The
WOOLSAFE
Mark has
gone Green!
The WOOLSAFE Organisation
has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal
and EcoLogo in North
America, to enable those
WOOLSAFE approved products
that are ecologically responsible
to be recognised and
promoted as such.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark
identifies those products that
not only are the most
suitable for wool and other
quality carpets, but also have
the right environmental
characteristics.
Regular Maintenance
Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and
maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and
thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage
the fibres.
Deal with spillages as soon as possible,
preferably the moment they occur.
Periodic Cleaning
When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could
do with a really good clean, you can either do the job
yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning
company.
If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself
make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved
products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:
WOOLSAFE-approved carpet
care products have been
independently and scientifically
tested and are safe and
effective for cleaning and
maintaining all types of carpets
and rugs.
General Rules for
Spot Removal
• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet
roll or clean cloth
• Scoop up or scrape off solids
Chemspec Europe is one of
the first WOOLSAFE Licensees
in the UK to have a ‘green’
product certified. It is expected
that other products will follow
shortly.

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment –
if unsure, use solvent first
• Always work from the edge of the spot inwards
• BLOT, do NOT rub
• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time,
applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work
into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge
• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed
carpet tiles
• When using solvents always ensure there is plenty
of fresh air ventilation
• Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters
with clean water
• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer
Housekeeping Tips for
Carpets and Rugs
Entrance or walk-off mats
The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the
house is highly recommended, as they will significantly
reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should
be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed
from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly
themselves.
Protective treatments
Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to
reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments,
while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will
eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular
cleaning is still required.
Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer
can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE
accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest
WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our
website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE
HOUSEHOLDER section.)
Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres,
including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the
WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet
manufacturers!

Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids,
soaps or other cleaners recommended for general
household use. Although they may clean the carpet
satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems
such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage
to the pile or backing of the carpet.
They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug
complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers,
retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can
carry out or commission tests where required, and will
provide comprehensive reports.

COLOUR MATCHING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as
creels - and usually each batch produces
between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width,
depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe
used by the dyer remains constant, and is
followed to the letter, in each separate
production the colour reproduction will vary
from batch to batch. However production is
matched back to the original or master
sample to ensure that the colour remains
‘within a commercial tolerance’.
This process if not an exact science and a
commercial tolerance is subjective but
nevertheless is usually the professional
judgement of the head dyer based on his/her
experience.
A greater level of tolerance is required on
blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure
perfect colour matching it is advisable that a
single width be used in any installation
requiring exact colour matching.
N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile
travelling in different directions, even though
they be from the same batch will appear not
to match.
For further information please check with the
manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES
The samples held by individual retailers may
not be from the same batch as current
production and therefore should be used as a
guide and not an exact colour match.
The original carpet tile
SHEDDING
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which
is created during production when spun yarn
is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto
the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be
removed without detrimental effect upon the
carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre
is only a small fraction of the total fibre
contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by
responsible manufacturers
to help you help your customer
to make
an informed choice.
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet
where one or more loops in the continuous
pile is pulled through the primary backing of
the carpet. This is usually due to some local
condition, possibly some sharp object which
has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted
in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by
trimming the offending end level with the
rest of the pile. They should not be left as this
could result in further loops being pulled and
developing into a ladder.
• shedding • pulled loops
SPROUTING
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its
way to the surface and stand proud of the rest
of the pile. This is probably due to one end of
the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J
shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial
action merely requires that the offending tufts
be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the
pile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADING
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet
has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a
different direction to the natural lie of the pile
whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at
differing angles resulting in the creation of
light and dark patches on the carpet. This will
occur on all pile fabrics but can be more
noticeable on plainer carpets because the
shadows created by pile pressure will not be
disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATIC
Carpets do not produce static but like other
household fabrics and objects have the
capacity to store it. Static is caused by the
build up of static electricity upon personnel
in a dry environment and is discharged when
a person makes contact with an object which
can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or
filing cabinets, etc).
The static charges will vary in intensity
depending upon the individual, air humidity
and the contact materials. Static is more
usually associated with synthetic materials as
they do not retain moisture very well but it
can and does occur with wool in very dry
room conditions.
include
the
measures
Preventative
introduction of moisture into the room or in
situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in
use. The degree of fade can vary depending
on the colour chosen and the local conditions
to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra
violet light which is found in daylight, but is
accelerated when sunlight shines directly
onto the carpet. This has the effect of
lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as
exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.
Wool is after all animal hair.
Protection should be given to carpets exposed
to such conditions just as you would protect
other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered
justified if it failed to meet the required shade
standard when tested to the British Standard
BS1006 (1990).
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
PILE REVERSAL
(SEE SHADING)
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap
of the carpet changes direction and thus
reflects light at different angles showing the
effects of shading which can become
permanent. It is also described as
‘watermarking’. This can happen to every
carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton,
Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian
or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be
more apparent on plain carpet because heavy
patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur
quite quickly after installation. A tremendous
amount of research has been carried out over
many years by many institutes to determine
the cause of this phenomenon but none of it
has proved conclusive. There is no commonly
known manufacturing process which can
cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore
it is not a manufacturing fault. For further
information please check with individual
manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point
load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is
unreasonable to expect the carpet not to
indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place,
the longer will be the time for the pile to
recover. In the case of very heavy loads in
place for a considerable time, the recovery
time can be very considerable.
It must be remembered that it is not only the
pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the
underlay will also indent and the backing of
the carpet may also distort into the
indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s
will recover well and some less well
depending upon their composition, thickness,
density etc.
The use of cups below furniture legs can
spread the load and the net result is a larger
area of less deeply indented carpet.
The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy
static load can be measured in the laboratory,
using the test method described in BS 4939
and many manufacturers will have data on
this aspect of carpet performance. In this test
the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the
degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour
and 24 hours. Since there are so many
different underlay’s however, it is very rare
for the recovery from a heavy static load to be
evaluated on carpet and underlay.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning
with a rotating brush machine) will speed up
recovery but in the case of serious
indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth
or a steam iron together with a blunt darning
needle to carefully tease up the pile can be
beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet
the carpet, of course.
FLATTENING
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic
which eventually flattens the pile particularly
in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will
flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant
on the amount of traffic to which it is
subjected and the construction (tuft
density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the
product concerned.
SOILING
Soiling is usually the result of some local
condition to which the carpet has been
subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of
maintenance programme. There is nothing we
as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in
use. There are several types of soiling which
are quite common:
Spillages
- Liquids such as soft drinks,
cordials or any drink which contains sugar,
particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a
stain. In such instances, professional help
should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can
result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil
carpets in various ways, apart from the
obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting
boards for instance, dark lines appearing on
surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards.
Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be
seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes
shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due
to the air carried on a draught under the
carpet escaping through minute holes both in
the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust
deposited on the pile much like a filter action.
In such installations, the use of a lining paper
is essential as a preventative measure.
T HE R EGENCY
Collection
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise
the consumer when the carpet is measured of
any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or
floorboards and the consumers responsibility
to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts,
is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a
resulting complaint is to be avoided.
INSTALLATIONS
We recommend that all carpets are laid in
accordance with BS5325:2001 (a copy of which
can be obtained from your library or HMSO)
or as per National Institute of Carpet Fitters
installation manual (Tel 0115 958 3077) for
further information.

