MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF
ID-DAR TAL-PROVIDENZA
Id-Dar tal-Providenza is very dear to the Maltese
people. On New Year’s Day RTK 4 Charity offers
everyone another opportunity to show their love,
support and generosity towards Id-Dar during its
annual fundraising event which from this year will be
called, Festa ta’ Ġenerożità because it is indeed a great
manifestation of generosity.
As part of the fundraising activities during Festa ta’
Ġenerożità , the Annual Art Auction will again be held ,
and without the generosity of over eighty local and
foreign artists who have donated one or more pieces
of art to be auctioned on the day, this event could not
be taking place and I would like to thank each and every
one of them.
These works of art will be displayed at the Parliament
of Malta between 15 and 28 December 2015. On New
Year’s Day they will then be displayed at Id-Dar talProvidenza.

2. Vittoriosa
Matthew Kassar
Acrylic on Newspaper Collage; 72cm x 49 cm
Starting Bid: €300
Matthew Kassar (1968) studied art from an early age at ‘The Malta Society
of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce’ and later on, he took art lessons at the
6th Form Msida, under his mentor, Alfred Chircop. He followed a four year
diploma course in painting at ‘The Malta School of Arts’ under Harry Alden,
Charles Cassar and Joseph L. Mallia. He took a one year course in Ceramics
at ‘Targa Gap’, and he studied under the artist, Roberto Cippolone, where he
worked for a month in his studio at ‘La Bottega’ in Florence.
He had various solo exhibitions and also took part in many collective
exhibitions, both locally and abroad.
Matthew in his voyage, interprets his paintings with great sensitivity and
sensibility. His technique produces sculptural illusions. By choosing the right
piece of newspaper cuttings, Matthew manages to intermingle his paintings
and collages, to produce certain effects. And since he uses gesso, varnish,
paint and sand, these give texture and like a big jigsaw puzzle, he produces
real, acute and clear subjects, some geometrical and some figuratively. The
paintings present the viewer with an illusion of forms and volumes.
Subjects vary from churches, chapels, portals, balconies, still lives, figures,
city scapes etc. Matthew’s creative spirit makes one marvel, how from an
object that usually gets outdated, he can make use of it to intermingle with
history and scenery, and makes it throb with reality. He produces an actual
dreamy atmosphere of serenity, peace, tranquillity and rest.

Maria Rossella Dalmas
Acrylic; 70cm x 50cm
Starting Bid: €350
Maria Rossella Dalmas was born at Hamrun in 1948. She is the daughter of
the late watercolour artist and photographer Giuseppe Cassar. She was
educated at St. Dorothy’s Convent School, Mdina and qualified as a
pharmacist from the University of Malta. She works as a community
pharmacist. Basically Rossella is a self-taught artist but was influenced by her
father mostly as regards composition. Her style is however entirely her own.
She developed her velvety pastel like effect in acrylics after many years of
experimenting. Acrylic, as a medium, is favoured because it is very fast drying
and extremely versatile. She took part in several collective exhibitions both
in Malta and abroad. She held a total of four solo exhibitions, of which three
at the Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta in 1993, 1994 and 2003. In 2005 her
fourth exhibition was held at the Valletta Vee Gee Bee Art Gallery. She had
two winning entries in the Mid Med Bank (now HSBC) competition held in
May 1996. She also won first prize in the Kreativa Competition organised by
the Institute of Visual Arts and an honourable mention in the First National
Art Competiton 2002 of the Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.
Rossella hopes to continue maturing in her art. She considers this a process
of self -discovery. Finding new ways of expressing herself makes it all very
exciting. Her subjects are commonplace but the interpretation is not.
Rossella feels that it is always best to paint what one is familiar with. The
transformation renders the commonplace poetic (and life bearable).

