Rabbi’s Message
From the Rabbi’s Desk...
A Note FROM Our RABBINIC
INTERN, Marley Weiner
Recently, an article appeared in the Jewish Week about
rabbis and rabbinical students from interfaith families,
and I was lucky enough to be featured as part of that article. For the past twenty to thirty years, there has been
a dramatic shift in the number of Jews married to nonJews. And because the shift happened twenty to thirty
years ago, I, and others like me, are at the forefront of
young Jewish adults who came of age in a world where
we were surrounded by other interfaith families, and
are now growing into positions of Jewish leadership. I
wanted to use this article as a catalyst to provide a little
bit more background for the Beth Rishon community
about my family, my decision to not undergo mikvah
at this time, and how this relates to my work at Temple
Beth Rishon. I am very lucky to be working for a community that supports my work, and I would like to thank
all of you, as well as Rabbi Emert, for the opportunity to
speak about this very important issue that is near and
dear to my heart.
As is mentioned in the article, I was born to a father who
was raised as a Conservative Jew and a mother who was
raised Presbyterian. My parents are both religious questioners but neither of them are religious. That being
said, they have been tremendously supportive of my
path in connecting to Judaism and becoming a rabbi.
Some of you even met them when they came to support me in my student pulpit during the High Holidays.
I hope to encourage them to come back for Shabbat
services before this year is over.
Growing up in an interfaith family has had benefits to
my rabbinate. Because I grew up around multiple religious viewpoints, I have been forced to question, refine,
and define my faith every step of the way, which has
only made it stronger. My parents are very supportive in
our theological conversations, and their differing views
help to keep me intellectually and spiritually honest.
But my parents were not able to raise me as a committed Jew by themselves. In growing into the Jew that I
am today, one of the most important factors was the
support of my Jewish community. My home synagogue
taught me about the magic of Jewish texts, the beauty
of Shabbat and the Holidays, and gave me my first opportunities to teach Judaism as a Hebrew High School
student Hebrew School teacher. My synagogue also had
many interfaith families and an active interfaith couples’
group, which provided many positive role models of
families like mine who loved and embraced Judaism. It
is partially because of this that I never had any doubts
that I could become a rabbi if I so chose.
It is in part the support of my home synagogue that has
led me to choose not to undergo mikveh at this time. I
strongly believe that there is room in the Jewish community for many different types of people, and I want
to serve as a rabbinic exemplar for Jewish families that
look like mine. Growing up in a Jewish community that
was supportive of the non-Jews in its midst was really
powerful for me, and I want to make sure that my future
congregants, especially the children, know that they
can come and speak to me about any difficult questions
of their Jewish identity, and that I will be able to answer
their questions from a place of first-hand experience.
This is part of the reason that I am excited to be working
at Beth Rishon this year. I was greatly impressed by Beth
and Seth Fisher’s words during their Kol Nidrei Appeal
speech of wisdom and love for the Beth Rishon community. Having that speech be the center point of the
High Holiday campaign really spoke to me about this
community’s acceptance of interfaith families. I hope
that, in my time here, I can also be a positive face on
the possibilities of raising children with a strong sense
of Jewish self within the context of an interfaith family.

Cantor’s Message
From the Cantor’s Desk...
THERE ARE STARS…
Death is a fact of life. We all experience it. None of us can escape it. We are all saddened
by it. We have all experienced mourning. Our Beth Rishon community is a congregation
that encompasses all ages. Throughout the years, many of our families have experienced
death, mostly of aging parents. But periodically we lose someone who is considered relatively young and, therefore, their death may be considered more of a loss than when it is expected.
Our congregation was founded in the 1970’s. It passed
its “teenage phase” in the 80’s, and “young family phase”
in the 90’s. The congregation is now in its “middle age
phase”, and it is aging. The past three weeks have been
particularly indicative that we are in that phase. Our
families have experienced an unusually high number of
deaths. Within that time period, there have been at least
eight losses.
Our Beth Rishon community must be commended in
its show of support for these grieving families. Many of
our member families were present at the various funerals and numerous shiva homes and minyan services.
The families in mourning received comfort through the
visitations of friends and of members of our congregation who came to support these families with memories of their loved ones as well as plenty of food baskets.
Our members aided the families through their time of
need by spending time with them, talking about the deceased and helping them get through the most difficult
time immediately after the funerals. That is what a congregational family is all about.
We convey our deepest condolences to our grieving
families on their time of loss: To the Zoll Family on the
loss of Shirley, David’s beloved mother, and Jared and
Allie’s beloved grandmother. To Jack Berger and the Javer and Greenbaum Families on the loss of long time
Beth Rishon member, Carol, beloved wife of Jack and
beloved mother of Sharon, Judyth, David, Daniel, Rachel, and Robert, and beloved grandmother of Daryn,
Deanna, Lily, Marley, and Brady. To the Gerhadt Family
on the loss of Darry, Ira’s beloved mother and Max’s beloved grandmother. To the Friedman, Krieger, and Fisherman Families on the loss of Leslie, the beloved hus-
band of Mary Ann, beloved father of Joan and Amy, and
the beloved grandfather of Stephanie, Jocelyn, Dylan,
and Alex. To the Grossberg Family on the loss of Joseph,
beloved father of Sonye and the beloved grandfather
of Jason and Amy. To the Konner and Rosner Families
on the loss of long time Beth Rishon Member Florence,
beloved mother of Ken, R. J., and Gary and the beloved
grandmother of Kimberly, Jared, Madison, Cameron,
Melissa, Blake, Samantha, and Malcolm. To the Heller
and Polevoy Families on the loss of Edwin, Natalie’s and
Sherry’s beloved father, and the beloved grandfather
of Michael, Robert, Adam, Danny, and Lindsay. To the
Dressler Family on the loss of Marilyn Ellen, Linda’s beloved mother, and Michael’s beloved grandmother.
On behalf of the families above and their loved ones
who have passed on, I would like to conclude a poem
by Channa Szenesh:
There Are Stars
There are stars up above, So far away we only see their
light long, long after the star itself is gone. And so it is with
people that we loved -- their memories keep
shining ever brightly though their time with us is done.
But the stars that light up the darkest night, these
are the lights that guide us. As we live our days,
these are the ways we remember.

