Thanks be to thee, my Lord Jesus Christ, for all
the benefits which Thou hast given me, for all

O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother,

Message from St Mary’s
Dear Friends,
As I concluded my assembly for the
children of our Primary School
recently I showed them a small item
which I carry, amongst the coins, in
my purse.
A few years ago I was approached by
a young man from my parish who'd
found himself in hard times following redundancy
through sickness (and no fault of his own). He shared
with me his sad story and told me of how he had lost
everything: his job, his accommodation, his dreams and
even most of his friends through this long-term sickness.
This man was, by the time he spoke to me, making some
progress and was in improving health. He'd even
managed to persuade a local businessman to let him
work, voluntarily, for a few hours a week, to build up
his credibility in work again. He was a bright and
determined man and I admired his strength and resolve
to keep striving.
This young man’s story had a significant impact on me
and not least because it's message was that it wasn't
foolishness or irresponsibility which resulted in him
sheltering under a cardboard box during those long, cold
winter nights, and when the opportunity came for the
local churches to take warm ‘survival kits’ to him, and
others like him, in the town – at this autumnal time of
year – I was only too pleased to play my part.
The small square of corrugated cardboard which I carry
in my purse is a reminder of that young man; of the
struggle he had through that tough winter, and of his
determination, with support, which enabled him to find a
way through it. As I select coins from my purse to pay
for groceries for my family I am deeply thankful that I
can, and the cardboard square reminds me not to be
judgemental about why some people can't do that today.
I have some cardboard squares available if having one
for your purse or wallet would help you too.
I wish you a blessed and plentiful Autumn.
Beth

St Mary's, with additional supervision between 9.00 and 5.00. The club will be a wonderful mix
of activities and themes. Talk to Marisa Hayes if you have any queries. It is vital that parents
complete a registration form, available on the church website: www.ringmerchurch.org.uk and
return it to the Vicarage or email it to [email protected] by Monday 24th October.
Village Clubs’ Service – We invite every member of all our Ringmer clubs and organisations to
this annual service taking place on Sunday, 23rd October at 5 pm. We hope the earlier time will
enable the younger members of our clubs to come along. As usual there will be refreshments
after the service.
All Souls’ Service of Memorial and Thanksgiving - We invite you to this special Service on
Wednesday, 2nd November at 6 pm in St Mary’s. During the service we shall remember loved
ones who have died and lighting candles for them. We shall remember specifically those for
whom we have held services during the last two years but if you would like anyone else
remembered by name, please contact Shirley Squires on 01273 812417.
St Mary’s Small Grants Scheme – We are pleased that the first of our monthly grants has been
awarded. It went to Ringmer Football Club to enable them to improve their youth training
facilities. If your club or group would like to apply please see our website
(www.ringmerchurch.org.uk) for further details and an application form, or contact Shirley
Squires.
St Mary’s Churchyard – Those of you who visit the churchyard across the road from the
church will notice that we have applied for planning permission to put a better surface on the
footpaths in this area. We hope this will improve the situation this winter and prevent the area
becoming quite so muddy.
Policies for volunteers, investment, conflict of interest, risk management, complaints and
Pay – St Mary’s has agreed these policies and copies are now available on the church website
(www.ringmerchurch.org.uk) and a hard copy is also kept in church.
Flutes and Friends Concert: There will be another Flutes and Friends concert given by Anne
Hodgson and her flute students at St Mary’s on Sunday, 16th October at 2 pm. Please join us for
a feast of flute music with tea and cakes for all afterwards. There will be a retiring collection in
aid of St Peter and St James Hospice.

The MU were delighted to welcome Mary MacPherson to speak about
Family Support Work – a Sussex charity reaching out to help families with
food, practical help and access to other resources. We heard how the work
of FSW has changed since it was founded in 1890 and how the demands for
support services remains great across our county. It was great to hear about
success stories and how FSW and MU have come together to share services
and offer holidays for families in need.
Three members of the Ringmer MU joined nearly 2000 others attending the 140 year
celebrations at Winchester Cathedral and have returned inspired by the opportunities that
membership of this worldwide organisation brings. Our branch is part of a membership of 4
million people in 83 countries. After hearing from Archbishop Justin and the leaders of the MU,
we are keen to take up the challenge of putting “Faith in Action”. More of this as we move
towards 2017….
Next month, we meet on 18 October and look forward to welcoming Ros Hutchinson, a tour
guide for London and the South East, who has herself helped women in other countries train to
become guides themselves and earn an income to support their families.
The Bert Errey Trust
The Trust was set up in memory of Rev'd Bert Errey (1918-1992). He was the Vicar of
Wolverton parish (Warwickshire) and retired to Ringmer where he assisted with services.
The Bert Errey Trust aims to bring together two dominant strands in Bert's thinking; his lifelong
interest and concern for the 'Third World' (stemming from his own upbringing in the West
Indies) and equally his longstanding commitment to the ecumenical movement.
The trust gives grants to assist with travel costs etc. for teenagers and young people from
Ringmer and Wolverton (Warwickshire) to visit centres such as Taizé and Iona, or to attend
ecumenical work-camps, workshops and conferences where they can meet Christians from
different countries, cultures and denominations and thus gain a wider vision of God's kingdom.
Since the trust started in 1992 about 20 grants have been given to young people from Ringmer
and Wolverton. They have varied in amount from £30 given to cover the cost of travel to a
Diocesan conference for young people in Mayfield to over £200 to cover the cost of travel to
South Africa, where the recipient was to work as a volunteer in Kurland Township.
The trustees are now inviting applications from both parishes with a view to making money
available for travel next year. Application forms, with further details, are available from Anne
Stamper (Secretary of Ringmer PCC and Clerk to the Trust) or from the church website.