TUFTED
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet
produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of
carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet,
hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary
backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A
heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a
secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide
variety of styles and textures can then be created using various
techniques.
LOOP PILE
Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade,
bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia.
The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon,
polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect
underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and
may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly
flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual
appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres.
The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend
between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three
loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very
forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high
traffic areas and busy family rooms.
CUT PILE
Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony,
but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set.
They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly
texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and
dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should
be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together
to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and
vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.
More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
WOVEN
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but
still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for
prestigious installations.
Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing
as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a
velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of
high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.
The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –
although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned
axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to
axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre
is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create
a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality
carpet of unrivalled durability.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat
weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a
wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish.
These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily
and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres
lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for
occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP
When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of
surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of
colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and
stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general
purpose rooms in the home.
Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to
50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface
flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is
tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is

Underlay
In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and
laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best
opportunities to add value to every sale - with good
profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are
understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.interfloor.com
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that new
underlay is always required, the only decision is which
type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.
www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can
walk on samples with different grades of underlay and
feel the difference has shown excellent results - some
manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
Benefits
Good underlay will...
• Improve underfoot comfort
• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening
• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear
• Improve thermal insulation and warmth
• Increase sound insulation
• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections
• Last the lifetime of the carpet
Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming
• Reduce carpet life
• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots
• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly
• Not meet British Standards
How thick?
A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with
gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy
traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination
of thickness and density is all important as a thick
underlay with low density may not perform well.
Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will
need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations
with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber

Crumb
PU foam
Types
Sponge rubber
The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or
waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different
applications. It performs well for comfort and has a
durable spring retention.
PU (polyurethane) foam
PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically
made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides
excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of
thickness options - and its light weight helps handling.
The product can be re-cycled again after use.
Crumb rubber
Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall
- offering maximum protection but a little less comfort
(and very good over stair nosings).
Laminate underlay
There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate
flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor
and helping the boards float above any imperfections in
the sub-surface.
Combination
A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good
combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also
allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
Underfloor heating underlay
Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers
offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a
combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means
the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.
Felt
This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is
made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to
create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.
Still a very popular choice among contractors when
stretch fitting woven carpets
Pre-tackified underlay
A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt
and PU. A removable system for heavy use when
comfort is desired

Brintons make planning a pleasure
The revival of pattern in the home has meant that, at long last, beautiful
designs are making a welcome return to our floors. Magazines are
rediscovering the sheer pleasure and elegance that a patterned floor can
bring to a room scheme, with the comfort and luxury that only carpet
can give.
With Brintons luxurious collection of highly versatile designs it’s easy to plan
schemes that will enhance the sense of space and harmony in the home.
Brintons pride themselves on making co-ordination really simple: many of
their patterned ranges have different scales of designs in the same colours
to make it easy to style adjoining rooms. Many of the colours used in their
plains are also used in their patterns, meaning that as you look through
Brintons carpet ranges it’s easy to find a match if you want to combine
plains and patterns. Different widths help plan hall, stairs and landing
schemes.
With Brintons, consumers find not just luxury, but also the help they need
to achieve a stylish home. Carpets can be viewed on-line in the exclusive
“view in a room facility”. Each carpet has a colour card which gives a
palette of colours selected by Brintons design team that coordinate with the
chosen sample.

V
OF THE TRADE
Bob Lawton of Carpenter Underlays
Age: 64 and a (big) bit Job Title: National Sales Manager. Underlay Division
Years with present company: 3 Years in flooring industry: 48
Previous roles, retail: Ford Escort driver, Riding Hall Carpets;
Water Carrier, Gripperrods
manufacturing: Sales Director & Managing Director, Ball & Young;
Managing Director, Bestbase; Spear Holder, Interfloor.
Main non-work interests: Most sports, Rock’n’Roll,Wine tasting and balti
shovelling, shouting obscenities at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Very difficult. I’ve been out and about all year working with our
wholesale partners. The retailers, at most levels, are definitely
finding it tough going. There are some bucking the trend though...
how do they do it?
“
What’s the key market challenge today?
Moving carpet and underlay up the Consumer Buying Index. Once
we were up there with holidays, double glazing and fast cars… now
we’re vying to make the top 25 with George Foreman’s Lean Mean
Fat Grilling Machine.Yourfloors.co.uk is a positive move forward.
What’s the single most important key to success in flooring?
Knowing your products and their applications inside out. It breeds
confidence that the consumer soon picks up on... and that results in sales!
Which companies in the trade most impress you?
Carpet manufacturers that don’t make ‘felt backed’ carpets and
retailers that don’t sell the stuff. Why on earth do retailers do this?
It’s a massive loss of revenue and it does nothing for the reputation
of their business, nor the carpet trade!
What’s your favourite flooring product
Ceramic Tiles on the patio of a Mediterranean villa with a bottle of
cold Pino Grigio sparkling in the evening sun. (Anyway of putting
underlay underneath ceramic tiles? ...some research needs doing)
If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what
would it be?
To stop forcing the poor wholesale rep to reduce his underlay by
50p a roll and instead, add £1.00 sqm on the selling price. Then see
what a difference it’ll make to the bottom line over 12 months!
In all your time in the trade, what has most surprised you?
That the underlay market in Northern Europe has remained so
small, particularly Germany. At Domotex you need SatNav just to
get round the halls displaying wood floors and rugs.
And most disappointed you?
30
Sweden. I quite like Abba and don’t mind Volvo cars with their
headlights on …but laminate flooring and dustmites …what was all
that about ? Mama Mia !
November 2008
Why do retailers sell felt-backed?
It’s a massive loss of revenue
and does nothing for the
reputation of the carpet trade!
“
How would you describe current markets conditions now,
compared to a year ago?
Bob Lawton
Who has been your biggest influence in business?
Without doubt, Jim Young. He was my MD at Gripperrods in the
70s and Ball and Young (yes, that Young) in the 80s.
What was your first job in flooring?
Retail carpet salesman at Lee Longland in Birmingham. Those were
the days of Brylcreem, drainpipe trousers and Numdah rugs.
Underlay? …that was felt wasn’t it?
Would you advise a member of your family to come into the
flooring industry?
Already have. My son Adrian works for the Landsdon Group.
If you didn’t work in this industry, what would have been
your second choice career?
Putting aside the fact that I missed the audition to become the fifth
Beatle, …I was a professional cartoonist for 18 months, but, the lure
of selling carpet underlay to the eternal gratitude (well, for at least as
long as the guarantee lasted) of the human race brought me back.
There was also a new Cortina and double-bubble commission
involved, if I remember.
What’s the oddest thing that’s happened to you in the trade?
Lord Peckham, when he was Sir Phil ‘arris, once bought underlay off
me... and it wasn’t rubber!!!
How are environmental issues likely to impact the industry
and consumer behaviour?
Every other Tuesday morning our avenue looks like there’s been an
industrial Tupperware party. Colour coded plastic containers for
glass, paper, plastic, garden waste, left over food... and soon? carpet,
vinyl, lino, laminate flooring, underlay... it’ll affect us all at trade and
consumer levels. Recycling is becoming more important as landfill
becomes more expensive... and scarce.

