A Mother’s Love
There are times when only a Mother’s love
Can understand our tears,
Can soothe our disappointments
And calm all of our fears.
There are times when only a Mother’s love
Can share the joy we feel
When something we’ve dreamed about
Quite suddenly is real.
There are times when only a Mother’s faith
Can help us on life’s way
And inspire in us the confidence
We need from day to day.
For a Mother’s heart and a Mother’s faith
And a Mother’s steadfast love
Were fashioned by the Angels
And sent from God above.

Indiana Dunes History 101-Fascinating, Fun and Free
by Rick A. Richards
As the price of gasoline inches toward $3 a gallon,
it’s a good bet that more people are going to stay
closer to home this year at vacation time. Instead
of two weeks to the Grand Canyon, families are expected to fit in more day or weekend trips.
The obvious destination in this region is Indiana
Dunes National Lakeshore, the most frequently visited destination in the state last year. More than 1.9
million people visited the dunes, according to the
National Park Service.
Not far behind was Indiana Dunes State Park,
which had 1.1 million visitors, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
But if you don’t like crowds and still want to learn
about the dunes, the Great Lakes and their ecology,
there’s a small exhibit room at the DNR headquarters in Michigan City that’s worth a visit.
This is a portion of the Exhibit Room at the Michigan City DNR office
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources opened its
District 10 office in Michigan City in 1988
It’s a place the entire family can enjoy, and best
of all, it’s free.
There aren’t any guided tours, says Brian Breidert, a fisheries biologist for the Lake Michigan
Fisheries Research Station with the Division of
Fish and Wildlife for the DNR. Breidert has been
deeply involved in organizing the exhibit room so
that visitors can take self-guided tours by following
the information that accompanies each item in the
exhibit.
When the Region 10 DNR headquarters was built
and opened in 1988, it included a public exhibit
room, but at the time, said Breidert, there wasn’t
much to see.
“There was a push in 1988, 1989, 1990 to get fish
species here as well as other species,” said Breidert.
And over the years, that effort has paid off.
Today, there are dozens of fish, bird and mammal specimens in the room, along with displays of
stream and aquatic life, information on Lake Michigan, commercial fishing and hunting.
Most of the fish on display were legally caught
and donated to the exhibit room. Many of the birds
and mammals, however, were hunted or trapped illegally and confiscated by DNR law enforcement officers from poachers.
“Many of them are protected and endangered species,” said Breidert, pointing to a great horned owl,
snowy owl, screech owl and sand hill crane. “There
also is a display box of songbirds, all of which are
protected species.”
Among the mammals, there are badgers and otters, said Breidert.
He pointed out that nearly all of the specimens
on display are common Indiana species. While most
Hoosiers probably haven’t seen a badger in the wild,
for instance, he said they are native to Indiana. Badgers are mostly solitary animals that prefer to be

out at night, so daytime hikers most likely wouldn’t
come across one.
Dominating the exhibit room is a display constructed by the Northwest Indiana Steelheaders
which provides a cutaway view of a stream that
shows the variety of native fish that are common in
areas streams and rivers, as well as a small sample
of life along the banks above the water.
“We get people here daily,” said Breidert. “We
have small groups come through, from grandparents to kids. We’ve had the Michigan City Sanitary
District visit and we have school groups, from fourth
to 12th grade. Our focus is on the environment that
is in our own backyard.”

Brian Briedert, a fisheries biologist with the Lake Michigan Fisheries
Research Station in Michigan City, talks about the various specimens
and other items on display in the DNR’s Exhibit Room.

a slice of aquatic
life they normally
can’t see.
Breidert especially likes to talk to groups and explain how the various fish species fit into the ecology of Lake Michigan.
The centerpiece of both the dunes and the DNR’s
exhibit room is Lake Michigan, which is easily visible through the windows in the exhibit room. Lake
Michigan is the third largest of the five Great Lakes
and the sixth largest lake in the world. It’s the only
Great Lake entirely within the boundaries of the
United States.
As he motions to the displays mounted on the wall
behind him, Breidert talks about how the ecology
of Lake Michigan has evolved since the late 1980s
with the influx of exotic species like alewives and
zebra mussels, to today where those species have
mostly been contained and sport fish like salmon
and trout are thriving.
A century ago, said Breidert, lake trout and other game fish thrived in Lake Michigan. But in the
1940s and 1950s, commercial fishing devastated the
game fish population. As early as the 1830s, exotic
species like sea lamprey from the Atlantic Ocean
were found in Lake Ontario, and by 1936, were
found in Lake Michigan. Because it has no natural
predators it began devastating game fish by eating
the food that supported game fish.

