The purpose of this activity is to guide your child in exploring the kinds of homes around their own neighborhood and town. Objective Take a drive all around your town or neighborhood and observe the different kinds of homes you see. Materials • A digital camera to record different kinds of homes (optional) • The Homes Around Me printable included in this guide Steps 1. After watching The Amazing Human Body together, talk with your children about the kind of home they live in. Ask them what other kinds of homes they know people live in. What kinds of homes did they see in the video? 2. Once you have established that there are many kinds of homes, go out and see how many you can find! Take along a digital camera if you’d like to record what you see. 3. While driving, encourage your child to wonder and observe, just like the TreeSchoolers do! Are some homes you see large and others small? Do some stand alone and are others apartments or condos? 4. Upon returning to your own house, print out the Homes Around Me sheet included in this guide. Have your child draw at least four different kinds of homes they observed while on their drive. © Two Little Hands Productions. Rachel & the TreeSchoolers “The Amazing Human Body” Activity Guide Permission to duplicate granted for educational purposes. www.treeschoolers.com 3 Follow-‐Up Activities 1. The Three Little Pigs Visit your local library and find a version of the book, The Three Little Pigs. After reading the book with your child, discuss how each pig had a different kind of home. Gather up supplies to make collage pictures of each pig’s house. (Suggestions: real straw or dry spaghetti for the straw house, real sticks or toothpicks for the stick house, and red squares of paper or Legos for bricks). 2. Match the TreeSchoolers’ Homes! Use the TreeSchoolers’ Homes printable included in this guide. Cut the picture cards of each TreeSchooler and their homes. Mix up the deck of cards and play a match game, putting together each animal with their respective home. 3. Build a House Choose several different colors of construction paper. Cut out a large square (the main house), smaller squares (windows), and several rectangles (door, chimney, and shutters). You could also cut out some circles for treetops and additional rectangles for tree trunks. Let your child glue the pieces together to create a house. 4. Story Time Go to your local library and look for the book, The Shape of Things, by Dayle Ann Dodds. The illustrations pair beautifully with this activity! © Two Little Hands Productions. Rachel & the TreeSchoolers “The Amazing Human Body” Activity Guide Permission to duplicate granted for educational purposes. www.treeschoolers.com 4 Activity 2: My Five Senses Scavenger Hunt Purpose In this episode, Rachel and the TreeSchoolers learn about the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. In this activity, your child will explore how each of the senses work by experiencing things around the house. Objective By filling out the printable, your child will identify and practice using each of the five senses Materials My Five Senses Scavenger Hunt printable, crayons Steps 1. Start with the first sense on the paper – the eyes. Ask your child, what do you see with your eyes? Look around and have your child talk about what can be seen. Choose one thing to add to the paper. 2. Move on through the other senses. Really engage your child in the process. For instance, you might say, “Shhhhh… let’s listen carefully! What noises can you hear?” Or, “Let’s look in the fridge! I wonder what we’ll smell in there! Will it be yummy or stinky?” And so on… 3. After going around the house exploring what can be experienced with the senses, sit down with your child and have fun drawing each object or experience you’ve identified together! Follow-‐up Activities 1. Talk It Out Using the completed My Five Senses Scavenger Hunt printable, talk with your child in more detail about what he experienced. Invite him to verbalize with description. For instance, “With my eyes I saw ____________ and it looked ________________”. Or, “With my hears I heard _________________ and it sounded ____________________.” There is no need to write anything down, just enjoy the interactive conversation and exploring together! © Two Little Hands Productions. Rachel & the TreeSchoolers “The Amazing Human Body” Activity Guide Permission to duplicate granted for educational purposes. www.treeschoolers.com 5 2. Sensory Box Take a box (shoe box size or larger) and cut a hole in one side, large enough for a preschooler to reach their hand in. Fill the box with things of various textures. Examples might be: a cotton ball, a bouncy ball, a piece of sand paper, a small piece of fruit (not too squishy!), a pencil, etc. Close up the box and invite your child to reach a hand in and grab an object. Without removing the hand, ask them to describe what they are touching. What does it feel like? Encourage use of texture words such as: soft, hard, scratchy, soft, pointy, etc. 3. Sensory Play Dough For this no-‐cook play dough, you will need: 3 cups of flour, 1 cup salt, 1 cup water (adjust as needed for desired consistency), extract of your choice (ex: almond, peppermint, lemon, cinnamon, vanilla), food coloring of choice. Combine. Can be stored in a sealed plastic bag. Let your child take part in choosing the color (sight), and extract if possible (smell). As you add the ingredients, talk about how each feels (flour is soft, water is wet, salt is scratchy. We recommend not touching the food coloring and extract straight). Once all ingredients are combined, talk about how it feels, looks, and smells. How is it different now, that it is combined, than it was, when each ingredient was separate? Enjoy some free time play together with your colorful and wonderfully scented play dough! 