People in the communities we serve recognized the importance of having a modern, top quality healthcare facility and stepped up to make it happen.” ÎÎ 100% of your gift goes to its intended purpose: the Foundation’s expenses are completely underwritten by operating expenses of Community Memorial Healthcenter. ÎÎ Community Memorial Healthcenter The CMH Capital Campaign began raising funds for its $19 million expansion project almost two years ago. The expansion project includes four phases, with construction of a radiation therapy center as the first phase. The additional phases of the project include relocation and expansion of the laboratory (which is expected to begin this spring), followed by expansion of the radiology department. Construction of a new surgery center is the final phase which hospital officials are hopeful can begin in 2014. Foundation is a fully qualified charity under IRS Section 501(c)3. All donations are tax deductible within Federal guidelines. ÎÎ Funds are carefully managed and allocated by our Foundation Board of Directors, a group of highly respected business and community leaders. The Quest The Quest newsletter is published monthly and is designed to keep our community friends up-to-date on the happenings of Community Memorial Healthcenter Foundation. Faye Matthews, CMHF Vice President In October of last year, CMH announced that it had met and exceeded its $6 million Capital Campaign Goal benefiting its $19 million expansion project. Faye Matthews, CMH Foundation Vice President, reported that donations and pledges have been made by 700 donors totaling just over $ 6,118,000. Our Mission To build continuing support for Community Memorial Healthcenter through philanthropy, stewardship and community education. Community Memorial Healthcenter Foundation • (434) 774-2575 email: [email protected] A number of significant gifts were made in support of the expansion project. The two largest individual donors to the project were Sylvia and William (Bill) Solari of Lake Gaston who in April of 2011 gave a lead gift of $1 million for the radiation therapy center, and the Hendrick Family, Rick and Linda Hendrick and Ms. Cathy Hendrick, who announced a $2 million gift at the official campaign kickoff in September of 2011. Funding from the Tobacco Commission in the amount of $500,000 was also a significant boost to the campaign. The Solari Radiation Therapy Facility, named in recognition of the generous gift from the Solaris, is currently under construction and is expected to open in the summer of 2013. CMH is partnering with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Massey Cancer Center to provide oncology care in the Southern Virginia region. Adding radiation therapy to the existing medical oncology will provide the region access to comprehensive cancer care. Scott Burnette, President and CEO, stated, “The success of the campaign which allowed CMH to move forward with its expansion plans is a reflection of our community’s long tradition of supporting their hospital. We are so very thankful to the many individuals and organizations that supported this campaign. Their gifts represent significant investments in healthcare for the region.” Construction of The Solari Radiation Therapy Center, the first and only radiation therapy facility in Southern Virginia, is underway and is expected to open this summer. message from the CEO/President The Quest...February 2013 J The Quest...February 2013 Donors Making A Difference..........One Gift At A Time anuary is the beginning of a new year with us setting new goals and expectations as individuals and it is also a time to reflect on the past year’s accomplishments. For CMH, January is the middle of its fiscal year, but we are also beginning to plan and set goals for next year. CMH has had a year of exciting news and accomplishments but it has also been a year of many challenges. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank all the physicians, staff, volunteers, donors, patients and their families for the continued support that you give to CMH. Without each and every one of you, our hospital would not be where it is today--a strong, community hospital that provides high quality care in a caring environment. CMH is so very fortunate to have such strong philanthropic support. The success of our fundraising efforts reveals the commitment that you give to your community hospital. In October, the Capital Campaign Cabinet announced that our campaign had exceeded its $6 million fundraising goal for the $19 million expansion program. In fact, donors continue to make new gifts in support of the campaign bringing the total amount raised to date $6,118,000 (including pledges)! The first phase of the expansion project, construction of the Solari Radiation Therapy Center, is coming along nicely and we expect the facility to open midyear. This facility, a joint venture with VCU Massey Cancer Center, will provide comprehensive cancer care to patients in this region right here at CMH. Your support of CMH has helped make this possible. We will soon be starting phase II of the expansion project, which is relocation and expansion of the laboratory. Our physicians and staff are committed to providing the highest quality care to our patients. I am proud of the recognitions and achievements that CMH received last year which are a testament to the CMH teamwork in our ongoing efforts to be a national leader in health care. More details on these accomplishments can be found in our latest annual report by going to www.cmh-sh. org/content/Publications.htm. The past two years have been most challenging operationally, especially in light of the local economy’s impact on Healthcenter utilization and continued reductions in reimbursement at the national level. However, CMH continues to be a strong hospital with a solid balance sheet , good cash reserves and almost no debt. And of course the wonderful philanthropic support that we receive allows us to move forward with expansions. Last year we announced that the CMH Board had begun an assessment process to explore potential affiliation with another health care system. The first step in this process was engaging Navigant Consulting, Inc., one of the nation’s leading healthcare consulting firms, to conduct an independent assessment of CMH’s strategic, financial, and operational position. A Steering Committee composed of Board members was formed to lead the assessment process. In addition, both a Community Advisory Committee of leaders from all CMH service areas as well as a CMH employee advisory group were formed to give input and perspectives about possible affiliation and the future direction of CMH. The Steering Committee initially evaluated eight potential corporate partners. They have been working to narrow the field to 2-3 potential partners with the intent of engaging the final few in more indepth discussions on how they would propose to enhance medical services in this region. The process continues on schedule and I expect the Board to complete its assessment by late spring and make a decision as to whether or not CMH should consider an affiliation sometime this summer. Our Board of Directors are dedicated to making sound and prudent decisions that will position CMH to best meet the healthcare needs of the people of our region now and into the future. We will keep the community updated in the process. The healthcare industry is a dynamically changing environment and CMH, as with hospitals across the nation, has to make changes in operations and become more efficient and productive. CMH benchmarks with other similar hospitals in terms of standards of care, staffing, and best practices in its clinical areas so that we can achieve improvements. While the next year is not without challenges, there are many opportunities for CMH and with your continued support we will advance health care for this community. Thank you for your support of CMH. Sincerely, W. CMH Foundation 434l774l2575 3 The Quest...February 2013 Thank You for Supporting Our Tree of Love Scholarship Program On behalf of the Community Memorial Healthcenter Auxiliary I would like to say “Thank You” to all the many people who contributed to the “Tree of Love”, Elizabeth T. Moseley Scholarship Fund, during the past year. The “Tree of Love” program was started in 1983 to help the nurses further their education. This program has been ongoing for 29 years and has given out over 300 scholarships to nurses. Contributions received in 2012 totaled $4,730.00 and are very much appreciated. Since July 2012, twelve scholarships have been awarded to CMH nurses by the Auxiliary. In January 2013, three more were awarded bringing the total so far to fifteen. Without the help and support from the community this would not have been possible. Contributions may be made in honor or memory of loved ones all during the year and in December we have a program honoring those who received scholarships due to the generosity and support of the community. Again “Thanks” so much. Sincerely, Charlotte G. Clark, Chairman “Tree of Love” and Scholarship Committee ....One Gift At A Time Donors Making A Difference..........One Gift At A Time CMH ’s report to the community: “Community People.
