Fall 2004. - Professional Photographers of Iowa
A Word From The President Bruce Belling Hello Again, I hope you are all so busy you barely have time to read this ACTION. I’d like to inform you of some big news. Your board has been very busy making some big changes to move our association in a positive direction and to keep it strong. Heart of America (HOA) has been asked by the other three states to put on a convention every year. They have also been asked by the Professional Photo by Sana Antisdell Photographers Of America’s (PPA) print committee to be more involved with the affiliated print judging. With really no other option available, HOA has started planning for their event to be a yearly event alternating between Kansas City and Omaha in the spring. For quite a few reasons your Iowa board has moved forward with the following changes to its yearly plans. What has been known as the Winter Seminar will grow a bit and take on a few of the characteristics of the Convention and will probably be held in early February. We will also be adding a small one to two day event (Sunday/Monday) in late fall after daylight savings time changes again and we are not shooting as much. This would be a very relaxed and low cost event that will give us a quick break from our craziness in the studio and get us ready for the last push. This schedule will not present any conflicts for all who want to attend HOA. It also lets the Iowa association continue to provide member benefits, build membership and foster the fellowship that is the backbone of our wonderful association. More details will follow as your hardworking, unselfish board pushes forward to complete its normal tasks as well as contemplate, discuss and implement the changes needed for the new schedule in the future. Remember to plan for our upcoming Winter Seminar with some great talent. The event is laid out to encourage you to bring the entire studio. There are programs that are planned for the studio staff as well as the photographers and owners. There also is planned the option of bringing them for the weekend only if they are needed back at the studio. Shoot each session as if it will be your client’s last images, may your bank deposit bags be full and remember to use your time wisely as there is no second chance. I moved back to my home town of Oskaloosa to start renovations on a great space for the location of my studio as well as my home. After four months of destruction and construction on October 1, 2003, Stone Photography was open for business in downtown Oskaloosa. Currently I do not have any regular employees, just a couple people that come in for a few hours to help with random tasks whenever I need it. Now here I am looking forward to meeting new people, exchanging ideas, observing styles I have yet to see, learning new techniques and taking advantage of open bar during hospitality at the convention. Ha! Rose Sieleman Mary Bortz I studied photography at University of Iowa. I have always been around photography growing up and just love it to this day. I started my photography business, Picture Me Photography, 3 years ago and I enjoy photographing weddings, seniors, babies, children, families and pets. I reside in Robins, IA (next to Cedar Rapids) with my husband of 10 years and our 2 daughters age 3 and 6. Our biggest hobby is waterskiing. We are members of the Five Seasons Waterski Team. We perform waterski shows weekly through the summer. Other hobbies are snowskiing, scuba diving and just spending time with our children. Hello! I am Rose Sieleman and I am originally from Charles City, IA but currently reside in Waterloo, IA. I graduated from Hawkeye Community College in May of 2003 with an Associate of Applied Arts Degree. I worked for M&L Photography in Greene, IA for 6 months and decided I wanted to have my own business. So I started Infinite Image & Design out of our apartment doing on-location portraits. This last winter we moved into a house and now I am able to have my studio & office in the house. In the future I plan to do photography full time and to open a studio in either Waterloo or Cedar Falls. I love taking portraits of people; especially children. They have the most creative expressions that are priceless. I also work part time at John Deere Community Credit Union so when I get free time I like to be with my family, go shopping, and attempt to golf! I look forward to meeting many of you at convention and hope to see some old friends!! Howard & Almira Hinton Howard Hinton