check out the Con-Ed website at
http://queenscesa.com, follow us on Twitter @QueensCESA, and like us on Facebook at
https://www.facebook.com/queenscesa?fref=ts. Also, be sure to check your Queen’s email regularly for
updates on upcoming events and opportunities!
We hope you enjoy your Orientation Week and please get in touch if you have any questions about
Con-Ed, CESA, and Queen’s over the summer and next year! We are a resource for you and love receiving
your emails.
Congratulations and welcome to Con-Ed!

Available Positions
There are many ways to get involved in Con-Ed. Join a committee, join an intramural team,
and attend as many events that your schedule can handle! In addition, there are a few
positions within CESA that are reserved strictly for first years. They include:
First Year Representatives (2-person team)
As a First Year Representative, you represent the interests of first year students to Council
and plan and run events throughout the year to bring your year together. First Year
Representatives are also an important part of how CESA communicates with its students by
sending regular e-mails and giving updates in class, among other things. You will be an
integral part of integrating first year students into the Con-Ed family!
First Year Representative to the AMS (Alma Mater Society) (1 person)
As the First year Representative to the AMS, you have the opportunity to sit on the AMS
Assembly (the highest undergraduate legislative body at Queen’s) with the CESA President
and one other upper year representative. The First Year Representative to the AMS reports to
Council about events, issues, and discussions that happened at AMS Assembly. This is a great
way to educate yourself and others about all the things that happen at Queen’s!
The above positions are nominated and elected in the Fall Election Period. Nomination forms
for interested candidates will be made available during the first week back. There will also be
an information meeting the first week back! Voting will take place during the third week of
class!
If you have any questions regarding First Year Elections, please contact our Executive
Administrator, Danyi Wu at [email protected].
First Year Interns (3 people)
As a first year student, the opportunity to get involved in student government to see how it
works is invaluable. There are three (3) positions available for First Year Interns, and these
volunteer positions will be hired in September. Interns will work with either the President
(Jacob Gardhouse), VP Internal (Carma Steenkamp), or VP External (Sherri Patterson). A
snap shot of the job description:
 Assist executive with initiatives throughout the year
 Assist with daily operations of the Association (ex. Administrative duties, Council
meetings, Council meeting preparation)
 Support initiatives under the umbrella so the Executive member
 Engage with the executive member to learn how the Association runs
This position is very much up to the discretion of the first year student and executive
member. We are looking for someone who is organized, flexible, and keen to learn about and
engage with CESA.
Council Clerk (1 person)
There are two Council Clerks volunteer positions on Council, one hired in the Winter and
one hired in the Fall. The Council Clerk hired in the Fall is open to all Con-Ed students
regardless of what year they are in and is hired in the Fall to allow first years to apply.
Council Clerks are responsible for attending every CESA Council meeting and recording the
minutes. The Council Clerk also works with the Executive Administrator to maintain the
Constitution and other Association Documents.
If you have any questions please contact the Executive Administrator Danyi Wu at

“At Queen’s, your educational experience will take you out of your comfort zone. It
will be a time where you experience new challenges. The Queen’s students who have
become before you experienced them too, myself included. Our University is full of
unique, rewarding, and exciting opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom. We pride ourselves on how engaged we are as a student body, and how much
we give back to our school. Embrace your time at Queen’s, and always remember that
you are part of a community that is many times greater than the sum of its parts. Cha

