Ron Emmerson won the Wemme

important - Tim Scott was awarded
the Wemme Cup by his fellow Vintage Racers for best representing the
spirit of vintage racing.
T
he 2013 Portland Rose Festival
Rose Cup was a big success.
First - it was fun! The best measure
of any racing weekend. The SCCA
Pit and Paddock crew did a fantastic job organizing and managing the

Traffic was backed up to the freeway by about 6:30AM but by
8:15AM the line was clear and everyone was unloading cars and getting set up for racing. Thank you to
the Pit and Paddock crew and the
various volunteers for a great job.
The Festival Trophy Race, run with
Spec Miatas this year, was a terrific
battle with Will Schrader beating
out Ken Sutherland and Robert
Linse. After 26 laps they were separated by only 3 seconds.
Local hot shoe Phil Fogg, Jr. of the
local “Flying Fogg Clan” took 3
victories in the Pirelli Drivers Cup
as well as second in the Rose Cup
itself.
I could add many more highlights
but most of all I want to thank all
the workers who without a doubt
run the best SCCA races in the
country. Without you none of this
would be possible.
And a big thank you to all our sponsors

Planning for 2014 has already
started. Stay tuned.
And, Matt Crandall showed us all
that horsepower does matter! Congratulations on Matt winning his
third Rose Cup.
Car counts were good in most run
groups and overall we matched or
exceeded last year. SRFs increased
to 33 cars from last year’s 24 and
2011’s 18.
ProDrive has been instrumental in
nurturing this group and encouraged 4 entrants from SoCal, including 3 time National Champ Mike
Miserendino , and 4 racers from SFR
with Dave Harriman.
This inter-Regional rivalry is encouraged by ProDrive’s Racing
Challenge and the West Coast Braggin’ Rights Championshop - won
again this year by Todd Harris and
the Oregon Region SRF drivers.

The 2013 Ford Focus Electric Zaps Range Anxiety
F
rom the Nissan Leaf to the
Chevy Spark to the Honda Fit
EV, Fiat 500e, and the Ford Focus
EV, the focus of green transportation this year is on pure electrics.
But a new term has come into
our language as a result – Range
Anxiety. Simply put, that’s the
fear that you’ll end up sitting at
the side of the road with a dead
battery pack if you take your EV
outside your local urban area.
Are electric cars limited to city
driving? I decided to test that
theory by taking a pure electric
car from Lake Oswego in the
Portland metro area and enjoying a fabulous summer weekend
in the Gorge.
bit heavier than a conventional
Focus, so performance is about
on par with a basic gas engine.
But seriously, if you’re spending
the money on a pure electric car,
you’re probably not cross-shopping the turbo hot rods, right?
system, incredible stereo, Bluetooth for your phone, rear-view
camera, zone climate controls,
heated seats, and a wonderful
configurable dash display that
keeps you informed about the
car’s range and energy usage.
The Focus Electric is rated at 110
MPGe. That little “e” on the end
means “equivalent” and it’s how
the EPA handles the question of
electric versus gas engines. Obviously, the Focus Electric never
uses a drop of gas, so “Miles Per
Gallon” is meaningless. But if
you look at the amount of electrical energy used to move the car,
Outside, you get blind spot side
mirrors, HID headlights, and a
4-wheel disc brake system that
regenerates electricity every
time you step on the brakes. The

240V fast charging stations are
available in Stevenson, Washington as well as Cascade Locks,
Hood River and The Dalles,
Oregon.
Officially the range is about 76
miles, but I routinely saw ranges
in the high 80s. So a quick plot
showed that I could reach the
main cities of the western Gorge
conveniently from Portland. A
little more research showed that
So that sealed the deal – I was
taking the Focus Electric on a
road trip! On the road the Focus is highly sensitive to driving
style, but it also trains you to get
the most range out of a charge.
But I was committed to keeping

Inside, you can see that Ford has
really loaded the Focus Electric

options available for this car,

Once in Stevenson, I pulled on
down to Coe Park, where the
sternwheel boat docks, and I
found the 240V fast charging station. The charger costs $1 to use,
and that’s payable by credit card.
Once activated, you just plug it
in and leave the car to charge.
With the car charging up, I set
about to explore Stevenson. For
a small town, there’s a lot to do.
I came back to the car about
three hours later and found it
completely charged up. I unplugged and headed back for
Portland, this time noting that I
had a fairly strong wind against
me that had been pushing me
eastward on the way out. I still
arrived home with 18 miles of
range left in the Focus. But had
I wanted a longer journey, those
additional charging stations in
Hood River, Cascade Locks, and
The Dalles would have opened
up even more of the Gorge and
Mt. Hood to my green trek.
The car in question was a bright
new Ford Focus Electric. Retailing at $39,200, or available with a
$284/month lease for 36 months,
this car is priced right alongside
the hybrid Chevy Volt, Nissan
Leaf, and other similar electrics.
I’ll leave out the Tesla supercars – at over $100,000 for a fully
configured Tesla, that’s a whole
different ball game.
The Focus Electric is built for real
world use – with seating for five
in standard four-door plus hatch
arrangement, this car is based on
the same platform as the highly
successful gasoline-powered