Jr. was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois where he attended Fenger High School and then continued his education at Iowa State University. He graduated from ISU in 1981. He married Almira in 1984 and moved to Cedar Rapids. They moved to Coralville in 1987 and currently reside there. Howard has been a long standing member of the Iowa City Camera Club. This was his first source of photography education and competition. All of Howard’s photographic education has come from camera club participation, books, journals, seminars and internet newsgroups. He began his photographic career with nature, still life and his children. Then about 5 years ago he was asked to shoot weekly high school football games. Then the natural progression of this was requests for senior portraits, thus Reminders Plus Photography was born. Howard and his wife, Almira, operate the studio from their home. Reminders Plus Photography, became totally digital about two years ago. Converting to digital allowed for unlimited actions shots of football and other sports without development unless purchased. Reminders Plus Photography plans very soon to include wedding photography. 1 Winter Seminar January 2005 Saturday, January 29 9:00 am 11:00 am 1:00 – 4:00 pm 1:00 - 4:00 pm 4:00 – 6:00 pm 6:00 – 9:00 pm 6:00 - 9:00 pm 9:00 – Midnight PPI Board Meeting Registration Desk Open Darton Drake – Depth of Spirit Organizational Program - Franklin Covey Dinner on your own Darton Drake - continues Sue Sandven – Custom Framing & Matting Hospitality* Sunday, January 30 8:00 am 8:00 am All Day 9:00 am - ? 9:00 – Noon 9:00 – 10:30 am 10:30 – Noon 12:00 Noon – 6:00 pm 12:00 Noon 2:00 - 4:00 pm 5:00 - 6:00 pm 6:00 – 9:00 pm 9:00 – 10:00 pm 10:00 - Midnight Registration Desk Open DEADLINE FOR FOLIO ENTRIES Photogenic/Digital/Finished Product Check-in Folio Judging Don Lohnes – Master Series Scott Kurkian - Using your CPA Greg Stangel - Telephone Technique Trade Show Open Lunch on you own – Visit Trade Show Wedding Demo in the Trade Show Food & Friends in the Trade Show Greg Stangel - Sales Willie Farrell - Comedian Hospitality* Monday, January 31 All Day 8:00 am 8:30 am 8:30 – 11:30 am 8:30 – 11:30 am 10:00 – 2:00 pm 11:30 – 1:30 pm 1:30 – 4:30 pm 1:30 – 4:30 pm 5:00 – 5:30 pm 5:30 – 6:00 pm 6:00 pm – Midnight Vote for your favorite Finished Product Registration Desk Open Deadline for Photogenic/Digital Entries Steve Larson - Marketing Primer for Photographers Troy House – Location Secrets of a Fashion Photographer Trade Show Open Lunch in the Holidome (included in your registration) VISIT THE TRADE SHOW Steve Larson - Priced right, making money, retiring happy DR Roberts - Family Groups New Member Reception Pre Banquet Hospitality* AWARDS BANQUET & AFTERGLOW (Included in your registration) Tuesday, February 1 6:00 - 7:00 am 7:00 - 9:00 am 7:30 - 9:00 am 7:30 am 9:00 am - 1:00 pm 1:00 pm 2 Flea Market Setup Flea Market Sales Breakfast (included in your registration) CPP Breakfast Meeting Cindy Baxter – Rags to Riches with Children’s Portraiture MAJOR DOOR PRIZES, SCHOLARSHIP DRAWINGS! *Alcoholic Beverages will be served, ID’s WILL be checked! CPP Summer Event 2005 Dates To Remember On July 26, 2004 the Certified Professional Photographers of Iowa held their annual summer event. We trekked across northeast Iowa visiting 4 studios of the Waterloo/Cedar Falls metro area. Three of these young and ambitious individuals are all new studio owners within the past seven years, which gave a different perspective of how their ideas and photography attract a diverse clientele base. We started at Cooper Image Design, on the Parkade in Cedar Falls. Karen Blough, owner, shared with us the way she sells and markets products that are built into her session fees. Also, how, she and a few friends have built their own on-line based ordering. Karen’s studio is very hip, and comfortable. Stop in and say hi the next time you’re in Cedar Falls. We then traveled north about 20 miles to Waverly. Nichole Priebe Photography was our second stop. Nichole shared how she got started in photography and also what makes her studio desirable to the senior market. Waverly has 5 well known studios so it makes marketing a job in its own right. Nichole has owned her studio for about 5 years and just purchased her first “house” or flat just down the street from the studio. Next we took a 25 minute drive northeast to Sumner. We stopped at Tiedt Photography West, where they are temporarily located in a strip mall west of town until the downtown