~ c£: nJs?^ MASSACHUSETTS INTEKSCHOLASTI The MIAA: Building the Future Through Athletics MASSACHUSETTS INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHL TIC ASSOCIATION Richard R Neal Executive Director Last year, more than 180,000 young men and women participated in athletic programs of the 366 MIAA member schools. These student-athletes involved themselves in one or more of the 34 sports recognized by the association. The MIAA ranks in the Top 10 nationally among state associations with respect to the number of students who annually participate in athletic programs. "Building the future" through the unique learning opportunities available to students beyond the normal school day and school week prepares participants for the challenges of life. Good citizenship, leadership, integrity, loyalty, duty, ethics and respect are elements of learning within our athletic programs. Their character development will prove critical to the future of our society. The state tournament experience is a celebration of excellence for high school hockey teams throughout the state. The MIAA applauds the success of every team, their coaches and their supportive communities. The goal of the MIAA is to successfully coordinate sectional and state tournaments so that participants can be proud of their individual efforts and proud of the schools and communities they represent. The Hockey Committee hopes this year's state tournament is a positive experience for all participants and supporters of high school athletics. On behalf of the MIAA Hockey Committee and our Board of Directors, I welcome you to the 2002 state hockey tournament. Please help ensure a great event by demonstrating positive behavior in support of all participating students, coaches, officials and fans. Thank you. Mission Statement The mission of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association is to serve member schools and the maximum number of students by providing leadership and support for the conduct of interscholastic activities which will enrich the educational experience of all participants. The MIAA will promote interschool activities that provide lifelong and life-quality learning experiences to the students while enhancing their achievement of educational goals. William N. Gaine Jr. Deputy Director The Massachusetts Hockey Coaches' State Association and MIAA are proud to present the: James F. Mulloy Sportsmanship Award Six years ago, James Mulloy, a great friend of high school hockey and an outstanding educator, passed away. Jim Mulloy served as a teacher and administrator for more than 37 years in the Everett Public Schools. During this time, he served a total of 24 years as a varsity ice hockey coach at three MIAA schools: Dom Savio, Maiden Catholic and Everett High School, and was honored as a member of the Massachusetts State Coaches' Hall of Fame. Next to his family, Jim's great love was ice hockey, as MIAA Ice Hockey Chair and Statewide Hockey Observer, his legacy was marked by his promotion and dedication to sportsmanship in the game. To that end, the Massachusetts Ice Hockey Coaches' Association and the MIAA established the James F. Mulloy Sportsmanship Award, to be presented annually to the most outstanding boys and girls hockey programs in Massachusetts, in Division I, II, and III reflecting their allegiance to the goals of sportsmanship. The James F. Mulloy Sportsmanship Award will be presented to deserving teams during the state finals on March 17 at the FleetCenter. MIAA Philosophy In the education of 63 percent of the students attending 350 MIAA member schools, athletic participation is a critical component. What should drive those responsible for the student-athletes and their programs is the educational mission of school activities. For many students the most stable environment in their lives is that provided by the high school activity programs. Often the best opportunity for crisis intervention, drug prevention, "day care" programs, and the like are school activity programs. The cost is minimal, while the worth is maximal. While winning contests rather than losing them, is a laudable goal, it should not be the primary priority of high school sport programs. What should be the rationale behind high school activities is preparing students to succeed in life. Win or lose, students should learn lessons of lasting and positive nature. Within high school sports programs, students learn the values associated with discipline, performing under stress, teamwork, sacrifice, commitment, effort, accountability, citizenship, confidence, leadership and organizational skills, participating within rules, physical well-being, striving towards excellence, and many other values. Such values must be the focus of every program. Ethics, playing within the spirit of the rules, and good sportsmanship (which is good citizenship) must be woven into the fabric of the high school athletic program. The Indians have played well against some of the state's top clubs this winter, having beaten Reading and Arlington to win the Ed Burns Classic, as well as Chelmsford and Waltham, while tying Austin Prep, Hingham and Arlington. Jarrett Scarpaci, Bryan Calabro, Rob Fanning and Mark Morreale pace the offense in front of All-League goaltender Ryan McCauley. CM shoots for ninth crown St. John's Shewsbury top seed Always a perennial threat to capture the state title come March, Arlington is back for another go-round. Members of the Super 8 tournament every year of its conception except for once (1 997), the