Boosting self-confidence when children really
struggle
The hardest aspect of parenting is watching your children
struggle, whether they are dealing with personal, friendship or
learning problems. Our natural reaction is to protect children or
fix things when they have difficulty. Sometimes no matter what
we say, or do, our children experience crises of confidence.
Disappointments and difficulties are part of life and children
grow stronger when they overcome their difficulties. The
challenge for parents is to build and maintain children’s
confidence enough to help them get through the rough times.
It helps to talk through a problem or incident recognising and
accepting their feelings. Talk about various scenarios around
the problem at hand, discussing the possible outcomes. The
age of the child will determine the amount of detail you will be
able to go into. Avoid burdening a younger child with concepts
he or she is too young to understand. Keep things simple.
Build a sense of responsibility by giving your child some
important jobs or treating him as if he is more capable than
you think. Sometimes we give responsibility to the child who
already is responsible rather than the child who needs his or her
confidence boosted.
Encourage your child rather than criticise. Each child has
different talents and abilities so it is pointless comparing him
or her to others. Let your child know that if they do the best
they can, that is all that matters. Play down any deficiencies and
emphasise the good things about each child. It is much easier
to remember negative things than positive ones, and if children

repeatedly hear that they are inadequate, they will come to
believe it.
Most importantly, tell your kids you love them every day.
Children must feel that they are loveable if they are to feel
worthwhile.
Boosting self-confidence is not a one act play. It is a continuous
process where the results may take years to show. But hang in
there because your child is worth it.
Kind regards

contact our wonderful office staff.
Staff Carpark
Please note that the staff carpark is NOT a stop and drop off
area. This area is for staff only. We are seeing an increase in
the number of parents picking up their students from this area.
Please avoid doing so.
PREP NEWS
Lap-a-thon – success!
Dear Parents,
Once again our Lap-a-thon was a huge success. The students
had a ball doing laps and enjoying themselves (for the first 5
mins anyway?) Even some of our teachers had a run too!
We have had a very busy few weeks in Prep. One of the
highlights would have to have been book week. We saw many
people go to a lot of effort with their costumes. It was wonderful
to see. The students all really enjoyed the day as well. Book
week is a great way to reinforce the joy, but also the importance
of reading. Next term, our swimming program starts up. We
would ask parents to start encouraging their children to practise
dressing themselves, if they don’t already, in preparation for
this, as they will obviously need to be capable of doing this
when we start our swimming. Thank you to everyone who has
donated 10c pieces so far. Please keep these coming in. Thank
you for all your support so far this year.
Now comes the important part, raising the funds for our new
playgrounds. Please send in donations ASAP. These donations
will be collected in the Tuckerbox by our P&C.
Well done to all on another fantastic event!
Attendance
Student attendance continues to be a push at Ormeau State
School. It is extremely important that your child attends school
every day to give them the very best chance of success at
school. Please read the below information regarding
attendance:
Why is regular attendance at school important?
Regular school attendance will mean that your child has a
better chance in life. Your child will achieve better when they go
to school all day, every school day.
• they learn better
• they make friends
• they are happier
• they have a brighter future.
Why must I send my child to school?
Under Queensland law, you must make sure your child of
school age is enrolled and attends school all day, every school
day unless they have an acceptable reason. Illness, doing work
experience or competing in a school sporting event are
acceptable reasons for being absent from school. Principals
decide if the reason given for your child’s absence is
acceptable.
Avoid keeping your child away from school for:
• birthdays, shopping, visiting family and friends, if they
sleep in, looking after other children, minor
check-ups or care such as haircuts. Routine medical
or other health appointments should be made either
before or after school or during the school holidays.
Education Queensland’s target is 93% attendance for
State Schools. Below is our current school attendance by
year level:

Brendan Creighton & Jane Tuckett.

Hello Parents and Caregivers,
We are fast approaching the end of Term 3. It’s amazing how
fast the weeks have passed and how much the students have
learned. The students have been working hard at writing an
information report about a chosen country as well as learning
about places they are connected to in Geography. In Maths the
students have been working hard at addition and subtraction
problem solving and multiplication, and so much more.
We would like to welcome Jo Walsh to our team. Jo has
replaced Jaci Phillips who has taken maturity leave. Please say
hello to Jo and welcome her to our Year 2 team.
The students did a wonderful job doing their laps for the
lap-a-thon. Please return any lap-a-thon forms to your class
teacher so they can note how many laps your child did and then
forward the completed form with the money to school. Last
week the students and staff had a lovely day dressing up as a
book character and doing fun activities linked to a book.
Cross country will be held on Thursday 1st September. A
timetable has been sent home. Another upcoming event is
Celebrating Science Day on Wednesday 14th September. A
note with more information has been sent home including
information on an incursion the Year 2’s are attending on the
day. Payment of $7 is to be made at the office.
Parent-Teacher interviews will be offered in weeks 9 and/or 10
this term. This gives you the opportunity to discuss your child’s
progress and discuss any concerns you may have. A note will
be sent home from your class teacher with further information.
Reminders:
• Please send a piece of fruit or vegetables in a
separate container each day for mental munchies.
• Send a water bottle daily for in the classroom to
alleviate time leaving the classroom and time away
from learning.
Kind regards from the Year 2 teachers