Nearly all of the species of sport fish in Michigan City
are on display in the DNR Exhibit Room.
Breidert’s job is to document the various species
in the lake. “We provide information on our sampling techniques and what we do here. It’s all a part
of the process we use to talk about the ecosystem.
We talk about native fish species and invasive species like the sea lamprey, zebra mussels and alewives.”
Breidert said trout were introduced to Lake
Michigan in 1965 as a way to control the sea lamprey and other invasive species. In 1966 and 1967,
the DNR began stocking Coho and Chinook salmon,
along with brown and steelhead trout.
Trout and salmon are regularly stocked in Lake
Michigan from Whiting to Michigan City and in
tributaries like Trail Creek, the St. Joseph River
and the East Branch of the Little Calumet River.
This specimen of an endangered pileated
woodpecker is one of many endangered bird
species on display at the DNR Exhibit Room in
Michigan City.
Breidert said stocking will have to continue into the
foreseeable future because the tributaries that feed
Lake Michigan – and where they spawn – are too
degraded for the sport fish to thrive naturally like
they should.
The attraction of people to Lake Michigan goes
back to Michigan City’s birth. “People like to have
water in their backyard,” said Breidert, “even if it’s
a pond or a creek. What we try to do is get kids to
understand the importance of taking care of the water.”
The DNR office in Michigan City contains much
more than an exhibit room the public can visit. It’s
the regional headquarters for DNR law enforcement
for the Northwest corner of the state, it’s a fisheries
office and it’s a water quality monitoring office.
But the exhibit room, said Breidert, “is a place to
come to in order to view the entire ecosystem. There
are signs and literature around the room that explains the various species, and if anyone has a specific question they can go to the desk and ask, and
someone on the staff can answer it for you.”
Primarily, though, the entire building is designed
to educate visitors.
“We hope that when people visit, it gets them
energized about doing something for the environment,” said Breidert.
“Part of what I do here, and I hope part of my legacy is my ability to share information and be willing
to work with multiple interests.” And one of those
interests is the public, which has an opportunity to
see a unique display on Lake Michigan ecosystem
merely by walking in the door.
This sandhill crane specimen was taken illegally
and confiscated by DNR conservation officers
This cabinet full of songbird specimens was
turned over to the DNR when the owner,
who had inherited from a deceased family
member, learned it was illegal to possess such
specimens. The samples include everything
from a cardinal to an oriole.

SMSO Final Concert of the Season
The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra’s
2009/2010 Season Wraps Up with the Margaret
Beckley Upton Memorial Concert Featuring Saxophonist Ashu; Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra
The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra’s
An American Celebration 2009/2010 Season wraps
up with the Margaret Beckley Upton Memorial
Concert in honor of Margaret Beckley who was a
devoted patron of the performing arts in the local
community. The concert, titled American Virtuosity,
features saxophonist Ashu and the Lake Michigan
Youth Orchestra (LMYO) on Sat., May 8, at 7:30
p.m.MI time at the Lake Michigan College Mendel
Mainstage, Napier Ave., Benton Harbor, MI.
Born and raised in California, Ashu began playing the saxophone at age 10. While most people
have never heard the saxophone in concert music,
Ashu has begun to change this. He says, “It’s really an incredible instrument. It can play with such
emotional intensity, sing like a voice, and effortlessly project in the largest of halls. It’s capable of a lot
of really beautiful things.”
Ashu has been hailed as “a remarkable saxophone virtuoso” for his stunning performances and
unique versatility.
Also included in the program is Copland’s “Buckaroo Holiday/Hoe-Down” from Rodeo, featuring
LMYO with the Symphony; Piazzolla’s Tangos;
Warlock’s Capriol Suite: movements 1&2; and
Schubert’s Symphony No. 9, The Great.
Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra (LMYO)
The Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra and SMSO
Side by Side Concerts began 25 years ago as a way
to give student musicians in LMYO an opportunity to perform a major professional work of music
alongside the professional musicians in SMSO. It
was modeled after other successful endeavors of
this type to help motivate and educate younger musicians toward higher level musical goals, but also
to provide insight into the world of professional musicians. Over the past 25 years, LMYO have performed major symphonies, works for very large orchestra, original music written for the occasion, and
special commissioned works with the SMSO. LMYO
is currently under the direction of Steve Reed, Director of Orchestra at St. Joseph High School and
2nd trumpet in SMSO.
This year the Side by Side Concert will feature
the combined groups performing both the Buckaroo
Holiday and Hoedown from Aaron Copland’s “Rodeo”, an energetic and brilliant American composition from the standard orchestral repertoire.
Tickets are $35 for adults, $30/seniors, and $7/students.

Citizenship: What Everybody Needs to
Know
We all know what a citizen is—anybody born in
the U.S. But what does it mean to be a good citizen?
I think being a good citizen means to support your
community.
For instance, if there is someone poor, give that
person some money or food so they can be happy. Or
give your community a donation so you can make
the community stronger. If you have a free day, you
can pick up trash on the side of the road or paint
homes that need to be re-painted. This shows a
sense of pride in your community.

Can mental illness be a gift? Local theater production says “yes!”
So, what IS normal anyway? Five women ask
the question in two performances, Sat., May 15
and May 22. “Everything I Ever Wanted to Know, I
Learned Being Mentally Ill ... and everyone is ... at
least a little,” debuts at Sinai Temple Auditorium,
2800 Franklin St., Michigan City. Curtain time is
7:30 p.m. The play celebrates the human experience
through stories and music. Meaningful, tender, respectful and humorous, the original work has broad
appeal.
“Everything I Ever Wanted to Know...” is the
brainchild of area “edutainer,” Idene Goldman. Her
organization, Inner Education, LLC, offers seminars on self-awareness and diversity, enhancing
personal and professional cooperation. “We emphasize strengths and talents, without getting lost in
what’s wrong and what needs fixing! The show is a
natural extension of this, and the cast shares some
of their own mental health challenges, laced with
humor.
The creative collaboration is accomplished
through the reflections of five women: Gloria Cotton, Diane Loffmin, Sue Quiriconi, Suzy Vance, and
Goldman. The ensemble – teachers, counselors, HR
consultants, writers, actors, singers, artists, and
more – brings insight and a lighter feeling to emotional trials.
“The production illustrates the shifting nature of
our minds. How can something so prevalent be labeled ‘abnormal’? We might do well to consider the
abnormal as normal! What’s normal anyway?” says
participant, Suzy Vance, laughing.
“The show is not just another tale of triumph
over adversity. The triumph is over our negative
attitudes toward mental illness. We hope to courageously address this delicate issue so audiences will
walk away entertained and uplifted,” says Goldman. “And we’re simply a lot of fun.”

A Sublime Symphonic Sojourn in Two Movements with Mom
by Charles McKelvy
Call this the Hannah McKelvy Symphony in B
Sharp.
Or more precisely, Be Well, Get Well, and Stay
Well!
Hannah McKelvy, of course, is my dear mother,
and you have certainly seen her smiling face grace
these pages many times over the years, particularly
in 2007 when the two of us toddled off to Russia together to see where the Volga might lead us.
Anyway, Mom has had her medical adventures
of late, and they were, in a strangely harmonious
way, tied to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s
2009/2010 season to which we subscribe.
So I present the Hannah McKelvy Symphony in
two movements, beginning with the Orchestra’s
Lenten concert:
I. Larghetto
(Symphony Center, March) . . .Achtung, all you
good German students. Please translate this sentence: “Ruht wohl, ihr heiligen Gebeine.”
Time’s up.
According to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra
(CSO), it means: “Rest well, beloved, sweetly sleeping.”
I know because my wife Natalie and I were privileged to hear the Chicago Symphony Chorus sing
those words on a Friday in Lent as part of the CSO’s
performance of J.S. Bach’s Saint John Passion.
Music truly restores the soul, and there is no better balm for a hurting heart than that which was
composed by the amazing Johann Sebastian Bach.
Herr Bach, you should know, composed the Saint
John Passion in 1724 and led the first performance
on Good Friday, April 7, of that year, in Saint Nicholas Church in Leipzig.
Would that we could have been there for the premiere, but we were certainly all ears for that amazing matinee performance on Michigan Avenue. Bach
called for a four-part chorus, vocal soloists for arias
and dramatic roles, and an instrumental ensemble
ranging from flutes and oboes to viola da gamba and
harpsichord.
And there we were to hear them recount the passion story from John’s Gospel in lyrical German.
Natalie, I should note at this point, was a fill-in for
my mother, Hannah McKelvy.
My mother and I are season ticket holders, and
we had every good intention of taking our tickets to
Orchestra Hall on Friday, March 12 for a good bit of
Bach. What better way, we thought, in which to observe Lent than to hear Bach’s Saint John Passion?
Well, as Scotland’s immortal Robert Burns wrote:
“the best laid plans o’ mice and men gang aft agley.”
Meaning that on the Wednesday before our Symphony date, my mother was unable to breathe and
had to be rushed from her assisted living apartment in Chicago to a nearby hospital in Blue Island. When my brother-in-law Stu called with the
dire news, the first thing I thought was: We’re not
going to be able to go to the Symphony to hear the
Bach Passion.
And for the first 24 hours, it looked like everyone
was on hold. But then Mom, being the hearty Scot
that she is, fought back, and my sister and brotherin-law said: “You and Natalie go to the Symphony
on Friday and enjoy it.”
And so we did.
And so when Christ had died and the chorus began that wondrous, comforting lullaby, “Ruht wohl,
ihr heilegen Gebeine” (rest well, beloved, sweetly
sleeping), I just lost it.
We were sitting in the second row, and the poor
soprano couldn’t help but notice some big guy blubbering right below her feet.
But when I was able to look up, she gave me the
most comforting look I had received since my mother brought me into this world.
Music truly comforted my soul that Friday in
Lent, and, thanks to all your prayers and calls, my
indomitable Scottish-American mother will be good
to go to our next Symphony date in April.
II. Allegro vivace
(Symphony Center, April) . . . Having risen from
her hospital bed and happily returned to the Church
of the Holy Nativity in Chicago for their festive Easter service, my dear mother declared herself ready,
willing, and quite eager to attend the CSO’s program for April 9, featuring the great Emanuel Ax
performing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor.
Mom’s back on
the Ave, as in
Michigan Ave!
That’s Orchestra
Hall behind her.

