February 2015 University Heights Academy Academy Action UHA Wins Big at KYA The school seeks to provide educational opportunities that will allow every student to achieve to the best of his/her ability and to develop as a whole person. A group of five students attended the KYA Assembly in Louisville and earned every award possible for the UHA team! The KYA team includes delegates Chloe Cannon, Jonathan Kinnard, Eleonora Cincotti, Sherafghan Khan, and Chandler Unfried. Awards: Delegation of Excellence – Chloe Cannon, Eleonora Cincotti, Sherafghan Khan, Jonathan Kinnard, Chandler Unfried Supreme Court Case Winner – Judicial Team – Chloe Cannon, Sherafghan Khan, Jonathan Kinnard Outstanding Advocate Team – Chloe Cannon, Sherafghan Khan, Jonathan Kinnard Outstanding Advocate & Outstanding Advocate Case – Sherafghan Khan Selected for YMCA National Judicial Competition – Judicial Team- Chloe Cannon, Sherafghan Khan, Jonathan Kinnard Selected Supreme Court Justice 2015 – Jonathan Kinnard Selected Speaker of the House Chair at the Capital –Pro Tempore- Chandler Unfried UHA Food Drive UHA Student Council hosted a food drive, and the school collected 1,981 cans of food for Aaron McNeil House. This is just another great way UHA supports the community! Academy Action NHS Induction Ceremony The National Honor Society inducted its new members in a ceremony held in December. Students in grades 10-12 are required to have a 3.5 GPA or better in order to qualify for membership. After receiving their pins and certificates, students pledged to uphold the NHS ideals of Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. They were honored at a luncheon later that day. New members include: Sam Wilkins, RaAnna Tucker, Jacquise Smith, Amber Powell, Makenzie Miles, Logan Kirkman, Jonathan Kinnard, Sherafghan Khan, Damon Key, Jack Hancock, Garrett Gee, Gianna Fiscella, Samantha Eaton, Anna Eaton, Virginia Cincotti, Eleonora Cincotti. Sixth Grade Showcase In December, University Heights Academy hosted and participated in the Kentucky Colonels Sixth Grade Showcase. Out of seven schools in Region #5, UHA ranked 1st place in the overall competition and in Quick Recall. Individual awards included: Rohan Desai, 1st place in Math and Science Zohaib Iqbal, 2nd place in Science Elvin Wagner, 2nd place in Social Studies Beth Peebles, 4th place in Language Arts and Social Studies Page 2 February 2015 Middle School First Place District Win University Heights Academy’s middle school academic team competed in the District Governor’s Cup at Muhlenberg South Middle School on Saturday, January 17. They placed 1st overall. These are the individual results for UHA: Quick Recall—1st Place Social Studies—Roma Desai 1st and Noah Helphenstine 2nd Language Arts—Kevli Sheth 1st, Gabriella Lynn 2nd, and Lauren Shaner 4th Science—Jakob Moore 1st and Jackson Cotthoff 3rd Arts/Humanities—Vijdan Gill 2nd, Kevli Sheth 3rd, and Gabriella Lynn 5th Math—Roma Desai 5th Team members include: (Back Row) Lainey Burman, Vijdan Gill, Jackson Cotthoff, Kevli Sheth, Gabriella Lynn, Roma Desai, Mallory Rager, Noah Helphenstine; (Front Row) Lauren Shaner, Jakob Moore, Lily Hendricks, Ian Calvert, Rohon Desai. *State Qualifiers* Congratulations to the following UHA middle school students who qualified for the State Governor’s Cup Academic Competition based on their performance in the region competition: Roma Desai—1st place, Social Studies Kevli Sheth—3rd place, Language Arts and 4th place, Arts & Humanities Noah Helphenstine—5th place, Social Studies These students will compete in Louisville in March. Governor’s Cup Varsity Academic Team Meet In January, UHA varsity academic team hosted and competed in the 7th District Governor’s Cup competition. UHA placed second overall in the competition. Page 3 *State Qualifiers* Congratulations to the following Upper School students that have qualified for the State Governor’s Cup Academic Competition: Sangeet Sheth in Language Arts Sherafghan Khan in Science UHA was also awarded the Katherine C. Hume Sportsmanship Award during the KAAC Governor’s Cup Regional Competition. Academy Action Mr. and Miss Blazer Mr. and Mrs. Blazer is an award that is chosen by the faculty and staff to honor those students that exemplify the best of UHA. Mr. & Miss Blazer is for seniors only. Our 2015 Mr. & Miss Blazer are Matt Armstrong and Carson Bryant. Congratulations! Junior Mr. and Miss Blazer Junior Mr. and Miss Blazer is also chosen by faculty and staff and is for eighth graders only. Our 2015 Junior Mr. & Miss Blazer are Drew McGowan and Sabrina Hall. Congratulations! UHA Junior Named Volleyball Athlete of the Year Isabella Norrid, a junior at UHA, has been named the Southern Pennyrile Volleyball Athlete of the year. At 5’3”, Norrid plays the position of libero for the team and helped the Blazers have an unprecedented season. Congratulations to Norrid, the volleyball team, and Coach Faye Hendricks. UHA Wrestler Gets a Win Senior Daniel Dyess recently placed first in his weight class at wrestling tournament held in Callaway County. State qualifiers in their weight class were: Chance Collins—1st Phillip Bradley—2nd Daniel Dyess—2nd Dalton Putty—3rd Will Crabtree—4th Congratulations, Blazers! Good luck at State! February 2015 Senior Signs Letter of Intent UHA senior Jacob Stevens has signed his National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Lincoln Trail College. Lincoln Trail is a Junior College located in Robinson, IL. Stevens hopes to play two years with Lincoln Trail and then transfer to a Division I college. Since 1994, 25 ball players from Lincoln Trail have gone on to play professionally. Stevens signed his letter in front of his Blazer peers, family members, and former coaches. Stevens is focusing on his upcoming senior season with UHA and then looking forward to playing baseball at the collegiate level. Congratulations Jacob!