President’s Message
From the President’s Desk...
The months of loss...
Often we say that bad things happen in “3”s”.
For our community, in a period of six weeks we lost nearly a dozen loved ones. Every time the
Cantor called me, I held my breath thinking he was going to tell me of another loss for one of
our members. Often I would see members during this time and they would say – “Every time I
get an email it says “Baruch Dayen HaEmet”…it’s crazy!!!”
I attended many funerals and many shivas in the month of December and January. Although
they were sad, I also found them inspiring.
I heard such wonderful stories about amazing people – some I knew and some I didn’t. Tales
of friendship, love, devotion, and inspiration of course laced with sadness and melancholy. I
heard stories from grandchildren, children, friends, nieces and nephews. They shared their
memories, their love and their admiration. They laughed, they cried, but most of all, they honored the person who passed. For some, the loss was expected, for others the loss was a shock.
I often found myself tearing up listening to some heartwarming stories and chuckling as stories
were told of some idiosyncratic memories. For all of these families, as well as any family who
has experienced loss, they will spend the next few months or years looking for a “new normal”.
And what continued to blow me away was the support our community gave to these families.
Every shiva home was filled with people from our community. Sometimes there were a hundred people crammed into a den/dining room/living room area. Every generation was represented. It was wonderful seeing young people support their friends when a grandparent was
lost. Often the teens would be in another room, and the little ones would be running around
under everyone’s feet. We brought meals, coffee pots, food, and people to ensure there was
always enough for a minyan. During times of loss, the sense of belonging to a community becomes so important and vital to the healing process.
I want to thank Cantor Mamber for going above and beyond the call of duty officiating at so
many funerals and shiva services. I also want to thank Ron Rosenzweig for helping with the
minyan services – especially when we had two in one evening.
I was proud to be the president of our community. We were there. And we will continue to be
there for these families and all families that are in need.

“Prophecy and Social Action in Judaism”
Suzannah Heschel is a professor and a highly respected biblical and Jewish feminist scholar. She has written
extensively and garnered praise and awards for her activism in interfaith relations, receiving grants from both
the Ford and Carnegie Foundations. Her book, Abraham Geiger and the Jewish Jesus, won a National Book
Award and Germany’s Geiger Prize. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Heschel has received
several honorary doctorates, as well as honorary membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Our speaker follows in the
footsteps of her father Abraham Joshua Heschel, the pre-eminent 20th Century Jewish theologian and
philosopher.
Dr. Heschel will speak to us about our Jewish prophets and their call for social action, and the centrality of
the prophetic tradition, not only in the Bible, but throughout the course of Judaism. Like her father, who
marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, she believes in the critical importance of human rights activism as an
extension of Jewish teaching. She will discuss the prophets’ dream of world peace, their awareness of human
rights, and the primacy of human dignity as a link to God’s dignity. Suzannah Heschel will emphasize the
crucial significance of prophetic Judaism for us today.

Joshua Nelson is
Coming to TBR!
Sunday, March 23 at 4:00 pm
World renowned
Jewish Gospel singer,
Joshua Nelson, will
be performing at
Beth Rishon!
Nelson goes by
the nickname “the
prince of kosher
gospel.” He’s given
credit for the idea of
combining two parts
of his own heritage, African-American
and Jewish, and creating a new style that
combines Jewish meaning and gospel
sounds. Nelson has performed around
the world, for Presidents, congregations,
major music festivals—and for Oprah,
who named him a “Next Big Thing.”
Don’t miss this incredible FREE concert!
Members are Free with Reservations made by February 6th.
Members without reservations & Guests: $10. Student members without reservations & Student guests $5.

On January 8th, Laugh, Learn and Linger,
our social series for women, met for the
second time at the home of Emily Popowitz.
Thirty TBR women gathered in the kitchen
for a morning of learning with guest
speaker, Erica Danziger, a local holistic
health coach. Erica spent time teaching us
healthy snacking options and recipes to
get through the day. She offered healthy
substitutions for typical ingredients and
taught us how to better feed ourselves and
our family. We all enjoyed the opportunity
to taste new things, learn new things and
spend a little relaxing time together. Our
thanks to Emily for graciously hosting us all
in her beautiful home!