Born 10 May 1957. Returned to art in 2009 after a lapse of about 23 years. My
interest in the local environmental had an impact on my art and this led me
to develop an interest in plein air painting in oils.
Today I practice this with a group of plein air painters forming part of the
Plein Air Painters of Malta group. Have participated in a number of collective
exhibitions with the Mosaico group of artists, with both plein air paintings
and mixed media works.
Will participate in two collective Plein Air Painters of Malta exhibitions in

Alexia Coppini
Oil on canvas; 75cm x 60cm
Starting Bid: €300
Alexia Coppini is a Maltese painter who creates fantastic seascapes and
ethereal skies. The common thread in Alexia's paintings is representations
of big skies and vast seas. They represent the natural environment in the
most tranquil manner.
Each painting speaks for itself. Alexia lives by the sea and is therefore easily
absorbed by the beauty of the sea and the natural environment. Alexia's
paintings evoke a sense of the spiritual as well as the fluid nature of the sea,
and the light in the air creates a play with memory in timelessness.
The artist is versatile in various subjects, which include portraits, still life and
animals. She also has a great passion to draw and paint images from marine
and landscape. For her the natural environment is a great source of
inspiration.

Joseph Casapinta’s passion in watercolour painting is a testimony of the
great development in the mastery of this medium. Collections of
watercolour paintings have been exhibited both locally and abroad.
The last collection titled ‘A Maltese Postcard’ was exhibited in Germany in
August 2015. Joseph successfully shows that this delicate medium of
watercolour can be bold, rich and dramatic.
He is awfully intrigued to show the public that viewing the everyday life in
another way, by taking what is not first noticeable and then brings that into
focus, gives the viewers a new perception. His watercolour paintings make
us understand to see beauty and simplicity within complexity.

Winston Hassall
Acrylic; 88cm x 50cm
Starting Bid: €350
Winston Hassall was born in Sale, England in 1949. He began his artistic career as a textile
artist in UK and Eire. Later in his life, his work required much travelling and this self-thought
artist soon fell in love with what Malta has to offer to someone with a keen eye for the local
landscape and colours. Married and residing in Valletta, Winston has been called "The Valletta
Artist" for his countless works highlighting our Capital's streetscapes, which make it the gem
it is. Known for using oil as his medium, during these last years he has found that watercolours and pen and ink enable him to produce striking effects of the Maltese urban scenery.
This talented artist has participated in various collective exhibitions including at the Stockport
Art Gallery in UK, the Mid-Med Bank Art Exhibition, "Convergence, an exhibition of European
Artists" and the Marsovin 80th Anniversary Exhibition, as well as other collective exhibitions
with prominent local artists. In 1999, one of his works was chosen to represent Malta in the
Winsor & Newton Millennium International Competition. The entry titles "Contending with
the Elements" brought out this artist's capabilities particularly by the style and use of mixed
mediums, poster paint and watercolours highlighted by gold pen and graphic pens to
highlight and enhance his feeling of weather-beaten and eroded Maltese architecture. By
painting directly on mounting-board, he has been able to produce striking effects in his work

John Vic Borg
Oil on Canvas; 16cm x 20cm
Starting Bid: €200
I was born in Mellieha, Malta on the 5th September 1971. My parents
emigrated to Australia when I was 9 months old. Ever since I could walk I
would always be found with pencils and paper in my hands drawing
whatever came to my mind. When my parents returned to Malta, I found it
hard to adjust at first, but I always found time to escape to another world
through drawing, where I would spend every free moment sketching,
bringing my imagination to life. It was during those years at school that my
teacher Mr Alfred Vella encouraged me to take art seriously and arranged
private art lessons for me with artist Mrs Doris Fenech from Mosta.
At the age of 10 I started using oils on canvas for the first time and quickly
fell in love with the medium and haven’t stopped using it since. Oils give me
a feeling of freedom to blend the colours as I please because they remain
crisp, sharp and vibrant without losing any texture. No matter how many
years may go by, a well kept painting will still look as if it has just left the
artist’s hands.

