Why You
Really Need
Winter
Tires
Though anti-lock brakes, traction control and vehicle
stability systems help make it easier to utilize a tire’s full
potential, none of these systems actually provide more traction.
They are only able to assist with vehicle acceleration, braking
and cornering capacity based on the traction provided by its tires.
Anti-lock brake systems help prevent
sliding tires by selectively releasing pressure
to pump the brakes. While anti-lock brake
systems help maintain steering control and
directional stability, stopping distances may
be longer in winter conditions.
Traction control helps prevent spinning
tires by reducing the engine’s power and/
or applying the brakes. Traction control also
helps maintain directional stability, but
acceleration may be slower.

Vehicle stability systems help maintain control by sensing when a
vehicle deviates from the intended course (determined by speed, cornering, and steering inputs) and selectively braking individual wheels and/or
reducing engine power. Unfortunately, none of these systems can rewrite
the laws of physics or exceed the capabilities of the vehicle’s tires.
Four-wheel drive cars, SUVs and light trucks are often purchased
because their drive lines make winter driving easier by dividing the
engine’s power between more tires to provide an advantage when
accelerating on slippery roads. Doubling the driving wheels virtually
doubles the acceleration on slippery surfaces.
However, four-wheel drive doesn’t offer any
unique advantage when the vehicle has to
stop or turn since every vehicle uses all of its
tires to provide braking and cornering traction.
Additionally, four-wheel drive vehicles typically
weigh more than their two-wheel drive counterparts, so bringing them to a stop or turning
a corner will take more space if additional
traction from winter tires is not available.
Whether your vehicle has anti-lock brakes,
traction control, a vehicle stability system or
four-wheel drive, it is your tires that provide the real traction. Obviously,
the more traction these systems have to work with the better.
Since most vehicles (including light trucks) are originally equipped with
all-season tires, optimizing these systems’ capabilities on snow and ice
requires installing winter tires.

Wintertime presents the most challenging road conditions drivers typically face. In addition
to the reduced hours of daylight and colder temperatures, drivers must combat wet, slushy,
snow- and ice-covered roads. And whether they’re driving two-wheel or all-wheel drive
vehicles, we’ve found it takes the right tires to enhance winter traction.
While many new vehicles are equipped with anti-lock brakes, traction control and dynamic
stability systems that help them utilize more of their tires’ potential, we’ve learned these
systems are only capable of trying to limit the vehicle’s acceleration, braking and cornering
to the traction provided by the tires.

What is the most challenging condition you encounter during bad winter weather?
For most drivers it’s the glare ice found at a slick intersection or out on the highway.
The smooth ice of a hockey rink replicates the packed snow and polished ice often
encountered at busy intersections during winter months, and allows us to compare
traction when driving conditions are at their worst.
To drive in winter weather you must first get your vehicle moving. We measured
acceleration traction by recording the time needed to accelerate 60 feet while using
the vehicle’s traction control system to help the driver maximize the tire’s traction. All
four of the Studless Ice and Snow winter tires we tested easily got the vehicle rolling
on the slippery surface. And as the tire manufacturers continue to improve winter tire
technology, we found three tires in a virtual tie for first place.

Acceleration runs began with each car’s rear tires lined up on the
goal line of the ice rink. We then measured how much time it took for
each car to cover the final 60 feet to the center of the rink as the car
accelerated as fast as its tires and traction control would allow. More
tire traction produces quicker 60-foot times.
Once you get your vehicle moving, being able to stop becomes just as important.
So we also measured the distance required to stop on the ice from 10 mph, using
the vehicle’s Antilock Braking System. Our results mirror what we found in acceleration, with three tires sharing nearly identical stopping distances.

Wintertime driving isn’t all about trudging
through deep snow or slipping on ice.
There are plenty of miles spent driving on
clear roads, too. So we also put the group of
Studless Ice and Snow winter tires through
our Real World Road Ride to experience their
on-road manners.
Our team found the handling of the X-Ice Xi2
and ExtremeWinterContact to be the most
responsive, feeling almost like an all-season
tire. The Blizzak WS70 provided stable handling, but didn’t have the responsiveness of
the ExtremeWinterContact or X-Ice Xi2, while
the Graspic DS-3 felt a little less precise than
the other three.
All of our Studless Ice and Snow winter tire
candidates feature aggressive tread patterns
designed to aid snow traction. And coming
as no surprise, all produced somewhat more
tread noise than a typical all-season tire as
they rolled over clear pavement. The X-Ice
Xi2 and ExtremeWinterContact were found
to be the quietest of the group. The Graspic
DS-3 generated a modest hum, while the
Blizzak WS70 produced a low growl heard
predominantly at below-highway speeds. All
four delivered reasonable ride comfort, with
the X-Ice Xi2 doing the best job softening the
sharper bumps.