OFT shows support for campaign against misleading prices
In a demonstrable sign of support, Charles Wallace, head of Consumer Codes at the Office of Fair Trading, visited the Carpet Foundation to identify ways in which
their Consumer Code of Practice could be improved and also industry wide issues that needed addressing.
The day long session looked at how the Foundation’s Code of Practice could be amended and improved in a bid to further increase its effectiveness. In an
interesting development, areas under consideration included product accreditation; training and accreditation of fitters; improved service and pricing transparency.
The Foundation took the opportunity to point out that its retail members were identifying more and more cases of misleading pricing policies from certain retailers
which was a cause for concern and gave rise to unfair competitive advantage. In a welcome move, the OFT said that it was prepared to consider investigating the
legality and impact of these malpractices. Evidence is now being sought from Registered Specialists to support this claim.
Charles Wallace also confirmed that the new Doorstep Selling Regulations did apply to carpet retailers who conclude the contract in a consumer’s premises during
a measuring and estimating visit.
Mike Hardiman, Chief Executive of the Carpet Foundation commented:
“It was an excellent meeting and Charles’ approach was most refreshing.
We were particularly encouraged by his belief that the Code of Practice
should become more of a ‘living’ document with continuous improvement.
“The issue of ‘misleading pricing’ is a real bugbear for our retailers.
Some retailers make wildly exaggerated claims about the ‘normal’ or
‘recommended’ prices of carpet products on sale so that they are able to
give seemingly generous discounts to consumers. This misleads
consumers into thinking they have bought a high value product at a
bargain price and this adversely affects retailers who use honest pricing
policies.
Left to right: Mike Hardiman, CF Chief Executive; John Duncan, CF Chairman, Charles Wallace, OFT,
Jeff Lane, CF Technical Director, Peter Lynas, Lynas Carpets and Rupert Anton, CF Marketing Director.
“Our members want us to become more hard nosed and commercially
focussed and what a breakthrough this would be for the trade if we could
put an end to misleading pricing.”

Flower on Flooring
by Dennis Flower
Fleet of foot
With global economic meltdown gleefully predicted by the national media on a
constant basis, it's unsurprising that retailers in many sectors of the market are
seeing reduced footfall and, in several cases, a corresponding fall in sales.
A stalled property market is frequently linked with less demand for interior
goods, but it can have benefits in other areas. Consumers electing not to move
house often decide to make their home more comfortable and there are few
things more comforting than good quality carpet underfoot.
But consumers are increasingly expecting better levels of service, which does
not necessarily involve getting their goods faster. Prompt delivery is of course a
factor, but they also expect to be kept informed with accurate times when the
delivery and/or fitting will occur.
dispatched immediately we make use of a national distribution service.
Managing supply chains is a core part of Burmatex’s activities and we use local
suppliers wherever possible to minimise our carbon footprint.'
Cormar, meanwhile, runs its own fleet of vehicles for a number of reasons, said
managing director David Judge: 'Customers are more demanding, not just of
product quality but also of service. Making a sale in an already tough market is
hard but a quick and reliable delivery service could mean the difference
between winning or losing the transaction.
This is when an efficient distribution system pays dividends, allowing the
retailer to make accurate appointments with their customers and maintain a
positive relationship. The UK flooring sector has seen considerable
improvement in its distribution activities in recent years, to the benefit of
everyone concerned.
While some manufacturers run their own delivery fleet, others use carriers
such as Transfloor. Steve Makin, the company's transport manager, said: 'With
the market becoming increasingly tough, manufacturers and wholesalers face a
difficult balancing act to control distribution costs whilst maintaining the
service levels which are so crucial to retailers. The key to successful
distribution is investment, as we have proved with Transfloor.
'We invested heavily to ensure that it had the quality and strength of fleet to be
able to deliver to the entire UK, regardless of how remote the location.'
The company recently opened its second distribution centre in Colchester,
complementing its Blackburn facility, to improve deliveries to the south of
England.
Cormar’s reliable delivery service wins sales.
'Our transport service is now an integral part of the Cormar service and we
continue to invest in it. One of our key differentiating factors is the 'on-time'
delivery – the delivery date stated at point of order – which is one way we add
value to our retailers. We also continuously review our operations to reduce
operating costs and run the fleet efficiently by using the latest in technology.'
The company has found that an efficient, nationwide delivery service has helped
to endorse its reputation as a reliable supplier to independent retailers. The
decision to make door-to-door deliveries was made over 30 years ago and the
operation now includes 10 outbases, in addition to its central facility in Bury,
resulting in an average turnaround service of 48 hours to customers around
the UK.
Axminster is another manufacturer that runs its own delivery fleet to provide
dependable commitment to its customers, said Steve Upperton, sales director.
'Some of our trucks are so well cared for and meticulously maintained that
they regularly win awards at truck festivals and some have even covered an
amazing 750,000 miles and are still going strong,' he continued.
Transfloor is expanding to control distribution costs for its customers.
'We can maintain twice weekly deliveries even in these difficult times, as a
result of carrying for several large manufacturers, including Cavalier Carpets
and Ulster Carpets, and as a result the service is fast becoming the first stop
for British and European carpet suppliers looking for a reliable and quality
distribution service,' Makin continued. 'Run by professionals who know the
business inside out and with the facilities to provide exceptional service,
Transfloor dispels the myth that high standards are only obtained by vertical
integration. Stringent quality control and an ethic that focuses around
trained delivery operators, ensures that each carpet arrives on time and in
perfect condition.'
'Retailers can almost set their clock by our weekly deliveries, knowing their
orders will turn up on the same day, time after time. This is great comfort for
those retailers that pride themselves on customer satisfaction as they can
confidently arrange fitting without disappointment.
'Also, given that retailers know their Axminster Carpets driver and vice versa,
there are no enquiring telephone calls and trucks unable to find the shop – even
in the trickiest of locations – just the right carpet turning up at the right time.
'With many drivers and retailers on first name terms, our distribution service is
far more than just delivering carpet, it is about maintaining the high standard of
supplier/retailer relationship that Axminster Carpets is renowned for.'
Burmatex uses both its own delivery and that of a carrier for environmental
reasons. Becky Peters, Brand Manager, explained: 'The environmental issues
surrounding logistics are a growing concern for Burmatex and we have strict
company policies already in place, and regularly complete environmental
transport audits. As a UK based manufacturer, the distribution of our products
is handled centrally from our head office in West Yorkshire.
'We ensure deliveries are extremely efficient by scheduling each trip to
incorporate several orders.Where individual orders are required to be

Striata, subtler than a stripe
Axminster Carpets has taken inspiration from the 15th Century
and turned it into a piece of modernity with its latest creation,
Salcombe Striata.
Unveiled to interested visitors at the National Floor Show,
Salcombe Striata is beautifully made from Axminster Carpets’
unique 100% pure new wool Home Spun Yarn, and takes its
motivation from early 15th Century dyeing techniques where
uniform colours were difficult to replicate. The result is a patterned
carpet that has a distinctly contemporary feel.
Following the trend for linear patterns in the home, Salcombe
Striata introduces a broken stripe effect that bears a similarity to
striations in sedimentary rock formations. The finished article is far
subtler than a traditional stripe and the simple colour combinations co-ordinate well
with a variety of contemporary colours from the recently refreshed Devonia Plains
collection. As part of the Axminster Co-Ordinates collection, Salcombe Striata
allows homeowners to introduce patterned carpet in certain rooms without
affecting the overall unity of the interior.
A woven Axminster rated for Heavy Domestic use, Salcombe Striata provides an
ideal solution for busy homes looking for the quality and durability synonymous with
the Axminster Carpets name.
Richard Lawrence, Marketing Manager comments: “Pattern is having increasing
influence within the home and many consumers are now returning bolder carpet
styles to their interior. Salcombe Striata offers a subtle step into pattern that
captures the popularity of stripes, but which still provides a unifying colour with
hints of different tones rather than stark contrasts.”

