Welcome to the 126th
Aitkin
County Fair
Please keep this book handy as it contains information on how to make open class entries and gives
a schedule of the planned activities for this year’s fair.
Days and times for registering and bringing entries in are listed in the Schedule of Events
section. Please read the additional instructions for what is required in a particular
department/class.
New this year: We are asking all persons with 10 entries or more (especially in the Home
Activities areas) to preregister. This may be accomplished by registering using the on-line web
site; by Email at [email protected]; or if you do not have a computer, by using the entry
form found in this book and mailing it in. If entering by Email, be sure to include your name,
address, phone number, e-mail address along with the proper department, division and classes for
each item. Pre-registration begins June 1.
On-line Registration for ALL Open class entries at the website will be available from June 1
through July 1. Simply go to the web site: http://aitkin.fairmanager.com and create your own
account with your own password to begin entering your open class entries. Reminder: passwords
are only good for one year. New ones must be created every year. Only one (1) entry per class is
allowed with the exception of the Poultry and Rabbits Departments. Dairy Steers under 2 yrs are
to be entered in Division 117. You may go back to your account anytime to add additional items. If
there are any deletions, you may either notify us at [email protected] or
[email protected] or tell us about them on entry day so that our records are correct. All
exhibitors who pre-register will be entered in a drawing for two (2) passes to the Grandstand
Event of their choice. The winner may pick up the passes when he/she brings in his/her entries.
Cost to enter into Open Class is $1.00/entry - or – a supporting annual membership in the
Agricultural Society of Aitkin County that includes FREE unlimited entries. There are two
types of membership: the Single membership - $3.00 and the Family membership that includes
husband/wife, parent/guardian and children 18 yrs and younger - $5.00. Family Farms must be
registered with a Family Membership and the exhibitor number will be under the Family Farm. All
premium checks will be made out to the Family Farm. Should member/members of the Farm
Family wish to exhibit under their own name, they must have their own separate exhibitor
number. However, if they meet the criteria for the Family membership, the membership number
of the Family Farm may be used with no additional cost; if not, they can purchase a single
membership or pay the $1.00/entry fee.
Same day entry will also remain available. Open Class Home Activities entry day is Tuesday, July
5, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. All Open Class Horses and Livestock entries, not preregistered, must be
registered and brought in on Wednesday, July 6.
Enjoy your fair!

TIPS FOR ENTERING ITEMS
1. Read the exhibit book for entering ideas and Department rules.
2. Preregister open class entries if there are more than 10 items.
Preregistering can be on-line at http://aitkin.fairmanager.com; by Email at
[email protected]; or if you do not have a computer, by using the
entry form found in this book and mailing it in. If entering by E-mail, be
sure to include your name, address, phone, e-mail address along with the
proper department, division and classes for your items. Preregistration
begins June 1 and ends July 1.
3. Avoiding the times of 8:00 am – 10:00am, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, and 4:15pm –
5:00 pm may lessen the time spent in lines for same day entries.
4. If you are not sure which department/division and class to place your entry,
someone will be available on Tuesday to help you make the decision. You
may enter as many classes as you wish, but remember ONLY ONE item per
class. A set is considered one item.
5. Make sure each project is clean and presentable. Fingerprints or dirt marks
are reasons for deductions or disqualifications.
6. Entry day for Open Class Home Activities is Tuesday, July 5. Entries must be
in place by 5:15 pm. All entries must remain on display from Tuesday, July 5
until Saturday, July 9, at 5:00 pm. NO EXCEPTIONS. They may be picked up
on Saturday between 5:00 and 7:00 pm. If you cannot pickup your entries,
please make arrangements for someone else to do so.

DEPARTMENT 19 – VEGETABLES
Gars Aarness - Superintendent
To assist the gardener in selecting and preparing vegetables for
exhibit, the following suggestions are made:
BEETS, CARROTS, PARSNIPS, TURNIPS, RUTABAGAS
Root crops should be mature but not over grown, pithy or coarse in
texture. Tops trimmed off 1 1/4” above the crown. Side roots
trimmed off but not the tap root. Clean by brushing.
h
37 h
www.aitkincountyfair.org
BROCCOLI-Heads should be dark or purplish green and compact.
Avoid yellow flowers in head. Stems cut about 5” from top of head.
CABBAGE-Stems cut about 1/2” below the head. Remove blemished or broken leaves. Leave few wrapper leaves.
CAULIFLOWER-Heads should be white, compact and free of
small leaves and ricy texture. Stems cut so as to leave 4 to 6 leaves.
Outer leaves trimmed to 1 -2” above the white head. Use soft bristled brush to remove dirt from head.
CELERY: Remove roots of stalk and trim butt to form a triangle
for pyramid. Trim diseased and broken leaves on outside until color
is uniform.
CUCUMBERS: Pickling select fruits 3-5” long. Specimens should
be same stage of maturity and uniform in size, shape and color.
Slicers-select fruits that are straight, dark green and 6-10” long.
They should be uniform in size, shape and color. Leave stems
attached. Soft brush clean.
EGGPLANT: Uniform in color and free from bronzing and greening. Stem should be left on.
KOHLRABI: Roots removed just below the ball. Remove all but
the center 4-6 leaves. Select specimens that are uniform, medium
size and not hard or woody. Skin should be easily punctured by
thumbnail. They should be clean but not washed.
MUSKMELON: Select fruit that separate easily from the vine.
Melons should be mature but not overripe.
ONIONS: Have specimens mature and thoroughly cured. The neck
should be small. Do not peel to give a slick appearance. Only such
outer scales that are broken or discolored should be removed. Small
basal roots should be left intact but trimmed to a uniform length of
1/2”. Wipe or brush but do not wash. Cut tops 1 to 1-1/2 inches long.
PEAS: Select bright green well filled with seeds, the best eating
stage. Do not wash as bloom should be preserved.
PEPPERS: Stem should be left 1/2 -1” long.
RADISHES: Tap root cut 1/2” and tops cut to 1/2”.
RHUBARB: Select stalks that are straight, uniform and unblemished. Stalks should be pulled from the plant, not cut. Cut off blade
leaf 2” above the stalk.
SNAP BEANS: Harvest before constrictions appear between
seeds, when seeds are about half grown. Pods should be wiped clean
but not washed. Leave stems attached.
SUMMER SQUASH: Select small size fruit when rind is soft and
easily punctured with thumbnail. Leave about 1/2” of stem and wipe
fruits clean.
TABLE ONIONS: Peeled roots, trimmed tops, cut uniform 6-8”.
TOMATOES: Uniform size, shape and color. Leave 1/2” stem on.
Fruits should be uniformly shaped and free of cracks and blemishes.
WATERMELONS: Select fruit that are mature but not overripe.
Leave 1 inch of stem on.

Century
Farms
The Century Farm recognition
program, sponsored by the Minnesota State Fair and
the Minnesota Farm Bureau, recognizes farms that have
been in continuous ownership by a family for 100 years or
more. Since the program began in 1976, over 6,000
Minnesota farms have been recognized. Each year, Century Farm recipients receive an outdoor sign designating the farm as a “Century Farm” and a certificate signed by the Governor of Minnesota and the president of
the State Fair.

Did You Know?
How can you tell if an
egg is fresh or hard
boiled? Just spin the
egg. If it wobbles, it’s
raw. If it spins easily,
it’s hard boiled. A
fresh egg will sink in
water, a stale one will
float.
