Corvette Chili Challenge
3-18-2012
Unseasonably warm weather brought several dozen Corvettes to Suburban’s
Chili Challenge at Jimmy’s Food & Drink in Vadnais Heights on Sunday, March
18, including Debbie’s and Tim Monahan’s. Bob T. and Bonnie and Kathy W. also
attended and entered their chili recipes. Bob once again took second place in the
mystery chili category. Bob and Tim also won a couple of raffle prizes.

2012 Chili Challenge
Well the 2012 Corvette Chili Challenge is over and from the comments I received it was the best yet!! This year we
had approximately 133 registered people attending from Classic Corvettes of Minnesota; Corvettes of Minnesota,
Suburban Corvette Club of Minnesota, NCRS, Minnesota Renegades, Crow River Corvettes, VetteAction.com and FOM
and independent Corvette owners.
This year’s winners are:
Best Spicy Chili: 1. Classic Corvettes of Minnesota 2. Phil & Dee Brunt (SCCM) 3. Bob Svacina (CCOM)
Best Mystery Chili: 1. Robert Hall (TPIS) 2. Bob Tshida (CRCC) 3. Bill Hoxmeier (COM)
Best Overall Chili: 1. Minnesota Renegades 2. (TIE) Classic Corvettes of Minnesota and Rick Z. of NCRS
Many, many thanks to Suburban Corvettes, Classic Corvettes, Corvettes of Minnesota, National Corvette Restorers
Society (NCRS-Local Chapter) and the Minnesota Renegades for their monetary contributions to the door prizes.
Much appreciation to our friends and sponsors who contributed prizes: Boos Performance-John Boos; Wild ThreadsSuzanne McWilliams; Doug Rippie Motorsports-Randy Rippie; VetteAction.com; Corvette Specialties-Mike;
Motorbooks-Susan Koski; Michele Scholtz and Jan and Shawn Hanna. Nearly everyone in attendance won at least one
prize. 180 prizes were given away. Boos Performance (John Boos) was awarded our Vendor of the Year Award. (Toot
Your Own Horn!) Congratulations John! TPIS, Jim Hall donated the accoutrements for eating, crackers, tableware,
cheese, etc. Thank you all so much for your generosity.
This year we had an announcement that we are aligning ourselves with a charity, Camp Anokijig through Dan Binks
(Crew Chief) of the Pratt & Miller Corvette Racing Team. Through Raffle tickets sales and a silent auction of racing
memorabilia from Pratt & Miller, we were able to donate over $1,000.00 to our new charity. Pratt & Miller is on board
for next year and we may have more racing partners joining us. Stay tuned.
Many thanks to Jimmy’s for providing us with a banquet room, tables and outlets to plug in our crock pots. And let’s
not forget that cash bar to help us cool down from some hot chili. Jimmy’s wait staff was, again, friendly, helpful and
professional. Thank you Mary and the Crew at Jimmy’s, you are awesome.
Huge thanks to our professional and personable Chili Challenge volunteer team. Without these fine folks the event
would not run like a clock! These people deserve creds: Brian & Alvera Zenisek; Vern and Candy De Hoop; Gail
Borstelman, Glenn & Linda Franke; Jack Strait & Susan Koski; Len & Sandy Geronomie; Sue Bohrer; and Sharon Koolmo.
We had some terrific prizes this year and thanks to Wade Barisoff for his purchasing judgment and efforts. Wade
also did an awesome job with the emcee and prize presentation. Big Fun!! Wade, your good humor and smooth patient
vibe really helped the event. We appreciate you! And your new bride, Tia too!! Finally, thanks to my wonderful wife
Janet Hanna for all her decorating ideas, her constant organization and whipping me into shape. Jan we are so happy
you are back with us in such good shape, you are an amazing person!
This year we fed 133 people 15 different chili’s, gave away over 180 door prizes, awarded 3 embroidered aprons, a
Chili Challenge trophy and 9 cash prizes all in 3.5 hours. Wow! Superb job to all who helped this event continue its
history of FUN!!!
Thanks to everyone who attended, we hope you had fun and look forward to seeing you all next year for the 2013 Chili
Challenge.
Sincerely, Shawn Hanna, Chairman

C4 Pink Corvette Aims to Raise Breast Cancer
Awareness
If you happen to see a pink 1984 Corvette rolling down the road in the Ohio area in the next few
months, it's probably the Pink Vette that aims to raise at least $20,000 for the Meadville Medical
Center's Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute.
A couple of car guys Brian Bair of Bair's Corvettes in Linesville and Dave Gray of Smith Gray Buick
GMC in Vernon Township and some friends have been restoring the Corvette over the past few
months, inside and out, including a paint job in the traditional shade of pink that's come to symbolize
the breast cancer awareness movement across the nation.
As if the unique paint job isn't enough to attract attention, organizers are letting the thousands of
people who see the car to sign their names on it when they make a donation. TV star Jay Leno has
already autographed the air cleaner cover after it was mailed to his studio in LA.
The car will debut in public at the Barco Institute on May 4 as the Corvette begins cruisin' for the cure,
the first of many stops around the area through next year.
The goal now is to raise at least $20,000 through those fund-raising events, and they also plan to
auction off the PinkVette late next year to raise even more money.
All the proceeds will go to the Institute to buy and maintain a special vehicle to transport Institute
patients and their families from around the region who don't have a way to the center for their
appointments.
“It’s an off-the-wall project,” Bair admits, but thanks to the efforts of more than 100 sponsors and
volunteers, “it’s all coming together.”
You can find out more about the car and Cruisin’ for the Cure at www.PinkVette.net.

Corvette concept cars: Room for the whole family
By Bruce Troxell – National Corvette Examiner
The Corvette Impala was exhibited at the 1956 GM Motorama. GM photo.
Today the character of the Corvette is well defined as a 2-seat, high performance sports car with enough bells and
whistles to satisfy the most discriminating owner. In its early years, however, the designers at General Motors
experimented with versions of the Corvette that could accommodate the whole family. Design exercises such as
the Nomad, the Impala and the 2+2 Sting Ray were GM’s way of testing the waters to see if Corvette’s market
could be expanded.