We measured how many feet it took to bring the car to a complete
stop from 10 mph when the brakes were applied hard enough to
engage the antilock braking system. More tire traction produces
shorter stopping distances.

If you were to put winter tires on only the front
or rear of your vehicle, you would create a
vehicle with a split personality. The traction
capabilities of the tires on a vehicle play the
largest single role in determining how that
vehicle will react in any given situation. With

traction control systems will be lost and vehicle handling compromised.

Why Too Little is Never Enough
Tire Rack recommends that drivers expecting to encounter
snow-covered roads consider replacing their tires when they
reach approximately 6/32" of remaining tread depth to maintain
good mobility. Tires need more tread depth in winter conditions
to compress snow in their grooves and release it as they roll. If
there isn’t sufficient tread depth, the “bites” of snow that can be
processed on each tire revolution will be reduced to “nibbles,” and
the vehicle’s traction and mobility in snow will be reduced.
Fortunately, winter tires are typically molded with deeper tread
depths than summer or all-season tires, and many of them also
feature Winter Wear Indicators (also called Snow Platforms) to
identify that a tire’s tread depth remains suitable for beneficial
snow performance. While Winter Wear Indicators are not intended
to be a sign of when the tire is legally worn out, experience shows
that once the tire has worn down to approximately 6/32" tread depth
and the winter wear indicators are seen connecting adjacent tread

How to Confirm a
Winter Performer
What’s the snow traction difference between an M+S
(Mud and Snow) branded tire, an all-season tire and a
purpose-built winter tire?
While many drivers probably aren’t absolutely sure, it can
be the difference between getting to work, getting home or
getting stuck.
The definition of M+S tires is based on the geometry of the tread design.
The designation was first used to differentiate the knobby bias ply tires
intended for use on muddy and/or snow-covered roads from the straight
rib tires used on early cars or trucks. Tires with tread designs that meet
the definition may be branded with the letters “M” and “S” in several different ways (e.g. M&S, M+S, M/S, MS, etc.).
In 1999, The U.S. Rubber Manufacturers Association
(RMA) and the Rubber Association of Canada (RAC)
agreed on a performance based standard.
The mountain/snowflake symbol appears adjacent to the
tire’s M+S label. All the tires that we list as winter tires
meet or exceed the standard required to display these symbols. Although all
of the winter tires that we offer meet this standard, the tire manufacturers
have designed different tires to meet different winter driving priorities.

Tire inflation pressures change due to time and temperature. Tires lose about
1 psi per month due to air escaping through the rubber as it stretches. If you
were to check your tires only every six months, it would not be uncommon
to find them underinflated by as much as 6 psi. Tire inflation pressures also
fluctuate with changes in the outside air temperature. This occurs at a rate of
about 1 psi for every 10°F (plus or minus). So the tires you set correctly with an
80°F ambient temperature will be underinflated by 6 psi at 20°F.
If you add the variations of time and temperature together, it is easy to understand why a tire’s inflation pressure should be checked frequently. Improper
inflation can cause tires to wear irregularly and can void the manufacturer’s
warranty. Spending about two minutes a week will help you get the optimum
performance your tires can offer!

Winter Tires category: studdable winter / snow
studdable winter / snow tires were developed to use metal studs that
provide enhanced ice and hard-packed snow traction. They typically
trade some noise quality and ride comfort for enhanced ice traction when
studded. Full-pattern studding is available on these tires for $15 per tire.
METAL STUDS FOR WINTER TIRES
Introduced in the mid-sixties, metal studs were developed for winter tires to contribute to safer
winter travel by enhancing traction on the most slippery road condition…ice. The vehicle’s weight
and tire’s centrifugal force allow the studs to provide more traction by chipping into the ice as the
tire rolls. However when the road isn’t covered with snow or ice, tire studs noisily chip into the
road itself. So studs are good for ice traction, but not good for the roads they drive on.
Tire studs are made by encasing a tungsten carbide pin in a cylindrical metal housing.
Typically 80 to 100 studs per tire are inserted into holes molded in the tire’s tread design.
Because studdable winter tires are manufactured with different tread depths, studs are
manufactured in different lengths that must be matched to the depth of the holes molded
in the tire to accept the studs.
We don’t recommend studded winter tires for high-speed driving because high speeds, as well as
excessive tire spinning can cause studs to be ejected. Note: Metal stud use is restricted in some states.
