Holiday MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR FUN Christmas Reading by Local Author Roger Barr Let’s Decorate for the Holidays Start off your holiday season with our own Highland Village author Roger Barr, who will read from his collection of Christmas stories, Getting Ready for Christmas & Other Christmas Stories. Roger has authored seven non-fiction books including his novel, The Treasure Hunt, based on the St. Paul Winter Carnival and the Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt. He will present the “top 20” causes of falls, tips for fall prevention, how to avoid injury if you do fall, and how to make your home safer. Bring your questions. Get Your 2015 Flu Shot Get your flu shot at our annual neighborhood Flu Shot Clinic, jointly sponsored by the Merriam Park Living At Home Block Nurse Program and Keystone Community Services Senior Program. Every age is welcome. Bring your Medicare card and your health insurance card. Flu shots are otherwise $35. Tuesday, October 20, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. West 7th Community Center The Aging Well Expo is THE place to find resources and information on health and wellness. We will have a ton of health and wellness exhibitors, workshops and free chair massages. Screening galore! Cholesterol, BMI, Blood Pressure, Balance Screenings and Hearing Checks will be available during the entire event. Free Medicare, Legal, Veterans Benefits, Pharmaceutical Consultations and Caregiving consultations will also be available. If you still need to get your flu or pneumonia shots, Minnesota Visiting Nurses Agency will be here to offer those, just remember to bring your insurance and/or Medicare card! Flu vaccines will also be available (bring your insurance card!). FREE! Make a day of it and stay for lunch. You do not want to miss the fun, informative and free event! 3 FA L L E X E R C I S E C L A S S E S All classes are held at Merriam Park Community Center unless otherwise noted. Fit & Fabulous Ages 50 and over and all abilities are welcome to participate in these standing or sitting exercises. The focus of this class is not what you can’t do but what you CAN do! We are all different ages and our bodies work differently. Those differences are respected and celebrated. Modifications are made by the instructor to suit your own abilities. Classes will include: Stretching and warm up; work on endurance; cool down; guided relaxation and fun! Curious about these classes? Drop in and try it out – first class is free! Bring a friend too! Classes are offered at two locations: Merriam Park Community Center Mon/Wed/Fri 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. West 7th Community Center Mon/Wed/Fri 9:00 – 9:50 a.m. Cost for Fit & Fabulous classes is $10/month. For Silver & Fit members, cost is $25 per year. Registered participants can attend class at either Merriam Park Community Center or West 7th Community Center. Arthritis Exercise Licensed Arthritis Foundation exercise instructors will provide this low-impact joint safe exercise class, which has been documented to help pain and relieve stiffness while increased flexibility and range of motion. Session 1 – 8 weeks Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 15 through November 5 11 a.m. – noon. Session 2 – 5 weeks Thursdays, November 12 and 19, December 3, 10 and 17 11 a.m. – noon Call ASAP to register. Cost is $8 for the eight weeks or $1 per class. Qigong – For Everyone! Three lessons will help make Spring Forest Qigong part of your life! Bonnie Blanchett, a Spring Forest Qigong master healer, will instruct this three-session class which focuses on movements and meditations. Each day is a new beginning, an opportunity to learn ways we can live life more fully. Qigong has helped many people deal with physical and emotional challenges. Take one or all of the classes in this program. 3 weeks, Thursdays, beginning October 15 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Cost is $6 per class. Zumba Gold This beginners class is a fun exercise based on dancing to a variety of different musical styles. It is a great aerobic workout and tones your body. Licensed Zumba Gold instructor Dinah Keefe will lead these classes. Call to register and bring a friend! Fridays, September 11 – October 23 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. No cost but a donation is appreciated. Gentle Yoga Tara, our licensed yoga instructor, will lead this five-week Gentle Yoga class. This class is an ideal method for releasing stress, strengthening a sense of balance and increasing core body strength. In addition, this practice deepens flexibility and union of body and mind awareness. 5 weeks, Wednesdays, beginning October 21 Spring Forest Qigong for the Heart This class will help improve the health of your heart. You will do gentle Qigong exercise for the heart, a brief guided meditation and learn healing tips you can use for you heart. Matter of Balance This eight-week class offers a strong curriculum to improve balance. Keystone will be holding this class early winter of 2016. The fall class may have a couple of openings. Weekly dances at West 7th Community Center! You don’t need a partner, just your dancing shoes. Let the Golden Tones serenade you while you dance the afternoon away. Tai Chi Ch’uan Gym Walking Get your exercise indoors this fall and winter in the Merriam Park Community Center gym. Monday, Wednesday, Friday beginning September 2 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Stick Walking This gentle exercise system from China offers many health benefits. No equipment or experience required. Four-week session is offered at the West 7th Community Center. Thursdays, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Cost for four weeks is $40; class is pro-rated. FREE! Sixty years after fleeing Vienna, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren) an elderly Jewish woman, attempts to reclaim family possessions that were seized by the Nazis. Among them is a famous portrait of Maria’s beloved Aunt Adele. This is a must-see! Wednesday, November 18 – McFarland USA A true story. Track coach Jim White is a newcomer to a predominantly Latino high school in California’s Central Valley. Coach White and his new students realize their exceptional running ability. These teens with strong family ties, incredible work ethic and commitment all factor in to their championship team. Inspiring! Chat over coffee and help a St. Kate’s student! A class of college students at the University of St. Catherine needs your help for a class project. This group of about 25 college students is studying good communication skills. As part of their class, they would like to practice their conversational communication skills with you. What’s involved? First, enjoy coffee and cookies at two structured large-group meetings at Merriam Park Community Center — Friday, October 16, 11:05 – 11:55 a.m. or Friday, November 20, 11:05 – 11:55 a.m. FREE! Second, be available for one or two meetings with an individual student or small group of students, to be completed before Thanksgiving. You and your student(s) will be free to choose any subjects of mutual interest to discuss, such as hobbies now or in your earlier life, your experiences as a young person compared to theirs, your families, educational experiences or any other topics that spark interest. Your responsibility as a participant will be to attend the large-group meetings and be willing to meet with and have additional conversations with college-age students. Please note: you must be willing to share your contact information (either phone number or email address) so that the student may contact you to set up the meetings. Questions?