Spy Ponders again feature a high-powered offense, big, mobile defensemen and a one of the best keepers around in junior Jeff Mansfield (2.20 GAA). The Greater Boston League champions are led up front by juniors Nolan Boike and Pat Gannon, each of whom pocketed more than 40 points, as well as senior captain Brendan Keeffe. Arlington Catholic enters the postseason on a roll and is the only club that can lay claim to beating St. John's of Shrewsbury in the regular season. Coach Dan Shine's Catholic Central League runner-up boasts a bevy of scoring, led by the explosive first line of junior Mike Foley and seniors Bob Fanciullo and Joe Piekos, who combined for almost 140 points. Rob Morgan mans the AC cage well, having allowed just under two goals a game. A Super 8 participant a year ago, Austin Prep looks to go even deeper in this year's tournament. The Catholic Central League champion is led by the dynamic 1-2 punch of UMass-bound Chris Capraro and fellow senior co-captain Dan Crowley, who produced more than 120 points between them as one of the state's most lethal combinations. Alek Vienneau, Jason Lawrence, and sophomore Jeff Grant add depth in front of junior keeper Jim Sarno (2.07 GAA). After falling to eventual champion Catholic Memorial in overtime in last year's final, second-seeded B.C. High is hungry to reach the top of the mountain this time around. The Eagles enter the postseason on a BC High junior defenseman Justin Greene roll, having won their last nine regular-season contests, including a sweep of Catholic Conference foes the second time through the league. Sophomore Matt Greene finished second in the league in scoring, and is helped up front by senior captain Jordan Virtue, senior Chris O'Brien, juniors Ross O'Brien, Mike Rosata, Terry Smallcomb and faceoff specialist Mike Skryzniarz. Captain Frank Curreri leads the defense that also includes Justin Greene, Brian O'Hanley, Jeff Landers and John Chandler. Either junior Travis Luongo or sophomore Joe Grossman can be counted on between the pipes. One of the best stories to come out of Eastern Massachusetts this winter is that of Bi I (erica, which overcame the tragic death of senior defense- Since the advent of the Super 8 championshiop in 1991, the Knights of Catholic Memorial have claimed the title a remarkable nine times, including the last four in a row. Getting No. 5 won't be an easy task, but looking past coach Bill Hanson's squad would be a fatal mistake. Some late-season bumps in the road have caused a shuffle in the lineup, putting the team's top three forwards - left wing Scott McDougall, center Kevin Cotter and right wing Chris Meyers, the Catholic Conference scoring champion — together on the Knights' top unit. Seniors Tony King and Chris Cappadonna, juniors Mike Dorsey and Jim Foley, sophomores Cory Quirk and Vic Pacella, and freshman Billy Ryan all add scoring punch and depth on the next two lines. Bryan Goodwin and Kyle Sibley form the team's top defensive pair in front of junior keeper Ed Nehiley. Although they were shaded by Billerica for the MVC/DCL title, Chelmsford hasn't let that deter it in its quest for a state title. Bryan Castonguay has had a spectacular season in the Lions' cage, with a 2.17 goals-against average. The scoring is paced by Todd Fletcher (18-27-45). Shawn Reardon (23-15-38), Ted Reardon (9-18-27) and Sean Patno (10-13-23). After winning the Division 1 state Division 1A Tournament Previews title last season, Hingham looks to become the first public school team to capture the Super 8 championship hardware. Winners of the newlyformed Patriot League, the fourthseeded Harbormen lost only to B.C. High (3-2) this winter and boast a bevy of slick, talented players at all positions. Goalie John Lynch (1.07 GAA) is the team's backbone in goal, with four junior defensemen — Brian Marsden, Tony Morash, Mike McNulty and Jed McDonald — protecting him. Up front, seniors Andrew Genovese, Mike Boles, Pat Devine and Kevin Olson provide firepower, as do juniors Matt Paget, Greg Genovese and Garret Daigler. The Middlesex League champions from Reading figure to make their presence felt this March. Having won 12 of 13 games from January into February, the Rockets once again have strong goaltending in the form of Bobby Rossi and a slew of talented snipers up front. Mike Ottariano, Robert Campbell and Brian Collins all netted more than 40 points and don't plan on stopping their scoring exploits at this point in the season, with Ryan Tierney and Rick Jackson providing scoring depth. The Rockets enter the postseason off a big win over Catholic Memorial. Playing as a Division 1 independent, St. John's Shrewsbury turned away virtually all comers in compiling one of the best records in the state. A year removed from playing in the Division 1 state title game, the Pioneers have their sights set higher this time around in the Super 8. They've beaten B.C. High, St. John's Prep, Archbishop Williams, Xaverian, Springfield Cathedral and Arlington. Matthew Vokes (26-21-47), Peter Collins (11-19-30), Paul Dufault (151 5-30), Sean Murray (11 -1 9-30) and Ryan Ginand (11-18-29) spearhead an explosive offense. In goal, the tandem of Matt Gorman (1.45 GAA) and Dan Gemme (2.02 GAA) combined to allow only 33 goals. The Marauders, who finished the season on a white-hot 10-1-1 streak, are led offensively by Scott Masse, Paul Garabedian and Mike Shaw. After starting the season needing to fill the shoes of 15 players who either graduated or transferred, Matignon came together down the stretch to qualify in