‘Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house
are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And
if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I
am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know. Thomas said to
Him, ‘Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how we can know the way?’ Jesus said to
him, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’

Notices
Protect yourself and those around you from flu
Dr David Roche, GP
Now that the flu season is upon us again, GPs will be
sending out invitations for yearly flu vaccinations to the
people who could really benefit from it.
Flu mainly affects the respiratory system and the digestive
tract, causing aches and pains, a high temperature and sometimes chest infections and
pneumonia. It is better avoided by children, pregnant women, those over 65 and those have
other health conditions to contend with.
Having the flu vaccine doesn’t guarantee you won’t get flu but it does reduce the risk for seven
or eight people out of every 10 who have it. Plus it will reduce the chance of you getting serious
or potentially life-threatening complications from it.
GPs have been asked to work particularly hard to encourage pregnant women to take the
vaccination up. A new study offers reassuring evidence that pregnant women who are
immunised against flu reduce their risk of losing their babies through any complications caused
by getting flu.
If you have a long term health condition and do not get an invitation to vaccinate, please do
contact your GP practice for advice. Think of the flu vaccine as like locking your home to
protect against burglars. It doesn’t mean someone can’t get in, but it makes it far less likely!
I hope this article helps persuade you that taking up your flu vaccination is a really good idea. If
you have any concerns please speak to your doctor.
This year’s national vaccination campaign will focus on:
 All children aged two to seven on 31 August 2016.
 Primary school-aged children.
 Those aged six months to under 65 years in clinical risk groups which includes chronic
(long-term) diseases such as chest, heart, kidney disease, neurological disease, diabetes,
sickle cell disease and weakened immune system conditions.
 Pregnant women.
 Those aged 65 years and over.
 Those in long-stay residential care homes.
 Carers
There are all sorts of myths about the flu vaccine and here are a few answers to them:
 It doesn’t contain any live virus so you can’t catch flu from it.
 Having the flu vaccine doesn’t protect you against other viral infections like coughs and
colds.
 Having had a flu vaccine in the past doesn’t mean you’re protected this year as the virus
keeps changing.
Ringmer Good Neighbours
Jo Linehan
Ringmer Good Neighbours has provided help to a number of people in
the two months since it was launched. The initiator of the scheme,
Mandy Beswick, has recently left the village to return to her home in
Hertfordshire but she has handed on the running of the scheme to several
people in the village who will be manning the phone in future. The
telephone number remains the same 07340 118758 and the manned
times remain as 10-11 am and 3-4 pm.

Although generally most of the 'big' work improving the Village Hall was completed a while
ago, snagging is under way as well as fitting out the Cecil Gates Store. Rather than have it filled
with standard sized shelves and cupboards, a lot of effort is going in to provide facilities that
meet the needs of individual groups and thus maximise the use of the space. Being able to store
the chairs away from the hall has made a big improvement for those using the Jack Hart Hall
and also has enabled us to keep the Foyer clear of chair racks and other hazards.
There are two community events in October and one in November with proceeds being donated
to the Village Hall - full details are elsewhere in this Village News but as a reminder:
Saturday 22nd October, 10am – 2pm 'Ringmer Hub Societies Fair' More than 20 stalls
representing local groups and societies are available to view. Free admission. Light refreshments
will also be available.
Saturday, 29th October, 'Christmas Gifts and Crafts Fair' in the Jack Hart Hall. 20+ stalls have
already committed. Do come and get your Christmas Shopping underway.
Saturday, 5th November, 12-13.30, Souper Saturday - Come and enjoy homemade soups; £2.50
for a bowl of soup and bread plus a refill. There will be at least four different soups to choose
from. Afterwards there will be tea, coffee, cakes/flapjacks available for £1.
St Mary’s Christmas Fair

Black Friday so let’s hope there is plenty of cheer! As well
as the usual range of stalls, books, DVDs, cakes and
gourmet, toys and games, there will be the Grand Draw and
a superb range of refreshments during the morning.
Additional help

team effort. Donations of good quality items such as
tombola prizes and to sell on each of the stalls are

