They are ideal for pumping viscous fluids in a wide range of industrial, marine, agricultural, and commercial applications; capable of flow rates up to 24.8 GPM, pressures up to 125 psi, speeds to 1725 RPM, fluid temperatures up to 280°F, and viscosities up to 100,000 SSU. They are not suitable for pumping fluids with suspended solids or abrasive materials. These efficient pumps are recommended for nonabrasive, nonflammable liquids compatible with pump component materials and can be used for liquid circulation, lubrication, pressure boosting, filtering, medium pressure spraying, sump draining, drum and vat filling, and general fluid transfer applications. They are reversible and self-priming. Models with lubricated gears are capable of a 17-ft. vertical lift, depending on pump size, speed, and fluid. Flexibility Both close-coupled and pedestal-mounted pumps are offered in three materials of construction: 316 Stainless Steel—used for pumping clean, hard-to-transfer, high temperature and/or highly corrosive liquids respectively. Cast Iron and Bronze—used for transferring a broad range of nonabrasive fluids, including oil and water-based liquids. Gear types include spur (straight) gears that provide excellent suction lift for water or light oils, and a nonclogging design that easily handles higher viscosity fluids. Pedestal Gear Pump Driven by Pulley, Belt and Motor Durability Dayton pumps are simple in construction, with a minimum number of moving parts for less maintenance and longer life. They are offered in heavy-duty, intermittent, or light-duty models with many different design features including mechanical, lip, or packing seals; seal chambers with flush ports; oversized carbon graphite bushings; and integral ball bearings. Most Dayton gear pumps include a pressure relief valve that acts as a safety device, preventing pump and motor damage that can occur when the discharge line is closed. Two Mounting Configurations Close-coupled pumps are directly coupled to electric motors and easily installed in areas with limited space. Pedestal-mounted pumps can be driven by electric motors, gasoline/diesel engines, or pneumatic motors using pulleys/belts, gear boxes, or other coupling devices. Both types of pumps are ideal for reduced speed applications. Examples are shown on the right. Safety shields have been removed for illustration purposes only. How to Select Rotary Gear Pumps Step 1 Determine total pump discharge pressure required. Add suction lift (in feet) to discharge elevation (in feet); divide total by 2.31. To this figure, add the discharge pressure required, in psi. This sum is the total pump pressure needed. Step 2 Select pump and motor HP combination that delivers the flow (in GPM) required at, or above, the total pump pressure calculated in step 1. Step 3 Consider fluid viscosity. The viscosity/temperature of the liquid pumped will affect the pump speed (RPM). Where the viscosity/temperature SSU (Saybolt Seconds Universal) is greater than 500 SSU: • Pump speed (RPM) must be reduced to prevent cavitation. Use Table No. 1 as a guide. • Suction/discharge lines must be increased by at least 1 (or better 2) pipe sizes over the size of the pump ports. • The motor’s horsepower must be increased over the power required to pump water under the same pressure and flow. Use Table No. 2 to find the percentage increase in horsepower required for various pressures and viscosities. Note: An oil viscosity vs. temperature chart is included for reference. TABLE 1 — SPEED VS. VISCOSITY TABLE 2 — HP VS. Call or stop by your local Grainger branch, or go online to grainger.com/dayton Step 4 Consider the specific gravity of the fluid to be pumped and how it will affect horsepower requirements. If the specific gravity of the fluid is below 1.0 (specific gravity of water), consult the pump’s performance table for a recommended motor horsepower. If the specific gravity of the fluid is greater than 1.0, multiply the recommended horsepower in the pump’s performance table by this figure. The result is the required motor horsepower. Step 5 Consider liquid compatibility with pump materials. Liquids being pumped must be compatible with pump construction. See individual listings of pumps for the specific materials used in the wet-end construction of the pump. WARNING: Use only with nonflammable liquids compatible with pump component materials and in nonflammable/nonexplosive atmospheres. 4BA67 Replacement Seal, Options and Accessories Dayton offers many accessories to protect and maintain gear pumps, including vacuum switches, adjustable pressure relief valves, adjustable frequency drives for motors, pulleys, motor couplers, and drive motors. Call or stop by your local Grainger branch, or go online to grainger.com/dayton NSF Filter and Rendering Oil Pumps (Fat Fryer, Hot Oil Cooking Filter and Waste Oil) with long-life rollers provides strong pumping action from 3.8 to 8.2 gpm. Pumps are direct-coupled to custom 56C frame, ODP single-phase motors. Wetend parts are constructed from cast iron, steel, 303 stainless steel, carbon, ceramic, and Viton.® Dayton NSF self-priming, positive displacement, external gear and Teflon ® roller pumps feature castiron construction for high temperature use. They provide a nearly pulseless flow in applications where non-particulate and non-abrasive fluids are pumped. Not for use with water-based fluids. ODP singlephase motors have thermal overload protection. Complete pump and motor package is easy to install, or pump heads only can be purchased for custom installations. With Stainless Steel Helical Gears (Commercial-Duty) Nonclogging pumps are highly recommended for high flow waste oil rendering because they are able to pass nonabrasive particles and reduce oil shear. Feature heavy-duty stainless steel noncorrosive gears for quiet and long-life pumping action, and flows from 7.2 to 10.8 gpm. They are direct-coupled to 56C frame, ODP single-phase motors. For reverse rotation, rotate relief valve cover 180 degrees. Wet-end parts are constructed from cast iron, steel, stainless steel, carbon, graphite, ceramic, and Viton. Uses: Ideal for a wide range of commercial fat fryer hot oil cooking filtering, or waste oil rendering applications. • Coated with NSF accepted paint • Pumps can operate bi-directionally (reversible) WARNING: Use only with nonflammable liquids compatible with pump component materials and in nonflammable/nonexplosive atmospheres. Note: See Rotary Gear Pump Selection Guide on pages 3-5 for suggestions concerning installation, selection, options, and accessories. Carbonator Mount With Steel Gears (Light-Duty) Roller Pump (Commercial-Duty) Pumps feature carbon graphite bushing shaft support and pump flows from 2.2 to 4.4 gpm. Direct-coupled to carbonator-mount, ODP single-phase motors. Wetend parts are constructed from cast iron, steel, 303 stainless steel, carbon, graphite, and Viton. Unlike traditional pumps, roller pumps feature a nonclogging design that passes small, nonabrasive particulates without shearing oil.