the season's final week of play. Sean Rea, Greg Corcoran and Mark Hanscom power coach Marty Pierce's offense. Jim Cleary and Jim Broderick form the Warriors' defensive backbone. Medford is another dangerous team that took third place in the GBL. Offensive firepower is the Mustangs' strength, powered by seniors Jay Garrity and David Liberatore, both of whom netted more than 35 points. Mark Bates, Brian Bates, Matt Downey and Joe Ulandy add depth. Andrew DiFraia is the team's top blueliner in front of keeper Andrew Piekos. St. John's Prep returns to the postseason after a three-year hiatus. Coach Bob Marinelli's club has plenty of players up front who can score. Keeping the puck out of the net will be the Eagles' biggest challenge in the postseason. Having beaten both Catholic Memorial and B.C. High en route to a second place finish in the Catholic Conference, the Eagles boast juniors Dylan Cox (19-19-38) and Matt Antonelli (11 -23-34), senior captain Mike Hines (9-13-22) and sophomore speedster John McCarthy (16-10-26) as their prime scoring threats. Always a threat come March, Waltham is poised to make a run deep into the postseason foray. Runners-up in the GBL, the Hawks can safely rely on senior goaltender Pat Watson to get the job done and four-year starting blueliner D.J. Matignon junior forward Chuck Kavanagh Aucoin in front of him. Sean Losier is the club's leading scorer, with fellow seniors Brian Dudley and Joe Lacava, as well as juniors Chris Graceffa, Derek Gauvin and Mike Aiello, providing the necessary depth. In order to do some damage in the postseason, Winchester will need to get injured defenseman Dan Spang (concussion) back into the lineup. The Boston University-bound blueliner makes the Sachems click offensively with his slick passing, and also controls the play in his own zone. Winchester, gunning for its third Division 1 state title in the last five years, counts on Andrew Clavette, Jason Spang, Dave Notartomaso, Adam Delaney-Winn and John-Paul Martinetti up front. Woburn exceeded all preseason expectations by not only qualifying for the postseason, but taking third place in perhaps the state's most competitive conference, the Middlesex League. The Tanners, who return 13 players from last year's tourney club, have Bryan Natale, Scott Quigley, Kevin Burns, Andrew Santo, Brent Keeley and Dennis Callahan, among others, to turn to for scoring up front. Both junior Anthony Tofuri and sophomore David Ralli are capable of winning a game by themselves in goal. PHIL STAGEY Salem News Division 1 South Tournament Preview High seeds face tough tests For the teams who did not make the Division 1A tournament, Division 1 South is not a bad place to land. This is an especially dangerous division to be a high seed, because some of the lower-seeded teams have earned their battle scars by playing against teams that qualified for 1 A. Falmouth won the Old Colony League, which came as a surprise to many including head coach Buddy Ferreira. The Clippers made some personnel moves early in the season, moving captain Chris Tholke from the first line to the second, RJ. Lovett was the second-leading scorer in the OCL, combining with Erik Marr and Tim Studley to form a potent first line. Archbishop Williams, when it is not involved in the Division 1A tournament, is always considered a threat in Division 1. The Bishops have outstanding balance with a productive first line of Pat McCarthy, Matt Pollara and John Delaney. Kevin Pettinelli and Ryan Salter have also had productive seasons. Mike Ronan is a tournament-tested netminder. Xaverian has an outstanding goalie in Jerry Moffett and has all the tools to be a contender. Brendan O'Brien and Greg Busch handled most of the goal scoring for the Hawks but Paul Driscoll, a converted defenseman, had a solid season up front. Milton started the season at 0-2 but did not lose again. Billy Mahernas was among the Bay State League's leading scorers and Kevin Lynch was one of the hottest scorers as the season ended. Mike Foley has a sparkling 1.63 goals against average. Quincy finished third in the Atlantic Coast League and made a late season bid for the league title. The Presidents feature one of the top scorers in the state in Dave Germaine, who teamed with his brother, Matt, on a potent Division 1 South seedings, schedule I.Milton 2. Framingham 3. Quincy 4. Shawn Flaherty has played well in the net. For Braintree, there may not be a more exciting player in the tournament than Ryan Grant, who scored 23 goals. Many of the Wamps younger players such as freshman Bobby Cusack and Pat Bamberg have excelled. Mike Larkin is a highly respected defenseman. Framingham is no stranger to the tournament. Willie Ortiz has been their leading scorer, working well with forwards Fred Simone and Adam Vanbuskirk. Colin Hume is the prototype of a power forward. The Flyers have a decision to make in net between David McAdams and Tyler Boudreau. Barnstable is not the power it has been in the past but the Red Raiders have an outstanding goaltender. Mike Kennedy made 50-save games a regular part of his routine. One of the best stories in the tournament is Brookline. Usually in the lower echelon of the Bay State League, the Warriors were led by defensemen and captains Ged Wieschhoff, Ryan Watson and Kyle Barney. Big Three champion Durfee features a hot goalie in Jameson Hart, who backstopped the Hilltoppers to a 134-3 regular season. Kevin DaSilva, Peter Medeiros and Eric Araujo lead the Hilltoppers. Silver Lake can score in bunches if players such as Adam