Situated on the slopes of the Alpine
foothills near Treviso, Vittorio
Veneto is a union of two ancient
villages, Ceneda and Serravalle,
which both have a rich historical

and artistic past. This area’s more
recent history is closely linked to
World War I, which came to an end
in these very lands, as the Museo
del Cenedese and Museo della
Battaglia can attest. An absolute
must-see is the monumental set of
steps starting near the Duomo di
Serravalle (cathedral) and leading
to the Sanctuary of Santa Augusta.

Here you will also find the bike
path bordering the Meschio River,
the waters of which maintain a
constant temperature of 11° C and,
for this reason, were once used for
forging the famous blades. Keep
going south and you will come to
Conegliano (2), which is synonymous
with fine drinking, boasting green
hills (1) adorned with Prosecco
vines. The backdrop is dominated
by the castle, which now houses the
Museo Civico bearing the vestiges
of medieval days. Conegliano is also
known for being the birthplace of
Giovanni Battista Cima, a painter
who lived a mysterious life and
created exceptional artwork, as one
can observe in his alter painting
displayed in the Sala dei Battuti
of the Duomo. After leaving
Conegliano, you’ll pass by Susegana
and the Castello di San Salvatore
to your right, where the Counts of
Collalto reigned over the surrounding
feud. The course of the Piave River
marks the border between the hills
and plains. Along the way, vast
stretches of Venetian farmland all

of a sudden seem to take the place
of the gently rolling hills. The
Montello is the last hill flanking the
route to the right until you reach
Montebelluna; from there, you’ll go
downhill towards Treviso (3). The
silhouettes of the hills gradually
give way to the flatland where we
can catch a glimpse of livestock
farms, high-quality croplands,
manmade wetlands, and some of
the most dynamic business clusters
in Europe. Once you’ve reached the
city’s protective walls, you can go
through the monumental gateway of
San Tomaso and head into the centre
to Piazza dei Signori, a popular
gathering place where you can
breathe in the exciting atmosphere
of the capital city in the province,
which in medieval times was known
as “Marca gioiosa et amorosa”
(province of joy and courtly love).