you get it back coming down the
other side. By the time I got to
Vancouver to get on Washington State Highway 14 heading
east, I’d used up almost half of
our range. I began to worry a
little bit about the hills between

automatic transmission. You get
a charging kit that includes a
120VAC charge cable that fits under the hatch. It can take up to 20
hours to fully charge the Focus
if the batteries are totally exhausted, but in practice 8 hours
is plenty. One of the available op-
dling down the road allowed!
Heading out from Portland, I
soon noticed that energy use is
highly variable depending on
the terrain. The Focus Electric
eats up juice

up hills, but

The bottom line is this – owning a pure electric vehicle need
not tie you to the city. Especially
in the Pacific Northwest, great
natural beauty and outstanding
destinations are well within the
range of the greenest vehicles on
the market today.

Great American Stockcar Series
promises an unforgettable
August race weekend!
O
regon Region SCCA has partnered with the Great American
Stockcar Series (GASS) for our final
event of the 2013 season.
The September 28-29 Triple Regional has been MOVED to August
23-25, going from a 2-day to a 3-day
weekend. With the new weekend
format, Oregon SCCA drivers will
still get three races (but now six sessions) to finish the season: a qualifying session & a race each day!
The weekend will have all the qualities of a pro event, but will maintain the laid back atmosphere of an
Oregon regional race.
Plus! Check out the great hot rod
cruise-in and line-up of bands that
they have arranged! (opposite page)
GASS puts on a great show and Oregon SCCA is excited to share our
event weekend with them. Please
revise your calendar---the new date
for our Oregon Triple Regional with
Vintage and GASS is Friday August
23 through Sunday August 25.
To participate in the ORSCCA Triple
Regional with Vintage event, go to:
www.oregonscca.motorsportreg.

Solo Season in High gear
Flying Solo with
Lacey Otis
W
e recently completed our sixth
event this season, putting us
at the halfway mark and giving me
a convenient opportunity to review
championship standings for some
hotly contested classes.
In B-Stock Keith Gover has continued to inch away from Nick Trujillo
by winning the last four events.
Chuck Spittal also showed speed
early in the year by winning two
events but has missed several more
dropping him down in the standings. E-Prepared is also a tight battle
with only eight points separating
Dan Kuehn and George Wilder,
at the rate they are trading wins I
expect this one to come down to the
wire.
Open PAX is a class with many contenders and no clear leader as there
have been four different winners so
far this season. Ryan Otis is holding onto a points lead, partially as a
result of the always fast Jim Daniels
missing a couple events. Adam Ruff
and Dennis Healy are right on Jim’s
heels with only twelve points separating second through fourth.
be close all season. Perry Keller
holds a five point lead over Gilbert
Calkins in SMF while James Shepherd holds an eight point lead over
Steve Barnes in Super Stock.
Ladies PAX is another class with
four different drivers who have
taken home wins by the halfway
mark. Becky Zacharda has two wins
and maintains a 23-point lead over
Lacey Otis. Both Tami Daniels and
Leah Nagengast have also won
events and are in a strong position
to contend for the class championship.
Street tires and the Street Touring
classes have been gaining popularity in recent years with Street Touring Roadster (STR) becoming one of
the largest classes both nationally
and regionally. Dan Bullis has won
four events in STR and holds a comparatively comfortable 33-point lead
over Morris Green. Meanwhile in
the street tire index class Jon Balgley
has taken home four wins and holds
a 22-point lead over Chris Pethick
who has two wins.
Street Modified FWD (SMF) and
Super Stock are two more hotly
contested classes that are likely to
The season is far enough along for
things to start to take shape, but
still early enough that anything can
happen. The class leaders cannot
take anything for granted while the
challengers have plenty of time to
mount a charge.
We have two events coming up
on July 6th and 7th at PIR. Then
we will return to Packwood, WA
in August for events #9 and #10.
Finally, we will wrap up the season
in September with two more events
at PIR. There’s still plenty of time
to get in on the action before the
season is over. Don’t forget, newcomers are always welcome.
Oregon Region Solo is still in the
hunt for additional sites to use for
Solo competition. Do you happen to know of an open lot with a
smooth surface that is obstruction
free? If you do, please tell us about
it by emailing oregonsolomanager@
gmail.com
Mark your calendars now because
national level Solo competition will
make its way to Packwood this
month. The Tire Rack SCCA Solo
Championship Tour Road to Lincoln Series will be held July 13th &
14th and the following weekend,
July 20th & 21st, the Tire Rack
SCCA ProSolo Series will take place.
The series stop in Packwood brings
with it the opportunity to get in on
some great National level competition, without having to travel half
way across the country. National
level competition brings lots of
excitement, whether you are a competitor or a spectator. There will be
several folks from Oregon Region
competing at these events. Come
cheer them on. You can find more
information about these events on
the SCCA website at www.scca.