location is being reconstructed from their fire in May. Brian shared details of the fire and covered some information about insurance, and data recovery. After all that, we needed a bite to eat! Dwight & Jan Wedemeier opened up their home for a catered picnic-style lunch. Christy Brinkopf, PP of I secretary, and “The Chef Gourmet”, helped Jan with lunch and made a couple wonderful cool sherbet desserts. Thanks to Dwight & Jan and Christy for all their help. Following lunch we buzzed up the street to Barb Grabill’s in-home studio. Barb & Steve renovated part of their garage and put in an incredible north-light studio. Barb shared with us how to work in a small space and use different fabrics for background. She also explained a little on her low volume business, and enjoying life while working from home. Finally we ended back at Tiedt Photography East, the downtown Victorian house and gardens. Brian, Jan, and Wendy gave a tour of the gutted studio, with stripped wall paper and black soot walls. It was a real eye opener on how much damage can happen in just a short period of time. They also shared more information on insurance coverage, and toured the studio gardens. The Tiedt Garden Studio was in full bloom. As we toured, Brian shared the names of some of the exotic vegetation growing in the burm. It was a lot of fun to travel around the countryside and see how so many studios keep alive in such a small market area. We invited non-CPP’s to attend with a CPP to help spark some interest in becoming a Certified Professional Photographer. Jan 29- Feb 1, 2005 PP of Iowa Winter Seminar Airport Holiday Inn Des Moines, IA April 2-6, 2005 Heart of America Biennial Convention & Expo Overland Park Convention Center Overland Park, Kansas www.hoappa.com June 5-9, 2005 MAIPP Mid-America Institute of Professional Photography University of Northern Iowa 19 CPP News It’s not too late to register for the CPP trip to Tybee Island, GA. next February. If you would like to join us please contact our Executive Secretary, Christy Brinkopf. The trip to the Savannah area is always a great time and full of learning and “shooting” opportunities. The trip is an incredible bargain at only $200 per person which includes your room and board for the week (transportation is on your own). And with the trip being held February 27th-March 5th, what a wonderful time to get out of the Iowa weather and drabness and enjoy some warmth and flowery green scenery. Response has been good so far and we are looking forward to a great turnout of fellow CPP’s to share knowledge and fun with. So contact Christy if you would like to come along…… the more the merrier as they say. 18 LEGAL NOTICES A C T I O N Deadlines Winter . . .November 1 Spring . . . . .February 1 Summer . . . . . . .May 1 Fall . . . . . .September 1 Minutes of the Meetings of the PP of Iowa Board of Directors are available upon request to: Christy Brinkopf PO Box 108 Sumner, IA 50674 [email protected] 563-578-1126 Do you have an idea for an article? Photog, Cr., PPA Cert Cindy opened Studio C Creative Images in the spring of 1989. In the past 15 years she has had success, failure and then great success. Her studio in New Martinsville, WV has grown from a studio selling sessions for $5 and packages from $19.95 to a high end studio with a $1200 average. In 2000 Cindy was the first woman in the history of the state of West Virginia to earn the title of “Photographer of the Year”. She has held the title for the past 4 consecutive years. Cindy was also awarded 2003 Triangle “Photographer of the Year”. She has seven PPA Loan Prints, five Fuji Masterpiece Awards and two Kodak Gallery Awards. In her program “Rags to Riches with Children’s Portraiture,” she will teach you her recipe for a successful children’s studio with high portrait sales averages. Her journey from low-end photography studio to high-end portrait art studio will inspire and excite every level of photographer. Learn how children’s theme portraiture catapulted her studio to the premiere children’s studio in the Ohio Valley and grew her revenue leaps and bounds in just 5 short years! Newest Trends in Framing Photographs Susan Sandven Susan Sandven from Deck the Walls Framing will cover the newest trends and methods of framing your work for today’s home décor. If you are not currently framing or stuck in a rut, don’t miss this program on where framing is today. She will cover style, care & preservation of new photographic mediums, and bring a mat cutter for those wishing to try hands on cutting. Even if you are not currently selling frames, this program will help you sell your photographic work in today’s market. 