Hannah “Lazara” McKelvy (seated, middle) with most of her family on
Easter Sunday. Son Donald and the “Florida clan” were
in Florida enjoying a really sunny Easter.
You’ll find Hannah McKelvy and yours truly
dining here in style on “symphony day.”
Her rector, the Reverend James W. Nako, had
dubbed her “Lazara” on Easter Sunday, and my
risen-from-the-hospital-bed mother was certainly
ready to show those ladies we sit with down near
the orchestra just what a miracle she was and continues to be.
The Reverend
James W. Nako
dubbed my
mother, Hannah
McKelvy,
“Lazara”
on Easter
Sunday for
her miraculous
recovery and
return to life.
So I duly collected her at Smith Village in Chicago
on our appointed April symphony day, and I immediately complimented her on the beautiful coiffure
she had just received for the occasion.
And then I loaded Mom and wheelchair in our
Honda Civic and off we went a flyin’ on the (Dan)
Ryan (Expressway) to our date with divine music.
But first we took a delightful tour of the Art Institute with Mom’s erudite granddaughter and my
knowledgeable niece, one Annie Wright. Annie had
the week off from teaching school, and so she was
ours for the middle of that delightful day.
We dined in style at Rhapsody which is at the Adams and Wabash corner of Symphony Center, and
then Annie escorted us to the very portal of the best
symphonic music in the world and went back to the
Art Institute for longer look at the moderns whilst
Hannah McKelvy and her granddaughter Annie Wright await suitable
sustenance at Rhapsody restaurant after a tour of the Art Institute.
Mother Dear and I feasted our ears on the aforementioned Chopin Piano Concerto No. 2 with Berlioz’s Overture to Benvenuto Cellini, Mendelssohn’s
Symphony No. 5 in D Major, and Wagner’s Overture
to Rienzi thrown in for some memorable measures.
Emanuel Ax was more than splendid on the
Steinway put before us, and Mom did her best to
join the standing ovation that followed his performance, and his encore.
But she was there
in mind, body and
spirit, and Emanuel
Ax and the rest of the
players played their
hearts out for her. As
they certainly may
in May when we return to finish out the
season before ordering our tickets for the
2010/2011 season.
Alleliua!!
Emanuel Ax was a fitting bill
of fare for Hannah McKelvy’s
triumphant return to
Orchestra Hall.

The spring/summer issue of Valparaiso University’s online poetry journal features American poet
Brian Turner, winner of the 2005 Beatrice Hawley
Award, and an exploration of his experiences writing poems while on active duty as a soldier during
the recent Iraq war.
The new issue of Valparaiso Poetry Review (http://
www.valpo.edu/vpr/) features Turner’s poems “Helping Her Breathe,” “Al-A’imma Bridge” and “In the
Guggenheim Museum,” as well as an interview with
the poet conducted by Dr. Edward Byrne, editor of
the online journal and professor of English, about
Turner’s perspectives pertaining to war and its effects on him, other soldiers and civilians.
“When I look back at myself as a soldier writing
poetry in Iraq, I see a writer who is beginning to
learn how to write as a witness,” said Turner. “In
previous manuscripts I’d written, I mostly imposed
my style, my music, onto the subject at hand. In
Iraq, though I wasn’t consciously aware of it at the
time, I was learning how to listen more to the poem
rising from within the moment.”
In addition to Turner, other poets featured in the
new issue include Kathryn Stripling Byer’s “Beachwalkers,” Nathaniel Bellows’ “Mercy” and Thomas
Reiter’s “Forcing the Forsythia.”
The Valparaiso Poetry Review has been named
one of the nation’s leading journals of poetry and
literary criticism. Previous issues of the VPR have
included the work of a number of the nation’s most
famous poets, including writers who have won the
Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award and National
Book Critics’ Circle Award.
The Valparaiso Poetry Review has been recognized in the National Books Critics Circle, Writer’s
Digest, the Library of Congress, the Poetry Foundation, the Academy of American Poets, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Key West Literary Seminar
website.
More than 8,000 works from writers in more than
40 countries were submitted for publication in the
journal during 2009. Read the Valparaiso Poetry
Review online at http://www.valpo.edu/vpr/

