Spring has sprung and so has RSNC! Producers; shows and
members are popping up all over just like leaves on the trees.
I have been extremely busy this spring visiting with new
producers and scheduling new events all around the country.
In addition, I have had the opportunity to travel to a lot of
shows and help host five introductory clinics in the last seven weeks. I would like to thank the producers and
contestants for all of their very positive feedback about RSNC and the progress of the association.
We are just a few months away from our National Finals and a few hundred new members away from 5,000.
With your help, we can reach that goal and I promise we will throw a party at the Finals like none other. The
interest is out there and we proved it again right here in my home town of Fort Collins, Colorado. Last year we
blew the doors off of a membership drive with 91 beginners in a clinic. This year we turned around and asked
each of those new beginners to invite their friends and we literally exploded the sport with 151 in the clinics and
374 teams in the RSNC sanctioned event on the following day! I would like to welcome the new members and
thank Aaron Ralston, Mike Hansen, Jim Crossey, Mike O’Brien, Alan Kirkbride, Van Gemmill Gene Degroot
and the Wolfe boys for orchestrating a series of nine 9 very well run clinics all in one day.
If you haven’t reserved your stalls, motels or RV spots for the Finals yet please do so. They are filling up very
fast. You can call Charlene for stalls and RV spots at (580) 761-5249 and the host hotel is the Rodeway Inn at
(580) 226-1250 with an RSNC rate of $52 per night.
In addition to lots of Ranch Sorting, we have planned a week of fun and educational activities for both
contestants and the entire
family. You can sign up for a trip to
the casino, a shopping spree
in Ardmore or a boat party on Lake
Murray. Cowhorse trainer We are just a few months away Aaron Ralston, World Champion
from our National Finals and and Reinsman saddle maker Dale
reining trainer Tim Lynch
Martin will each be hosting a few hundred new members clinics throughout the week!

us, click on “points” at the top of the
page and then click on your
state. It will show where you stand in
the state extravaganza and the sort for the Reinsman saddles points race which ends at the National Finals with
18 saddles and lots of prizes up for grabs. Your goal is to be in the top 20 in your rating category from your state
to be eligible for saddles and prizes. If you are lucky enough to be in the top 3 in your category in your state, you
will get to represent your state as a team for the state extravaganza with 12 of those saddles for just that class.
Each team member can pick one partner and draw one partner within their team. The top three states get prizes
with the top two states winning six saddles each!
This is building to once again be the largest event in the history of the sport. Horse TV will be filming all week
along with Aaron Ralston host of “The Ride” on RFD TV. Each and everyone of you are welcome to help us
celebrate the sport by competing in events for brand new beginners, intermediate and experienced riders. Even
if you have never been to an RSNC event you are welcome at our National Finals.
Saddle up and come on over.

