Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,,
It gives me great joy to announce that Archbishop Myers has appointed Fr. Antonio N. Kuizon as a parochial vicar here at St.
John’s, effective January 14th. Fr. Tony was ordained in Massin, Philippines, on April 1, 1977, and became a priest of the
Archdiocese of Newark on December 2, 2003. Having spent the majority of his priestly ministry in our Archdiocese in the
parishes of Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Bartholomew, both in Scotch Plains, he brings many years of priestly ministry in
both countries to our parish family. Due to a previous commitment for a family baptism on the West Coast, Fr. Tony will join us
on Monday, January 19th. I am sure you will welcome him as you do each and every priest who comes to serve in our parish.
+++
Through our Lord’s Baptism in the Jordan River, and his eventual suffering, death, and resurrection, Christ sanctified baptism
and made it the Sacrament of Salvation. Normally in today’s practice, infants are baptized after their parents have been suitably
prepared. (For requirements, see p. 2.) Children of catechetical age (7+) and adults can also be prepared for baptism through a
more extensive process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. At today’s 9am Mass, several children will be accepted as
Catechumens, and they will continue a two-year process of instruction. At today’s 10:30am Mass, one unbaptized adult will be
accepted into a similar advanced level two-year program, and some other previously baptized adults will be welcomed as
candidates for a single-year preparation for the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Let us keep them all in our prayers.
+++
We continue to receive reservations for our Memorial Bricks for our Grotto project behind the Parish Life Center. Submission of
reservations should be made by January 31st. Please use one of the forms at the exits of the church to record your information
and return it with payment to the rectory. You are allowed up to 13 letters and spaces per line (16 on the largest brick); extra
lines after the first three are an additional $15 per line for the larger-sized bricks. If you need help composing the text, please let
me know what you would like to say and I will happily help you with the arrangement. Should a payment plan be necessary,
please let me know. I hope many of you will want to be part of this historic project to provide some beautiful and functional
outdoor meditation space in honor of our Blessed Mother and some of the saints.
Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor
Reflection on Today’s Readings
We often think about baptism in terms of the washing away of sin. Sometimes we speak of it as dying and rising with Christ.
These ways of thinking and speaking about what happens in baptism are true and important. But reflection on the event of
Jesus’ baptism opens up new perspectives on our own baptism. In baptism we, like Jesus, are anointed with God’s Spirit and
declared to be God’s beloved sons and daughters, with whom God is well pleased. In baptism too we see the heavens torn open
and the ways of God made manifest to us. In baptism, we too conquer the world through faith.
Also in baptism we, like Jesus, are given a commission. The Spirit anoints us as priests, prophets, and kings; in these roles we
are called to lives of prayer, proclamation, and service. We are called, as the prophet Isaiah exhorts us, to “seek the Lord while
he may be found” and to “call on him while he is near.” In fact, in our baptism we are given a share in Jesus’ saving work.
Of course, this can seem quite daunting. It is daunting to think that every child or adult who is baptised is given the task of
sharing in Jesus’ priestly, prophetic, and royal ministries. Lest we become overwhelmed, we must also remember that at Jesus’
baptism the heavens are torn open and the Spirit is poured out. We do nothing on our own. We do all through God’s Spirit.
“May the heavens be torn open and may you, O Holy Spirit of God, descend on us in your power, so that we might be faithful
followers of Jesus. Amen.”
Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!
“After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.” Mark 1:7
We are put on this earth to love God, love our neighbor and make disciples. How many times does our own pride and ego get in
the way of fulfilling God’s plan for us? Humbling ourselves before God and putting Him first in all things should be our top
priority.

Three Things to Know About the U. S. Bishop’s Recent Discussion on Catholic Schools
(Alliance for Catholic Education on Tuesday, December 9, 2014.)
Catholic Schools are succeeding in vital missions.
They are providers of quality education and character formation to students from all backgrounds, and
catalysts for quality engagement in parish and civic life.
Clergy and lay people share a responsibility to champion America’s Catholic school tradition and boost
today’s successes.
The Most Rev. Daniel Flores, Bishop of Brownsville and chair of the USCCB Committee on Cultural
Diversity in the Church, stated that for generations Catholic schools have offered a high quality education and
character formation. Clergy and lay people should partner to ensure that Catholic schools continue to grow,
succeed and offer a quality education to children from diverse backgrounds.
The Church’s outreach to minority families because they are crucial to the future of the Church and
the nation.
Catholic schools provide a path out of poverty for Latinos and other minorities and help close the
achievement gap for students. All students, including minority students, experience the benefits of Catholic
schools, such as 87% high school graduation rates.
The Bishops could have been speaking about Transfiguration, whose mission it has been
to offer the finest quality education to a diverse student body……..
