Founding fashion label Uzurii fulfilled the ultimate dream of Shieglee
Ferreira dos Santos (1971), who was born in Brazil’s Amazon rain forest
and moved to the slums of Rio de Janeiro at the age of five. The young
Shieglee had three big wishes: to have a pair of shoes of her own, dance
like a real samba queen on one of the f loats in a carnival parade and
sleeping in Rio de Janeiro’s most beautiful hotel for one night.

At the age of 13 she moved to The Netherlands, sailed through high
school and graduated from fashion academies. Being able to absorb the
most valuable elements of both cultures, she grew to be the creative and
self-assured woman she is today. Thirty years on, all her wishes have
been fulfilled – she has stayed at the hotel where her mother was once a
chambermaid and danced as the breathtakingly glamorous Isis in Rio de
Janeiro’s Samba.

Never denying her roots Shieglee now inspires, encourages and helps

such as UNICEF to help the disadvantaged youth in their quests for
better lives.

The
ATELIER
A place where life experiences are
transformed into the essence of Uzurii
Shieglee finds inspiration for her design from real life. From her
visits to cultures around the world, in her never-ending quest to find
the best and most beautiful materials and even, as a mother, when
standing by a sports field cheering her young children. The designs
of Uzurii are the artistic reflection of the designer’s life, literally the
realisation of her dream. The place where all the inspiration reaches
its full potential and is converted into a creation is her atelier.
IDEAS BECOME DESIGNS
The head office of Uzurii in the Netherlands radiates an
atmosphere that can best be described as a second home. The
stylish showroom, the warmth in the offices and the colourful
atelier constitute the home base for the creativity you find
throughout the collection. The inspiring and stylish nature of the
atelier contributes to the ability to convert these life experiences
into practical concepts and designs.

Together with her dedicated professionals, Shieglee works daily to
expand the collection and to invent new and smarter techniques.
One of the unswerving factors and a major pillar upon which the

TECHNIQUE
HANDMADE SOPHISTICATION
For a large part of the new collection, designer Shieglee Ferreira dos Santos has developed a
completely new technique for attaching the ornaments. The technique is unique and guarantees
exceptional quality.
The technique is used for the Precious
Collection, the Amazon Collection and by
now also for the Fabulous Collection. What
is noticeable immediately is the difference in
design. Whereas in the rest of the collections,
the stones are usually inlaid, in these
collections the materials are intertwined with
the fastening. The result is that the designs are
distinct in f lexibility and application.
Upon arrival in the Netherlands, all the items are individually inspected for quality and design before
they are packed. The packaging for these three collections is also new. The gift boxes are bigger, they
have a special finish and contain an extra cushion on which your Uzurii is presented like a piece of
jewellery.
After all, all the designs from all the collections are handmade. Craftsmanship and quality have always
been the core values in the production of each collection from the very first Uzurii.
A specific type of steel thread is used, sewn
by hand to the V of the Uzurii. Because
the materials used have to be applied in a
specifically designed pattern, with every
new rotation the exact color and size of the
ornaments must be sought out and placed.
The designs in the three collections are
created mainly by a special combination
of unusual stones and beads, most of which
are especially developed by Uzurii. Due to
f lexible steel thread, each design is manually
finished and that makes each Uzurii in these
collections totally unique. It is a very labourintensive technique and the result is truly
overwhelming.