Lugue, Andy Mitchell and Todd Costa are on their game. North Quincy is another OCL team that is a threat. Mike McGongagle and Richard Stone enter the tournament playing a solid brand of hockey. Needham and Norwood have also been well tested in the Bay State League. Division 2 North Tournament Preview Deep field could provide entertaining tournament As the deepest field in this year's state hockey tournament, the Division 2 North draw figures to be a war that includes the top teams from the Northeastern Conference, Cape Ann League and Merrimack Valley/Dual County Division 2 League, among others. Defending state champion Danvers remains the favorite, but don't count out perennial powers such as Wilmington, Saugus, St. Mary's of Lynn, Winthrop, or Amesbury. There's no reason to think that Northeastern Conference champion Danvers can't defend its North crown as the Falcons aim to become the first Division 2 team to ever win back-toback state titles. Rugged senior captain and left wing Bryan Duggan (728-35) combines brains and brawn while fellow senior Matt Gotts (20-1535) and junior star Ryan Hayes (1 222-34) can also score in bunches. Senior center Kyle McCullough was 1 7-11 -28 despite missing nine games with injuries. Jeff Bettencourt, Billy Langmaid, Chris Horn and Eric Fladger lead the defense in front of junior goalie C.J. Sullivan (4 shutouts). It should come as no surprise that Winthrop looms as one of the North favorites. Coach Tom Holmen's club is once again littered with speedy forwards, scoring from all three lines and one of the division's top defensemen in two-way threat Andrew Brugman. Bobby Kneeland, Rob DeLeo, Matt Driscoll, Pat Gunn and Dan Wilson are just some of the names to watch up front, with Adam Sullivan playing better and better in the Vikings' goal. The proverbial team that no one wants to play may very well be young but extremely talented Saugus. The 1999 state champions hit a speed bump or two early, but jelled quickly by the end of the season. The Sachems rely on scoring from senior captain Matt Terrio, Todd Nichols, Brian Bobbins, Ricky Robbins, Brian Division 2 North seedings, schedule 1 . Danvers 2. St. Mary's 3. Winthrop 4. Amesbury 5. Boasting one of the North Shore's top goaltenders in senior and two-time league MVP Kevin Dodier (2.21 GAA), Amesbury must be considered a threat. The Fighting Indians, edged out of the Cape Ann League title by Wilmington, have depth in Marcus Green (20-13-33) and Nick Motsis (18-15-33) as well as Darren Martin (10-12-22), Jon Herman (6-15-21) and Nate Trotter (8-12-20). Defenseman Pete Kokoras (2-12-14) led the team with a plus-28. Four-time Cape Ann League champion Wilmington looks to take it a step or two further after being bumped in the North semifinals a year ago. Coach Steve Scanlon's club, which at one point went 13 games without a loss, is strong from the goal on out. Goalie Paul Sferrazza had four shutouts, and finished with a goals-against average under 1.50. Anthony Tomasi (15-2136), Geoff Ferreira (15-16-31) and Dan Liberty lead the offense. Triton will need to find some offense to stay competitive, having been shut out three times and held to two goals or less in three other games. Goalie Chris Gulano has been steady, while the offense has come from Ryan McLaughlin, Aaron Burke, Bryan Perry and Talon Packer. Defensemen Taylor Moran and Ben Colby have been exceptional. For the 11 th straight season, veteran head coach Bob Driscoll and Masconomet are in the postseason. How well the Chieftains play defensively will go a long way towards determining how far they go, as senior captains RJ. LeColst (2.70 GAA) in goal and All-League defenseman Nick DeBaggis (4 goals, 12 assists) attempt to put the clamps down on their opponents. Dave Barker and Tony Jackson each had 15 goals and 14 assists. Newburyport shouldn't be overlooked after having gone through the wars of Division 2 North Tournament Preview the Cape Ann League Large division. Juniors Ryan Tierney and John Reagan are two of the Clippers' premier snipers, as are freshman Joe Hill and senior captains Wes Johnson and Pat Mitchell. Rich Dellaria stands large in goal. A year removed from playing in the North title game, Lynnfield figures to be one of a handful of teams capable of getting back, if not beyond, that point this year. Coach Vin Mirasolo's club won its fifth straight Cape Ann League Small title this winter thanks to scorers such as senior Craig Moreton (16 goals, 21 assists) and sophomore Kevin Maresco (8 goals, 23 assists). Senior sniper Jimmy Nolan, injured for much of the season, is also expected back for the playoffs, giving the Pioneers added punch. Dan Neary and Jimmy Nugent have done an outstanding job of patrolling the blueline in front of sophomore goalie Ryan Sheehan. First-year head coach Frank Golden led North Reading back to the state tournament this winter. His club is led by goaltender Mike Kazmierczak, who surrendered just 46 goals en route to a 2.60 goals-against average. Casey Vadala, Mark Vaughn and Mark Pinkham provide scoring punch. Having won just five games a year ago, Pentucket/Georgetown turned it around this winter and got back into the postseason, thanks to its second place finish in the CAL Small. After starting the season 2-5-1, the Sachems came on strong in mid-January and into February for their first tourney berth in coach Bill Burns' five seasons. Sophomore scoring star Bill Bomba and senior defenseman Sean Labelle are CAL All-Stars. Goaltenders Dave Linehan and Brian Robinson are both capable