Semican is a 25 year old privately owned Canadian company that markets a full line of
farm seeds and horse products to dealers in the USA and Canada.
Semican has set the standard for horse oats and supporting product in the northeast
with their cereal breeding program and their state of the art cleaning process for grains.

A specialised team operates the research farm. Developing new varieties of cereal and
soybean, these specialists offer the partners of Semican the expertise to evaluate future
varieties for producers. The research division of Semican is the starting point for new
markets that will ensure the success of a new crop.
The research team is composed of two cereal breeders with a team of technicians.
The research team also provides support to the sales division for the quality control of
various programs of marketing and production.

Semican straw pellets bedding is made from chopped straw.
● Lightly mist with water a freshly dressed up stall, to weaken the core strength of the
pellet and boost its absorption power.
● Replace as you scoop out.
Unpalatable
Research has proven that horses have no interest in eating the bedding due to the
natural additive. This, even if they have been fasting and exposed to fresh new bedding.
Safe
Zero impact on the horse’s health. Research trials have shown that our straw pellets are less
dusty than wood shaving and have no adverse effects on the horses respiratory track.
Performance
• Semican’s straw pellets have a mass weight of 0.825g/ml which is superior to the regular straw or wood shavings at 0.129g/ml. This greatly reduces the storage space needed for
bedding.
• Less dusty than wood shavings.
• In comparison of wood shavings in the same thickness, it offers a more comfortable mat.
• When horses lay down, it easily stays in place and it doesn’t move like wood shavings, so
horses won’t have a bare floor.
• Semican’s straw pellets absorb 3 times it’s weight in liquid, unlike wood shavings.
• Additive is incorporated to reduce consumption of the bedding.
• It changes color when soiled so you can easily see it, unlike wood shavings.
• This bedding requires 37% less time to clean up than wood shavings.
• When cleaning up, there is a 37.5% added savings for the bedding in comparison with wood shavings.
• No odour from ammonia during the clean up contrary to wood shavings.
Maintenance
• Remove soiled lumps from the bedding with a pitchfork, not a shovel.
• When adding more straw pellets, you should wet it again to activate the expansion.
• Remove and replace it all between 2 to 6 weeks of usage or just for cleanliness.

Racing accomplishments:
He finished his full year of riding in 1977 by riding Canadian horse of the year Lalezane,
like he did riding an ex claimer name Crafty Lace to horse of the year in his first full year of riding 1962.
In 1965 he won the Preakness aboard Tom Rolfe.
In 1970, He was honored to meet Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2 when she presented him with
the winning trophy for the Manitoba Centennial Derby, a race he won with the Canadian filly FANFRELUCHE who also was voted horse of the
year 1970.
In 1970 he also became the only jocky to win the HIALEAH TURF SERIES (The Palm Beach,
Bourgainvilla and Hialeah Turf Cup)
aboard the grass horse Vent Du Nord.
In 1972 he rode Riva Ridge to victories in the
KY. Derby and the Belmont Stakes. By winning the KY Derby, Preakness and Belmont stakes with Secretariat in 1973, he became the first
jockey in 71 years to win back to back KY Derbies
and the only jockey to win five of six consecutive Triple Crown races.
In 1973, Ron won the most coveted prize in racing when, as the regular jockey for Secretariat, he became
the first jockey in 25 years to win America’s Triple Crown. To this day, Secretariat is still considered by
many to be the greatest thoroughbred of all times.
In his short career he won over 3000 races and many major Stakes, the most notables being:
2 Canadian Championships, 2 Massachussett Handicap, 2 Laurel Futurity Stakes, 2 Garden State Stakes,
2 Man O’War Stakes, 2 Suburban Handicaps, 2 Alabama Stakes.
He also won the Jockey Club Gold Cup - Malboro Cup - Hawthorne Gold Cup - Black Eyed Susan - KY. Oaks
- Monmouth Oaks - Coaching Club American Oaks - Blue Grass – Traveers – Selima – Sorority - Alcibiade
- Arlington Washington Lassie - Wood Memorial - Hopeful - 2 Champagne Stakes – Arlington Invitational –