Interfloor educates on underlay
A new 16-page booklet from Interfloor will help retailers train their staff to
better understand and sell the benefits of new underlay to their customers. For
with less than half of carpet consumers buying a new underlay, there’s a big
untapped sales and profit opportunity.
The booklet contains findings of research showing why consumers buy underlay
and importantly why they don’t! Underfoot comfort and carpet durability are
the main reasons for buying followed by noise and heat insulation and finally
enhancing carpet appearance.
Of the 51 per cent of consumers who don’t buy new carpet underlay the top
reason they give is because they want to use their old underlay. Other reasons
include not feeling underlay was necessary, buying a carpet with a secondary
backing, nobody suggested new underlay, too expensive, mistakenly believing
underlay doesn’t make carpet better and using the old carpet as underlay!
The training booklet, available to retailers, counters these consumer objections
with positive responses and explains how to use point of sale to sell more, and
better underlay. “It is important staff understand their customer’s needs and ‘sell’
the benefits of new underlay to match these needs,” said Interfloor marketing
director Steve Woodhead.
The new booklet called ‘How to sell more underlay and make your customers
happy’ shows retail sales professionals how to define the consumers’ needs for
a range of underlay products throughout the home. It illustrates how point of
sale can be used to convey underlay benefits in the store and advises how best
to use the marketing tools that Interfloor offers.

Emma wins hamper in British Wool NFS draw
The lucky winner of the BWMB National Floor Show luxury food hamper
prize draw is Emma Sharpe of Flooring by Henton in Sleaford, Lincolnshire,
who visited the NFS for the first time this year.
Emma, is a bright young newcomer to the flooring industry having previously
finished a drama course and then spent time holding drama workshops in
schools locally. But she was eventually drawn into the world of flooring by
her father, Richard, who owns the business.
“I have lived and breathed carpets since I was knee-high, as my Dad often
talked about work things at home and would always look closely at the carpet
when we went anywhere, so I know more than an average flooring sales
beginner.” Emma explained.
After talking to her for a while, it was clear that she certainly knew her
market and her customer and she felt that her drama skills could be very
useful in sales. “I can smile and be friendly with the most difficult customer
because of my training” she proudly explained.
The shop set up by her father has been in the current position for the last
three years and offers a good range of wool carpet with the Cormar ranges
selling the best –“Value and quality is vital at the moment and the £25-£30
per sq m range is probably the most people are spending at the moment.”
The shop manager, James Scott admitted that it had been a very tough year –
“Very slow trade, even on Saturdays and people are shopping around more
and then expecting us to match prices against poorer quality wool carpet.
People simply don’t understand the price is a reflection of the quality of the
product. ”
Richard Sharpe (Shop owner), Emma Sharpe (winner) and shop manager
James Scott of Flooring by Henton in Sleaford.
Adam adds new shades to stripes
Sleaford has eight flooring shops, so competition is fierce but she maintains
there is respect and friendly co-operation when they need some help.
In terms of keeping the business coming through the door, they are running a
local advertising campaign and have invested in signwriting for their vehicles
which Emma considers has been a really good move plus clearer directional
signing from the main road has helped people find them on their trading
estate base.
“Reputation is very important in Sleaford, we ensure our fitters arrive on
time, are smart in appearance, neat with their work and, tidy up after
themselves. High standards of service pay dividends for repeat business and
word of mouth trade.”
“We are a small team, just the three of us but it is really nice working in a
family business, we help each other and the flooring industry is great. I really
enjoy my job and I intend to stick with it.”

perfect solution for soft contract work, Lano Carpets has lifted the lid on
Sapphire IB.
Ideal for use in care and residential homes, Sapphire IB features Lano
Carpet’s improved impervious backing, hence IB, which prevents damage
to the carpet and subfloor after prolonged exposure to moisture.
Lano Carpets has also ensured that the face fibre is up to the task
presented by soft contract work by utilising a solution dyed yarn. The
pigment of each of Sapphire IB’s eight colours is part of the fibre itself
giving the 100% polypropylene yarn excellent resistance to harsh
cleaning chemicals and preventing fading in exposure to prolonged
periods of sunlight.
With shades ranging from coral through to midnight, slate and ash,
Sapphire IB brings retailers and contractors colours that have a proven
track record within soft contract locations. Combined with a graphic

Vacuum is a ‘breeze’
Bissell’s AromaPro upright deep cleaner has been awarded a Which? Magazine
Best Buy accolade in the publication’s recent carpet cleaner test.
Scoring ahead of competitor products, Bissell’s appliance was commended for
its ‘several helpful features that make carpet cleaning a breeze’. Features like its
built-in heater, handheld powerbrush attachment that the magazine said ‘makes
cleaning upholstery easier’.
The originator of deep cleaning also notched up a further Best Buy for its

Carpet recyclers need to identify the pile fibres in order to find the
best value for materials recovered from them. Carpet Recycling UK
have engaged with the two major US manufacturers of near infrared identification ( NIR ) technology to solve the problem for UK
recyclers.
The use of hand held NIR instruments is already well established in
the growing US carpet recycling industry with these instruments
calibrated to handle typical carpets which are mainly 100% of one
fibre type. In the UK market pile fibre blends particularly with wool
are well established and therefore instruments had to be modified
to meet UK needs.
NIR analysers from Axsun Technologies and Polychromix are now
available with the capability to identify the majority of UK blends.
These are battery operated portable hand held devices which are
quick and easy to use in a carpet sorting operation.
Both of these devices can also be ordered with textile and plastic
identification libraries so that the recycler can use them across a
wide range of material streams.

Iceland aisle in style
Ryalux continues to grow its European market in 2008, this time
helping newly weds in Iceland make their trip up the aisle in style.
The Yorkshire based company has supplied the Útskálakirkja
Church in Útskálum near Reykjavik, with carpet from its V&A
Period Velvet collection in Olivia, stretching from the entrance
of the church up to the altar.
Ryalux’s V&A Period Velvet is one of the few high quality velvet
finish ranges manufactured in the UK today. The exclusive
collection has been developed in conjunction with the Victoria
& Albert Museum in London, taking its inspiration from the
museum’s exhibitions. It is crafted from 80 per cent New
Zealand Wool blended with 20 per cent polyamide fibres
which is then treated with Scotchgard™ carpet protector to
ensure that the finished product is resistant to spills and soiling.
This makes it ideal for use in high traffic areas.
Peter Allan, business manager for international sales at
Burmatex & Ryalux said: “As well as increasing our sales
overseas, it’s a nice feeling to know that newly weds in Iceland
will be taking their first steps as a married couple on one of
our carpets.
“The V&A Period Velvet range has been created with high
end, design led applications in mind, be it the flagship stores
of famous fashion brands, luxury hotels, or, as in this example,
applications where the style and feel of the carpet are vital.
We are now seeing the range being deployed in high profile
applications all over the world, such as the Gucci Store in
Kuwait, and will continue to work with our customers to
offer a wide range of quality carpets, in any width they
require, reducing waste, avoiding seams and ultimately saving
them money.”

Durable foam is blue - and green
Dow Building Solutions has announced the UK launch of Floormate 300-A, a new blue extruded
polystyrene foam insulation board made with naturally occurring CO2. The new product – created
from leading insulation material, Styrocam® - has been designed for use in floors across the spectrum
from residential to commercial buildings. Along with low water absorption, ease of installation and
excellent insulating properties, the new material also has a high design load along with durability,
which is particularly important to specifiers looking for proven long term performance.
Floormate 300-A has a nominal compressive strength of 300 kN/m2, and a design load (the load
which will give maximum compression of 2% over 50 years) of 130 kN/m2. Declaring the design load
allows specification against the long term requirements of a building’s floor, as well as built in safety
margins.
“Failure of a floor can be incredibly expensive, due to the interruption of business and cost of repair,
for any building irrespective of its use,” said Conrad Newberry,Technical Manager for Dow Building
Solutions (pictured above). “In particular, floors in environments such as busy retail outlets and
offices must be capable of withstanding anticipated loads – and they must also be able to maintain
that performance over a building’s lifespan, making durability key.”
Dow manufactures Floormate 300-A using naturally occurring CO2 as a blowing agent to create its
famous blue extruded polystyrene foam – thus there is no additional emission to the atmosphere
which would contribute to climate change.

