There are myriad great opportunities and resources available on this campus. Though the campus itself is vast, I love how close-knit the Davis community is. The university not only offers a premiere education taught by world-class faculty, but also the campus itself strives to transform lives with innovative thinkers and doers. At UC Davis, I have met some of my best friends and some incredible mentors. As an out-of-state student, my choice to come to UC Davis may have been a big one, but it has also been one of my best decisions yet. Through UC Davis, I even secured a full-time graphic design position for after graduation. I am at UC Davis to challenge myself mentally and socially. In the past year, I have learned about my capabilities to handle school, social life and hobbies, thanks to the guidance of colleagues and professors. Opportunity is everywhere at UC Davis. Opportunity to meet new and interesting people, to learn about advances in society and most importantly, to try new activities. When I came to UC Davis, I knew I wanted to find an internship right away. The amount of jobs available on campus is endless, so finding the right one is easy. 4th Year, Communication Major This bike-friendly college town provides everything a student could want out of a well-balanced college experience! I strongly encourage students to get involved with student clubs, study abroad and explore their passions with multiple work experiences! College is your playground, Aggies! What do you want to take away from your college experience? GO AGS! 4th Year, Design Major I came for a quality education, as well as a chance to compete on the gymnastics team for Davis. Due to injuries, I had to quit, but I’ve been able to get involved in so many other areas on campus. You can always find me around campus, studying at my favorite spots, working, cheering on my Aggies, or even playing a few games of flag football on the grass! 2nd Year, Exercise Biology Major I am a second year and I am using college as a chance to explore my career path. You can catch me taking pictures of various student events around campus or catch me trying to take pictures of squirrels because UC Davis students really like squirrels. 3 /////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Yiyuan “Sam” Tu 1st Year Major: Applied Physics Hometown: Guangzhou, China What are you involved with? I’m on the swimming club sport team, which competes against other colleges. We recently competed against UCLA. And I like to work out regularly at the Activities and Recreation Center. Why did you choose UC Davis? It’s more like UC Davis chose me because I didn’t have a chance to visit the campus before I came here. The campus is beautiful, and I’ve found it easy to make friends. What resources do you find helpful? Even in classes, you can get to know the professors. For instance, when I took Physics 9B, a large lecture class, I went to the professor’s office hours regularly, and he definitely got to know me. We had many insightful conversations. How has your undergraduate experience been? UC Davis is an awesome school. The environment is ideal for studying and there are so many activities to choose from. 4 2nd Year Major: Animal Science Hometown: Carpinteria, Calif. What are you involved with? I am a hammerthrower on the UC Davis Track and Field team and a member of Athletes in Action, a fellowship group of Christian athletes. I also volunteer with the animal science program, which has given me an opportunity to assist in the birth of various animals. Why did you choose UC Davis? I chose UC Davis for the animal science program because it’s one of the best. And when I visited, I fell in love with the campus; the people are so nice, and I knew I didn’t want to go anywhere else. What do you want to do before you graduate? I’d like to be an intern at one of the animal facilities on campus through the Barn Residency Program and live at one of the nine animal facilities. I want to attend Picnic Day because it sounds fun to people-watch and see what everyone has produced for the event. What is your favorite quote? “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 /////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Kelsey Drain 5 /////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Marina Brown 3rd Year Major: International Relations and Russian Hometown: Stockton, Calif. What are you involved with? I am in Phi Sigma Pi national honor fraternity, Prytanean women’s honor society, and I’m an alumna of the University of California, Sacramento Center, program. Why did you choose UC Davis? I fell in love with this bike-friendly town upon touring UC Davis! Aside from having programs for Russian and international relations, it is safe and a beautiful campus close to home. What is your favorite place to study? I like to study at the Art Lounge, second floor of the Memorial Union. I also enjoy getting work done on the fourth floor of Kerr, the IR study lounge. It’s motivating to see distinguished students, awards and books lined up against the wall. What was your favorite memory from freshman year? My favorite memory is biking around the whole campus at night when it got noisy and distracting at the dorms. I find it peaceful to step outside when no one is around. 6 3rd Year Major: Computer Science and Engineering Hometown: San Ramon, Calif. What are you involved with? I belong to the Computer Science Club as a member of the tutoring committee, pragmatic programming committee, and game development committee. I am also an active member of the Badminton Club and Koinonia, a Christian fellowship on campus. Why did you choose UC Davis? I chose Davis because a lot of the computer science professors are researching topics I’m interested in. What are your passions? I have a passion for developing software tools that people can use to simplify their lives. What is your life motto? “And those who were dancing were thought to be insane by those who cannot hear the music.” To follow my passions and dreams no matter what others say. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Timothy Tong 7 /////////////////////////////////////////////////////// R uby Baltazar 4th Year Major: Civil Engineering Hometown: Watsonville, Calif. What are you involved with? I served as the treasurer for the UC Davis Chicano and Latino Engineers and Scientists Society. Why did you choose UC Davis? I chose UC Davis because it is known to have toprated academic programs, including its engineering school. I found the UC Davis community to be diverse, friendly and welcoming. What resources did you find helpful? I was fortunate to have my first community exposure through the Special Transitional Enrichment Program (STEP), which allows students to experience campus life and prepares them for their first year at UC Davis. How has your undergraduate experience been? My experience as an undergraduate has been amazing. I made new friends every quarter and always found resources available to me that helped out with my classes. 8 Student Clubs and Organizations Get involved and be active!
