Occasionally, consumers may offer for exchange tanks that should not be
accepted because of their condition. How do you tell if a tank is unacceptable
or non-compliant? This document offers several guidelines.
1
Missing collar.
5
Valve is missing.
Multiple valve openings.
CHECK THE
FOOT RING
Foot rings keep cylinders in
the correct upright position.
Foot rings that are rusted
through or broken can cut
a customer, damage a
vehicle while transporting
the cylinder, or detract from
the appeal of the product.
Damaged foot ring.
6
Deep gouges in tank.
Deep dent in tank.
Dent is longer than 3”.
CHECK FOR
EXCESSIVE
RUST
Tanks with light
surface corrosion are
acceptable as long
as the integrity of the
metal is not seriously
affected. One rule
of thumb - If tank
surface is rough, the
rust has probably hurt
the metal.
Collar too tall.
CHECK THE
VALVE
Tanks without valves
have been exposed
to outside air and
moisture, so they are
unacceptable. Tanks with
multiple openings are
also unacceptable.
3
Unacceptable collar – bent below handwheel.
CHECK THE
TANK BODY
The body of the tank
must be intact, without
significant dents, cuts,
gouges, or holes. If a
tank has any dent on
the weld seam or a
dent longer than 3,”
it is unacceptable.
CHECK THE
COLLAR
Collars are designed to
protect the valve, and
also function as a handle.
Collars must be in place,
not bent below the
handwheel, with all welds
intact. Tank collars must
also be about 4” in height
so they will fit into displays.
2
4
Tank has excessive rust and heavy
pitting - unacceptable.
Rust is present, but integrity of the metal
has not been affected.
CHECK
TYPE AND
SIZE OF
TANK
Blue Rhino accepts
only standard-size
propane gas grill tanks.
Smaller or larger tanks,
and tanks designed
for use with other
gases, such as helium,
are non-compliant
because they are
not reusable.
NON-COMPLIANT tanks.