gourmet foods and herbs are just a few of the products that will be available when the Michigan City
Mainstreet Association’s Farmers Market began its
18th year of operation on May 1st. Located at the
corner of Eighth and Washington streets in Michigan City’s Historic Downtown, the market opens at
8:00 a.m. each Saturday through October and continues until noon or until the vendors sell out.
Market Manager Ruth Deutscher indicates that
many favorite market vendors are returning to the
market this year and local not-for-profit groups will
conduct weekly bake sales. Among the vendors returning are Burek Farms, Cyrano’s Bistro, Vicini
Farms and Greenhouse, Clearspring Acres, Garwood Orchards, D’Avella Family Winery, Billy Boy’s
Blueberry Barn, Mulson Farm, McCartney’s Farm,
Hercik Farms, Grandpa’s Farm (pastured chickens
and eggs), Natural Wonders Organic Gardens, Cigar Heads Biz, Hostas and More, The Plant Ladies
and Sahara Restaurant
A limited number of spaces are still available to
vendors on either a season or weekly basis. Interested vendors can contact Ruth at 219-879-5807.
Area residents will find knowledgeable vendors
who are able to answer their questions about the
products such as how they are grown and how
to prepare them. Also, the market has become a
“gathering place” to meet friends and enjoy other
activities throughout the season.
Mainstreet Association liaison to the Farmers
Market Jerry Peters hopes to have a variety of entertainment and activities throughout the summer.
Those interested in participating may contact him

Women and Diabetes
Approximately 9.1 million or 8.9% of all women in the U.S. have diabetes,
however, about a third of them do not know it. Because of the increasing lifespan of
women and the rapid growth of minority populations, the number of women in the
U.S. at high risk for diabetes and its complications is increasing.

“The Producers” Auditions-May 8
“The Producers, A Mel Brooks Musical” presented
by the Dunes Summer Theatre this summer opens
on June 25 for three weekends. This promises to be
a great big, fun musical. Bob Cooley, director of “The
Producers” says, “My vision for “The Producers” –
Charisma, Energy, Audacity, Talent. A loud show
and a louder house. That’s what we will be trying to
accomplish. I hope you’ll consider joining us!”
Final auditions for the show are Sat., May 8, 1-4
p.m. at the Dunes Summer Theatre located at 288
Shady Oak Drive in Michiana Shores, just off Old
Grand Beach Road.
Come out and meet old and new friends as the
Dunes begins its summer season. Be prepared to
sing 16 bars of a song of your choice or just sing
“Happy Birthday” if you have nothing prepared.
Also wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to
learn a simple dance routine. Bob Cooley is joined
by veteran musical director Jim Mollin and a talented new choreographer, Dwayne Johnson.
This is the third open audition for “The Producers”. While it is mostly cast, the roles of Franz and
Roger remain open, as well as open enrollment for
chorus (meaning, if you want to be in, you’re in),
and this is a big chorus with some great numbers
such as “Springtime for Hitler and Germany.” If you
are interested in any of these roles please contact
Bob Cooley at [email protected] and of course,
come out and audition on May 8. Rehearsals begin
on May 10, 7 p.m., at the Dunes. Any further questions, phone producer Dani Lane at 269.449.8686 or

Most Recent Supper Club
We supper clubbers were enjoying our feast at Pat
Latchford’s table when I suddenly realized I’d actually known someone Patti Marth was mentioning
just then – her boss for many years, Jay Blackburn.
Several years ago, Blackburn and I were at Michigan City’s train depot waiting for each of our incoming passengers – that train was quite late. That’s
when we began chatting; I mentioned Michigan
City’s Beacher and that I wrote the “foodstuff” story.
He was delighted, said he’d always kept my recipes
in his busy kitchen. He’s a food man, too. He is now
in several weeks of a Beacher ad, all about his specializing in “Veneers, teeth whitening, crowns and
bridgework. Excellence in family dentistry. Call
today for a free consultation.” Yes, we had a great
conversation while waiting for that slow slow train.
Now, back to our supper club that evening. Our
two pleasant guests were neighbors in our own
lawns – Shirley White and Kathy Dolezal. They
brought fine food as you’ll see their recipes below.
Yes, the food was grand; the guests were also grand
and we four supper clubbers are the happiest of all.
Enjoy our recipes below.
Donna’s pretty appetizer – everyone enjoyed it.
SPINACH – CHEESE SWIRLS
1/2 pkg. puff pastry (1 sheet)
1 egg
1 T. water
1/2 c. shredded Muenster or Monterey Jack
cheese
1/4 c. grated Parmesan cheese
1 green onion, shopped
1/8 tsp. garlic powder
1 pkg. frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well
drained
salt
Thaw pastry sheet at room temp. until easy
to handle. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly
grease large baking sheet. Stir egg and water
in small bowl. Stir cheeses, onion and garlic
powder in medium bowl. Unfold pastry sheet on
lightly floured surface. Brush with egg mixture.
Top with cheese mixture and spinach. Lightly
salt spinach. Starting at short side closest to
you, roll up like a jelly roll. Cut into 1/3” slices.
Place on baking sheet. Brush with egg mixture.
Bake 15 – 20 minutes until golden. Serve warm
or at room temp.