Dave Walker- Vice President (Operations)
“Welcome class of 2020! While this may be a nervous time for many, you are about to
embark on a journey that will be life changing in many ways. It’s okay to be excited,
nervous, scared, and curious when thinking about the year ahead. It will be a surprising to many of you, that Queen’s will quickly become a place you call home. You have
a wonderful opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, try new things, make lifelong friends, and of course immerse yourself within the Queen’s community. Queen’s
has a rich history of student engagement, and I encourage each and every one of you
to find your place on campus. The AMS is a great opportunity for you to get involved
and this handbook serves as a guide to some of what it has to offer. These four years
will go by quickly, take chances, get involved, and make the most of your Queen’s.”
Carolyn Thompson - Vice President (University Affairs)
“We’re so excited to welcome the class of 2020 and see the incredible impact you will
have on our Queen’s community. At this point you’re probably feeling nervous, excited,
and interested in what Queen’s will offer you. Know that everyone has these feelings.
The best piece of advice I can give you is to step out of your comfort zone. In your
next four (or more) years, you will have the opportunity to explore and discover your
passions, both through your education and your extracurricular involvement. Queen’s
extracurricular opportunities are truly what sets us apart from other schools in Canada, and around the world. Learn our history, and our traditions. Embrace the spirit and
the never ending tricolour. We’re all here to learn new things, meet new people and
become better for it. Embrace your years at Queen’s to become who you want to be in
the future and while you’re at it, leave your mark on Queen’s. This is your chance class
of 2020. Welcome home! It’s time to leap into the best years of your life!”
Celebrating 175 Years of Student Engagement
Dear Class of 2020,
Though it seems like eons ago, I can still vividly
remember receiving my acceptance to Queen’s. I don’t
think I have leaped 2 flights of stairs that fast! Looking
back, I remember the excitement and joy that I felt to become a part of a new, vibrant community. What I did not
realize until I arrived for Orientation Week was that I had
been accepted into a family.
You may not know their faces or names yet, but
these new friends are most definitely going through
the same whirlwind of emotions prior to their arrival to Queen’s. Whether these feelings
are that of apprehension, nervousness or perhaps the urge to start running to Queen’s
right now, these are all completely normal! Back when I was entering my first year, I was
nervous about who to lean on while away from home. But, without even realizing it, my
Orientation Leaders made it very clear that they were there for us. Coffee (or tea), a quick
pick me up or just a hug, they are happy to help!
Queen’s Orientation Week is special. It is completely student run-the only one in
North America- with over 1175 Orientation Leaders and 116 Orientation Executives! Each
and every one of these individuals has been hard at work for the past several months
planning and creating the best Orientation Week for you! These leaders all come from different backgrounds and have different experiences to share, whether about university life
or otherwise. Get to know them and those around you, you never know who will become
your best friend!
Now, you may be wondering “What is Orientation Roundtable and why are they
welcoming me to Queen’s?” Well, we have the answer for you! The Orientation Roundtable
is a team of five students who make up the core logistical body of Orientation Week and
who have been working alongside the Orientation Committees to help with the planning
and coordination of all 9 of the Orientation Weeks under our scope. We will be around
throughout the week and stopping by on your events to check in and say hello! If you see
us, please feel free to come chat, we would LOVE to get to know you!
One final thing- though you are coming to a place where there are over 5000 incoming students always remember that you are unique and that is what makes you, you!
Coming to a new place allows you to be completely yourself, allowing your uniqueness
shine through. Enjoy every moment and make each one count!
Finally, welcome to Queen’s and welcome home!

Celebrating 175 Years of Student Engagement
Dear Incoming Queen’s Students,
It is my pleasure and great honour to provide words of welcome and congratulations to the Class of 2020!
Welcome to Queen’s University during its 175th Anniversary; welcome to
Kingston; welcome to your faculty; welcome to the family; welcome home. One
such part of our rich history has been our completely organized and student-run
Orientation Week. For many at Queen’s, faculty orientation is one of many fond
experiences during their time here. As you progress through the week, I encourage
you to make the most of your time. Reach out to as many people as you can during
orientation, get to know the resources that are available to you on campus and
turn to your student leaders for guidance. Ultimately, take the time to enjoy yourself and bask in the bliss
that is Queen’s Orientation Week.
As previously mentioned, Queen’s University is celebrating its 175th Anniversary of being a post-secondary institution. Queen’s illustrious history has always been marked by our incredible “student experience”. There is no other school in Canada, and perhaps North America (perhaps the world), where students
can have their voice heard at high regards, or are provided with numerous opportunities to do incredible
things both inside and outside of the classroom. We have long held the importance of ensuring that our
actions serve to benefit the Queen’s family and the greater Kingston community. As Rector, I am the third
officer of the University and an equal to the Chancellor, Principal, and Vice-Principals. As a student holding
this position, I am a representation of a unique opportunity that students at Queen’s are presented with
to drive what goes on at our University. Whenever it is possible, I encourage you to make the most of the
opportunities here and to get involved with whatever you are passionate about. Whether that is creating a
campus that is accessible and accepting of all peoples, regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation,
race, creed, etc., or supporting a friends struggling with mental illnesses, or playing board games each night,
Queen’s endorses these opportunities with freedom and support. It is a privilege to attend Queen’s, and I
hope you make the most of every minute you spend here.
As the Rector of Queen’s, I am here to represent and support all Queen’s students. The Rector serves
on the Board of Trustees, sits on AMS and SGPS assemblies, and is an observer of the University Senate. In
addition, the Rector sits on various planning and advisory committees on campus. Aside from these more
representation-based roles, the Rector also serves some ceremonial duties by speaking at all convocation
ceremonies and conferring the Agnes Benedickson Tricolour Award on an annual basis. Lastly, but certainly
not least, I am here to support you with anything you might need assistance with. If you are struggling with
anything and don’t know where to turn- my door is always open. If you ever need someone, please drop
by my office in the upper ceilidh of the JDUC (room 124). Nothing I might be working on is more important
than making time for students - please don’t hesitate to reach out, at [email protected] or @queensurector.
I can also help you get involved if that is something that interests you!
Princeps Servusque Es (Be a Leader and Servant),
Cam Yung
35th Rector of Queen’s University
Celebrating 175 Years of Student Engagement
Dear Incoming Students,
Welcome to Queen’s! It is my great pleasure to have you join us in Kingston
during a particularly exciting year as we celebrate our university’s 175th anniversary. I know how hard you worked to get here, which is why I sincerely hope you will
find your years at Queen’s some of the most
rewarding and memorable of your life. The first few weeks of the academic year will
be undoubtedly busy as you adjust to your new surroundings, make new friends,
and get steeped in Queen’s spirit; enjoy every moment.
As a Queen’s graduate myself, I can remember arriving on campus as a firstyear student exactly forty years ago, in 1976. While I was very excited to be here,
I will readily admit that as a less-than-worldly 17 year old, I was also a little nervous. Not only was I living
away from home for the first time, I was also aware of a whole set of new expectations at university that left
me feeling a bit overwhelmed. While it did take me some time to find my feet, before too long, I was up and
running, and having a wonderful time.
In other words, I am speaking from experience when I say that if you are feeling anxious or stressed
at all in the first few months of the academic year, please rest assured that you are not alone. Know, too, that
Queen’s has lots of people and programs to help you navigate the transition to university with confidence
should you find yourself struggling in any way.
While your academic work will be the focus of your time at Queen’s, I encourage you to round out
your experience here by getting involved in extra-curricular activities, both on campus and in the Kingston
community. Not only will you meet like-minded people, you will also develop skills that will serve you down
the road, all while helping to beat stress. It’s something I practice myself through hosting my weekly radio
show on our community radio station, CFRC: no matter how hectic my schedule may get, I can always look
forward to sliding behind the microphone and playing some of my favourite tunes on the air. I invite you to
tune in if you have some time and also to follow me on twitter, @queensprincipal.
Finally, Queen’s is a close-knit community, where respect for others’ beliefs, opinions and backgrounds is among our strongest values. This is a place where you can expect to find the intellectual support
to grow and learn. At the same time, however, you will be expected to make considered, well-informed
choices both in and outside of the classroom. Speaking of which, we have recently introduced new polices
on both sexual violence and non-academic misconduct, which many of our students helped to create. We
take the health and wellbeing of our Queen’s community members very seriously, and count on our students to uphold the university’s relationship with the city of Kingston and its residents through courteous
and respectful behaviour.
I wish you all the best as you begin this important chapter in your life here at Queen’s.
Cha Gheill!