of turning in stellar performances in the Pentucket crease. Having won its first postseason game in 21 years last March, Pea body is shooting for bigger and better things this year. The three-time defending GBL Division 2 champion has as much depth as any team in the division, which will be put to the test. However, Pope and sophomore Ken DiMaggio have led the Warrior offense, with R.J. Spuehler and Paul DelleDonne, both four-year starters, taking care of business in their own end. Senior Mike Patton and Brian Mahoney can both be counted on in the L-S cage. Hoping to put a disappointing firstround loss in last year's state tournament behind them, MVC/DCL champion from Andover has its sights set higher. Senior captain Peter Burbank and juniors Mike Corey, John Limauro and Steven Johnson are counted on to supply offensive spark while allstar defenseman Tim LeGrow is as strong a two-way threat as there is. Winlhrop senior forward Robert Kneeland speedy forward Mark Addorisio is out with a broken hand. The Tanners will rely on brothers Anthony (10-15-25) and Gary Palmieri (10-11-21), along with Danny McGuinness (7-9-16), Ian Parkinson (6-9-15) and senior captain Kenny Rougier (6-12-18) up front. Blake Palladino, Kevin Osborne and Jeff Glowick are steady defensemen, while senior Mark Famigletti (3 shutouts) or sophomore Joey Lavoie (2 shutouts) both answer the bell in goal. For the first time in its 57-year history, Salem can finally call itself a tournament team. The Witches, led by 25year old head coach Kristian Hanson, won their first five games and kept that momentum rolling all season, playing an independent schedule. The Witches boast one of the state's top scorers in senior center Justin Wilkins (25 goals, 33 assists), who has a pair of 7-point games to his credit. Fellow senior Ross Childs (24-19-43) can also score prodigiously. Mark Guy, a senior captain, logs heavy minutes on the blueline along with Jeff Zolla, while junior Dan Lassiter has been solid in the Salem net. Returning virtually the same team from a year ago, Lmcoln-Sudbury secured second place in the MVC/DCL Division 2 standings. Seniors Brian Moore and Michael Westford Academy returns to the postseason thanks in large part to nine non-league wins. Senior captain Dennis Kane, a four-year all-star, is one of the division's most dangerous snipers, having pocketed 21 goals and 20 assists. Chris Rogers (17 goals, 17 assists) has also had a hot hand for the Grey Ghosts. Having moved up from Division 3, where it was a perennial power, the move to Division 2 doesn't seem like it will affect St. Mary's of Lynn. Mark Burns has been terrific in the cage, with a 1.72 GAA and four shutouts on his resume for the Catholic Central League Division 2 champs. The team's scoring depth is just as impressive, led by forwards Charlie Capillo (1026-36), Justin Santerre (20-13-33) and Mike Polsonetti (5-21-26). For a young team that hoped to claw its way to .500, Bishop Fenwick surpassed alt expectations to take second in the CCL Division 2. Senior captain Josh Takis has been the team's heart and soul, scoring better than 40 points in his final season. Linemates Scott Rehlander and Sean Connell each hovered around the 30point mark, with Matt Gallucci the team's defensive leader. Senior firstyear starter Chris Langis has been stellar in goal with a 2.55 GAA. PHIL STAGEY Salem News Division 2 South Tournament Preview Duxbury looms as favorite While not as large as the North, Division 2 South promises to be fast, hard-hitting and explosive. Duxbury looms as the favorite, but defending champ Boston Latin, Marshfield, Whitman-Hanson, Dennis-Yarmouth, Martha's Vineyard and Sandwich will all have a say. Marshfield finished second in the predominantly Division 1 Old Colony League. Sophomore Pete Wilson led the Rams in scoring. Goalies Josh Ethier and sophomore Tim Bonham combined to allow just 39 goals. As junior Josh Robertson goes, so goes Whitman-Hanson. Robertson surpassed the 50-point mark. Gerry Coulstring, Ryan Cole, Dan Roman, freshman Ryan Lenane and James Lyons are other key cogs. After finishing .500 a year ago, Sandwich shocked everyone by winning the competitive ACL title. Ryan King was the Blue Knights' stalwart between the pipes, leading the team to wins over Martha's Vineyard, Whitman-Hanson and Bourne. One of the South Shore's biggest surprises has been Franklin, which won eight games last year but nearly doubled that to place second in the Hockomock League. Goaltender Sean Bertoni has been outstanding with a 1.52 GAA. Duxbury coach Peter Saggesse's team has scoring, depth, and a top-notch goalie in sophomore Mike Zarella (1.95 GAA). The Green Dragons faced 16 Division 1 opponents. Sophomores Boomer Ewing (18-2139) and Tim Daniels (18-15-33) lead the way. Duxbury hopes to have senior captains John Sisto (MCL strain) and Pat Kelley (mono) back. The head man may have changed, but Martha's Vineyard's success didn't in Matt Mincone's first year. Sophomore Kraig Mundt proved he is a force to be reckoned with (nearly 50 points). Division 2 South seedings, schedule 1 . Sandwich 14-2-4 2. Duxbury 1 6-4-2 3. Franklin 14-4-2 4. Goaltender John Idoria helped Dennis-Yarmouth to its second straight postseason berth after seven years without qualifying. Defending South champion Boston Latin never put together the stretch it had hoped to, but the Wolfpack should still be considered dangerous. Mike McCarthy, James Duffy, Pat Moran and Pat Balaconis can all score. Having defended its Hockomock League title. Canton is looking