Renewable Energy Workshop & Expo
African Tribal Art Exhibit at VU
Renewable Energy & Sustainable Living
Workshop and Expo
Sat., May 8, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. MI time
Held at the New Troy Community Center, 13372
California Rd., New Troy, MI.
This day is a joint presentation of REgroup and
the Friends of New Troy. The keynote address will
be “Economic Analysis of RE Systems” by John
Richter, co-founder Institute for Sustainable Energy Education and former president Great Lakes
Renewable Energy Association.
There will also be vendors, installers, site assessors, featuring geothermal, solar, wind and other
possibilities. Affordable products and technology for
the home and business will be explored. More information at www.regroupmi.org or 269/426-4199.
Valparaiso University’s Brauer Museum of Art
will host an exhibition featuring more than 300
pieces of historically significant African tribal art
from May 14 to August 8.
The exhibition, “The Art and Magic of Africa: Selections from the Lawrence P. Kolton Collection,”
includes pieces from the late 19th and early 20th
centuries including masks, carved figures, pottery,
weapons, metalwork, furniture and other items.
These works come from the extensive collection of
Lawrence P. Kolton, a Porter County resident who
collects and deals tribal and ethnographic works
from Africa, New Guinea and China. Kolton has
sold and provided pieces to major collectors and
public institutions nationally and internationally.
Hertzlieb says many 20th century modern artists
in Europe and North America were inspired by the
creations of various African tribes and considered
them to be as formally satisfying as sculpture from
any period.
“Artists such as Picasso and Matisse strove in
many of their works to emulate qualities of tribal
art,” says Hertzlieb, director/curator of the Brauer
Museum of Art. “It is the Brauer Museum’s hope
that viewers can see the displayed objects as being
culturally significant and full of magic, but at the
same time interesting as products of the human
hand that reflect advanced concerns of shape, form,
color, texture and related aesthetic elements.”
The Brauer Museum displayed a sampling of New
Guinea artifacts from Kolton’s collection in 2005,
in an exhibition titled “Art and the Spirit World of
New Guinea.”
A free brochure accompanies the exhibition and
includes an essay by Dr. Arthur P. Bourgeois, art
historian at Governors State (Ill.) University. Bourgeois’ essay serves as an introduction to the comprehension and understanding of African art and its
diversity and rewards.
The opening reception for the exhibition will
include a brief talk by Kolton and will take place
on Friday, May 14, at 7 p.m. On July 21 at 7 p.m.,
Hertzlieb will present a Gallery Talk on the Africa
exhibition. Both events are free and open to the
public.
The exhibition was made possible through funds
provided by the Brauer Museum of Art’s Robert and
Caroline Collings Endowment and the Partners for
the Brauer Museum of Art.
More information about the Brauer Museum of
Art is available at www.valpo.edu/artmuseum. The
Museumis open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tues., Thurs. and
Fri.; 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wed.; and noon to 5 p.m.
Sat. and Sun. during the academic year. Summer
hours from May 18 to Aug. 22 are Tues.-Sun., noon
to 5 p.m., closed Mondays. Admission to the museum and all events is free.

It’s not Chutes and Ladders or Monopoly, but Notre

“Math on the Go” is a new program created by Mrs.

Mrs. Delehanty was trying to think of a way to
“put muscle in their math facts.” She constructed
30 games for each class, grades 1 – 5. The materials were purchased with a grant from the Michigan
City Education Foundation. Some activities involve
matching addition facts with Leaping Lily Pads,
playing Hopscotch Multiplication, Get to the Top
with equivalent fractions, or even Full Speed Ahead
for elapsed time.

