EAST VILLAGE OVERVIEW
East Village is where Calgary began and where the future of city life is unfolding. Delivered by
master developer Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), EV offers a new way of living
downtown, with walkable access to the best of city life, be it public art and culture, new civic
institutions like the New Central Library, entertainment hubs like the National Music Centre,
public spaces like RiverWalk and new retail and dining opportunities.
The public spaces of East Village, from the two kilometres of RiverWalk™ to urban parks and
heritage buildings, are an invitation to explore every corner of our urban village. Our bridges
and pathways connect EV to other Calgary neighbourhoods in world-class style, our various
innovative parks are places to relax in the urban rush, and our carefully-restored historic
buildings are a reminder of EV’s roots as Calgary’s first neighbourhood.

ST. PATRICK’S ISLAND
Just three skips of a stone from East Village, St. Patrick’s Island is one of Calgary’s oldest
parks. Its development as a public space began in the late 1890s and gained momentum with
construction of a bridge to the island in the early 1900s. More than a century later, this all-butforgotten treasure at the city’s centre is about to re-emerge as an amenity-rich, family-friendly
park space for all Calgarians to enjoy.
The revitalized island’s attractions and enhancements include:
• The Tip – a vantage point and seating area at the island’s western most edge, with great views of the river and downtown Calgary
•
The Seasonal Breach – a restored channel where visitors can wade into the water and venture safely out onto a gravel bar.
•
The Rise – a grassy knoll, nine metres high, that provides a perfect setting for community celebrations, performances and movies in the park (and, in winter, for some fantastic sledding)
•
The Lowland Channel – a seasonal riparian wetland at the heart of the island, with an elevated boardwalk for no-impact access to the wetland and the Gallery Forest, an important habitat for nesting eagles, owls and songbirds
•
The Lookout Plaza – a gathering place with seating areas, a small amphitheatre and water features
•
Head to the graceful arches for food truck festivals, curated art, and more

SIMMONS BUILDING
Part historical landmark, part community gathering place and really big part food lovers’
paradise, the Simmons Building will be a unique culinary destination right in the heart of
East Village. Opening summer 2015, the former mattress factory will be home to three of the
city’s most sought-after gastronomic tenants: Charbar, Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters and
Sidewalk Citizen Bakery.

NEW CENTRAL LIBRARY
The New Central Library, designed to be the leading library of the next century, will be a
literary cornerstone of East Village. Forward-looking and functional from the ground up, it will
serve as a cultural and physical connector that will reunite East Village with the Calgary core.
Snøhetta of Oslo/New York and Calgary’s DIALOG have designed an iconic building that
will rise over the existing C-Train line into four open, futuristic stories of space that will
accommodate the ever-changing needs of Calgarians, from meeting space to quiet space,
learning space and a multitude of other uses.

NATIONAL MUSIC CENTRE
The National Music Centre links Calgary’s musical past with its entertainment future,
amplifying the love, sharing and understanding of music as it goes.
Designed by Allied Works Architects of Portland, Oregon, National Music Centre is imagined
as a living instrument, a destination and a new kind of cultural institution. The 160,000 square
foot, $168 million project is being built around the historic King Edward Hotel – Calgary’s
legendary home of the blues – and straddles 4th Street SE via an overhead passageway that
leads to another vast building.
Inside National Music Centre, Calgarians will find live music venues and bars, formal
performance spaces, artists in residence, a radio station, one of North America’s most eclectic
musical instrument collections, musical lessons and scholarship. The music starts in 2016.

hotel on 7th Avenue and 4th Street SE means comfy accommodations and an effortless walk
to anywhere for guests to the neighbourhood.
Built by Widewaters Group, the 14-storey hotel will combine the Hilton Garden Inn and
Homewood Inn and Suites under one luxurious rooftop terrace, to accommodate both short
term and longer term stays. The hotel is slated to open in 2016.