Burmatex designers hold court
Burmatex, has unveiled its stunning new design hub following a period of intense
change. The former squash courts are now unrecognisable, sporting a design studio,
boardroom and showrooms for both contract and residential brands –
demonstrating that its design team’s creativity really has no limits.
The unused squash courts at the Airea plc head office were completely transformed
with the installation of a mezzanine floor, providing 320m2 of useable space. This ‘hub’
is now home to Burmatex’s design and marketing team, comprising a design studio
and commercial showroom centring on new product development, a state of the art
meeting room boasting cutting-edge media technology, and a beautiful residential
showroom to demonstrate Airea plc’s domestic offering, Ryalux, in situ.
Darren Clanford, creative director at Airea plc, said: “The design hub’s purpose is two
fold; not only is it the perfect environment to receive clients, it is where all our new
collections are conceptualised, developed and showcased. At the moment, for
example, the corridor running through the rooms is trialling phase two of our latest collection, Evolve. The remaining
flooring scheme comprises products from the current Evolve collection, combining Evolve Skyline – a contemporary
product inspired by city architecture and geometry – with Anyway Urban, a sophisticated tonally linear product with
bright contemporary highlights. Both products can be fitted broadloom, tessellated or random lay, which gives the
collection flexibility and reflects the modern interior design requirements for today’s working environments.”
The best design processes are centred around not only the creation of an impactful space, but the way in which spaces
are used. Burmatex has been instrumental in proving that, today, floors can add a focal point to a room or harmonize
seamlessly with an existing interior scheme. Its new meeting room, for instance, is the perfect example of how different
colours and textures work together, employing Axis, a dense twist carpet tile that brings a contemporary slant to a classic
style in lime, to complement a statement walnut boardroom table. Darren concludes: “It’s interesting that when we had
completed the first stage of the design hub, namely the office and the design studio, it felt revolutionary. But now that the
second stage of the boardroom and residential showroom is complete, we’re itching to update the office. It shows how
committed we are to developing brands built on innovation.”

Novostrat makes a name for itself
At the beginning of 2008 it would be fair to say that most people would have said “Novostrat –Who?”
Although Novostrat was already the largest manufacturer of polyethylene foam in Ireland, to their
recent target sector, i.e wood and laminate floor underlays, they were positively embryonic. How
things change. After a year of major brand building, Novostrat is right there, winner of the best
Underlay 2008 at this year’s FloorStyle exhibition, sporting a range of 8 laminate floor underlays and
two carpet underlays, and now with a network of distributors and retailers across Ireland and the UK,
Novostrat is being recognised and respected. Novostrat is building its brand on a series of distinct
selling points which separate them from the competition. A low tog rating, which makes the range
ideal for underfloor heating applications, a low physical weight, which makes them ideal for storage,
carrying and installing, high acoustic insulation, with ‘Sonic Gold’ achieving a 0.22 dB rating….. but most
of all, very competitive pricing for a very high performance product.
Novostrat underlays are made using polyethelyne foam with a variety of foil and membrane
laminations – as such they are fully recyclable, they achieve a Class 0 fire rating and the manufacturing
process neither produces nor uses any harmful HCFC’s, heavy metals, chlorides or bromides. These
very green credentials are finding favour with Local Authorities and environmentally aware developers
who are now insisting on ‘Green’ products. Novostrat High Performance Underlays are not being sold
directly to the consumer.

Flooring sector set for sell-offs
A new report suggests that as the effects of the wider economy reaches the UK floor coverings market, a series of takeovers and sell offs will sweep the
market. The report, by leading industry analysts Plimsoll Publishing, has found that a combination of needs is forcing smaller companies to consider selling to their
larger rivals and larger players are looking to buy their smaller rivals to diversify and develop their businesses.
David Pattison, senior analyst at Plimsoll, has a clear view on this: “It has a great deal to do with necessity. Many of the larger players in the market, despite the
downturn, are desperate to find new ways to develop their business, but with the current climate, costs are being cut and business development is being
slashed. So they need options to help them protect their futures and tap into exiting revenue and profit streams. Financing a series of small acquisitions at key
niche players in the market will give them two clear benefits:
• A quick route to increasing sales for relevantly low cost
• A foothold in the emerging sectors of the market
The facts are very clear:
• For the last few years, the larger companies have been surviving on
wafer thin margins, most only making 2.1% or less
• 100 of the UK’s top 1000 players are actually losing money at the
moment. This is evidence that their strategy of chasing sales and
volume compromises profits.
Meanwhile at the other end of the market, an emerging group 231
companies, are smaller, high focused players. These fast-growing
companies have been able to carve out niche markets for themselves,
some with premium profit margins. The best examples of these
companies are:
• Reporting sales increases of well over 18.8% per year
• Reporting margins of 5.7%
However, despite the excellent returns there now seems to be an
eagerness to sell from many of the owners. Several factors are at play
here: a combination of their businesses now reaching a critical point in
their development, twinned with the tightening of credit and a reluctance
of the money markets to finance the next phase of development. In
today’s market, selling their business makes sense for two clear reasons:.
• Brings the chance of stability and security to protect the business
• Accelerates the development of the company due to extra resources
David Pattison comments on these smaller companies seeking buyers:
“It would be a pity if some of these exceptional businesses went to the
wall, or do not get the maximum chance to prosper just through lack of
funding.”

UK businesses hold steady despite
economic turbulence
Leading business information provider, Equifax, has released its latest Business
Failures Report. Not surprisingly, there are increases in the number of
businesses going bust in some sectors, but the overall picture for the year to
date suggests that other sectors are faring better.
The worst hit was the manufacturing sector, which saw a 13.8% increase in the
number of businesses failing in Quarter 3, compared to Quarter 1.
However, the services and wholesale sectors both saw failures drop by 4.2%
and 2.6% respectively in Quarter 3, compared to the beginning of the year.
“Whilst there is clearly immense pressure on businesses with increased costs
all-round, it appears that some sectors have been taking the right precautions
to manage cashflow and avoid the risk of bad debt and this is enabling them to
stay solvent”, confirmed Neil Munroe, External Affairs Director, Equifax.
The construction and transport & communications industries continued to
struggle in the difficult financial climate with failures up 11.7% and 11.9% in
Quarter 3, compared to the first Quarter of 2008. “Although there are
increases in these sectors, the trend through this year is pretty steady”,
continued Neil Munroe. “And significantly, failures in the Retail sector only
increased by 2.8% in Quarter 3 compared to Quarter 1.
“Indeed, the overall increase across all sectors for Quarter 3 is just 3.2%
compared to the beginning of the year, but the 0.5% cut in interest rates will be
a welcome lifeline for businesses in all sectors as the conditions remain tough.”