Parents have been thrilled. “This is much better
than flash cards,” says parent Mary Jo Kelley. Her
son Jack especially enjoys the board games.
“It’s fun seeing the interaction with siblings,”
added Tom Kelley. His daughter Claire, an aspiring
teacher, takes the math practice one step further by
pulling off math sheets from the computer for her
younger sister Mary Pat.
While the games were aimed at students in the
primary and intermediate grades, parents have
commented on the fun the entire family has had.
“From our first grader Peter who has declared them
the most awesome homework ever to his preschool
brother who has amazed us with math skills we
didn’t know he had to Dad who says wait until he
gets home because he wants in on this, too,” parent
Marie Campbell adds that it also has been good for
sportsmanship.
Mrs. Stephanie Ruszkowski was helping her son
with the rounding game. “I could see it being on the
ISTEP test. It was good to sit down and talk about
it ahead of time.”
Her boys Jack and Ben have a great time challenging each other and want to play the games as
soon as they get home, but she has to caution them
to do their homework first!

Mustang Artistic Moments 2010 will be on exhibit
until Sunday, May 30.
You are cordially invited to view the inspiring and
multi faceted display of artworks created by the Art
Students of the River Valley Middle and High School
under the expert guidance of Amy Skaggs, the River
Valley Middle and High School Art Teacher.
This exhibition focuses on the Senior and Middle School Art Students of the River Valley School
System. Senior Mustang Artistic Moments 2010, is
sponsored by Sawyer Custom Woodworks. Unlike
other art events offered throughout the region, art
students are given the opportunity to be represented
by and sell their own works of art. The allocation of
funds earned from the sales of the artwork enables
the student to directly receive 50% of the amount of
the sale of their work. The schools Art Department
is given 30% of the total sales of this artwork which
is created within the established art curricula, to
provide a means of supplementary funds to be used
to assist in offsetting the art program’s restricted
budgetary allocations.

La Porte County has not lost its memory. “We
still have most of the documents” created to record
births, marriages, deaths, wills, probates, naturalizations, court cases, and property transactions,
says veteran local genealogist and historian Fern
Eddy Schultz.
Schultz will speak at the Genealogical Society
meeting at 7 p.m., Tues., May 11 on La Porte’s records -- in the courthouse, in outlying buildings, and
at the county historical society. Schultz was a former member of the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society and was the Founding President of the
La Porte County Genealogical Society. She is an active member of the La Porte County Historical Society, having served as President of the Board, and
is currently 1st Vice-President. She has served the
County for 20 years as the official La Porte County
Historian. She maintains an active schedule of lecturing and research and is currently a member of
the genealogical society’s board and serves as genealogist/historian for that society.
The society meets on the second Tuesday of every month at the Swanson Center for Older Adults,
910 State St., La Porte. The public is welcome at all
meetings. For a list of upcoming programs and more
information about the society’s activities in awards,
research, publication, and records preservation, visit www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~inlcigs/programs.

Also at the web site those who believe they have
La Porte County ancestors, and can prove it, can
find information on how to apply for First Families
of LaPorte (before December 1840), Pioneer Families (1841-1860), Settler Families (1861-1880), and
Civil War Families (1861-1865).

Outdoor Indiana magazine’s May-June issue is
the first to include an eight-page collectible fullcolor insert on a state park or reservoir property.
McCormick’s Creek State Park, Indiana’s oldest, is
the first featured.
The magazine will continue profiling one property each issue, until the centennial of Indiana state
parks in 2016.
The same issue also debuts what may become
an annual feature on Indiana’s best combination
of small town/big outdoors, with the lake town of
North Webster in Kosciusko County leading off.
Find these and other full-color articles you’ll get
nowhere else in the latest issue of the DNR’s 48page bi-monthly magazine.
Subscriptions are $12 for a year (six issues) or $20
for two years. You also can ask for Outdoor Indiana
at most Borders and Barnes and Noble stores in the
state, and at DNR properties. Single copies sell for
$3. To ensure you get this keepsake issue, subscribe

Summer Art Classes at Lubeznik
Computer Basics Workshops
This year’s crop of summer art classes at Lubeznik Center offer something for everyone. The
aptly named, “Craft Buffet” promises “a smorgasbord of creative projects to satiate your inner crafter” with projects ranging from paper making and
book binding to a decoupaged vase made from a recycled bottle. Favorites are back, including a SelfPortrait Workshop, Drawing with Neil Kienitz and
Acrylic Painting with Connie Kassal.
New offerings include a needle felting workshop
and “Knit to It,” a one-day introduction to knitting
for kids and parents. Gardeners will appreciate the
new Mosaic Tile Stepping Stone class — learn to use
colored tiles, cement and grout to create a keepsake
that will decorate your garden for years to come.
Speaking of the outdoors, several classes will creatively utilize sustainable principles and practices
in the making of art. A one-day workshop will teach
you how to convert wheat straw and old t-shirts
into beautiful handmade paper. Kids age 7 to 13 can
learn to make and decorate wool felt by recycling
old sweaters, or participate in Lubeznik Center’s
ArtGanic Summer Art Camp, featuring two weeks
of projects that are eco-friendly.
Dates, times and prices vary by class. Download a
complete listing at www.lubeznikcenter.org/Education/classes.html or phone 219.874.4900.
The Lubeznik Center is located at 101 W. 2nd St.,