there are two options for entering.
A - $100/person with a 90% payback of all entry
fees (based on riding at 5 shows).
B - $50/person with a 70% payback of all entry
fees based on $50 (based on riding at 5 shows).
In all divisions including the Mega Classes there
will be a 5-ride limit with a mandatory 1 draw.
You can choose to draw up to all five if you wish.
All draw entries in the MEGA Classes will be $50.
In all divisions, those that rode at five sanctioned
shows will ride for 20% more in payback than
those that didn’t, but all contestants are welcome!
Each day at the finals the entries for the 1st class
of the day will close the night before. Be sure to
get your entries in so you don’t miss out.
•Masters Division
This class is a #10HC. All teams that qualify for
the incentive must designate to us before the class
starts, we do not know your ages! In addition
to vying for payouts, individuals representing
the Top Twenty Masters from their home state
will compete for special year-end awards. These
riders will enter the Finals with 20 to 1 points,
respectively, in the Masters’ Division. In addition
to a rider’s Top Twenty points, points earned in
this class only will determine the winner of the
Masters’ Division saddle and other year-end
awards.
•Graduated Beginners’ Division
All contestants with a rating of 2 or less may
enter as a sorter in the Graduated Beginners’
Division and compete for cash payouts. In
addition to vying for payouts, all 2009-2010
Season Graduated Beginners as well as individuals
representing the Top Twenty Beginners from each
state will compete for special year-end awards. All
Graduated Beginners will enter the Finals with no
less than 10 points in the Graduated Beginners’
Division. In addition to a rider’s Top Twenty
points, points earned in this class and the Rookie
#11 HC (2 cap on sorter) Sort will determine the
winner of the Graduated Beginners’ Division
saddle and other year-end awards. The Graduated
Beginners’ Division will be a pick 4 partners, draw
1 or draw up to all 5 partners. If a partner is a 3 or
above, they must stay in the gate.
•Graduated Rookies’ Division- No Handicap
All contestants with a rating of 3 or less may
enter in the Graduated Rookies’ Division and
compete for cash payouts. In addition to vying for
payouts, all 2009-2010 Season Graduated Rookies
as well as individuals representing the Top Twenty
Rookies from each state will compete for special
year-end awards. All Graduated Rookies will
enter the Finals with no less than 10 points in
the Graduated Rookies’ Division. In addition
to a rider’s Top Twenty points, points earned in
this class and #6 H/C will determine the winner
of the Graduated Rookies’ Division saddle and
other year-end awards. The Graduated Rookies’
Division will be a pick 4 partners, draw 1 or draw
up to all 5 partners. The draws for this division
will come from a pool of other 3 or below rated
riders.
•Novice, Amateur, and Open Divisions
All Novice, Amateur, and Open riders may enter
their respective classes and compete for cash
payouts. In addition to vying for payouts, the
Top Twenty Novice, Amateur, and Open riders
from each state will compete for the year-end
awards. These riders will enter the finals with 20
to 1 points, respectively. Riders graduating from
Novice to Amateur or from Amateur to Open
will enter the Finals with no less than 10 points.
These Top Twenty points, plus points earned in
respective qualifying divisions, will determine
the winners of the Novice, Amateur and Open
saddles and other year-end awards.
•One Hand Sort- In Arena #3 time permitting
This division is an All Levels Handicap but all
contestants must ride with one hand on the reins.
If you use two hands or switch hands at any time
during the run, the team is disqualified.
•Rated Youth Division
This division is for all youth 18 or below with
a rating of 1 or higher. It will be like all other
divisions with a pick 4 and draw 1 or draw up
to all 5. Youth will ride with each other in this
division.
•Beginner Youth/Adult
This division is for #1 rated youth 13 or under
only. This will be a Ranch Hand division where
the youth sorts and an adult or upper rated
contestant works the gate. It is a pick 4 and draw 1
or draw up to all 5.
•Olympic 3 Man Sort
Hey Sorters! This is a new one that simulates
perfectly gate sorting in the corrals at the ranch
with a 3 man competitive flair. Three pens are
used with two gates and 3 riders. The time will
start when one of the 2 riders to the right of the
judge crosses the start foul line. The 1st number
called will always sort to the judge’s right side.
From there on, the cattle will sort rotating to the
left and right pens in correct number sequence.
This is a 3-man ranch sort with no designated gate
persons or requirements on who sorts or how the
team members rotate sorting or holding gates.
•Double Back Reverse Sadie Hawkins
Here is a new one for ya’, how about a twist on
your typical sort. How many times have you,
well, mistakenly sorted in reverse order? Ok, so
the announcer calls number 6. The team must
sort cattle to the opposite pen and at some point
start sorting in reverse order the same cattle back
into the original pen. The kicker is only the cattle
that are successfully sorted back to the original
pen count. If the correct numbered cow starts
across the line but doesn’t completely clear before
reversing back the other way, that cow does not
count and the reverse must begin. Sound ok so
far? Oh yes and we added Sadie Hawkins; please
tell me you know about Sadie Hawkins. It’s where
the girls ask the guys to dance. Should be a mad
rush for those prime male ranch sorters. This will
be a pick 4-draw one or draw all 5. All guys that
are picked at least once must enter the draw once.
No guy can be picked more than 4 times.
•Biggest rule for the weekend
No whining, complaining or sulking. All caught
doing any of these infractions will be fined dunks
into the water trough!!!! Supervised by the camp
boss.
Class
Signup
Your time is just as valuable as ours and we want
to do everything possible to make this happen. One
of the ways that will help us to stay on schedule is to
close the books on the first class of the day the night
before. Doing this, our WONDERFUL secretaries
can put the teams in, draw up the class and post it
on the wall that night for all to see. Remember, we
do have some members that have the same name so
if you would put your state next to your name it will
help us to make sure that we have the right person
entered on a team. This could create the wrong
handicap for your team and we want to make sure
that you have the correct amount of seconds to sort.