Harrogate Review
A co-ordinated attack on
the consumer
The sneaking suspicion that two thirds of the colour palette is there just to
make the wall racks look good has been prevalent for the last two or three
years at Harrogate. But now the flooring business is definitely getting brighter.
And that’s brighter in the sense of smarter – not just more colourful.
OK, the bulk is still beige. The safe naturals grow and grow with added
environmental credentials. Heathering and berbering abound.
The stronger colours have had a better run in recent times with rich reds and
browns, sophisticated taupe and black combinations making a good impact.
But most noticeable at Harrogate was the more intelligent use of colour –
more subtle shading, more contemporary pastels, more acceptable stripes
and, above all, the combination of all of these into attractive, co-ordinated
collections.
Co-ordination is probably the single most important trend that came to the
fore on the floors of Harrogate and many design hours had clearly been
used to deliver options that were well thought out and, most importantly,
highly sellable.
Concluding our reports from the
National Floor Show at Harrogate with
an analysis of design and colour trends
continued overleaf
Victoria’s marketing people Martine Hirrel
(left) and Claire Gough.
Victoria’s stand was alive
with exciting new products,
none more so than that
carpeting the stand which
was one of the most original
new products seen at the
show – City Living. This
carpet is an all-wool tufted
cut and loop but it’s difficult
to describe the geometric
stripey multi-level texture
that the designers have
created in 12 colourways. It’s
the ideal answer to the
customer’s ‘I’m looking for
something different’
comment but you’ll have to
see a sample to see why!
Other newcomers were the
coordinating all-wool Berber
Stripe and Berber Ridge, the
subtle heather tones of the
80/10/10 Kelso, the top-end
choice of 60 oz Regal Twist
and a re-coloured Tudor
Manor.
Stewart Martin, Axminster’s Group Sales Manager, sums up the
company’s attitude: ‘Let’s go for it’. Their policy in a tight market is to keep
moving ahead strongly with a stream of new launches and colourways to
give retailers more to talk about. As a result, Harrogate saw lots that was
new including the stunning new natural tones of Royal Clovelly and
intricate, delicate floral designs of Torbay Persian Lace. Strong-selling
Devonia Plains showed off a new palette with four new plains colours and
eight new heathers – and a total choice of 60 hues! A star of the show
was the coordinated collection of Moorland carpets in 3 colourways – a
twist, a tweed and a woven (pictured). ‘The options we can now offer are
huge’, says Stewart.

Harrogate Review
And the commerciality of co-ordinates is all important –
they sell on aesthetic appeal anyhow but there is that extra
opportunity to roll a sale from one room to the next, the
really give salesman a story to tell and a reason to trade up.
The Show had some fine examples of the art from leading
manufacturers. In some cases, the co-ordinated range had been
created from one original design process – in others, ranges had
been added or combined from existing ranges to make a coordinated collection.
Lano are looking good with excellent presentation of their well-thought-out ranges and
Harrogate provided brisk business for the company. The new Ultimo Collection has just been
launched in France and Germany but has acquired new wool ranges for a UK market focus.
Ultimo includes some existing Lano products with new and re-coloured ranges. All new at
Harrogate was the 34oz velvet Wooltouch, a successful re-vamp of Lano’s Mayfield product and
a luxury 80/20 3-ply Pure Indulgence – a non-traditional axminster with highly attractive
modern designs.
Axminster leverage the breadth of their capability for plains, tufted
and axminsters in a co-ordinated collection called Moorland that
offers flexible options across three colourways. ‘We have seen
those trends in fabrics and wallpapers and wanted to see what
we could do with existing ranges. This is a good way forward for
us,’ said Group Sales Manager Stewart Martin.
But for pure class, the co-ordinates prize may have to go to
Ulster whose launch of the Country House Collection at
Harrogate after two years in the making was a joy to behold.
Three styles – a contemporary floral design (Melrose),
a plaid (Beaumont) and an antique Persian (Kazan), which
is also available in a co-ordinating runner, share the same
colour palette.
One of the smartest co-ordinates on show was Brockway’s
Vogue collection – a high quality 2-ply twist with five plains in
each colourset and a matching stripe with all of those
colours also available in a running. ‘We’ve had an excellent
response to this approach,’ said Brockway’s Charles Annable.
The NICF has undergone a number of changes since Phil Poser (right) took over as President last
year. ‘We have an excellent team, a new structure and a good opportunity to develop,’ says Phil.
‘We’re changing our strategy to create a demand from consumers to have their carpet fitted by a
qualified fitter.’ NICF are working hard to communicate the benefits of membership and promote the
value of training through the Institute’s facilities in Loughborough and Nelson. ‘Training can put a fitter
six months ahead of his peers. We have some excellent young people coming up,’ he said – and
there’s a training trend back towards carpets, it is noted. Pictured above (left to right) is Helen
Tidmarsh, Steve Ramsden and president Phil Poser.

November 2008
Victoria are new to co-ordinates but presented a highly
commercial tufted loop collection of eight plains and four
stripes with some strong colours in their Berber
Stripe/Berber Ridge range.
Ulster Carpets made a serious
impact on the show with the launch
of their sumptuous new Country
House Collection – a 9-shot 80/20
woven axminster which will be
available to the market in January.
The collection, presented at Harrogate
in a lifestyle inspired display with
stunning roomset photography, is
conceived in three beautiful styles:
Kazan – an ornate traditional design
in rich dark colours with a vintage
Persian feel in seven colours; Melrose,
a contemporary fresh floral design in
10 modern colourways; and
Beaumont, a plaid available in
four colours. Each design is
distinctively different but have all been
created from a complementary colour
palette resulting in a versatile
collection of stand-alone products
or co-ordinating designs.
Telenzo’s Zodiac offers a different approach with a strip,
a spot and a square – three designs in seven colourways
while on Georgian’s stand, the Stoddard’s brand was
offering an up-market option of six stripes and five
plains.
Stripes are having a good run in the market and
what may have seemed something of a fad two or
three years ago has now achieved an established
place in the market as consumers appreciate just
how practical a striped carpet can be in addition
to its designer appearance.
Apart from some of the co-ordinated options
already mentioned, Edel Telenzo’s Tube collection
is particular worthy of note as is the Rock n’ Roll
collection of Alternative Flooring that make its
highly attractive (and award-winning) debut at the
show.
In terms of the colour palette overall, softer,
warmer shades are empahasised such as in
Contemporary Life’s new Elementas velvets.
Kingsmead continue to be ‘colour-active’ in their
FlooringNews
approach and are expecting greys, aqua greens and mushroom to do well in the
forthcoming season along with damson for the more adventurous.
Heathers are getting a little more fleck with good examples at Kingsmead and
Cormar have great expectations of their Primo Tweeds ranged launched in the
Summer.
There were so many rugs at Harrogate this year that it would be difficult
to identify a dominant design trends as everyone is offering the widest
choice but innovations in texture and multi-height yarns is creating some
interesting options.
In wood floors, oak is still a UK firm favourite but some of the whiter bleached
finishes are doing well.
In the smooths department, some of the more interesting offers include
Balterio’s shiny Magnitude laminates with metallic sheen [CHECK] and the
lizard-like vinyl from [CHECK] on the Halls Flooring stand floor. And if you
thought you’d seen it all, check out the High-Definition collection of Bonar’s new
Flotex and the high-tech white Grid design that the Rubber Flooring won
awards with at the show.
Overall, flooring design is looking brighter and smarter than ever. Let’s hope
consumer enthusiasm can respond to the excellent design work going on in
the industry.
Edel Telenzo has an intelligent approach to the market, constantly monitoring consumer trends
and tailoring their response with keen focus. The smart new feel about the company was reflected in
the new contemporary stand design, carpeted with the highly popular Tube stripes carpet. New for
the show was the Zodiac, a clever co-ordinating contract range that provides a strip, a spot and
square in seven colourways and there was also a makover of the ‘London’ range with a re-colouring of
Greenwich and Henley and a new stripey Windsor to complement them.

Hall’s Floorings arrived at their first Harrogate in considerable style with an attractive
and highly professional presentation of the extensive range of floorcoverings and point-of-sale
support that they supply to independent retailers. The company emphasises that ‘you are our
only customer’ in its total focus on independents and cite many retailers who take the entire
Hall’s branded product range to furnish their stores for a mid/upper quality profile. Ranges are
highly contemporary such as 80/20 structured loop natural berbers, a new style-theme vinyl
lectern and innovative products from Gerflor include matt textured wood-look Senso vinyl and
versatile textile backed vinyls.

