An amazing assortment of items collects in tack rooms on old, established ranches. From an artistic point of view, I overlapped the cowboy's white shirt , the white pail, and the woolly chaps to create a large area of light color in the top half of the painting. The left side of his black hat flows into the shadow behind him; paintings pack more punch when darks and lights are connected to form large interesting patterns. Beginning in pastel and in gradually increasing size, Bassett painted his The Wagon three times before his monumental version was reproduced on the cover of The Cattleman in April 1950." The Cattleman described the painting: "It is a Texas scene, typical of the Tule and Palo Duro Canyon of the Red River…..The setting is not an exact location but rather, the painting is a composition documented by many LOT # sketches made by Mr. Bassett on the occasions of his yearly visits to the Tule and Palo Duro Canyons over a period of nearly a century." 60,000.00 - 80,000.00 161 Philip R. Brown & Bigelow, the nation's largest calendar publisher, published Goodwin's calendars, and he received advertising commissions from major firearms companies including the two biggest manufacturers, Winchester Arms and the Marlin Firearms Company. Duane James Ray, president of the Seneca Nation of Indians, has said: "The attention Griffing gives to the accurate portrayal and detail of the Iroquois is remarkable and rarely seen in the work of other non-native artists." John Giblin, former site administrator of Fort Pitt and Bushy Run Battlefield, states, "To my knowledge, not one person in this century has done more to rejuvenate interest in the history, art and culture of early western Pennsylvania. This painting by Julian Onderdonk is an excellent example of his most celebrated subject, the Texas Bluebonnet landscape. It is unique to Onderdonk's traditional landscape as it depicts a rain shower. This was painted just years before his early death, and is an excellent example of his style with brushwork and brilliant use of color. Signed lower left, "Julian Onderdonk". This landscape depicts Onderdonk's early work while in New York. Onderdonk studied under William Merritt Chase at the Shinnecock Summer School of Art, Long Island in 1901. The emphasis of study there was to work from nature, in nature. In a letter home, Onderdonk reported on his early experiences there stating: "The Students paint entirely differently... they always strike the values in the foreground objects first and then work back to the sky line and afterwards touch the whole thing up. I work that way now." This positive realization signifying a new development in his technique is portrayed in this painting.
