Roster of Confederate Dead in the Fredericksburg
ROSTER of the CONFEDERATE DEAD in the FREDERICKSBURG CONFEDERATE CEMETERY ROBERT K. KRICK FREDERICKSBURG: 1974 Just over one year after General Lee surrendered at Appomatox, the ladies of Fredericksburg organized themselves to care for the graves of the Confederate dead from the battlefields around Fredericksburg. The Ladies' Memorial Association was founded on May 10, 1866. It is still in existence today, fulfilling the mission established as its goal more than a century ago. In 1867 land for a Confederate Cemetery was purchased, in a location adjoining the City Cemetery. Confederate dead were located on the battlefields and farms throughout the surrounding counties and reinterred there. Major J. Horace Lacy coordinated a fund-raising drive which provided the means for a wall around the cemetery and a monument to be erected in the midst of the graves. The monument is a granite column crowned with a statue of a Confederate soldier, unveiled on June 9, 1884. The soldiers' graves had been marked with cedar posts at the time of their reinterrment. By the late 1880's, the posts were decaying and it was apparent that permanent markings were necessary. Since there was no money for this project, it was suggested that the posts be removed and the grave sites be made a smooth green field -- the names being recorded in the Court House. Mrs. J. N. Barney came to the rescue with a patriotic appeal to the various state legislatures throughout the South. She succeeded in persuading the Georgia legislature to supply marble stones for that state's dead, and eventually all of the other ex-Confederate states followed suit. The headstones in the cemetery today are the result of this effort. One of Fredericksburg's greatest days was June 10, 1890, when the town was flooded with Confederate veterans, including numeTous generals, t o observe the annual memorial day and to dedicate the cemetery and monument. General Bradley T. Johnson delivered a flowery Confederate oration, and the graves were carefully decorated. The grave stones of the Confederate dead in the Confederate Cemetery and the adjoining City Cemetery have been carefully recorded and arranged in alphabetical order. The entries consist of the name, followed by the row and section number, and then any additional inscription on the stone. The inscriptions have been copied verbatim in every case. The additional information included infrequently, has been enclosed in parenthesis. For instance, Sergt. B. F. Allerson is buried in row 4 of section 11 and the markersupplies the added information that he was from North Carolina. Col. Robert S. Chew is buried in Section 10 of the City Cemetery, and his stone indicates the years of his life. The fact that he was Colonel of the 30th Virginia has been added from another source. Doubtless there are many Confederate veterans buried in the two cemeteries, but not recorded here. Soldiers who are not identified as such from the markers themselves have not been included in this listing, with the exception of a very few particularly prominent persons. Most of the soldiers killed in action are buried in Sections 11 through 14, around the base of the monument. Section 11 is the western one, followed in clockwise order by 12 on thenorth, 13 on the east, and 14 on the south of the monument. Sections 1 through 9 of the Confederate Cemetery are east and north of the main soldiers' area. Section 1 is just to your right as you enter the gate off Washington Avenue, and 2 through 6 continue up the wall along that side. Sections 9 , 8 and 7 extend north from the edge of the soldiers' area to the north wall. No row numbers have been assigned to any sections other than the battlefield dead near the monument. A map of the sections is usually on display in the cemetery to aid you in your search for a particular grave. Confederate dead in the City Cemetery have been included where possible. The city sections begin with 1 in the far southeastern corner of the cemetery, in the angle between William Street and Washington Avenue. 2 through 6 stretch up the east wall, along Washington Avenue. 7 through 12 are on the opposite side of the driveway, beginning next to the Confederate Cemetery and running back down to William Street. A number of Confederate battlefield dead were buried southwest of the main soldiers' area, with headstones matching the rest of the military interrments. The City Cemetery subsequently expanded to and beyond this location, and the Confederates are all but covered by more recent burials. These sites, along the edge of City Sections 8-12, are referred t o in the roster as "SW City." The frequent assistance of George H. S. King, eminent Virginia genealogist and official of the Fredericksburg City Cemetery, is gratefully acknowledged. Robert K. Krick Fredericksburg, Virginia December, 1973 A,, B. P. 4/13 A,, C. H.