Arena Three at Finals — Fun and Education!
More fun through knowledge! More fun
through Education! Sorting is fun, but winning
while sorting is more fun and being educated in
all aspects of the sport is the key to those winning
ways!
At RSNC our #1 goal is to grow the sport of
Ranch Sorting! Your ability to succeed in the
sport will keep you having fun so we want to
provide some tools at the National Finals to help
you succeed!
What knowledge does a great
sorter need?
1. Horsemanship - Tim Lynch
If you are even faintly familiar with Reining, you
will know of Tim Lynch. We are proud to announce
that Tim has volunteered his time to RSNC to
share his experiences and knowledge of horses.
And trust me, he has the knowledge. Tim has had
a 25 year career as a trainer focusing primarily with
Reining Horses. He has won five World Titles both
in the National Reining Horse Association as well
as various other breed associations. Tim was a top
competitor in NRHA, AQHA and APHA events
earning many credits to his name. Four Reserve
World Championships, An NRHA Reserve Derby
Championship, several Futurity Championships and
has been a finalist in dozens of National and World
class events. Tim has spent 10 years and over 35
trips to Europe, Japan and Mexico as a NRHA judge
as well as conducting horsemanship clinics not only
in these countries but Venezuela and Brazil as well.
Traveling to many countries, one is not required to
learn the foreign languages but Tim is unique. He
speaks both German and Spanish fluently and has
conducted clinics in each of these languages. Tim is
not only known for his expertise in other countries
but also the United States as he has given clinics
in 42 of our own wonderful 50 states. Due to a
spinal cord injury that caused Tim’s career to take a
different direction, he now is currently the General
Manager of the Hardy Murphy Coliseum and lives
with his wife, Tracy, on their ranch in a neighboring
town Marietta Oklahoma. We are thankful to have
Tim conducting this clinic for us and trust me; you
WON’T want to miss it.
2. Equipment - Dale Martin
Dale Martin is

a leader in the

with over 25 years
of experience as
a saddle maker,

3. Cattle reading skills - Aaron Ralston
“Launched in
2008, cow horse
productions and
Aaron Ralston are
dedicated to the
preservation and
promotion of the
traditions and artin-handling of the
working ranch
cowboy, both in and
out of the arena.
Raised on his
family’s ranch in western Colorado, he was taught
to respect the lifestyle and to take pride in being a
“Real” cowboy. The song chorus,”Don’t call him a
cowboy, until you see him ride,” could have been
the theme song of his childhood. He’s proud of
the accomplishments he’s had in the arena roping,
reining, cow horse, ranch sorting, but “titles mean
nothing if you’re not part of something beneficial
to a greater purpose,” says Ralston. The Ranch
Sorting National Championships has developed
the balanced environment of horsemanship/
stockmanship, friendship, and family while
carrying on the traditions of the American
cowboy. As the cowboy lifestyle becomes
preserved more and more through recreation, the
RSNC keeps stockmanship available to the “Real”
Cowboys at heart. He says he is excited to be a
part of something so close to his own heart.
Ralston has taken his ranching roots to much
success in the competition arena. Some of his
highlights include leading Team USA to a gold
medal at the 2006 world equestrian games in
Aechen, Germany while taking the bronze
medal in the individual. With many regional
and national titles in the reining world, Aaron
has begun to acquire titles and finalists in the
reined cowhorse world. Riding Spendin Peptos
Money, Ralston rode to the novice horse derby
championship at the Circle Y Ranch Derby in
San Angelo, Texas. You will find Aaron dividing
his competition time with his RFD-TV show The
Ride with Aaron Ralston. Join him every week as
he rides with fellow horsemen and women to live
his “Ride.”