for more. Senior assistant captain Mike Christian (10-16-26) leads the forwards. For the first time in seven years, Coyle-Cassidy didn't win the Eastern Athletic Conference crown. But that shouldn't be a barometer of how coach Joe Ouinn's C|UD will fare. Nick Saba (6-16-22) and fellow sophomore Tim Mederios pace the offense. After winning the Division 3 state title a year ago, Hanover ventures into Division 2. The Vikings rely on sophomore goalie Todd Olson. Mike McNulty (9-19-28), Andy Braeda and Andy Ferraro, four-year linemates, are dangerous. Stoughton is back in the postseason after missing by a point last year. Captain Mike Gill (26-11 -37) and sophomore Mike Hudson (12-14-26) lead the Black Knights. As co-champion of the Commonwealth Conference, Shawsheen has a brick wall in net in Justin Brady, who has surrendered just 20 goals while posting a 1.67 GAA. Up front, the Rams rely on Bob Giordano (15-19-34) and Nick Dolan (21-12-33). Defense helped Boston Latin Academy win the regular-season Boston City League championship. Peter Needham has been spectacular in goal, with help from defensemen Adam Mullen and Jake Quigg. The Dragons' lone loss came at the hands of Martha's Vineyard. As champions of the Merrimack Valley/Dual County League Div. 3 for the second straight year (first outright title), Concord-Carl isle must be looked at as a serious threat. The Patriots have scoring punch, led by Ryan Duff (13-20-33). Having an eighth-grader in goal didn't hurt Tyngsboro as it tied Shawsheen for the CAC title. Tom Cole posted a 2.41 GAA. Kevin Achilles (13 goals, 21 assists) is the team's top scorer. The state's top scoring stars reside in South Boston, which reached the North final a year ago before falling to St. Mary's of Lynn. Southie, which placed third in the Boston City League, should go far as long as its top guns continue to fire away at will. Dan Millisi leads the state in scoring with 44 goals and 57 assists for 101 points and averages more than five points a game. His brother, Joe, isn't far off with 21 goals and 51 assists, while Mark Thomas (26 goals, 28 assists) is the third member of this dangerous trio. The Jets of East Boston have the firepower to outgun any team in the division, but defense will determine their fate. Mike Chinn (22-16-38) and Steve LaGrassa (17-21-38) are the top threats. Scoring has been a plus for Hopkinton, with the two top Tri-Valley League scorers on its roster. Both senior Jack Mecone (27 goals, 23 assists) and junior Dan Rodrigues (18 goals, 21 assists) can score at any time. Division 3 North seedings, schedule 1. Latin Academy 2. Concord-Carlisle 3. Game Game Game Game Thursday, March 7 Semifinals 11: Game 7 winner vs. 8 winner 12: Game 9 winner vs. 10 winner. Sunday March 10 Final Game 13: Game 11 winner vs. Game 12 winner. Minuteman hopes to better last season's showing, in which it lost a first-rounder to league rival Shawsheen. Under first-year coach Dominic Pazzia, goaltender Mike Capraro, Keith Taylor and Tommy Muzuch are the key players. Lowell qualified for the second time in as many years under coach Bill Donahue. Junior Mike Theriault (2.01 GAA) has been the team's top goalie, while Paul Feeney (13-28-41) is the team's versatile offensive leader. Tony Kisieo and Jared Fairweather are other defensemen to watch. Medfield tied Bellingham for the Tri-Valley League crown, the third straight season the Warriors have won or shared the title. Now they look to carry that success into the postseason in their first foray into the North. Senior captain Jim McCloud, Nate Batrice, Connor Lennon and Tim Harris spark the Medfield offense. Bellingham, the reigning Tri-Valley League co-champ, should have a large say in how the post-season picture plays out. Senior goalie Brent Landry (2.72 goals-against) has been the backbone. Tony Dionis (13 goals, 18 assists) has led the way on offense. After missing the postseason a year ago, Dracut is back in the picture and ready to make its mark. Ed Lavallee, one of the top goaltenders in the Merrimack Valley, is the team's strength between the pipes. A trip to the South quarterfinals a year ago wasn't enough to satisfy Westwood, which is back looking for more. If they are to get it, the Wolverines will need goaltender Brian Zarthar (2.26 GAA) to come up as big in the postseason as he did during the regular campaign. Medway scored some key non-league victories to earn a post-season berth. Brent Malloy (2.59 GAA) has been steady as the team's top goaltender. Medway is paced by Nate Connor (1915-34). PHIL STAGEY Division 3 South Tournament Preview Traditional powers vacate; wide open field remains The Div. 3 South tournament might be more notable for who isn't here than who is. The two teams that have dominated this sectional for the past four years — Martha's Vineyard and Hanover — have moved up a division. Another former Div. 3 South power, Coyle-Cassidy, joined the Vineyard and Hanover in Div. 2 this year. The path is even more clear since the teams in the Tri-Valley League will play in the North sectional this season. This has opened up the race and teams who usually did not have a fighting chance to contend for the title have visions of a championship. Blue Hills enhanced its regular-season schedule, as coach Steve Woods knew his Mayflower League schedule would not be enough. So he loaded up on games against Quincy, Bourne, Franklin and Westwood. Blue Hills also features the nation's all-time leading career scorer in senior center Ryan Moore, who had 81 points this season. Mike