Harrogate Review
It’s only Rock n’ Roll but they liked it – the new stripes range from Alternative Flooring
attracted lots of attention and won the show’s top smaller stand award for the innovative
display. Lorna Haigh, Marketing Manager said," We are delighted to receive this award –
we felt our stand was simple but showcased our products in a fun way with our new Rock
‘n’ Roll stripes taking centre stage alongside a very rock 'n' roll Harley Davidson!’ Each of
the six colourways is named after a rock n’ roll classic – Brown Sugar, Layla, Roxanne – and
in a nice bit of attention to detail, each product code is the year the song was recorded (to
put you out of your misery that’s 1971, 1973 and 1978 respectively).
Heckmondwike have perfected the art of playing to their strengths by making a good
product better. At Harrogate, the Yorkshire-based manufacturer adorned the floor with their
Momentum range (shown above) - a new version of their 2-layer fibre-bonded carpet that
punches a criss-cross pattern through to the surface for a more aesthetic appearance.
The product joins Montage - a version with a dot pattern - and other solid performers in rib,
cobble and velour options including Supacord. Heckmondwike have specialised in the
education sector and is a popular specification for the Government’s massive “Building
Schools for the Future” programme that aims to renovate or re-build every school in the UK.
Commercial contracts are also undertaken. “Momentum adds to the range to give us a
complete solution across the needs of different areas in an installation,” says
Heckmondwike’s Abby Chandler. “Harrogate was a very postive event for us this year with a
good quality of enquiries,” she said.

The Balterio product range has
continued to evolve with innovation
and the company’s new Magnitude
range was on show with reflective
‘Chromo Zone’ texturing to ‘outshine
real wood’ and now with an
extended range of 8 decors –
doubled since its debut at Domotex
in January. The reflective radiance of
this product is displayed to greatest
effect with a new point-of-sale system
that includes in-built lighting. Also with
an extended colour range is a
Balterio best-seller Tradition Sapphire
– the ultra realistic vinyl with a handscraped wood-touch feel and a
unique v-groove milled in a random
way to give it the most natural look –
also with a new compact totem POS
display. ‘We had very positive
feedback to these products at the
show’, said Balterio’s Franky Terrijn. ‘If
people are spending money, they are
spending it on quality’, he said.
Asiatic were all shiny at Harrogate with the launch of their
Metallica range of 100% polyester carpets in gold (pictured above),
silver and gun-metal grey with the high-lustre look growing in appeal.
The company also launched its new textures catalogue - “Texture is
very big right now,” says Asiatic’s Jeremy Nichols. “We are seeing
strong interest in flat yarns, bobble yarns and high shine materials.”
The popular gun-tufted Matrix wool range has also been
re-launched with 52 new designs in six sizes.

Polyflor came to Harrogate with
innovation across their range –
showcasing three new safety floors
under the Polysafe brand – Mosaic
and Wood FX/FX Acoustic – a new
breed of design-led non-slip contract
flooring solutions. Also showing for the
first time is the company’s radical restyle of the top-selling Kudos PU
range of luxury vinyl tiles (pictured).
Kudos has introduced 13
dramatically different stone, marble
and wood effects in a total choice of
20 design options.The new range
also features a variety of new surface
embosses specially developed to
enhance the natural appearance of
the decoration. The collection includes
coloured feature strips, with standard
borders, corners, classic compass
designs and bespoke designs and
also features a specially formulated
polyurethane surface treatment
which improves the soil resistance
and cleanability of the floor, reducing
maintenance costs by up to 24%.
This September carpet moved off the floor and onto billboards with the launch of Fun on the
Floor’s outdoor advertising; part of a major integrated marketing campaign to get the nation
embracing the positive attributes of carpet. The outdoor campaign follows a successful launch of
the www.funonthefloor.com website, where over 7,000 retailers are now featured, and further
supported with a press insertion within homes and interiors magazines as well as heavyweight
print advertising campaign across national style and interiors-focused titles. Coinciding with the
National Floor Show, the distinctive ‘naked carpet’ creative was splashed across poster sites and
vans throughout the UK.
from The Stocklists
The Estimators were attending Harrogate for the tenth time and continue to introduce
more improvements to their successful carpet estimator and planning software. The result
was a busy show as fitters found out how the system can save money and take out the
margin of error. ‘Lots of experienced fitters find the system comes up with ever more
efficient ways of doing it they may not have thought of – especially on bigger and more
complex installations,’ says Dan Bloor. ‘And, of course, less experienced fitters and sales staff
gain instant expertise.’ The upgrades include new floor plan visualisation for consumers and
PDF creation for emailing. The Estimators also launched their new system for specialist floors
such as vinyl, wood, laminates and tiles.
Fun on the Floor is a generic campaign backed by a collective of carpet manufacturers,
distributors and retailers and encompassing outdoor, print, web, and PR. With £7 million
investment planned over 3 years the activity will remind consumers of carpet’s versatility,
practicality, affordability and ability to transform a home. The collective includes Lord Harris of
Peckham (Carpetright), Marcus Billman (Balta Group), Neville Cormack O.B.E. (Cormar Carpets)
and Robin Wright, CEO of WCRS - who were photographed celebrating the launch at a dinner in
Harrogate after the show.

Karastan’s quality on display
The Mohawk Group has introduced a new point-of-sale unit designed to show
consumers the full potential of the Karastan range of high-end residential floorcoverings.
Capturing the stunning textures and patterns available throughout the Karastan range,
the point-of-sale unit can display up to 90 samples in a 13.5 x 18” format of Karastan’s
wool and wool-rich carpets. With such a variety of styles on offer, the unit allows
retailers to show the depth of Karastan ranges to their customer base.
The display stand enforces the high-end residential nature of carpets from Karastan and
with a small footprint, it also takes up minimal space in store.
“We are aware that for many retailers, Karastan will appeal to a niche but important
proportion of their customers and so we wanted to ensure that the display stand
reflected this,” comments Howard Lindsay,The Mohawk Group.
“Karastan is a luxury product and it is important that consumers immediately relate the
stand with quality and style, so we have introduced some strong lifestyle photography
and branding to ensure this occurs. However, we also wanted to make sure that the
Karastan unit could also be flexible within store, allowing retailers to change their floor
space at will and promoting the benefits of good in-store design. Hence, the Karastan
display stand is easy to move, giving retailers exactly this.”
The Karastan display unit is available to retailers under a rebate scheme which ensures
that successful Karastan stockists will not only benefit from an excellent range of
carpets, but also a comprehensive sales support package, which is only partially
represented by the stand.

RugMark UK has announced
the winners of its ethical rug
design competition. This is
the first year for the
competition, which aims to
raise awareness about the
ethics of rug manufacturing
amongst design students
and interior designers.
The competition was open
to students registered at
universities in the UK and
Ireland, and was won by Ruchi Goyal, an MA student at
Nottingham Trent University. Her prize was a trip to Kathmandu
to see her rug being hand knotted by skilled artisans.
New head for heuga
The new Managing Director of modular flooring specialist, FLOR by heuga, is René
Nieuwendijk (pictured). Fifteen years of experience as International Marketing
Manager with Leolux, a contemporary furniture manufacturer in The Netherlands,
will stand him in good stead for the exciting role at FLOR by heuga.
He comments "I am proud to have been accepted to take over the role following
on from such a great ambassador, Patrick Riley (now in Asia Pacific for
InterfaceFLOR). The consumer brand has undergone a transformation in the last
couple of years; I am pleased to have the opportunity to contribute further to the
development of FLOR by heuga through closer collaboration with our retailers."
René's appointment comes at an exciting time for the long-established heuga name.
2008 saw the launch of a high profile, three-year consumer marketing campaign,
which focuses predominantly on the infinite design possibilities of the carpet tile.