Ringmer Evening W.I.
Teresa Keen
Our speaker for September, Mr John Davey, proved to be totally absorbing.
He told us about "The Lost Industries of Lewes" illustrated by slides,
including the earliest known photograph of a ship, a photo of the SS Halifax
dating from 1855. Industries included iron & steel, cement, paper making,
printing and ship building, the river being a major transportation route. We
learned that the previously thriving ship building industry was made redundant by the coming of
the railway in 1846 and the last ship to be built in Lewes was the SS Lewes Castle in 1839.
Lewes was one of the first towns in Sussex to have a pumping station and built a gas works
before Brighton. We also learned that at one time Lewes had 7 major breweries and 70 public
houses for a population of around 7,000.
We are now looking forward to ‘Colour Me Gorgeous’ in October and also to the new season at
Lewes Little Theatre, with "Steel Magnolias" being the first production on our agenda. The
walking group enjoyed a stroll to Firle Beacon this month and next month we are planning to go
to Sheffield Park to see the colours of the autumn leaves.
We are always pleased to welcome visitors and new members. We meet on the first Tuesday of
the month at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall and if you would like further information, please
contact Teresa Keen on 01273 813758.

Tiddlers and Toddlers have returned from our summer holidays with lots of
energy for the new term. So far we have enjoyed getting messy with potato
painting, and feeling autumnal making hedgehog pictures out of fallen leaves.
What we have enjoyed most though is being able to use the outdoor space to the
side of the Village Hall. During the summer holiday we had the grass area fenced
so that it is secure for children to play outside, and they absolutely love it! It’s wonderful to see
them running about and riding bikes out there, as well as looking for bugs and creatures in the
hedges.
Coming up this month is our famous nearly new sale which is being held on the 8th October at
the Village Hall. We will be selling everything you could possibly need when having, raising or
minding little ones, as well as tea and cakes. Entry is just £1 per family, and we will be open
from 10.30 – 12.30. Please do come along and support us, and we promise that you will find lots
of bargains!
Ringmer Tiddlers and Toddlers meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 9.30 – 11.30am during
term time in the Village Hall. Entry is £2 per family. We also run a music group at Ringmer
Children’s Centre on Tuesdays from 1-2pm, and a playgroup at Ringmer Children’s Centre on
Wednesdays from 10-11.30am (entry for these groups is £1 per family).

During September we enjoyed our social in the Village Hall when Bingo was
re-introduced to the club. At the Kurling session later in the month, we had
good fun competing against each other. This month we will be enjoying a dvd
of past events, visiting Wakehurst Place and, of course, playing Kurling at the
end of the month. If you are interested in joining our club as a member or a
friend, contact Coralie (813596).

Comma - Perfectly Punctuated
Michael Blencowe, Sussex Wildlife Trust
Ding, ding. Last orders at the butterfly bar. The party is over. All
summer the blues, whites, browns, skippers, hairstreaks and all
our other butterflies have mated in the meadows and fornicated in
our flower beds. The results of this butterfly bonding will pass the
winter as eggs, caterpillars and chrysalises. Even those butterflies
tough enough to endure the winter as adults will have turned in early to get a good six months
sleep. But there’s still one species left knocking back the nectar until the bitter end.
The comma is one ragged looking butterfly – it
is unlike any other British species. With its
jagged-edged wings it looks like it’s been busy
brawling with a bird’s beak. The wings glow the
fiery orange of hell. In France the butterfly’s
devilish good looks have earned it the name
Robert Le Diablo – Robert the Devil.
But this angular attire is perfect for a butterfly
that will be spending the winter hidden amongst
dark dead leaves. Its crinkle-cut wings are dark
underneath and when it closes them the comma
chameleon vanishes. Yet the centre of this dark

facade is punctured by a punctuation mark –

a small silver ‘c’, the comma that gives the
Sussex Wildlife Trust
butterfly its English name. In America a similar
looking butterfly has a comma and a dot and is called the question mark.

In October you’ll still find the commas across
Sussex stocking up on sugars from late flowering ivy
or rotting fruits in preparation for its winter-long big
sleep. It’s not always been this way. Certainly many,
many years ago the comma was widespread across
Sussex but by the 1820s the comma had
mysteriously vanished from most of England.
Lugubrious lepidopterists mourned ‘the butterfly of
our youth has left us for good and all’. The decline
in England’s hop industry must have had an effect
along with new techniques of bine-burning and
washing the crops with insecticides. In the 1930s an
increase in comma sightings marked the start of the
butterfly’s re-conquest of England. This time, with
hardly any hops left to munch, the comma grasped
the nettle as the main food plant for its caterpillar.
Now the butterfly is regularly being seen across
Scotland too. The comma’s comeback continues.