McSweeney has been a very productive left wing on Blue Hills' first line, while Rob Oullette has been solid in the net. Cohasset is another team with high aspirations as the Skippers won the South Shore League. The Skippers also beat previous SSL champion Hanover, now of the Patriot League. The top line of Greg Durkin, John Durkin and Greg Anderson was among the best in the SSL. Goaltender Dan Kinchela allowed 18 goals in 20 games. Bourne won the South Coast Conference and also filled its non-league schedule with quality opponents. Goalie Marc Jackson has been the key, and Jared Kent and Ryan Kent have provided the leadership and punch. Josh Connors is a key factor on the blue line. Bishop Feehan went through the Eastern Athletic Conference unbeaten and has to be considered a factor Chris Miller and Chris McGowan are talented scorers and goalie Matt Lopes can change the complexion of a game. Bishop Stang also plays in the very competitive Eastern Athletic Conference and could be a darkhorse. The Spartans have excellent team leadership in Mike Benson, Division 3 South seedings, schedule 1. Cohasset 2. Blue Hills 3. Wareham 4. Bishop Stang 5. Bourne 6. Abington/E Bridgewater 7. Norwell 8. Russ Childers and Dan Medeiros. A.J. Gordon has been steady in net. Norwell is a team that not many will want to face. The Clippers have some offensive firepower in Rob Himberg and Mike McAtteer, who were among the top five scorers in the SSL. Abington/East Bridgewater is one of several cooperative teams to find success. The Green Wave are in the tournament for the second year in a row. Jeremy Raulinatis is the leading scorer, while Bobby Fredericks has provided the intangibles. Goaltender Kevin O'Sullivan finished the season strong. Avon/Holbrook had an interesting year Mike Devlin, the Panthers' coach, took a leave of absence during the season but the team did not skip a beat. Devlin has returned, and he has three of the most promising sophomore forwards in the division in Sean Meany, Ed Kamel and Brian Lutz. Wareham will go as far as goaltender Travis Riggle will take it. The Vikings' netminder had a sparkling 2.10 GAA in the South Coast Conference, which is known for its wide-open hockey. Robert Canham led Wareham with 13 goals. There may not be anyone hotter entering the tournament than Jared McGuire of Harwk^i/Provincetovvn. McGuire scored seven goals in his team's final two games to help Harwich/Provincetown qualify on the final day. He will have to remain hot if the team is going to play a Cinderella role. Foxborough played a mostly Division 2 schedule, so despite finishing last in the Hockomock League, the Warriors are in the tournament because they did well against their Div. 3 opponents. This is the first time Foxboro has qualified since it re-instituted hockey three years ago. Jon Hixon and Chris Snyder are the leading scorers. Scituate also qualified by playing above .500 vs. Division 3 teams. Some of the Sailors' upper-division opponents included Duxbury, Hingham and Hanover. Somerset and Diman Regional round out the tournament field. Agawam rallied from a 3-6-1 record to qualify for the tourney on the final day of the season. The Brownies went 5-2-3 down the stretch, including a win over Chicopee and ties against Longmeadow and West Springfield. John Tisdell, Jeff Trauschke, Jeremy Melanson and Nick DePalma lead the offense. Belchertown scored 77 goals during the season, 41 of them by sophomores Eric Booth (23) and Kyle Vickers (18). After a slow start, the Orioles enter the tourney having won nine of their last 11. Brian Fox and Nick Sowa provide coach Jeff Cristina with senior leadership on the blue line. Defending state champion Fontbonne will try to overcome a strong field and make it two titles in a row. Lexington, Needham, Austin Prep, and Boston Latin all carry league championship banners into the tournament. Brookline, Matignon, Newton North, and Reading will also challenge for the crown. Two-time Catholic Central League scoring champion Kim MacElhaney of Austin Prep and Bay State League All-Star goalie Meghan O'Malley of Brookline head the list of talented performers in the tournament. Lexington (18-1-1) rolled to the Middlesex League title. Sophomores Beth Battin (4422-66) and Casey Harvell (10-14-24), senior Jenna Busa (13-29-42), and junior Meriah Magri (12-14-26) lead Lexington's potent attack. Junior goalie Natalie Memmola (1.83 GAA), senior Meghan McAlduff, and junior Jackie Schnare backbone a solid defense. Junior Kim MacElhaney (38-22-60) helped lead Austin Prep (17-1-2) to the Catholic Central League championship. MacElhaney had a five-goal performance in a win over Fontbonne. Freshman Katie Powers (15-20-35) and eighth-grader Courtney Sheary (15-16-31) also bring firepower to Austin Prep's lineup. Senior Caitlyn Dickinson and eighth-grader Lizzie Muse split the goaltending duties. Needham (18-2-0) finished first in the tough Bay State League Carey Division. Senior Nancy Gillis (23-10-33) and juniors Bevin Padgett (19-12-31) and Ailie Libby (13-16-29) lead Needham's well-balanced attack. Sophomore goaltender Danielle Jensen (1.30 GAA) and defensemen Valerie Atkinson and Lauren Goethals provide the spark in Needham's strong defense. Boston Latin (16-2-2), which lost to Dedham in a quadruple overtime classic in last year's Division 2 state title game, has moved up to Division 1. Juniors Kerry Brennan (22-17-39) and Aislinn Doherty (9-22-31) and freshman Catherine Foley (16-15-31) head Boston Latin's prolific Girls Division 1 seedings, schedule 1 . Lexington 18-1 2. Goaltender Meghan O'Malley, a three-year league all-star, will conclude an outstanding career in the tournament. Seniors Christine Clark, Leigh Farrington and Lauren O'Connor and junior Catherine Metzger are other players to watch. Matignon (13-3-2) has enjoyed a stellar season under first-year coach Mike Hogan. Senior Michelle Kane (26-12-38) and juniors Meghan Connors (13-17-30) and Lindsey Giuseppe (11 -12-23) lead the Warriors' prolific offense. Sophomore Brianna O'Brien and juniors Kerri Zizzo and Cheryl Mahoney team up with senior goalie Amanda Boucher (1.52 GAA) to form an excellent defensive unit. Fontbonne (13-4-0) raced to the Division 1 state title a year ago with an awesome 230 record. Senior Danielle Campbell, junior Melissa Belmonte, and sophomores Jamie and Kelli Doolin headline the Ducks' offensive attack. Junior goaltender Kristen Trapilo and defensemen Jill and Haley Slonina anchor the defense for the defending champions. Newton North (10-6-4) is in the Division 1 title chase after missing last year's tournament by a point. Freshman Anna Dahlberg, a Bay State League All-Star, had a terrific rookie season. Senior Jane Claflin is an all-star defenseman who has a solid all-around game. Junior all-star goaltender Amy Sparrow (2.11 GAA) was also a standout during the Tigers' run to the tournament. Reading (11-7-1) will look to Middlesex League All-Stars Kim DelSignore (25-1843), Kendall Junta (20-10-30) and Andrea Maillett (7-18-25) to power its offense in the tournament. All-stars Jill Graham and Krystle Murphy are Reading's top defensemen while senior goaltender Kelly Burke is solid in net. GARY SHUMAN Independent Newspaper Group ^^^H m^m ^. Dedham proved to be the ultimate survivor last year when it took two days and four overtimes to knock off defending champion Boston Latin for the state title. Latin has since moved on to Division 1, but it won't be easy to repeat. Canton earned the top seed after rolling to a 16-2-0 record and capturing the Dual-Metro 2 title. Coach Dan CalloWs Bulldogs featured two of the league's top three scorers in senior center Sarah Wetherbee (league-leading 2218-40) and sophomore forward Samantha Murphy. The defense is solid, with seniors Kelly Robinson and Janelb Hardiman. Dedham (17-3-0) geared up for its shot at a second straight title by winning the Bay State Conference's Herget Division. Sophomore Rachel Wilkes (20-12-32) was the top scorer while twin sister Jill, a sophomore, is an all-star on defense in front of freshman goalie Christina Sweeney (1.00 GAA). The Marauders have missed the contributions of senior Michelle Tesoro, who scored the winning goal against Latin in overtime last year but has missed much of the season with a knee injury. Wobum (13-4-1) is hoping for a longer stay than last year, when it lost to Boston Latin in a quarterfinal. The third-seeded Tanners have the firepower with two of the top scorers in the Middlesex League in sophomore Jessica Buttaro (30-28-58) and freshman Colleen Sanbom (40-11 51). Sanborn was moved up from defense earlier this season to join Buttaro on a potent line along with Kaitlyn O'Reilly. Wakefield (13-3-4) returns to the tournament for the second year in a row after a solid season in the Middlesex League. Sophomores Lee Mirasolo and Marie Spang, along with freshman Tara Petitto, have sparked the offenses. Senior forward Meghan Doyle, junior goalie Jessica Paiva, sophomore defenseman Meghan Quinn and freshman Nichole Coscia all were league all-stars along with Mirasolo. Lincoln-Sudbury (13-5-2) turned some heads this season by splitting a pair of games with Boston Latin on its way to sharing first place in Dual-Metro 1. Westwood (13-6-1) was runner-up to Canton in Dual-Metro 2 behind junior forward Caroline Donahue (15-20-35) and freshman Alison Jacobs (19-5-24). Freshman Julie Ffynn is another player to watch, with senior Christine Ryan the top defender in front of junior goalie Laura Jacobs. Milton (10-7-1) will be a team to watch after winning its their final five games, including a 1 -0 stunner over Brookline. Senior goalie Katie Frossard and junior forward Alex Lazar both were named to the Bay State Conference All-Star team. Gloucester (9-7-2) surged to the top of the North Cape Conference this season. Coach Dick MacNeil's team is led offensively by seniors Sarah Cunningham, Sasha Robinson-Neff, Amy Frithsen and Laura Amero, while freshman Whitney Thames just returned from a collarbone injury to provide a spark. Seniors Rachel Demuele, Ashley Morgan and Kristin Curley and juniors Meghan MacLeod and Amy Trefry are the top defensemen and junior Ashley Shoares is solid in net. Natick (9-7-4) grew up quickly under firstyear coach John Brown after posting just one win last season, finishing second to Dedham in the Bay State Herget. The team has been led by a pair of junior league allstars in defenseman Jen Yancey and forward Ashley Mabardy, with sophomore Meaghan Kacavich playing well in goal. Cambridge (9-9-2) was runner-up in the North Cape Conference behind Gloucester and had the league's leading scorer in sophomore forward Helen Sullivan (16-10-26). Junior Jamie Wendel is the anchor of the defense for the Falcons. Winchester (9-9-2) squeezed its way into the tournament with a late win over Gloucester after battling it out in the tough Middlesex League. The Sachems return an experienced but youthful cast led by senior forward Kelly Lannan and junior defenseman Carly Robinson (12-21 43). Kaitlyn Dillon and Jackie Graham are other players to watch.
