A past director, he helped shape this weekend of music, dance and community. With his wife Kazuko, he graced us with the Japanese Tea Ceremony. He introduced us to musicians and dancers, and shared his pottery as a crafter. We’ll miss his wisdom and gentle humor, but his spirit will live on in the festival. We dedicate the 2014 Shawano Folk Music Festival to David Rand. Pete Seeger (1919 - 2014) Singer, songwriter, activist and our musical conscience. Pete said, “Our distant ancestors, wherever they were in this world, sang while pounding grain, paddling canoes, or walking long journeys. Can we begin to make our lives once more all of a piece? Finding the right songs and singing them over and over is a way to start. And when one person taps out a beat, while another leads into the melody, or when three people discover a harmony they never knew existed, or a crowd joins in on a chorus as though to raise the ceiling a few feet higher, then they also know there is hope for the world.” Let’s sing for Pete. Friday, before the concert Friday, after the concert 6:00 — 6:45 pm in the Food Tent Keep the music going a little longer with an informal jam around the Buckskinners’ campϐǤ some singing under the stars. Conversation with the Performers . . . Stories from the Road . . . Road trips and stories go together, and we’ve all got them. Short trips, long trips - doesn’t matter. We all have stories. Let’s talk about it. WISCONSIN PUBLIC 2 SCAC RADIO August 8-10, 2014 • Mielke Park • Shawano WI Welcome Index Hello, lovers of music, dance and crafts! We’re so pleased you’re sharing a summer weekend with us. Where else can you enjoy blues and swap stories with Buckskinners? Sing with your neighbors and learn to play bottleneck slide guitar? Dance to hot bluegrass and Middle Eastern Beledi music? Share songs and stories with your children and learn about Milwaukee’s garage bands? Hear hundred-year-old songs and music written maybe last month? Find a handmade treasure andǫϐ artists and performers in the country? It’s right here, in Shawano, under the trees in beautiful Mielke Park. We hope to see you there, rain or shine. After all, we can do the planning and the work - the performers can provide the music, but making it a Festival? That’s you. See you there! On behalf of the entire Festival Committee, Nicole Henquinet, John Domkowski & Becky Van Buren 2014 Festival Co-Directors Thank You There aren’t enough words to thank everyone. The Shawano County Arts Council, the many volunteers who do everything you see (and everything you don’t see), the advertisers who’d appreciate your support, the sponsors, supporters and donors. And you, who come to sing, dance and play. Thank you.
