It was great seeing many of
you at the field day in College
Station. I know I had a great time and hope
the rest of you did also. Reconnecting with
old friends and meeting new families is
always a highlight of my summer, and this
field day made number 11 for me. For those
of you who didn’t make it, we missed you
and look forward to seeing you soon.
I would like to share with you an excellent
opportunity I was selected for this summer.
I was given the chance to attend the Texas
Youth Cattle Conference sponsored by the
Texas Beef Council, and it was amazing. The
group included several county agents and 12
other teens from across Texas. We started off

in San Antonio with an interesting training
about how to “speak easy” about beef and
nutrition. We then traveled by charter bus
to Corpus Christi and had fun at the Corpus
Christi Hooks baseball game. In Corpus,
we toured Kane Beef, the only major beef
packing plant in South Texas that employees
nearly 1,000 employees and processes
over 1,000 head of cattle a day from Texas
ranches. After Kane Beef, we ventured to
the 825,000-acre historical King Ranch
established in 1853 and home of the first
American breed of beef cattle. We were given
a tour and history lesson of the fascinating
ranch and the transition it has made from
a frontier ranch to a modern corporation.
We then traveled to TAMU Kingsville and
were given a hands-on experience with
cattle—pregnancy testing, drawing blood
and soundness exams, along with a great
steak dinner. The last day we toured the
Whataburger and HEB headquarters. Both
of these companies pride themselves in
providing quality beef to the nation and I
got to see firsthand how all this works.
If any of you juniors are interested in
applying for next year’s Texas Youth Cattle
Conference, or simply learning more, please
ask me. I would love to share my story and
help you apply in the future. It was definitely
a great experience I won’t forget.
Next up for our breed is the National Junior
Limousin Show and Congress in Lexington,
Kentucky, July 8-14. Whether it’s your first
nationals, or 11th, like mine, I have a little
advice for you juniors: get involved! I have been
able to experience conferences like the TYCC,
because I got involved with the Limousin breed
and came out of my “quiet, shy, shell.”
There are many ways to get involved: get
those photos and magazine ads ready to turn
in, let Amber Parkinson know if you want
to participate on a cow camp team, jump in
and help with the judging contest, volunteer
to help decorate stalls and hang curtains,
sign up and participate in the Tenderfoot
Social, don’t be afraid to enter the public
speaking, and be prepared to participate in
the Beef Cook-off skit! Do not let the week
go by and wish you had done more. Trust
me, Texas has some of the best people you
will ever meet, so if you are new please jump
in and join us for a great week!
I look forward to seeing you in Kentucky,
and if I can be of any assistance, don’t hesitate
to contact me. I would love to answer your
questions and help you get involved.

A LETTER FROM THE
EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
Fellow Members and Friends,
Well summer has officially arrived and it is hot and what I
thought was the never ending rain and mud in our part of Texas
is gone. On the plus side, we do have ample pond water and
good grass! Summer also signals the start of state and national
junior shows. This issue has news from the recent Texas Junior
Limousin Field Day and heifer show. This event always reminds
me of the great families we have in our association. Many
pitched in to help with meals, and donated and bid on items
in the silent auction, which helps cover show expenses. Thanks
to Donna Stowers, Amber Parkinson, Dina Schur and Suzanne
Taylor for making the show and banquet a success. Also thank
you to the meal sponsors: the Wilder family, Schur family,
Lawrence family, Parkinson family, Stowers family, London
Ranch, Brooks Cattle Co., Brehm Farms, and Baber Ranch.
The junior program is very important to the TLA, therefore the
board of directors added another incentive for junior exhibitors to
choose Limousin with the TJLA Show Heifer of the Year award.
This award, coupled with the Lone Star Shoot-Out, makes owning
and showing Limousin a great choice.
The National Junior Limousin Show and Congress is July
8-14 and many of our juniors are making that trip to Lexington,
Kentucky. We wish everyone safe travels and we know they will
make us Texans proud.

