Boren comments: "This Texas Cowboy is
surrounded by the tools of his trade, most of it
well-used and worn. An amazing assortment of
items collects in tack rooms on old, established
ranches. From an artistic point of view, I
overlapped the cowboy's white shirt , the white
pail, and the woolly chaps to create a large area
of light color in the top half of the painting. The
left side of his black hat flows into the shadow
behind him; paintings pack more punch when
darks and lights are connected to form large
interesting patterns. This cowboy is one of those
fortunate souls who gets to go to work each day
with their dog, and his dog thinks he hung the
moon!"

Canvas: 28"H x 36''W; Frame: 37.25''H x 45''W.
Signed and dated lower left, "JL Terelak 85";
titled verso. The 'Terelak touch' is unmistakable;
an intricate system of layered paint and glazing,
incredible use of color and rich surface texture
are hallmarks of his paintings. "I've been called
an American traditionalist and impressionist, but
those are just labels. In fact, the only thing that
really matters is the work itself, and the feelings
the work produces." His paintings are included
in such collections as the: Andrew Mellon
Foundation, Sheraton Corporation, Winthrop
Financial Corporation, Prudential Insurance
Company, and Sterling-Regal Publishing
Company. John Terelak's works have been

oil on canvas. Canvas: 24''H x 30''W; Frame:
27.5''H x 33.5''W. Signed lower right,
"Hoffman". Few illustrators of the 20s through
the 40s could equal the success of Hoffman. He
flourished as a commercial artist, noted for his
illustrations in Brown & Bigelow Company's
calendars; he also produced numerous
illustrations for books, magazines, and
advertisements. He had a passion for horses and
Western genre as he was raised in the home of a
horse trainer. Charles M. Russell commented:
"Nobody could draw a horse like Hoffman". He
studied at the Chicago Art Institute and became
a master of light and color under J. Wellington
Reynolds. Source: Western Heritage Center

Frame: 38.75"H x 48"W. Signed lower right,

find that I don't paint many still lifes, just
because I don't find painting flowers or fruit
interesting. But I never tire of scenes like this.
Something with history or one which has a
deeper meaning, and yet is simple at its very
heart. Just a Navajo blanket, a lariat and a
buffalo skull. It's the whole history of the West
in one scene.

Art Institute of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania and a
highly successful thirty-year career in
commercial art, Griffing returned to the subject
of his early fascination, painting the Eastern
Woodland Indian of the 18th century. Duane
James Ray, president of the Seneca Nation of
Indians, has said: "The attention Griffing gives
to the accurate portrayal and detail of the
Iroquois is remarkable and rarely seen in the
work of other non-native artists." John Giblin,
former site administrator of Fort Pitt and Bushy
Run Battlefield, states, "To my knowledge, not
one person in this century has done more to
rejuvenate interest in the history, art and culture
of early western Pennsylvania. His work has
also given rise to a new excitement for the
cultural mystique of the eastern Native
American."

unique to Onderdonk's traditional landscape as it
depicts a rain shower. This was painted just
years before his early death, and is an excellent

Onderdonk's early work while in New York.
Onderdonk studied under William Merritt Chase
at the Shinnecock Summer School of Art, Long
Island in 1901. The emphasis of study there was
to work from nature, in nature. In a letter home,
Onderdonk reported on his early experiences
there stating: "The Students paint entirely
differently... they always strike the values in the
foreground objects first and then work back to
the sky line and afterwards touch the whole
thing up. I work that way now." This positive
realization signifying a new development in his
technique is portrayed in this painting. Source:
