In Spring 2006, our company's "ALTIS" and "SOLON" were the only Greek olive oil brands that were awarded with two stars by the "Superior Taste Award" test which was organized by the International Taste & Quality Institute. In 2007, “SOLON” was entered for the competition again, winning the two stars award for a second time, while in 2009 both SOLON and ALTIS were distinguished again with two stars. GREEK EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL The Traditional Value OLIVE OIL The history behind the name Mardonius, alas! You lead us to do battle against a people who fight not for money but for the sake of virtue,” exclaimed a distraught Persian officer to his general, having heard that Olympic champions received only an unpretentious crown made from an olive branch –the kotinos- as their reward for victory at the Games. This remark was reportedly made, according to the Greek historian Herodotus, before the Persians and the Greeks confronted one another at Thermopiles in 430 B.C.. A kotinos was always fashioned from a branch cut off the same sacred wild olive tree growing beside the temple of Zeus, in the ALTIS olive plantation at Olympia. It was awarded only to Olympic champions Olive oil through the centuries More than 3000 years ago, at the crossroads of East and West, in a very small country where a grand civilization flourished, also flourished a valuable fruit: the olive. The Minoans in Crete were the first people to cultivate the olive tree. In the prolific Greek myth tradition there was bound to be another version as well: that the olive tree first appeared in Athens as a “divine gift”, playing a central part in the naming of the city. Athens wins a competition with Poseidon by offering Athenians the most valuable gift. An olive tree. Whatever the details of the story, one thing is certain. Again and again through the centuries, the olive tree proved the most valuable gift for the Greeks! Its importance to them has always been paramount. Greeks loved the olive tree, learned to cultivate it, to collect its fruit, extract its exceptional juice and consider it valuable for their lives Olive Oil – A key to better health Olive oil, apart from being one the most valuable elements in the dietary pyramid, is the only source of fats in the food chain. Its nutritive value is mainly the result of its main ingredient, oleina, a monounsaturated fat that promotes the development of bones and marrow, helps to maintain balance in the metabolism and fight oxidization which lies at the root of all the serious diseases of modern day living. Especially with regard to cardiovascular diseases the action of the olive oil is indeed unparalleled. Due to its fatty acid composition, it has a beneficial effect in terms of controlling cholesterol levels. No other naturally produced oil has as high a percentage of monounsaturates – mainly oleic acid – in its composition as olive oil. Olive Oil – A key to better health - cnt Olive Oil has been endowed with polyphenoles and vitamins E & K -two natural antioxidants- that delay aging and assist in the restoration of body tissues, both internal and external. It also creates a defensive mechanism against cancer, atherosclerosis, liver disorders and inflammations and acts as a shield against infections. Doctors and dieticians point out the need to include olive oil, and particularly extra virgin olive oil in our diet, not merely as a vital nutritive food but also for preventive and curative purposes. Olive oil is a panacea, the perfect oil for all and Greece, the country with the highest percentage production of extra virgin olive oil worldwide, comes to make a decisive contribution to the protection of our good health. Olive presses, which are as a rule small units with traditional methods, are part of the joint effort to achieve everybody’s goal fully: to have the olive oil come out perfect and genuine. Greece is one of the three largest olive oil producing countries in the world. It is, however, the only one with a production in extra virgin olive oil that tops 80%. What does Greece mean for olive oil TODAY - 11 million inhabitants - 3,3 million families - 450 thousand families are “olive oil producers” (13,5% of total population) - 112 million olive trees all over Greece - 13 kg/capita consumption per year (No. 1 world wide) -Yearly average production : 220 - 300 thousand tons (>10% of total world production) - Local Consumption : 120 - 130 thousand tons - The rest is exported mainly as bulk to “upgrade” the quality of Italian and Spanish olive oil Our Company’s OLIVE OIL - ALTIS Altis olive oil Altis has been manufacturing olive oil in Greece for over 40 years and is recognised as “the expert” of the Greek olive oil market. The Altis range is the result of a long tradition of selection and blending of the best olive oils since 1967. The brand is trusted for its high quality. The strong brand equity and particularly high brand recognition yields a leading market position for Altis in the branded retail market. Altis olive oil Altis Olive oil: undisputed market leader in Greece with a 36,5% market share by value in 2011, far ahead of the closest competitor Minerva with c. 24% market share.