The TLA Board of Directors held their summer meeting June 4 in Bryan.
Actions included finalizing the Junior Show Heifer of the Year program,
selecting the location for the 2017 annual member meeting and banquet,
and the location for the 2017 field day. The board decided to have the annual
member meeting and banquet on the grounds of the Fort Worth Stock Show,
and return to the Mallet Event Center in Levelland for the 2017 field day. A
spring sale for 2017 was discussed with Dr. Stowers offering his sale facility at
no cost to the association. April dates are being considered.
TLA AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS
AT TJLA BANQUET
The Texas Limousin Association presented two scholarships at the TJLA
Banquet held Saturday, June 4 at the Brazos County Expo Center in Bryan.
Grayson Harth of Idalou received the Gene Rogers E.J. Bishop Memorial
Scholarship, and Stephen Webb of Pinehurst received a scholarship
established last year in memory of individuals who contributed greatly to the
growth of the breed, including Floyd McGown, Payton Scott, Ray Cornelson,
and most recently, Dale Runnion. This scholarship was made possible by
donations from Brehm Farms, Baber Ranch, Henderson Cattle Co. and
Lawrence Family Limousin. If you would like to contribute to this scholarship
fund, please send your check to the TLA marked scholarship fund.
TJLA SILENT AUCTION GENERATES $3,045
A silent auction was held during the field day and heifer show to raise
money to support the show. Thanks to the bidders and donors, and to
Dina Schur for organizing the event.
WEST TEXAS FAIR
ADDED PREMIUMS TOTAL $2,500
The TLA board of directors voted to eliminate the open show at the
West Texas Fair & Rodeo in Abilene and add more premiums to the
junior female show to support the new Junior Show Heifer of the Year
program. Private donors contributed $1,300 in premiums to go with the
TLA’s $200 and West Texas Fair’s $1,000. The show is set for Sunday,
September 11 at 10 a.m.

FIELD DAY & HEIFER SHOW
SATURDAY RESULTS
The Texas Junior Limousin Association
members converged on the Brazos County
Expo Center in Bryan, June 4 and 5 for their
annual field day and heifer show. This year saw
34 Lim-Flex heifers, 23 Purebred heifers, four
pairs, three bulls and two steers exhibited by 40
TJLA members. Justin Yancey of San Angelo,
Texas, evaluated the 10 bred-and-owned
females, three bred-and-owned bulls, and four
divisions of showmanship Saturday, June 4.
Troy Holdman of Sundown, TX, owned the grand champion
bred-and-owned female. TRYH Bannana Split is a 7/22/14
daughter of XXX out of Zena.
Spencer Wilder of Snook, TX, exhibited the reserve grand
champion bred-and-owned female with SDWI Bout Time, an
11/20/14 daughter of DHVO Trey out of EF Ziggy.
Logan Chachere of Dayton, TX, led out the grand champion
bred-and-owned bull with LJCH Cashmere, a 10/2/15 son of
ROMN Xpect More out of EXAR Black Cap.
Lauren Stowers of Bridgeport, TX, exhibited the reserve
grand champion bull with LSTO Countdown, a 9/9/15 son of
EBFL Yipsilanti out of SBLX Xtra Special.
Winning the showmanship divisions were: Lauren Stowers,

Billy Ray “B.R.” Elliott,
79, of Franklin, Texas,

June 14, 2016, in
Temple, Texas.
He was born March
25, 1937, in Lott, Texas,
to J.W. “Dubb” Elliott and Christine Allen
Elliott. He was a 1955 graduate of Franklin
High School and attended TSTC. He married
Judith A. Leath September 3, 1960, in Calvert,
Texas. He was employed with G.A.T.X. for 29
years before his retirement in 1999. B.R. was
also a lifelong rancher and a member of the
First Baptist Church in Franklin.
Billy, known to many of his friends as B.R.,
was a man of few words, but his word was
his bond. He loved his family and cherished
the special times he spent with them. He
was a cattleman who enjoyed improving
his herd and selling show steers and heifers
to the youth of Franklin and throughout
the state. He especially enjoyed going to
cattle shows and watching young people
compete. Growing up in Franklin was a
wonderful time in his life, and he enjoyed
reminiscing about those days with his
friends. He developed a special bond with
his grandnieces and nephews. They made his
later years his happiest.
He is survived by his wife, Judith A. Elliott;
nieces, Gwen Hartsfield, Kathy DeGeorge,
Lisa Sifuentes, Laura Elliott and Stacy Bush;
nephews, Ken Elliott, John Elliott, Brad Elliott,
Steven McBeth and Craig Leath; and numerous
great-nieces and nephews.