4. Story Time Go to your local library and see if you can find some of these titles that introduce children to the concept of any of the five senses: Baby Bear Sees Blue by Ashley Wolf Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. Dog’s Noisy Day by Emma Dodd Listen to the City by Rachel Isadora My Five Senses by Aliki Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What do You Hear? by Bill Martin Jr. The Listening Walk by Paul Showers © Two Little Hands Productions. Rachel & the TreeSchoolers “The Amazing Human Body” Activity Guide Permission to duplicate granted for educational purposes. www.treeschoolers.com 6 Activity 3: Healthy Food for Me Purpose In this episode we see Rachel pulling several healthy snacks from her bag: apple, carrots, celery, grapes, whole grain crackers, and a banana. Rachel teaches us that healthy foods help us run and play, and they give us lots of energy! In this activity children will make and eat some healthy foods of their choice. Engaging kids in choosing and creating their own healthy foods increases the chance they will eat them, so have fun with this! Objective Your child will help choose and prepare healthy foods for your family to eat. Materials • A slice of whole-‐grain (or gluten free!) bread • Spread of choice (cream cheese, nut or seed butter) • Child-‐selected fruits. We suggest choosing soft ones your child can help cut using a butter knife, such as peeled kiwi, banana, etc. Also consider “finger fruits” that do not require cutting, such as berries and grapes. Steps 1. Look at a grocery store ad with your child. Help your child cut out pictures of the fruits she would like to try. 2. Go to the grocery store and help your child select some fruits. Pick two favorites and two that your child has never tried before! 3. Wash, peel, and slice the fruit. Assist your child as needed. 4. Put the spread on the slice of bread. Assist your child as needed. 5. Arrange the fruit slices on the bread in a pretty design. During the process, talk about the different foods and how they keep our amazing bodies healthy. For example, bread is a carbohydrate, which gives us energy and keeps us full. Nut and seed spreads have protein to help us stay strong. Fruits help keep our bodies healthy. Talk about the color and texture of each as you go. 6. Make one for each member of the family and enjoy! © Two Little Hands Productions. Rachel & the TreeSchoolers “The Amazing Human Body” Activity Guide Permission to duplicate granted for educational purposes. www.treeschoolers.com 7 Follow-‐up Activities 1. Food Match Print the Food Match printable included in this guide. Have your child color in the fruits and veggies before you begin! Once all your produce is colored in, cut out the cards and shuffle. Have your child re-‐organize the cards by categorizing by color, placing all the red foods together, the green foods together, and so on. 2. My Healthy Plate Using the enclosed My Healthy Plate printable, help your child choose three healthy foods to draw on the plate. Don’t forget to draw a glass of water to go with it! 3. Let’s Go Shopping! Look at a supermarket ad with lots of pictures of colorful foods. Working with your child, have him identify a list of 10 foods he would like to purchase for the week’s groceries. Encourage him towards healthful choices, and to choose at least two new foods he has not tried yet. Cut out the pictures of the foods and glue them onto a sheet of blank paper, creating a visual shopping list. Head to the store together to gather your items, and enjoy some child-‐led healthy eating for the week! 4. More TreeSchoolers, Please! Watch Rachel &The TreeSchoolers Episode 2: Plants and Flowers and download the Episode 2 Activity Guide for other healthy eating activities. 5. Story Time Read about digestion with your child. These books about digestion may be available at your local library or bookstore: What Happens to a Hamburger by Paul Showers The Gas We Pass: the Story of Farts by Shinta Cho The Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body by Joanna Cole The Digestive System by Christina Taylor-‐Butler © Two Little Hands Productions. Rachel & the TreeSchoolers “The Amazing Human Body” Activity Guide Permission to duplicate granted for educational purposes. www.treeschoolers.com 8 Activity 4: This is Me! Purpose In this episode, Rachel sings songs about parts of the body, like “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.” These activities will help your child identify parts of the body. Objective Your child will practice identifying different parts of her body. Materials • This is Me printable (coloring page, poems) • Art supplies, as needed Steps 1. On the This is Me printable page, have your child draw a picture of herself. Ask your child to point to the arms, legs, hands, and feet in the picture. 2. Read the This is Me poems to your child, inviting her to point to body parts as they are named. Rachel uses sign language in this episode of Rachel & the TreeSchoolers. Sign Flash Cards are included in this guide so you can practice signing at home. To learn more, check out Signing Time at www.signingtime.com. © Two Little Hands Productions. Why Sign Language?
Rachel has a daughter, Leah, who is deaf. So signing is a part of her everyday life. It’s also why
she, and her sister, Emilie, created the award-winning Signing Time, Baby Signing Time and Potty
Time programs. It was natural to include signing in TreeSchoolers because when children’s hands
are moving, their minds are learning!
Signing allows infants to communicate before they can talk.
Research shows that infants and toddlers who sign:
• are less frustrated
• learn to talk sooner
• have larger vocabularies than non-signers
• scored higher on IQ tests at age 8
Signing is a powerful learning tool.
Once a child begins to talk, signing continues to offer important educational benefits. When
signs and words are used together, auditory learners hear the word, visual learners see the sign
and kinesthetic learners can use their hands to make the sign. In other words, signing creates the
perfect storm that can trigger a surge in language learning and cognitive development. Research
shows that preschool and elementary children who use signs and finger spelling:
• expand their vocabularies more quickly
• develop more positive attitudes toward reading
• learn letters, numbers, and sight words more easily
Signing helps children with special needs.
Children who have autism, Down syndrome, speech challenges, or language delays often use
signs as a primary means of communication or to simply clarify their speech. Signing opens the
door to meaningful social interactions with parents, teachers, and peers.
