From the Rabbi’s Desk...
The Beatles and Pesach—Imagine That!
Every year at the Seder we invite a special guest, Elijah, the prophet, into our homes. The tradition
says that before the Messiah will arrive, Elijah will appear and announce the Messiah’s coming.
Some have asked what the Messiah will accomplish when he/she arrives. The Bible says on that
day, the Messiah will usher in an era of world peace, and an end of all hatred, oppression and
disease. The Messiah will spread the universal knowledge of the God of Israel to all nations.
These thoughts brought to mind a song made famous by the Beatles many years ago. The song is called “Imagine.” This
happens to be the 50th anniversary of their appearance on the Ed Sullivan show on February 9 th, 1964, where over 70
million viewers tuned in to watch them change the youth culture forever. One of their songs seems to echo the idea of the
Messianic era for which we pray. The words are as follows:
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one
While at first glance, the song seems to talk about
a Messianic age, a utopia for which we Jews pray,
the more I read over the words, the more I thought
of how the words did not resonate with my own
thinking.
John’s vision of a world without religion and
countries, a world where there is “nothing to kill or
die for”—a sense of oneness-of total unity— is a
world of total conformity, of no imagination, of no
individuality, of no sense of self or personality, a
world where all is one! It sounds great on the
surface, but it also sounds uninteresting!
Imagine no disagreement! A world where we all
think alike, we accept the opinions of one another.
How colorless, or bland, and unexciting! I’d much
rather live in a world of diversity, a world of ideas, a
world of color, rather than a monochromatic world
where everything is muted.
Imagine no possessions. I guess the more
possessions, the more envy, the more hatred, the
more jealousy. But the more possessions also
provide an incentive to work harder to obtain those
possessions, those creaturely comforts which
make life more soothing and more livable. Imagine
no possessions? Imagine-- no drive; no striving for
excellence, because mediocrity would be
acceptable and thus cause us not to stretch the
mind to its fullest!
Imagine--no heaven or hell! NO SENSE OF
JUDGMENT! Somehow judgment keeps us
honest. It makes sure that morality matters, thus
making this world a more ethical place in which to
live for all peoples!
Imagine--no religion! Surely some can argue that
religion too often divides rather than brings us
closer together. But often times, religion gives
people hope and creates a sense of community.
God is a God of diversity and on the 50th
anniversary of the Beatles appearance on our
shores, let us salute the
Beatles for exposing us
to diversity—of music, of
fashion, of thought, and
let us imagine diversity
being part and parcel of
the Messianic age!

REQUIEM FOR MY FRIEND: IRWIN TESSLER
YITZCHAK ben SHLOMO v’LEAH 1946-2014
I received devastating news late on Saturday afternoon, January 25, 2014. One of my closest friends in our
congregation, Irwin Tessler, died from a massive heart attack while skiing on top of a mountain in Colorado. I
was in shock after I received the phone call, and I am still having difficulty dealing with this almost two months
later. Everywhere I go, I see Irwin there with me from some distant memory. Everything I do, I think about a
moment like it that I shared with him. Everything I plan to do, I think about including him and sadly
acknowledge to myself that I no longer can. It is very difficult for me to find the words to describe how I feel.
Irwin was one of my dearest friends and a constant companion.
Deaths, funerals, memorial services are
always difficult, but when there is a close
personal relationship like the one between
Irwin and me, they become even more
heart-wrenching. It is most fitting that we
held Irwin’s memorial service in the
sanctuary of Temple Beth Rishon. After all,
this was his second home. Almost every
Friday evening he was here for Shabbat
Services, sitting towards the back on my
right. He was here regularly for choir rehearsals, Templetones band practice,
Men’s Choir, and an assortment of other
programs and activities too many to
mention. He was an active member of the
Ritual Committee for as long as I can remember and a devoted member of Temple
Beth Rishon for over 26 years. He had
been a Templetones member since its
inception in 1991 and Kol Rishon since
1997. So, yes, this was definitely the right
place.
Irwin was born in Brooklyn and grew up in
Fair Lawn. In the late ‘60s he went to law
school in downtown Brooklyn. In 1974, he
was admitted to the New Jersey Bar
Association. He had a passion for the law
and helping people, and he spent his
professional life in a career he really loved.
He served in the military in Vietnam in the
early 1970s. When Irwin and I traveled to
Washington DC together, for a Federationsponsored symposium in the early 1990s,
the most important stop for him was the
Vietnam War Memorial.
right. We spent a huge amount of time
together. When I first met Irwin in 1988, he
pushed me into running with him in the park
in Glen Rock. Somehow, he got me out
there no matter what the weather
conditions or the temperature. We would do
our five miles together, jogging and always
talking. We talked about life, its heartbreaks
and challenges. Irwin always worried. We
talked about our children and family, about
our professional challenges and successes.
We talked about celebrations and good
times. We talked about skiing, which he
picked up in his fifties when he met Bonnie.
And, of course, we talked about music,
which he loved. Through the years, I
slowed down, so the jogs became walks. I
will miss our walks. I will miss our talks. I
will miss our celebrations of anniversaries
and birthdays. I will miss our bicycle rides
down the Shore. I will miss our jaunts to
concerts, mostly to hear the retread folk
rockers of the ‘60s and ‘70s, with our small
band of roving men who attend rock concerts without their wives—the “Alteh
Rockers.”
Irwin was a gentle soul who was most caring, a gentleman, a real mensch. He had
tremendous integrity and values. Always
warm and giving, he was so energetic. He
died doing something he most loved—
skiing—in a place he loved—Vale, Colorado.
Irwin’s family was the most important part
of his life; family was everything to him. He
was a devoted father, husband, and son.
He would do anything for his children and
eventually for his grandchildren, whom he
adored. In fact, he was looking forward to
becoming a grandfather again. His children
and grandchildren had to have the best—
no hand-me-down toys, secondhand
clothes, or used cars for any of them. Over
the last ten years, he was very happy. He
found Bonnie, and they made a new life
together. She inspired and motivated him to
try new things, and he was rejuvenated.
Irwin was a staple in our choir, Kol Rishon,
and singing in the choir and playing music
were his ways to relax. He was one of the
“bad boys” in the back row who paid no
attention to what I said or how I tried to
conduct. In addition, he was a founding
member of Jimmy and the Templetones,
our congregational rock ‘n’ roll band, 23
years ago. He was our rhythm guitarist, and
he sang:
What would you think if I sang out of tune?
Would you stand up and walk out on me?
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song
And I'll try not to sing out of key
Oh, I get by with a little help from my
friends
Ooh, I get high with a little help from my
friends
Ooh, gonna try with a little help from my
friends
The other place he loved was the house in Irwin, I miss you so much.

