Dear Families,
Dear Parent and Guardians,
It has been a pleasure to grow and learn alongside you
and your child this year. Citrus Springs Elementary is an
amazing school, with an amazing staff, and AMAZING
students! As we have worked together to ensure
the very best this year and students have worked
diligently to show what they know on state assessments,
we know that our work has just begun. When I think of
May, I think, “When you think you’re done, you’ve only
just begun.” May is the month filled with expansive
learning across content areas in all grade levels. Students
know the routines, procedures, and processes and are
able to excel in their application of knowledge. Your
partnership in your child’s academic achievement is truly
appreciated!
It is with great pride and excitement that I
write this letter of introduction to you as the
newly appointed Principal of Citrus Springs
Elementary for the 2016-2017 school year. I
possess over fourteen years of educational
experience. I was a classroom teacher for Grades 3, 4 and 5 at
Forest Ridge Elementary. My most recent administrative
experience has been shaped by three years of successful
leadership as Assistant Principal at Rock Crusher
Elementary and four years as an Assistant Principal at
Forest Ridge Elementary. I am excited to bring my skills as
an educational leader to your son/daughter’s school and to
work with you as a partner in education to ensure your
child’s success.
May is a month filled with activities beyond the
instructional day. We are excited to present a Title 1
sponsored event on Thursday, May 12 called “Moving on
Up.” This is an opportunity for families to come and join
us for dinner, from 5:00-6:00 pm, and then explore and
learn more about your child’s grade level for the 20162017 school year. You will see samples of work, activities,
projects, and academic standards for their upcoming
grade level. At 6:30 pm, families can gather back in the
cafeteria to enjoy our WILDlife presentation. We are
looking forward to meeting and greeting some interesting
critters from our local Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park.
Along with the fabulous CSES Team, I will work hard to
continue the legacy of success established at Citrus Springs
Elementary by building strong relationships with parents,
students, staff, and community partners. We will focus on
character education initiatives, fostering a nurturing, safe
environment for children, use of data to inform instruction,
consistent implementation of newly adopted direct
instruction strategies to increase students’ achievement, and
providing exciting and challenging enrichment opportunities
for all students.
We value the input of our families and ask that you participate in our CSE Parent Survey. Your input allows us to
reflect on what’s working and what we can improve on as
we plan for next year. If you have not completed the
survey, I would appreciate your time in providing us with
your feedback. The Parent Survey is available on our
school website or you may go directly to the link at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WY537Y8.
Thank you for everything you do to support us and your
child’s academic success!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Hetland
Principal
Citrus Springs Elementary
I anticipate a most successful year as our team and I support
the academic, social, and emotional growth of your child here
at Citrus Springs Elementary School. During the course of the
year, it is my hope that we will work together to provide the
students of Citrus Springs the best possible opportunities in
preparing them to be world class citizens ready to master the
challenges of the real world with a solid foundation
created here at our school. As Principal, my door is always
open and I welcome your input.
As a reminder, our Open House is on Thursday, August 4,
2016. I look forward to working with the CSES Team,
parents and students.
Thank you for your continued support.

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month. As the SpeechLanguage Pathologist at CSES, I am often asked about ways
that parents can help their children develop and improve
their speech and language skills. One of the most effective
and inexpensive activities that I recommend is simply reading with your child. In a study observing mothers and 12month-olds engaging in different types of play, including
book reading, researcher Julie Gros-Louis and her team
found that not only do babies make more speech sounds
during reading than when playing with toys or puppets, but
also that mothers are more responsive to sounds their child
makes while reading together than during the other
activities. Another study has demonstrated that playing
with tech toys (for example, those that make electronic
sounds/music and have flashing lights) tends to provide
fewer conversational turns, parent responses and specific
vocabulary use. I have read that if you read just one book a
day to your child, they will have been read 1825 books by
their 5th birthday. EVERY BOOK COUNTS – and don’t stop at
age 5! Keep using books to teach new vocabulary, to point
out specific speech sounds, to label actions and objects in
pictures, to talk about making predictions and inferences,
and to stimulate discussions about various topics. The more
words a child hears, the greater his/her academic success.
As a bonus, shared book reading helps develop a positive
bond between parent and child!! Mrs. Parrish, SpeechLanguage Pathologist

Car Seat Tips…..Did You Know ?
1. A car seat is the only equipment you will buy for your child that has the potential to save his life.
2. Most car seats expire in 6 years….. Check yours!
3. Four out of five car seats are not installed right. We can check yours in about 20 min.. Just call for an
appointment.
4. Kids should ride facing the back of the car until age 2.
5. Kids should ride in a harnessed car seat until they reach the maximum height and weight for their seat.
6. Kids should ride in a booster until they are 4 feet 9 inches tall. This could be age 8 to 12.
7. Do you need a new car seat for your child? Citrus County has two sites where you can get a new seat for your child.
Eligibility is based on financial need. There is a limit of one seat per child. The cost is $20 per seat and an appointment is needed.
To make an appointment: Call Sue 352-563-9939 ext.235 at the ELC office, Crystal River or