the Coolspring Branch Library, 400N & Johnson
Rd., Michigan City. Come and discover that you can
handle a computer and that it’s fun. Basic computer
skills, searching on the Internet, and emailing will
be covered. For more information, phone 879-3272.

classrooms. Each project will receive up tot $250 for

Apparition & Late Fictions by Thomas Lynch
Four short stories and a novella grace the pages of this
book by a man who knows a lot
about people, their loves and
griefs, and especially about the
connections that bind us in both
life and death.
He proves it so eloquently in
this collection that will make
you want to keep reading until
the last page is reached.
I liked the first story, “Catch and Release,” the
best. A man’s father dies and his ashes are divided
among him and his siblings. Being a fishing guide,
and remembering how his father not only taught
him the art of fishing, but gave him his blessing to
follow his dream of being a “trout bum”, he grabs
dad’s remains (neatly settled in his thermos bottle)
and his fishing gear and goes on a day trip on the
river they knew so well, and...that’s as far as I go.
It’s a son’s-eye view, told with love. No recriminations--how refreshing...
“Bloodsport” tells of an undertaker’s reflection on
the death of a young woman by her husband’s hand,
a woman whose life he has followed ever since he
buried her father when she was but a teenager. This
is a strange yet compelling story of a man who, like
a scientist, observed, but never interfered in another’s life, and now is trying to work out in his mind
what led her on the path that ended in her murder...
From “Hunter’s Moon” -- “Some days on his walk
Harold Keehn thought about his wives. Some days it
was caskets. Others it was the heartbreaking beauty
of the natural world such as he had come to know
it.”
“Hunter’s Moon” introduces Harold, a casket
salesman, a very successful salesman, who has just
buried wife number three. After his first failed marriage and the loss of the next two, and the loss of his
daughter, Harold finds plenty of time to look back
and reach inward, trying to face his life honestly
and without prejudice. Can he do it?
“Apparition” is the novella and main piece of the
book. A minister divorces his cheating wife and
writes a best selling book on the subject -- Good
Riddance--Divorcing for Keeps that changes his life
in ways he never expected. In fact, he finishes a trilogy on divorce that makes his publisher very happy
and Adrian very rich and famous and a guru on the
subject, traveling the country and even ending up
on Oprah! But he is compelled to return to the site
of his former wife’s first infidelity as he looks back
on his very mismatched marriage. Can we sympa-

thize with Adrian?
High praise for Apparition & Late Fictions comes
from the Library Journal: “There is wisdom, courage, and great depth of feeling here. The pieces in
this powerful, meditative collection are all beautifully drawn; the title story is a masterpiece.”
Thomas Lynch is a Michigan funeral director, author and poet who divides his time between Milford,
Michigan and West Clare, Ireland.
His non-fiction book, The Undertaking: Life Studies From the Dismal Trade, was a finalist for the
National Book Award. Not too shabby! He has also
written two other works of non-fiction and three volumes of poetry. His stories, poems and essays have
appeared in such publications as Granta, The Atlantic, and Harper’s.
Now here’s a twist for you: I have two small books
that I think mothers should consider giving their
children! One contains sticky notes for all occasions
and the other gives advice to children on how to
“talk to mom.” Sound interesting? I thought so...
(Instant) Happy Notes!
by Sourcebooks, Inc (Naperville, IL) $8.99
This little package contains
sticky notes that mom can use
for a variety of reasons, days or
events. Sticky notes (especially
at work) can be annoying, but
used by mom at just the right
moment they can also encourage, uplift and bring a much
needed smile at the right moment. From waking up
to “Good Morning Sunshine” to an end of the work
day - “There’s nothing happier than a happy hour!
Wanna go?” I found these notes to be charming,
helpful and just what a mom needs to surprise and
delight her husband and children.
How to Talk to Moms
by Alec Greven $9.99
Sometimes moms have
a hard time explaining
how hard it is to be a mom!
This book with its glossy
bright pink cover goes
over a variety of day to
day subjects that explain
better that mom what she
is going through. From
chapters like “What’s Up With Mom?” to “Excuses,
Bribes and the Backfire,” you will be amazed how
the simple text and black and white line drawings
brings it all to sun bright clarity!
Till next time, happy reading and Happy Mother’s Day!
