BUILD ONE YOURSELF PLACES WE HAVE BEEN: 1957 CYCLOPS 4TH JULY PARADES FATHER & SON SCRATCH BUILT PROJECT BOOKS CAN BE PURCHASED THROUGH AMAZON AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS STAN MOTT, MATT & GLENN THOMAS TO BRING OUT THE SMILES DAYTON & AULT PARK CONCOURS CAR SHOWS We built this one in 2010 in our garage using simple tools such as a circular saw, drill press, hand jigsaw, and a 110 mig welder. The rolled panels were accomplished using a homemade roller. The basic materials were 16-gage steel sheet and 3/4 inch plywood for the floor. It has a go kart drive system using a 6 1/2 HP engine. WWW.CYCLOPS2012.COM CYCLOPS History The Cyclops got its start when Stan Mott and Robert Cumbford dreamed up an ironic car with a design being as simple as possible. The theory was to take a sheet of steel, punch out the front and back windshields, roll the material and use these punched out pieces for the sides. One large headlight was installed and hence the name Cyclops came about. To add to the unique design, two leaf springs were reversed providing the suspension. Stan sketched the design and followed up with a story entitled “Beyond Belief”, which was published in Road and Track magazine’s March 1957 issue. Road and Track ran a total of 22 articles about the Cyclops between 1957 and 1992. Stan Mott in 1957 (The Original Cyclops) Over one cold Detroit winter in 1956, Stan Mott built the first Cyclops. The body was made of steel, painted yellow, and had a large single headlight. It was put on display at the Detroit Automobile show that year. The above photograph is Stan, with that original Cyclops, in front of Road and Track’s California office. Stan’s original Cyclops location is unknown. On the Internet one can read of people who have built them in the past and their construction. Today (Apr. 2015) there are only 9 running ones known to exist. It seems through the years, the constant items of a Cyclops are the shape and the single large headlight. ~ TO SEE MORE ~ WWW.CYCLOPS2012.COM Stan Mott in 2012 (In Glenn’s & Matt’s Cyclops)