Colorado Explodes with Ranch Sorters!
151 in Ranch sorting clinics!
An unbelievable 151 people signed up for
clinics on Saturday, March 20th in Fort Collins,
CO! That is in spite of a huge snow storm that
hit our state the day before and prevented even
more from coming. Last year, this campaign
attracted 91 new members and this year that
amazing number looked small. RSNC president
Dave Wolfe said he started his campaign at
the Colorado Horse Expo with a booth to
promote the association and the clinics. There
was lots of interest generated from many asking
how they could get involved. The clinics were
the perfect answer and an ice breaker to help
introduce new contestants. But that isn’t all he
did. He said he got on the phone and personally
encouraged over 400 members to invite a friend
to attend.
It is what RSNC
is all about. The
Association
has forgone
membership fees
to intrigue new
contestants to
give this sport a
try and when the
doors get opened
like that, the
contestants
show up.
And show
up they did.
The clinics
started at 8:30
on Saturday
morning with
3 different
sorting
pens set up for 3 clinicians and
3 different clinics. There were
15 sorters signed up for each
clinic and they received 2 hours
of instruction and hands on
sorting techniques from their
instructors. Gene Degroot and
Mike Hansen each had a group
to work with and Logan and
Kason Wolfe worked with a
great group of kids who were
extremely excited about the
sport. Then came round two!
At 11 am a whole other wave
of sorters showed up for their
turn in the clinics. This time
Dave Wolfe, Alan Kirkbride
and Jim Crossey took a turn at
introduicing the sport to the
onslaught of new contestants.
Then at 1:30 came round number
May-June 2010
3 with more trailers horses and ranch sorters
eager to learn about our sport. By this time it was
obvious that the huge CSU arena and 3 sorting
pens were an absolute must because the entire
facility was full. Mike Hansen, Van Gemmill and
Mike O’Brien finished up the clinics for the day
with a friendly competition of who could cheer
the success in their arena on the most. With out
question there was excitement in the air all day
simply because there was such a huge turn out of
eager riders ready to jump in and get involved.
RSNC’s growth is also attracting top clinicians
like Aaron Ralston. Aaron produces “The Ride”
on RFD-TV. He agreed to team up with us to
promote the CSU event and he was so impressed
by our sport that we are now making plans to
duplicate the clinics and event at several other
locations across the United States. The cameras
were rolling at CSU so we will all be looking
forward to exposure of RSNC on “The Ride” on
RFD TV early this fall. In the midst of all of the
ranch sorting clinics Aaron agreed to host an
advanced cow horse clinic of a limited number
of contestants. When RSNC spread the word that
clinic was filled on the first day. There is always
room for all of us to learn more and top clinicians
like Aaron are seeing that ranch sorting is literally
bringing hundreds of new contestants to the cow
horse industry.
On Saturday night a huge pot of Chile was
cooked up and contestants got to set around an
authentic chuck wagon and listen to RSNC sorter
Mickey Plemmons sing and play his guitar. It was
truly and enjoyable and relaxing opportunity to
take a break from a very busy day. But that was
only for about and hour and a half because at
7 pm the beginner sort class was starting up in
the big arena. There were 72 teams of beginners
sorting with beginners and for the first time ever
all 3 arenas were used at the same time for one
class. Much to everyone’s amazement the entire
1st round was complete in less than and hour! It
was a perfect end to a perfect day.
Sunday started at 8am with cowboy church
hosted by Harold Daniels of Fellowship of
Christian cowboys. Then at 9:00 the games
began and ran non stop all day right up to 6pm
with the last of 374 teams competing for an
overwhelmingly successful weekend.
As quoted by President Dave Wolfe. “If you want
May-June 2010 a large crowd at your events all you have to do is
go the extra mile to get them there. The interest
in Ranch Sorting is greater than any other new
equine sport in the country and all you have to
do is let your efforts be rewarded by marketing
correctly to everyone in your community and
by picking up the phone to make some always
appreciated personal invitations.” 151 in the
clinics and 374 in the competition says it all. Oh
My Gosh!!!