Dear Parents,
Technology unit:
THIS term’s Technology unit has been a great success for
Grade 6 students. We have been designing cake prototypes for
graduation 2016. Later this term they will be put to the test and
a winner will be decided through votes. Let’s hope the winning
cake tastes as good as it looks!
We have been very busy researching and collecting facts on our
various countries around the world. The children have worked
hard to place all of their interesting facts into their final reports
for English.
Congratulations to all of the children who participated in the
Lap-a-thon. There were many children who achieved personal
bests and were able to reach their targets with the number of
laps completed. Please continue to return any money collected.
As part of our Geography Unit we have been investigating
sustainability. We will be collecting data on the contents our
lunch boxes to see what effect we are having on our
environment. We are encouraging the children to discuss the
contents of their lunch box with you, to see if we can improve
on reducing the amount of waste we are producing. The added
benefit of having less packaged items is that we will be
consuming food that is better for us.
We are looking forward to celebrating Science Day on 14th
September. There will be a variety of activities for the children
to participate in and should be a fun day.
Kind Regards,
Science:
THIS term, we have been studying the movement between
tectonic plates, causing the natural disaster known as
Earthquakes. Our learning has been wide ranging from hairline
cracks to major fault lines. We are investigating the effects
of tsunamis, volcanoes, landslides and earthquakes and their
effects on the earth’s surface.

Gold Coast Suns visit:
GRADE 6 students waited with anticipation as Gold Coast Suns
player Adam Saad arrived to give a talk about immigration
and the experience that comes along with moving from your
home country to a new place. Students reached for answers
and more stories were uncovered… 6W student Isabella asked
the winning question ‘If you stayed in Melbourne would you
have accomplished as much as you have today?’ ISABELLA’S
thoughtful question won her a special signed AFL ball. Great
Job Bella!
TECTONIC plates spread all around the world causing millions
of deaths when plates collide and energy is released. After
effects can include: tsunamis, aftershocks and fires.
German:
THESE past couple of weeks In German, we
have been focusing on a famous German
sensation Diddl, a stationary company which
has blown up in business in the past decade,
we have each been assigned to a character and have been
studying and finding out about them.

SPECIAL EDUCATION NEWS
WOW! We are almost at the end of term three, hasn’t the time
just flown?
We would like to thank the parents of the Prep, year 1 and year
2 students for their fabulous costumes for book parade. The
students had a lot of fun on the day!
Please enjoy a few photos from the morning – more to come in
the School Rewind Magazine.

Roll dough out to 1cm thickness, then using a circle cutter cut
out 24 scones.
Milk wash top of scones and cook in the oven 10-12 minutes
until golden.
At the beginning of term 2 we started a before school
homework club for all SEP students. To compliment this idea
we have introduced a breakfast club at the same time for all
SEP students. Both of these are available Monday, Wednesday
and Friday mornings from 8:30-8:50am. The students are
provided toast, fruit and Mrs Post has been cooking up fresh
muffins to eat.
The term bush tomato refers to the fruit or entire plants of
certain nightshade (Solanum) species native to the more arid
parts of Australia. While they are quite closely related to
tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum), they might be even closer
relatives of the eggplant (S. melongena), which they resemble
in many details. There are 94 (mostly perennial) natives and 31
(mostly annual) introduced species in Australia.
Bush tomato plants are small shrubs whose growth is
encouraged by fire and disturbance. The fruit of a number of
species have been used as food sources by Aboriginal people
in the drier areas of Australia. They have a very strong flavor
and scent when ripe and fresh, so that one can actually smell a
richly fruiting specimen from quite a distance.
Bush Tomato has a strong sun dried tomato, caramel and
tamarillo flavour and aroma which is just delicious in recipes
with tomato, cheese or eggs. Also goes well with Salmon and
stronger flavoured white or game meats. Can be used as a
Dukka or crusting for meats.
COMMUNITY NEWS
Just a reminder that we offer the following lunch time clubs to
the year 4, 5 and 6 SEP students only.
• Garden club is on Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and
Friday’s.
• Cooking club is on Thursday’s and this is done on a
rotational basis between the students
• Ipad club in on Monday’s and Thursday’s.
Finally, we would like to wish all the Father’s and Grandfather’s
a very Happy Father’s Day for Sunday 3rdth September.
Regards,
Rebecca Johnston, Peter Giles, Sarah Lopes,
Christine Johnston and Toni Hutton