Henry Alamango
Mixed Media; 36cm x 48cm

Henry Alamango is a self-taught artist who has forever loved to transfer,
through paint onto paper, the love of nature that is etched in his upbringing.
However, it was not until relatively recently that he has thrown himself into
the art-scene, with a little discipline and a lot of enthusiasm.
Whilst Henry has travelled widely and enjoys painting on his trips, his
representational art is rooted in a love of all things Mediterranean, with
particularly strong impressions of the Maltese Islands.
Warm Mediterranean light and stone, strong sea and skies and an abundance
of colourful paraphernalia are profusely represented in his paintings.

Starting Bid: €200
Born in 1974, Charlot graduated in Art Education from the University of Malta
in 1996 and immediately took up ceramic studies under Julie Apap. His
artistic development is grounded in artistic discipline and his degree in Art
Education has reinforced this notion.
He studied design, colour, composition, history of art and have worked with
various media. Charlot firmly believes that, at least in so far as the arts are
concerned, one must first know the rules, and know them well for the
matter, before making any attempt to break them.
His most recent work reveals a continued fascination with landscape and
natural rock formations and an innate interest in line, intricate textural
qualities and rich Mediterranean colours.
Each work stems from a specific idea that is combined to his visual and
personal experiences and the possibilities that the clay offers to create
something that is essentially unique and beautiful.

Maria Cassar
Oil on Canvas; 50cm x 60cm
Starting Bid: €300
Maria Cassar started attending art lessons under Ray Pitrè. Subsequently,
for over ten years, Ms Cassar participated in art sessions at the studio of
Harry Alden. Under Alden’s guidance, Maria sharpened her eye and was
guided to look at things differently from an artistic point of view. This led
her to explore new styles and seek different solutions on how to express her
feelings in a more creative manner.
Maria Cassar’s pictures attest a longing for perfect beauty, for peace and
harmony, for a paradise on earth. There is great poetical vitality in her work.
Children feature prominently in nearly all the works. They appear playing,
many times on the shoreline. The young creatures possess anecdotal charm
and adopt natural tender poses as light strikes their bodies in a rainbow of
colours.
Ms Cassar took part in various collective exhibitions. In 2010 she showed her
works in a solo exhibition entitled ‘Images from Life’ at art..e gallery, Victoria,
Gozo. This was followed by other exhibitions in 2013 and 2015 at the same
gallery. Her paintings are to be found in various local private collections and

81. Homage to Casper - David Friedrich
Kenneth Zammit Tabona
Watercolour; 40cm x 55cm
Starting Bid: € 2000
Kenneth Zammit Tabona's paintings, illustrations and designs have baffled all
those art-lovers who feel happier if a "label" may be applied to a style.
His paintings have in time been described as caricatures, as naïve, as primitive,
as cartoons, as fantasy and in fact either all or none of these Labels apply! On a
more elevated plane he has been described as a painter of Nostalgia with a
capital N; depicting his Mediterranean homeland, Malta in its full blazing glory
of stony ochre and sapphire blue.
His architecture has been compared to Osbert Lancaster's while his people have
been compared to Botero's and recently Picasso's erotic drawings. The fact that
they evoke these labels and comparisons, none of which are quite right, makes
the whole exercise of trying to describe his pictures even more difficult.