“The best thing about my trip to Kathmandu was when I entered
the workshop and saw my rug on the loom” says Ruchi aged 27
“The most important and wonderful thing that RugMark does is to
take children out of the rug factories and give them the safe and
healthy environment that a child needs. It helps them with their
schooling and development when their families can't afford it.”
Samantha Towle, Director of RugMark UK was delighted with the
high quality of designs submitted, but said that “the challenge for
RugMark is to make sure that all rugs imported to the UK from
South Asia carry the RugMark label.”
Financial assistance for this competition was received from the

DOMOTEX preview
UK urged to be more export aware
UK manufacturers have been urged to be less cautious about exporting as
British representation at the world’s top trade fair for flooring has fallen.
The spectacular Domotex show in Hannover this January is expecting growth
for the 2009 event but only about 30 of its 1,350 exhibitors will be British – in
2008 it was nearer 40 companies.
“The UK is still cautious about exporting and too inward-looking,” said Ivan
Dekeyser, International Sales Director at Burmatex and Ryalux.
“Exporting isn’t easy but it’s easier than it was and there are great
opportunities for British manufacturers abroad if you are prepared to be in it
for the long term. We’d love there to be more UK companies at Domotex,”
he said.
In addition to Burmatex/Ryalux, the UK contingent includes flagship carpet
companies such as Asiatic, Rama,Westex and Wilton and underlay and ancillary
suppliers such as Ball & Young, Carpenter, F. Ball and Bonar Yarns. The British Wool
Marketing Board and the British Wool Textile Export organisation also wave the flag.
And there’s a GB squad in the European Team Floor Laying Competition – with
The Stocklists as one of the sponsors.
Speaking at a Domotex preview event in London, Ivan added: “Domotex is a
fantastic show that is totally focussed on flooring – no interiors. All the main
players do attend and we find our customers want to come.
“It’s a great platform of capability to show people what you can do and, of
course, it’s a great chance to see what everybody else is up to and what the
trends are,” he said.
Domotex attracted 47,000 visitors last January with 55% of those attending
from outside Germany and more than 80% of the exhibitors are not
German.
“The number of registered exhibitors is very encouraging given the current
difficulties being experienced by the flooring industry,” says Stepan Ph. Kuhne, a
board member of Domotex organisers Deutsche Messe AG. “During periods of
market weakness and volatility, companies need to seek new business leads,
follow new initiatives and improve their image. There is no better a place to do
this than Domotex.”
The Domotex event’s total focus on flooring has established the event as the
industry’s barometer of taste, trends and design with exhibitors making
maximum efforts to impress.
In addition to the trade stands, Domotex pulls together a whole program of
events including ‘contractworld’, the Carpet Design Awards and technical
presentations. This year there is a new health and safety initiative which will
focus on protecting fitters’ knees.
A major highlight, and worth the trip across the Channel in itself, is FloorForum
– a joint initiative by 30 carpet and rug manufacturers presided over by top
textile designer Ulf Moritz. This showcase of ‘carpet as art’ dominates Hall 3 and
the 2009 event will focus of texture and the tactile qualities of carpet.
For fans of hand-made carpets, the Loom Lounge in Hall 18 presents an
attractive environment to see the finest craftwork and alongside in Hall 17 will
be the world’s largest square Nain carpet – 400 square metres with 490,000
knots per square metre! It has taken six years to make.

Easy step up for quick fitters
Binding a stair runner and fitting a 13 step staircase, including half landing, in just 30
minutes proved to be a crowd puller at Harrogate Floor Show this year. Fitters and
retailers watched transfixed as Kelly Huddleston on the Stairrods (UK) stand applied
Easybind to a stair runner and then deftly fitted it up three steps, curved it
seamlessly around the half landing using the company’s new Easy Studs, and then up
the remaining ten steps.
Those fitters and retailers yet to switch to Easybind and Easy Studs were
particularly impressed with the neat bound corners and the strength of the binding,
whilst those already using Easybind came to pick up tips from Kelly and to see
Easy Studs in action for the first time.
Jamie Adamson of Stairrods (UK) reported that home owners are increasingly
choosing a contrasting Easybind colour to their carpet in order to create a
decorative feature on their stairs.
Easybind -is an attractive rope-styled edging, which is easy to apply and available in
23 colours. Runners and rugs can be made with Easybind at a customer’s home cut from any width or design of carpet and then immediately fitted.
Easy Studs are a smart and fast new method to fit stair runners around corners
onto a landing. Applied in conjunction with Easybind, the edging trim, Easy Studs
avoid the need for naplocks on corners resulting in a seamless, continuous stair
runner with an unbroken pattern flowing down the steps. Available in five metal
finishes, Easy Studs are decorative, highly functional and simple to use.

Primo retailer rolls out to Rome
Anniversary for carpet carers
Cormar Carpets, UK producer of Primo Easy Clean Carpet, has announced the lucky
winner of its ‘Weekend in Rome’ competition, conducted during the National Floor Show.
Born in 1991 at the International Wool Secretariat (IWS) which
recognised the need for an evaluation and approval system for carpet
maintenance products, the Woolsafe programme became The Woolsafe
Organisation in 1998, who ever since have been championing the
correct and proper care of carpets and rugs.
Shane Mapp from Carpetwise, in Stratford upon Avon, was the winning entry drawn by
Cormar chairman, Neville Cormack.
The free draw supported Cormar’s three easy care Primo ranges – Primo Plus, Primo
Saxony and Primo Tweeds – at
the Harrogate exhibition.
All three collections are
competitively priced – with
trade prices for cuts and rolls
under ten pounds. Retailers
were asked to fill in an entry
card and drop it into a
designated box on the
company’s stand.
Said David Cormack, marketing
director of Cormar Carpets:
“We wanted to run a
promotion alongside our new
Primo Collection offering, and
as Primo means ‘first’ in Italian,
where better than to send the
winner but to Rome! We had
over 150 entries and Shane was
picked. We hope he has a
fabulous time.”

Managed throughout this time by industry expert Paul Bakker, with
Dr Ágnes Zsednai guiding its technical direction,The Woolsafe
Organisation has grown beyond recognition to an international
organisation that has spearheaded many developments such as the
Registered Inspectors and Certified Operator networks, training courses,
commercial standards and technical information. But all share one
common goal – to ensure the correct and proper care of carpeting.
With correct care at the forefront of each and every development made
by The Woolsafe Organisation, its independent cleaning product testing
scheme epitomises just what the Organisation stands for – peace of
mind for cleaning professionals, carpet manufacturers, chemical suppliers,
carpet retailers and end-users. In fact, with the Woolsafe Approved
Certification Mark on containers, consumers and cleaning operatives
alike instantly know that they can safely and effectively treat any dirt, stain
or spillage without permanently damaging the floor covering.
The Woolsafe Approved Mark can be found on some of the most
popular domestic carpet care products, highlighting the success of the
scheme and underlining that cleaning chemical manufacturers and
consumers alike value the testing that guarantees the products are safe
for use on wool and wool-rich carpeting. In fact, on all textile floor coverings.
Fifty of the worlds largest manufacturers of professional carpet cleaning
chemicals are proud to carry the Woolsafe Mark on their products, knowing
that it is a widely recognised endorsement of both performance and safety.