I hope to see you there!

OFFICIALS: Mary Thompson,
Karen McCoy, Jeff Zurschmeide
MEMBERS: Doug Berger, Katie
Zurschmeide
ABSENT: Carrie Sutherland, Chris
Hale, Dan Halloran, Bob Brands
CALL TO ORDER: RE Andrew
called the meeting to order at 7:00
pm. Minutes were approved ( Jim/
Bruce)
MEMBER/NEW BUSINESS COMMENTS: Doug Berger, long time
member and photographer was in
attendance to discuss photographer issues at our events. Andrew
has requested that Doug create a
criterion that lays out just what is
necessary to shoot at the track. This
will outline expectations and safety
requirements to assist out track
workers in monitoring these individuals. Doug will create a form for
BOD review and approval.
REGIONAL OFFICE: Karen advised
that on line credit processing is now
working OK.
TREASURER: Absent
14
LOUD PEDAL: Jeff is preparing the
June issue (an important one) and
needs any articles by the weekend.
There is a new writer for Solo articles and that is Lacey Otis.
Jeff is currently taking a class to
further expand his knowledge on
different methods of web publishing and production delivery. Look
for even more good things to come
for our great LP.
DIRECTORS REPORTS:
SOLO II: Novice school had 30
students. It was a good event with
15-20% retention. There were 122
on Sunday.
2 weeks ago saw them at Packwood
with good weather and pavement.
165 for the weekend. June will find
them back at Packwood.
George plans to participate in The
Kenton Street Fair this Sunday.
RALLY: Absent report via e-mail
RallyCross had an event on Mothers day, 50 competitors and some
of their mothers were in attendance. Competitors like the new
venue when it is dry.
RoadRally. Oregon Rally Group has
lost their Road Rally director, so I’m
trying to make sure that Parkinson
is still organized. Road Not Taken
is still on for Aug 17-18. The organizers are still working on permit or
if no permits are needed.
DIRECTOR I: Kim advised the contract with Shilo has been signed for
our Nov. banquet.
Oregon Region SCCA
DIRECTOR II: Absent
VINTAGE: (Pending election results) Hans advised that the Time
Trials brought out the need for help
with navigating, the need for better
communication on the expectations
to run. They do give the opportunity for more track time and would
like to see them added in again.
ROAD RACE: Jim thought the
event was good and that the T
shirts were a hit with the group.
Looking forward to Rose Cup event
as it is a unique one. Actually the
lineup for the rest of the season is
great. The Majors in July
and then the revision of the Sept
event to Aug with GASS should be
exciting and provide some great
racing.
Any Mazda drivers needing to run
Hoosier Tires contact Shawn Hedrick. He may have loaners available
for use.
The first Club Trials left us knowing
that using HOD or something like
it would make these work better or
smoother.
PAST REGIONAL EXEC: Absent
ASST: REGIONAL EXEC: Bruce
feels it would be a good idea to do
a one time buy from SCCA of an enhanced expanded list of drivers to
use for e-mailing about our events.
REGIONAL EXEC: For Rose Cup
all participants will be in the south
paddock. Spaces will be assigned
and directed. The only thing that
will be housed across track will be
T&S. Move in for everyone will be
7 on Thursday the13th.
We have been working on putting
together a deal in running a joint
event with the GASS series and
Oregon SCCA. I am pleased to let
you know that we have been able to
come to an agreement between the
two organizations. We will be cancelling our September weekend (with the blessings of
Mark W and PIR) and taking over
the weekend of August 23rd to 25th. There are many reasons why we
wanted to make this happen. First
and foremost, they will be contributing $10,000 to the expenses for
the weekend in exchange for a run
group. This is on par with what we charge
other groups (Socal FC guys in July,
PDC at R/C, etc.) and gives us a
better chance financially for the club
that weekend. Second, our strong
belief in having our competitors
getting properly prepared for the
runoffs. If we consider our club the “college
level” of motorsports and with our
national championship drivers and
volunteers alike, having the event
with enough time prior to runoffs
to properly prepare and travel is
important.
On another note: our September
weekend was not the best for us
to run. Many drivers were going
to be at the Runoffs and some had
stated they just physically could not
get back in time. That and being
flanked by Enduro’s and Chumpcar
at that time and I believe we would
have had a tough time filling the
fields.
This also follows along with our
concept of running a race every 3-4
weeks throughout the season. The
gap between our July 4th event
(July 28th at the ridge) and we were
looking at almost 2 months off. By
making this change we will be able
to bring that back to our initial goal
of schedule consistency. For all the reasons and more, I feel it
is in the best interest of the club and
its future. If you have any questions
please don’t hesitate to ask. ADJOURN M/S (George/Kim)

behalf of all of the drivers, we can’t
thank the workers enough!
I wish I could have thanked every volunteer
worker individually.
There are many people to thank
and recognize – planning for Rose
Cup begins in JULY of the preceding year. Dan Halloran, Andrew
Foley, Todd Butler, Bruce Wilson,
and many others worked on vari-
months and months. Some things
really stood out, not that they were
unique to Rose Cup – it’s just that
the clarity of some observations
crystallized over the weekend:

• You guys (and gals)
are FAST! Racing,
being racing, normally looks to the
sharp end of the grid
to ply adulations
and superlatives of
speed. But, from the
perspective of a midpack racer in a field
of 30 Spec Miata’s …
I was pedaling as fast
as I could and having
a blast at it.
• You stewards are
there to help us race.
Dang, never thought
I’d say that seriously,
without a crossed or
extended finger …
but, it’s true. Gary
Van Horn is a racer’s
steward: he applies
I wish I could have thanked every
volunteer worker individually.
Bobby Smethers has a great Race
Ops team.
Gordon Jones, running Tech, likely
put in as many – or more hours –
than dang near anyone: he was at
the track most of Thursday, then
Friday through Sunday from early
until late.
• Grouping all
race groups in the
South Paddock
took a good deal
of cooperation
… and it really
worked! Entrants
and fans remarked
it was great to have all the race cars
in one area. It was no accident that
reserved parking areas for Vintage,
Spec Racer Ford, Spec Miata, and
karts worked well, despite close
quarters: each of these race classes
had a friendly Oregon Region member, from that group, assigned to directing entrants to their designated
parking area. With just one hothead
(out of 300 entrants), everyone
cooperated with parking. Next year,
we will have an assigned area, close
to the paddock area, for those racers
who help with paddock congestion
by remote parking their tow vehicle
and trailer.
Christopher Nawrocki, while running the E-Crew, seemingly was
everywhere … helping drivers and
doing whatever was needed to keep
the show moving.
• Good sportsmanship is contagious … while we are all racers, I
saw numerous examples of racers
helping racers repair broken racer
cars, of Oregon Region members
chatting up with the general public,
workers – as always – doing whatever was necessary to make things
run smoothly.
Before you know it … it’ll be Oregon’s time to shine Nationally with
the US Majors Race in July, followed
by what will be a blockbuster of
an event, as SCCA combines with
GASS to end the year with a triple
Regional … and a rock concert to
boot!
On behalf of all of the drivers, we
can’t thank the workers enough.
It was Pit and Paddock (Jimbo, Jason, and Chuck) staying up late on
Thursday night to escort late arriving racers to a paddock area.
Karen McCoy is so consistently
outstanding and giving of herself,
it’s hard to remember that on race
weekends, she’s a volunteer.
Tim Stanley showed flexibility
throughout the weekend, as his
Pace Car duties multiplied in complexity with various sponsor cars
and VIP cars on track.
Ali and her F&C crew were, as
always, amazing. Again, THANK
YOU race workers!
Tired of spending big money on the car and not
going any faster?
Why not invest in yourself?
Our photo-realistic world class racing simulator allows
you to practice and test before the race weekend at a
fraction of the cost of test days.
So you arrive prepared to win!

to Portland 0n September 22
WHAT: Tire Rack Street Survival®
Teen Defensive Driving Class
WHERE: Portland International
Raceway
WHEN:
2013
Sunday September 22,
WHY:
IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT
DRIVING … IT’S ABOUT LIVING
Last year, over 5,000 American teenagers died in motor vehicle crashes,
the leading killer of American
aged 16 to 19, accounting for 40%
of fatalities in that age bracket. To
reduce this number, Tire Rack Street
Survival® developed a national
driver education program aimed at
teaching teens the skills they need
to stay alive behind the wheel.
On Sunday, September 22 at Portland International Raceway, the
Sports Car Club of America (SCCA)
Oregon Region will host a Tire Rack
Street Survival® driving school.
During this one-day (8:00 AM – 4:00
PM) class, students gain valuable
new skills to improve their driving
techniques on the road. Students
drive their own cars through realworld emergency driving exercises,
with an instructor in the next seat to
provide immediate feedback.
DOES YOUR YOUNG DRIVER
KNOW HOW TO RESPOND TO A
SKID?
The Street Survival program provides students with valuable skills
to improve their capabilities to respond to a driving emergency. This
class is 100% focused on teaching
young drivers car control techniques for safer street driving. Note:
cars will not be driven on PIR’s
race track. Parents are welcome
to observe drills and listen in the
classroom.