May-June 2010
Merrill, Wisconsin Event
Chism Trail Ranch’s first RSNC sorting was
a great success. Thanks to the new software
provided by RSNC the event ran smoothly
with no timing or scoring problems for
all four shows. Most of the contestants,
and now, new members had never ran in
a RSNC event before the show and were
happy to be able to do so in a warm, indoor
arena in their home state. Many are penners
who also are now enjoying the challenge of
ranch sorting. Dave Schreiner, whose first
RSNC event was the National Finals last
year (3rd in graduated rookie) said that it’s
just great to have an indoor place to chase
cows during the long winter months so we
keep our horses and ourselves tuned up
and ready for the summer. The cattle were
challenging at first but as the event moved
on more and more teams were bringing in
fast times. The impressive thing during the
show is that 23 different riders earned points
and you were never sure who was going to
end up on top. As one of our favorite riders
says after a few beers,”It just don’t git no
gooder than this!” Owner Sheryl Chism says
that they will hold 2 more double shows so
that we can get as many people qualified
for the National show down in Ardmore,
OK at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum from
June 28-July 3rd. Her husband Jeff adds,”
We want to get a good size caravan heading
that way to represent our state. We may
not have the most people but we would
like to make some noise.” We will have the
State Championship finals at our Ranch on
October 23 at 11 am. Chism also wants to
stop by the Jesse Chisholm Museum while
in Oklahoma to see if his heritage is part
of the famous Chisholm Trail. Dates for
their upcoming shows are May 15-16th,
June 5-6th, Aug 7-8th with the State Finals
on Oct 23rd. Anyone new to the sport or
veterans from other states are more than
welcome to come and whoop it up the
Ranch. Call Sheryl with any questions
or visit chismtrailranch.com for more
information and remember to keep Ranch
Sorting America’s #1 equine family sport!

22 ~ The Ranch Sorter
May-June 2010
FIRST EVENT OF THE SEASON at RR Ranch,
Mounds, OK BIG SUCCESS WITH 289 TEAMS
Mother Nature tried, but could not fool
us due to our friends Dean, Travis and
Lisa Cummings at the CPH Arena. With
a forecast of rainy weather, the event was
changed to their indoor arena and was an
overwhelming success in sorting, friendship,
and fun.
A lot of interest was shown in the Beginner
Ranch Hand class with 62 teams. We had
many new enthusiastic RSNC members
like Roger Mott with his own cheering
section that kept us entertained, and Bruce
Martin, competing in his first event, had
not realized he had made the final go and
had already unsaddled, but when his name
was called he was generously furnished a
horse by Randy Peterson to go out and win
his first paycheck placing fourth. With a
lot of cheering and support from everyone,
the top spot in the class was taken by Lisa
White (her first win) and Annette Lee.
Congratulations!
When we came to the Masters, everyone
was on their feet cheering. Talk about close
calls and lots of action, the Masters held up
to their name with the winning team being
Larry Newport and Victor Jones.
Excitement built and things got fast and
furious in the #8 HC with only seconds
separating the first, second, and third places
heading into the final go. But in the end no
one could catch up with the perfect score
of 30 head made by Annette Lee and Larry
Newport.
Our youth were great sports patiently
waiting on us older folks to move over so
they could have their turn in the spotlight.
Dusty Morris took home top honors with
Cody Uber coming in second. We want
to give special kudos to the parents and
grandparents who take the time and effort
to haul their children to these events. Ranch
Sorting is a family affair and the more we
can promote our future stars the better.
All the classes were very competitive being
won by only one head or just seconds. It’s
friendly competition like this that keeps
everyone interested and excited all day long
and wanting to come back for more.
We were very pleased to have Vince and
Annette Lee riding in the RSNC again.
With their sorting clinics at CPH and their
encouraging words and tips along the way,
they have helped many of us improve. It was
also great to see Travis Cummings back in
the saddle again after recovering from an
injury.
All of us would like to compliment our two
new participants in the sorting event. We
appreciate first-time judge, Dennis Gordon,
who did an outstanding job – and Susan
Yeager who stepped up to the microphone
to help relieve Rowdy towards the end of the
day. Good job, Y’all!!
We feel our show was a success due to the
help of Manager, Jimmy Goyer, Announcer,
Rowdy Fewell and Judge, Dennis Gordon
who kept things flowing without any
disruptions. All this could not have been
possible without Rex Cooper, our hardworking friend and right-hand man. Or
without our friends Jim and Susan Yeager,
Jim and Millie Van Sickle (photographer),
Janet Jackson, Randy Peterson, Debbie
Grubb and a host of others who helped us
before, during and after the event.
We hope to see you and the sunshine on
May 8th.

four National Associations competing for recognition within the sport.