Joe Donald Smith, 84,
of De Leon, Texas, went
home to his Lord and
Savior June 14, 2016,
with his family by his side.
He was born June 7,
1932, in Gorman, Texas, to John Richard
and Rosa Fisher Smith. Joe married his loving
wife of 61 years, Billie Anderson, January
29, 1955, in Comanche, Texas, at the First
Baptist Church.
Joe proudly served in the United States Army
during the Korean War Era as a Motor Pool
Sergeant. In his civilian life, Joe worked as an
auto mechanic and co-owned Smith Brothers
Automotive in Duncanville, Texas. He was a
longtime member of First Baptist Church of De
Leon and attended Couples II Sunday School
Class. Joe was raised in Beattie and graduated
from Comanche High School in 1949. He
enjoyed farming, being outdoors and travelling.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father,
brother, friend and neighbor. He will be missed
by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Billie; son, Johnny
and wife, Alysa; grandchildren, Shelby Baugh
and husband, Matt, Jordan Smith and wife,
Hannah, and Katelyn Sloan and husband,
Nathan; great-grandchildren, Brock Baugh,
Marshal Baugh, Mattie Baugh and Jace Smith;
brother, Larry Smith and wife, Sallie; nephew,
Alan Smith; and other extended family. Joe
was preceded in death by his parents, John and
Rosa Smith.

