AKF Shining A Light on Families of the Wakhan Corridor
Shining a Light on Families of the Wakhan Corridor
In Afghanistan’s Wakhan region, remoteness made electricity a distant dream.
The two villages worked together on canal construction for the hydropower plant.
Plant construction initially required outside skills, but created new jobs locally.
Stringing the electric lines brought two communities much more than light bulbs.
After the lights went on, family life continues after nightfall.
Clinics with electricity gained more options for treatment and access to support services.
Schools with electricity teach children in a healthier environment and can introduce computers.