Jacqueline Agius
Watercolour; 30cm x 40cm
Starting Bid: € 300
Jacqueline Agius is an emerging artist specialising in watercolour painting. As a child
growing up in a creative family art was never a difficult task. She was highly influenced
by her talented artistic father, Edwin Conti and cultivated a passion for architecture and
a love for drawing and painting. Her first formal artistic education
began when she studied art at St Joseph School, Blata l-Bajda. Later she followed
courses at the School of Art in Valletta. Jacqueline's paintings developed as the years
went by. However preferring watercolours she painted away at buildings and
landscapes, reflecting her everyday life and surroundings at the time. Upon the birth of
her two sons, her creativity took the shape of murals in the children's bedrooms. It was
only many years later that with the help of a couple of established artists she discovered
that finding new ways of expressing herself through painting was very exciting indeed.
Through all these years she knew there was in her heart the growing desire to someday
become an artist. That, fuelled by encouragement from family, mentors and friends
eventually found its way in 2007. From then on she intensely taught herself to be fluent
in watercolour. She embarked on a professional artist career and started exhibiting
publicly. Jacqueline has participated in many collective shows in Malta and Gozo. Her
most recent solo exhibition 'Brushed Thoughts' held at The Palace in Sliema, was in
December 2009. She loves the landscape with its wide open spaces, the glittering sea
and particularly the warm stone buildings standing proud against the skyline. Her works
don't only capture recognisable landmarks, they capture the light, colour and forms of
the locations whilst offering personal interpretations of those places. Her watercolours
can be found in private and corporate collections both locally and abroad. Jacqueline
lives in Attard with her husband and sons.

Joe Ellul Vincenti
Ceramic Sculpture; 46 cm
Starting Bid: € 700
Retired architect, chartered electrical engineer and once Enemalta Chairman,
Joe’s attraction for clay derives from a life of construction and design.
Joe draws on his past expertise in building houses and churches, cupolas and
factories, to give shape to his clay. Working with clay is in a way not very
different from working on the drawing board.
Under the capable tutorship of George Muscat, at the Malta College of Arts,
Science and Technology, he quickly mastered the properties of clay and the
mystique of glazing. Joe’s work is quite varied. Some of his earlier stuff could
be very humorous, with figures concocted out of clay and found material like
cogs, rusty metal and bolts.
Other work reflects his training in design as an architect, or his experimenting
with various techniques, while later work reflects more sculpted material, three
dimensional buildings, landscapes and streetscapes.

85. A Solitary Road
Adrienne Cassar
Oil on Canvas; 70cm x 80cm
Starting Bid: € 300
Adrienne Cassar (b.1954) is a bold expressionist cautiously and prudently
following in the steps of her father the late Carmelo Mangion (1905-97) and
like him she admires the French Impressionists and Expressionists.
The freshness, spontaneity and freedom of her brush strokes show a
decisiveness of thought and action. Perhaps her best work depicts a path that
leads into the picture space when suddenly it disappears into a valley.
This scene could be a landscape from her rooftop studio overlooking San
Gwann. It gives a sense of space, of freedom and well-earned solitude. Her
obsession with light entering arched streets and underground vaults reveals her
love for contrasts while her streetscapes dominated by our domed churches
point to vernacular leanings for hilltop villages, for open spaces and green open
countryside.
Adrienne is inspired by nature and the connivance of man.

Rene Sacco
Oil on Canvas Board; 70cm x 50 cm
Starting Bid: € 200
Born in Sliema, Rene Sacco, 71 received his education at the Govt. Primary
School Sliema, St. Joseph Secondary Technical School, Paola, MCAST,
Technical Institute Naxxar and The University of Malta. He is a Medical
Laboratory Technologist by profession and a certified Draughtsman.
Among his numerous hobbies and interests, art, in its various applications
has featured prominently throughout his lifetime. Until quite recently,
Rene' received sporadic formal tuition, relying mostly on books and
observation to further his capacities. Soon after his official retirement, he
first joined a course run by the Society of Arts, and later joined the
Goverment School of Art where he has completed the Diploma in Fine Arts
(Painting) course run by the School.
Among the major woks to his credit, are the designs for the postage stamp
set featuring 'Wayside Chapels, issued in 2004 and the altarpiece showing
the Annunciation'presently hanging in the Medieval Chapel at Hal-Millieri.
Rene is by no means limited to a particular medium or subject and although
he admits that 'comfort zones exist in both, he is in a continuous process of
learning, observation and experimental interpretation.
Rene Sacco participates regularly in local exhibitions often presenting
figurative material with strong impressionistic influences. His most recent
works though still retaining realistic qualities are moving steadily towards a
certain degree of abstraction.