3 2005 Winter Seminar Depth of Spirit Darton Drake Capturing the spirit of another human being is a privilege. Our jobs as portrait photographers are not only to create a physical likeness of the subject, but to try and record the beauty of their spirit in an artistic and pleasing way that will touch their hearts and move their spirits. This program will deal with portrait photography as an art form and expression of the human spirit. To me, the definition of art is simple: it’s an outward expression of an inner emotion. The complete scope of artistic qualities to produce a beautiful salon portrait will surpass the expectations of your customers and produce a handsome income for your studio will be presented. The span of this program will be from creating a powerful moving senior portrait to an elegant renaissance portrait of a child with just a bit of fantasy added. Some elements to be covered are: composition, cropping, exposure, balance, angle, color harmony, proper background choice, lens choice, and props or sometimes more importantly, “the lack of props.” The class will cover an artistic approach to imaging of portraits. It will cover composition, lighting, emotion, passion, and different flavors of people’s personality. It will deal with minimizing the technical and enhancing the spiritual. This is not a step-by-step process of how to take pictures. It is about creating portraits of power! 4 About the Cover Award Print “Prevailing Love” was shot with a Canon 10D and a 24-70mm lens, ISO 800, F2.8 at 1/100th. The bride was seated on a piano bench and looking towards an east window in a dark-paneled Sunday School room. We brought two of her flower arrangements in from the front of the church and placed them into the background atop the seating area of a rock fireplace. There was a large white marker board in the Sunday School room, so we rolled it up beside her to help reflect some light back onto her shadowed side. Shooting at ISO 800 left the image quite “noisy,” so I applied some softening (Gaussian Blur) in PhotoShop to help minimize it. Best Friends for Life Barb Grabill I don’t know when it happened, but somewhere along the way my best friends became photographers. So I didn’t have to look very far when my daughter Valerie announced her engagement, to know who would capture one of the best days of my life. It all happened May 29th on a beautiful 80-degree day in Sumner, Iowa. It wasn’t the biggest church in town or the fanciest wedding of the year but the images sure made it appear so. I don’t know how I can ever repay what Brian, Cindy, Rita and John did for me that day. Brian was still reeling from the studio fire, 3 days before that, and yet no one could tell that day, he pulled on his professional face and made it fun as always. His images carry all the talent and experience he is known for and I am forever grateful. Cindy came in the Thursday before the wedding and created a set of fun, passionate images of Valerie and Justin-once again I have a thankful heart. Rita followed us around quietly all day, while Doug created SX70 Polaroid’s. Her black and white story makes me cry every time I look at them and remember. John filled in from different angles with long lenses, images that I love of my family and friends. Behind the scenes Toni Harryman drove all the way from Des Moines to bring beautiful flowers for the reception. Best friends? You bet… for life. New Member Lisa Hazlett Lisa Hazlett, a native of Mount Vernon, Iowa, opened Envisage Studios in January, 2000. From her basement, to an uptown loft and now a main street sales office and gallery, Lisa is enjoying her new career. Lisa attends MAIPP every year, is a member of PPA, PPI, NEIPP and received her certification this spring. Her involvement with these professional organizations has helped her excel in business, push her creativity to new levels and form lasting friendships. Photography has always been a big part of her life, in the past as a hobby, and now a livelihood. Lisa has been digital for over three years and is very excited about the doors that are opening to the world of photography. 