ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com Dear Friends, Having reflected briefly upon the understanding of marriage in the Old Testament we turn to the New Testament. St. Paul in his le;er to the Ephesians states: “So also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church because we are members of his body. ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.’ This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church (Chapter 5:28-32).” The union of a husband and a wife is like the union of Christ with his church. St. Paul calls this reality a “mystery” (“mysterion” in Greek). This is translated by St. Augusne as “sacrament” (“sacramentum” in Lan). Chrisan marriage is an external sign of Christ’s love – a sacrament. It is a total lifelong commitment that mirrors Christ’s love for his church. In the first part of this passage, St. Paul – like the Lord in the Gospels – quotes from the Book of Genesis and reaffirms marriage as the union of one man and one woman which by its nature is faithful and lifelong. Conjugal acts which are proper to marriage express and strengthen the unity of the persons as well as parcipate by their very nature in the creave power of God’s love. It is this posive understanding of marriage and the use of the gi& of sexual expression within marriage which explains why some acons are condemned as sinful – harmful to the human person and an impediment to true freedom and union with God. Christ always loves the sinner but he clearly calls people away from sin. “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more” (John 8:11). The New Testament understands incest, prostuon, adultery, fornicaon, and homosexual acts as sinful because they are misuses of the gi& of sex. In various ways each of the acons listed by St. Paul in his First Le;er to the Corinthians (and other places as well) fail to be truly unive or potenally procreave. They fail to be acons which are authenc as they take place outside of that total, faithful and permanent mutual gi& of self to another which is marriage. In the second part of the passage from the Le;er to the Ephesians (“This is a great mystery, but I speak in July 26, 2015 reference to Christ and the church”) St. Paul sees in marriage a sign of our relaonship with Christ, and in the love of Christ for us a revelaon of what marriage is meant to be. The New Testament frequently refers to Christ as the “bridegroom”. We read in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “The unity of Christ and the Church, head and members of one Body, also implies the disncon of the two within a personal relaonship. This aspect is o&en expressed by the image of bridegroom and bride. The theme of Christ as Bridegroom of the Church was prepared for by the prophets and announced by John the Bapst. The Lord referred to himself as the ‘bridegroom’. The Apostles speaks of the whole Church and each of the faithful , members of his Body, as a bride ‘betrothed’ to Christ the Lord so as to become but one spirit with him. The Church is the spotless bride of the spotless Lamb. ‘Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her, that he might sancfy her.’ He has joined her to himself in an everlasng covenant and never stops caring for her as for his own body.’ (#796) Some concluding remarks next week. In Christ, Rev. David A. Whitestone, Pastor Why Marriage (Still) Matters – August 8 Many Catholics want to defend and articulate the importance of authentic marriage, but feel unequipped to do so.
