Welcome to the July
issue of
Charnwood Tails!
FRONT COVER:
Lauren Webb and her 16year-old mare, Fairy.
“The show was Soar Valley [Quorn,
near Loughborough], first one of the
season, and we managed a first,
fourth and a fifth!
“Fairy is a very typical chestnut
mare! We have had lots of ups and
downs in the last three years, but
hopefully the future holds mostly
‘ups’ now.”
Left:
Helen Thompson’s neice,
Milli Hobden, and her miniature
Shetland, Bluebell.
(Another lovely pic, but unfortunately too small for a front cover)

always welcome!

British Horse Society To Promote Horsebox Safety
The BHS and insurance company, NFU Mutual, will be working together to raise awareness of the
risks associated with loading and transporting horses and the importance of regular maintenance
and routine checks of horseboxes and trailers.
Mark Weston, Director of Access, Safety and Welfare at The British Horse Society, said: “We are
pleased to work in partnership with NFU Mutual on this important issue which will help to
improve the safety and welfare of horses while being transported.”
Mrs Nicki Whittaker of NFU Mutual added:
“Although many people invest a lot of time and
effort in the training and turnout of their horse,
a few individuals don’t invest the same amount
of time checking that their horsebox or lorry
is in tip-top condition and this oversight could
jeopardise the safety and well-being of their
animal. Only recently, a mare being transported in
a poorly maintained trailer had to be put to sleep
after the floor on which she was standing gave
way while she was in transit.”
Although incidents of this nature are (thankfully) not common, NFU Mutual still receives a handful
of claims each year for this tragic occurrence. The insurer also handles around 500 claims for vet’s
fees relating to loading injuries every year and believes many of these could be avoided.
Sheila Hardy, Senior Executive (Safety), at The British Horse Society said: “The initiative will begin
with an online survey in July. The survey aims to highlight general attitudes and awareness to
horsebox safety and BHS members who take part in the survey will be entered into a prize draw
to win £50 of vouchers to spend in our BHS bookshop and an NFU Mutual saddlecloth.”
Look out for more news about this initiative and the online survey on the BHS website.

RIDE WITH YOUR MIND
Vivienne Isaac
Well what else would you ride with? Answers on a postcard please!!! Well most people
might think of the following – legs, hands, seat, torso … And yes, they’d be right; we do
need all of these. It’s how we organise all the parts of our bodies that make the difference
as to how well (or not) our horses can move theirs underneath us.
The Ride With Your Mind approach to riding helps us to organise our bodies and minds
in a way that makes us much more effective in the way we influence our horse. It gives us
the ‘how to’ of riding rather than the ‘what should be’, but often isn’t. By knowing what
to pay attention to, we can become much more effective.
Let’s take our alignment as the starting point, for if we are not in our own balance then
it’s very difficult for our horse to be straight underneath us. When you sit on your horse
do you have a straight vertical line through your ear, shoulder, hip and heel? Even this can
be a little vague so I would clarify ‘hip’ as the greater trochanter of the femur – the bony
knobble on the outside of the hip which you can feel if you lift your leg out to the side, and
‘heel’ as the bony knobble on the outside of your ankle. Don’t forget you have two sides
– are they both lined up? (this is rarer than you might think!). To be sure you’ll need to use
mirrors, or get a friend to video or photograph you.
Your alignment will be affected by whether you
tend to hollow your back or round your back,
lean forwards or backwards of vertical, twist
and/or collapse to one side or the other and any
combination of the aforementioned! And you
thought you just needed to sit up straight …
By unravelling our tendencies we can make a
huge leap forward in becoming more effective.
Pay attention to how you sit when driving your
car, work at your computer or when watching
the telly – you can bet your bottom dollar
that you won’t be doing any of these activities
symmetrically either! How many of you can muck
out or sweep up equally well with each hand?
Fold your arms, then unfold them and refold
them with the opposite hand on top. Can you
pat your head and rub your tummy?
If you’d like some help, have some fun and really
impress your horse, give me a call and I’ll be
pleased to help.
Vivienne Isaac, 01509 880652, 07947 075301.

Weight Care Tips
ISometimes it is difficult to assess how much extra weight a horse is carrying and
so it is necessary to check for fat in specific areas such as the crest and over the ribs.
A deep gutter along the spine would be another indication of too much weight
though the type of horse should also be taken into consideration.
The majority of ‘happy hackers’ get enough energy over the summer months from
grass alone, though some can benefit from a vitamin/mineral supplement such as
a horse lick in a tub which can be positioned in the field. For very good doers it
may be necessary to restrict grass intake by strip grazing with electric fencing, also
to prevent laminitiis.
Horses do need a steady supply of food to keep their digestion running smoothly
so they should never be put on a ‘crash diet’.
If feeding a hard feed, consider also whether you are feeding your horse more
calories than they really need. Feeding an overweight horse more calories won’t
give it more energy for work, but it will create more fat. Try to make titbits and
treats the exception rather than the rule.
A brisk walk or steady trot will burn more fat than faster work such as canter.

FRIENDLY, KNOWLEDGEABLE ADVICE – WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?
Oak Farm is situated just two minutes from the A50 Field Head Island. Take the Thornton/Botcheston exit from the island. Once you pass the
Islamic Foundation on your left, take the next left turn (signposted to Ratby). It is the first farm 200 yards down this road on the left hand side.