17 Iowa Photographers Merit Prints PPA’s Imaging USA Name Amy Becker JoAnn Belling Thomas Belling Paul Blaser Nancy Brechler Cindy Diemer Troy Eiffert Addie Eversmeyer Gary Fagan Suzanne Fischer Heidi Hardy Bob Hawkins Kalen Henderson General 4 2 1 1 4 1 2 3 3 Loan General Book 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 3 1 2 1 Name General Eric Hinders 1 Courtney Hinkel 1 Shannon Holmberg 4 Adam Hunter 1 Craig Kienast Lem Maurer 1 Lon Monahan 3 Lori Nordstrom 2 Doug Pierson 1 Jean Poland Brian Read Jon Read Wes Siebe 2 Tom Strumpel 2 Loan 1 General Book 1 1 4 2 1 2 3 3 3 Committee Assignments 16 Seminar/Convention Chairman President: Bruce Belling / Co-Chair: Barb Grabill Don Lohnes Classes 3rd year board: Michelle Wilbur Area Seminars/New Members/Senior Shoot Out or Computer Showdown? Roberts D.R. Roberts has not always been a professional photographer. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University with an M.S. in Education degree with minors in Zoology, Botany, and Health. Prior to photography, he taught and coached basketball at both the college and high school levels. In 1984, D.R. began a “full-time” career in photography. Although starting primarily as a wedding photographer, within one year, his studio was photographing 1000 high school seniors and over 50 families a year. In 1991, he became a Master of Photography. Eleven of his 14 print merits for were family portraits. As his photographic business grew, he hired an associate photographer, and opened a lab. Today, his studio still photographs weddings, high school seniors, and families, but no longer with film. In May, his studio went totally digital, and in August, his lab closed down the film based side of the business, doing only digital imaging. D.R. is a Past President of APPI, an eight year member of the Decatur School Board and most importantly, a father of three sons. The focus during this session will be on traditional family portraiture outside of the studio. We will concentrate on environmental and in-home type sittings. We will cover the consultation, the set-up, the photography and the sale. Discussion about digital versus film will also be a part of the content. The technical and technique will be covered, but more importantly, the why. Hopefully every attendee will leave with an understanding on how to technically create a pleasing family portrait, but even more importantly than that, a desire to capture images that will someday be heirlooms and testaments to the legacy of those departed. 5 2005 Winter Seminar Marketing 101 Priced Right, Making $ Steve Larson, PPA Certified, M. News from the Board of Directors... The PP of Iowa Board of Directors has been making some exciting changes and you need to know about them. For a host of reasons, the HOA Board of Directors has elected to have a yearly convention that will alternate between Omaha and Kansas City. We, of course, saw this as an opportunity to change the look of our conventions and we did. First of all, in November of 2005 we will have our first annual fall event. We are currently planning a small get-together that will kick off on Sunday, late in the afternoon, and continue through Monday. It will be a lowcost event and provide a chance to get together with our friends, decompress and learn something too! Starting in 2006 there will be a new face on our winter and spring functions. Instead of two conventions close together, we will now have one jam-packed event in early February called Imaging Iowa. It will the best of all worlds. Our plan is to make it a fun learning experience for everyone. We will have our annual print judging for those competition junkies, along with Mr. and Ms., Lil Mr. and Ms., Finished Product Competition, Iowa Marketing Awards, Iowa Digital Competition and Folio Competition all at one event! If you like competitions but don’t want to try the print competition yet, there are several other chances to get involved. All entries that qualify will be displayed and the opportunities to learn from the array of images alone will be enormous at Imaging Iowa. After our convention you will have an idea of how your images measure up and have time to tweak them for the regional competition, which will be held in conjunction with HOA from now forward. Imaging Iowa will be a fun event with local and national talent, parties and hospitality. We will be hosting one of the first conventions of the year, here in Iowa, which will still be the most reasonably priced learning opportunity in the Midwest. We hope you will be as excited as the board is about this new opportunity. This passion is fueled by the belief that all have creative energy that flow through them. He helps them tap into that river MICHAEL of energy. From the soul come many wonderful things.