The Student Code of Conduct
All students are required to adhere to the University’s Code of Conduct. Initial responsibility for the enforcement of the
Code rests with the Alma Mater Society (AMS) and the Society of Graduate and Professional Students (SGPS) on behalf of the
Senate. In general terms, acceptable conduct does not infringe on the rights of other members of the University community
and conforms to the regulations of the University and its subordinate jurisdictions and to the law of the land. Hence it must
be emphasized that the University’s system of non-academic discipline should not be regarded as a substitute for the civil or
criminal law but rather as a complementary system that may be derived naturally from our existence as a clearly distinguishable community of interests. The following conduct is unacceptable and constitutes an offence within the University community:
A. A violation of published rules and regulations of the University or of any authorized rule-making body within the
University.
B. Failure to comply with the directions of officials acting within the scope of their authority, including, but not limited to, the Kingston Police, Queen’s Campus Security and the Queen’s Student Constables.
C. Theft, perjury, vandalism, and willful or negligent damage to the property of Queen’s or of a member of the University community, of the AMS, SGPS, or of any other University organization.
D. Assault of any nature; or discrimination or harassment, based, among other grounds, on race, religion, gender,
handicap, ethnicity, national origin or sexual orientation.
E. All forms of academic dishonesty such as plagiarism, cheating, furnishing false information to the University, forgery, misuse of university documents.
F. A violation of the rights of any member of the University community.
Note: Any reprisal, or expressed or implied threat of reprisal, for making and pursuing a complaint under any procedure
authorized by the University is deemed to be an offence against the University Code of Conduct.

First Year Students’ Bill of Rights
As the Queen’s community welcomes its newest members, it is proud to be guided by the following principles:
EQUALITY
First-year students join the University community with all the rights of those already here. They should be
given all the support and assistance which new members of the community require, but should never be
treated as subordinates. They should be made to feel proud to be here – not to feel that Frosh are inferior.
FREEDOM OF CHOICE
First-year students can and should be encouraged to participate in the events of Orientation Week. They
should also always be free to choose when and how to join in, and to decline participation when they wish.
RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY
First-year students come from varied backgrounds and have highly varied interests and values. Differences
in gender, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, and religion should be treated with respect and sensitivity.
The special needs of students with disabilities should also be respected.
RESPECT FOR INDIVIDUALITY
All first-year students are different, and they deserve to be treated as individuals. They should feel free to be
different, and should not be expected to behave in a particular way to be accepted.
PRIVACY
Even when students live together, as in residence, they are entitled to their private space and time. They
should not be disturbed when they have gone to their own room.