President’s Message
April 2014
From the President’s Desk…
Our community grows…..
It was about a year ago at a Friday night Shabbat service that David Klyde (our VP of Religion) and
Ian Zimmerman (President) noticed a few new faces at services. They went up to the group and began a conversation. It turns out the group was from a synagogue called Lakeland Hills Jewish Center in Wanaque. As the conversation continued, they learned that the folks from Lakeland Hills were
“shopping” for a community because they could no longer sustain their small, hamish, synagogue.
Over the period of the next few months, Lakeland sent us a questionnaire asking about different
aspects of our community. A small committee was formed to work on the questionnaire and this
officially put us in strong consideration by Lakeland Hills to consider blending their community into
ours. Several meetings transpired with some of their team and ours. We invited the Lakeland Hills
community to join us for High Holiday services and many of them attended.
A few weeks after the holidays, we received a call that the Lakeland Hills community had chosen
Temple Beth Rishon as their community of choice. We were officially going to start the process of
blending/merging.
A TBR committee was formed with David Klyde as chairperson. Members came from all walks of
life. Committee members are:
Chana Auerbach
Esther Axelrod
Steve Dressler
Ken Esterow
Manny Kaplan
Bennett Leifer
Peter Norden
Michael Prell
Mitch Slodowitz
Ian Zimmerman
We visited the Lakeland Hills synagogue and began to learn a little about their history. At times throughout their history, they had a Hebrew school, but as demographics changed, they had difficulty sustaining it.
Most recently, they had a part time rabbi that performed services on a bi-monthly basis. They were ready
to be involved with a temple that had vibrancy, activities and a community spirit consistent with theirs and
we feel fortunate they chose us.
So now, we are truly beginning to make two communities one. They sold their building and had to move
out in mid-March. A handful of their members came to our Purim celebration and a few of them are
coming to weekly Shabbat services. On April 25th, we are going to have a Shabbat dinner welcoming
them to our community. They are lovely people who are eager to engage and become involved. They are
a small group, but will add a wonderful new dimension to our diverse tapestry. We are still navigating
through some of the details and nuances of blending two communities, but we are working collaboratively
to make sure everyone is comfortable. We still have more questions than answers, but feel confident that
together, the two communities will become one. So – if you see some faces that don’t look familiar, please
introduce yourself and welcome them to TBR.

Chag Ha’Aviv: The Spring Holiday
What an awful winter we have had! There have been far too many snow days, late openings,
dangerous driving conditions, days spent indoors, cars to dig out, and freezing and below
freezing temperatures.
Somehow it happens to me every single year. I get so engrossed in preparing for Pesach –
cleaning and kashering my home, inviting family and friends to Seders, planning out the
Seders, and planning great Pesach lessons and programs for students – that I develop a bit
of tunnel vision. Then, inevitably, on the day of the first Seder, I look up and see that there
are buds on the trees, the forsythia is in bloom, and there are robins hopping around announcing the arrival of my favorite season – spring. With the arrival of spring comes my
favorite holiday – Chag Ha'Aviv or The Spring Holiday: Pesach.
Pesach is a holiday about the rebirth of our people. We were slaves in Egypt, but now we are
free. We come out of the narrowness of Egypt and into the open space of the desert, ready to
start our lives again as a free people.
What does spring time mean to us this year – especially after the winter we had? One of my
favorite traditions is taking a walk with my family right at the height of spring so we can see all
of the flowers and trees in full bloom. Spring also means a new sport season. Families can
bond as baseball and softball teams start again. Spring means cleaning the home in
preparation for Pesach. Though this process is a lot of work, it can bring families closer
together as well. Use the cleaning time as an opportunity to look at objects and photos that
have memories attached to them. Share stories with your family members. Spring time
means coming out of the dark months of winter and opening our eyes and hearts to a fresh,
brand new perspective on life. What a glorious time!
As you sit down to your Pesach Seders this year, remember that sense of joy in the fact that
spring is here and that this is Chag Ha'Aviv. Our ancestors set up our calendar so that
Pesach will always be the holiday that ushers in the spring time. Let's celebrate. Let's relax.
Let's take a deep breath. Spring is here. Now we can start again.

Thank you to Pam Krim and Amanda Zoneraich, our
college connection committee chairs, for sending Purim

Café Beth Rishon
February 8th
About 70 people attended Susannah Heschel’s
inspiring and informative presentation on March
9. She provided many insights into the work of
her father, Abraham Joshua Heschel and spoke
of how she is continuing to foster his ideas,
especially in the area of social justice. We
appreciate the efforts of the Adult Education
committee, the support of our patrons and the
provocative questions posed by our audience.
Don’t miss our next event on May 4th when we
welcome Rabbi Noam E. Marans of the
American Jewish Committee.
See page 10 for more details.
