It is W ells G uthrie's belief that Picpoul blanc, one of the lesser-known
white R hône grape varietals, has a trem endous future in C alifornia.
Therefore he has high expectations of the heritage clones that he has
planted on an exceptionally gravelly portion of our estate vineyard in
H ealdsburg.
W I N E M A K E R ’ S N OT E S :
D irectly translated from F rench, Picpoul m eans "lip stinger." This relatively
obscure varietal produces wines with bright acidity and m inerality,
underpinned by a clean citrus flavor. O ur first release of Picpoul is intensely
arom atic, with a perfum ed nose of fresh herbs, citrus zest and white
flowers, followed by a m outhwatering finish.
V I N TAG E N OT E S :
The 2012 vintage was a welcom e relief following the challenges of 2010
and 2011. A wet winter was balanced by a m oderate, slightly dry spring,
with bud break and veraison occurring several weeks later than usual.
B estowing optim al conditions for slow, even ripening, a long Indian
sum m er extended into early O ctober. H arvest com m enced approxim ately
two weeks later than previous years, and was condensed into a few short
weeks, with all of our fruit in by N ovem ber 1.