Dale Runnion
Dale Franklin Runnion, 98, publisher emeritus of
Limousin World and noted breed promoter, died June
11, 2016, in Longmont, Colorado. His death was
announced by June Runnion, his wife of 48 years and
partner in his publishing and business ventures.
Dale was born August 23, 1917, on a 160-acre
livestock and grain farm in Van Wert County, Ohio. He was the second
child of Lester and Velma (Cooper) Runnion. While growing up, he was
active in 4-H, showing steers at the county fair and judging livestock. In
1934 he and two Van Wert friends won the state judging competition
and represented Ohio at the 4-H Congress at the International Livestock
Exposition in Chicago. He attended the Ohio State University majoring in
animal husbandry and meat science and was a member of livestock judging
teams for three years. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1939, and
worked as a cattle buyer before being drafted into the Army two years later.
He served most of World War II as a Captain in a training battalion of the
Medical Administration Corps in Abilene, Texas. In 1945 the battalion was
deployed, and Captain Runnion saw duty in the Pacific as the adjutant of
the hospital on Iwo Jima. He was honorably discharged as a Major in 1946.
Runnion started his career in livestock journalism in 1949 as field
representative for the Chicago Drovers Journal. In 1952 he moved to
the Aberdeen Angus Journal where he rose from fieldman to advertising
manager to managing editor. At the Angus Journal he recruited and trained
a dynamic field force and instituted the Sire of the Year Award. In 1962
Angus registrations exceeded those of the Hereford breed, previously the
most numerous.
His career took a different turn in 1968 when he accepted a position
as marketing manager with Ankony Angus from Lee Leachman, a close
friend since college. Ankony, based in Rhinebeck, New York, was at that
time a dominant force in registered Angus cattle business.
In 1971 Runnion returned to publishing in Fort Collins, Colorado,
founding the International Limousin Journal, a magazine devoted to the
French breed of cattle. Runnion’s editorial and marketing efforts were
instrumental in promoting the growth of the Limousin breed in the
U.S. throughout the 1970s. He sold the International Limousin Journal
in 1979. Eighteen months later he was approached by the American
Angus Association about a consulting assignment to manage the Angus
Journal, which represented the nation’s largest beef cattle breed. Dale
worked in St. Joseph, Missouri, for the next two years to improve the
magazine’s performance. In the interim, the International Limousin
Journal had faltered, and in 1983 Dale and Dan Wedman founded the
Limousin World, which quickly became the official publication of the
breed foundation. He remained publisher emeritus of the magazine
until his death. Dale also served as Executive Vice President of the North
American Limousin Foundation, and he edited and published the History
of Limousin in North America.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Runnion’s portrait was hung in
a collection of the Saddle and Sirloin Club in 1988. That collection is
the world’s largest assemblage of quality individual portraits devoted to
a single industry and resides at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center
in Louisville. He was President of the Livestock Publications Council,
and France awarded him the Chevalier de l’Ordre du Merite Agricole.
He was also inducted into the halls of fame of the North American
Limousin Foundation, the American Angus Association and the Ohio
State University Animal Science Department.
He championed current news in breed publications and introduced
innovations to improve publication efficiency, but was perhaps best
known for the people he recruited, trained and inspired. He had the
ability to recognize, cultivate and motivate talented individuals. Coming
out of the Depression era, he was especially proud of giving young
people a job opportunity and helping them toward a productive career.
In his career he managed to combine traditional values learned on the
family farm, the most current industry developments and the modern
media sciences of advertising and marketing to promote the growth of
the registered Angus and Limousin cattle breeds. Fondly referred to as
“Communicator Extraordinaire” by longtime friend C.K. “Sonny” Booth
and a “Chief Motivator and Educator” by business partner Dan Wedman,
Dale received accolades from cattle people both nationally and worldwide.
He married Ada Kline in 1940. They were divorced in 1967, and he
married June Erickson in 1968. In addition to June, he is survived by his
four children: Jim in Chicago; Joy Pruitt in Naples, Florida; daughter Lee
in Lakewood, Colorado; and John in Birmingham, Alabama; as well as
stepchildren Steven Erickson of Longmont and Karen Erickson of Fort
Collins, Colorado; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Bill Tackett
William A. “Bill” Tackett, 76, passed away April
5, 2016, at his home in Kaufman, Texas. Bill was
born May 23, 1939, to William A. Tackett Sr. and
Virginia Maude Spencer Tackett.
Bill and his family were longtime members of the
Texas Limousin Association. As an avid rancher Bill
loved spending time with his cattle and traveling to countless cattle shows
and sales throughout Texas.
Bill graduated from Kaufman High School in 1958 and entered
the United States Navy in 1960 where he was honorably discharged
in 1963. Bill married Linda May Harper July 3, 1965, at the First
Methodist Church in Kemp, Texas. Bill worked for Kaufman County
Electric as a lineman and safety coordinator until his retirement in
1998, after 35 years of service. Following his retirement he worked
for J&L Utility Company in Edgewood, Texas, for an additional
13 years.

Bill was active in the community where he was a lifetime member
of VFW Post 3905, he coached for many years in the Kaufman Youth
baseball and football leagues, and also served on the Kaufman County
Junior Livestock board where he spent countless hours volunteering his
time for the youth and livestock community.
Bill is survived by his wife of 50+ years, Linda, and their four children:
Ron and wife, Debbie, of Blackwell, Texas; Wayne and wife, Shelley, of
Kemp, Texas; Emily (Tackett) Reynolds and husband, Jeff, of Kaufman,
Texas; Aaron and wife, Heather, of Iola, Texas; grandchildren Myles, Jon,
Hannah, Reese, Brooke, Eli, Wyatt, Emma and Katie; a sister, Lillian
Brock of Arlington; and two sister-in-laws, Norma Tackett of Terrell,
Texas, and Nelda Harper Wagoner of Omaha, Nebraska.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the
FBC Beth James Children’s Building through the First Baptist Church
of Kaufman or Dell Children’s Medical Center for cancer and blood
disorders through www.supportdellchildrens.org.
