Dues weren’t doing it as they had in the past. Fees for the shows were good, but not enough, simply because operating costs had gone up. Services had increased without capitol to back them up. A solution was needed and fast. Churches had built sanctuaries doing it. Colleges had saved academic programs doing it. Why couldn’t we do it? So the appeal to raise funds by buying a symbolic brick was made. 5330-B Gibbons Drive Carmichael, CA 95608 Nonprofit Org. 501 (c) 3 (916) 971-3713 telephone (916) 971-1538 facsimile www.SacFineArts.org [email protected] email www.facebook.com/sacfinearts Our Mission is to encourage the creation and presentation of original visual arts, to support the cultural life of the community, and to encourage all artists to fulfill their potential. a community partner supports my efforts with food, got me thinking about it when she suggested I honor the memory of the teacher, Lois Upham, who in 1980 got me painting in earnest. At the risk of sounding sappy or maybe I’ve been watching too many Hallmark movies, but putting a name on a brick has become a wave of love and remembrance. You get the picture. The project has morphed, yet the real intent remains. The Center, this unique treasure, is worth saving and buying a brick is a way. Thanks to all of you who have climbed aboard the KOCO Express or plan on doing so. The first club to be exposed to the idea was NCA at the November meeting. The response was fantastic! Twenty-two people said, “Yes this is worthwhile and we think it will work.” As of this writing 40 SFAC members and non-members have bought one or more bricks. Then along the way something wonderful happened. It started when Joan MacMurray bought a brick in memory of Valerie McPhail. Then someone bought one for Rodney Jones. A new phenomena was occurring. The original intent was there: KOCO, “Keep our Center Open”. But in addition, people were honoring a loved one or cherishing a memory. Grandmas were honoring grandchildren, spouses were buying bricks for one another. My wife, who thinks my art is demented, but Sacramento Fine Arts Journal page 1 A Note From Our President It’s the New Year…2014! Some of us will make New Year’s Resolutions. I resolve to be loving to my wife, to finish my three children’s books still in production, to find an agent to sell them to someone and to explore the “why” of photography, an art form that has meaning far beyond the print of whatever. As important, I resolve to help 2014 become an exciting year for the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. It’s our Center, we “own” it. We own it in trust for our members and the public as well. There are exciting events on the SFAC art horizon: NCA’s gala celebration of its 75th Anniversary, new workshops and classes by prominent artists, the popular Animal House show, and performing arts events to be announced and not to be missed. And much more… We will support and present shows and exhibits not to be experienced at any other venue in Northern California. Don’t miss any of them. SFAC staff will keep you advised of the upcoming events. 2014 will be a breakout year for the Center. Stay tuned! Trailing 8-1 just a week before, Oracle Team USA sailed away from Emirates Team New Zealand by 44 seconds to retain the Auld Mug, the oldest trophy in international sports, in a winnertake-all finale on San Francisco Bay. And SFAC member Michael Corlew was there to get some of the exciting moments from the competition. After getting our sea legs back with some sweet treats provided by SFAC members for this last meeting of the year, we enjoyed prints of our members’ personal bests from the year. Thanks to all for a great year of photography, competitions, and field trips, and here’s to an even better 2014. Get those cameras tuned up while you have the chance! The next photo shoot is only a month away. Year in Review As a brief reminder of what the SFAC Photo Club enjoyed over the past year, here are some highlights. We hope to have some new activities that will help boost our financial status as well as the Center status. Please set March 1 aside to participate in our art supplies rummage sale. We are extending the time this year. Time will be from 9AM to 5PM. Bring anything related to doing art. We would like to spread the word to other art groups. So let the groups that you are in know about the sale. It’s fun and also productive for everyone! Fiber Art display in the recent Fiber Arts Show and Sell in Gallery 3 December All-Club Potluck It was something you surely should not have missed. The camaraderie of artists extends to all of the arts, and we had a wonderful trio who provided delightful music. What was really wonderful about it was they were so young to be so advanced. Entertainers Kendra, Ben and Jack perform at Sacramento Fine Arts Center All-Club Holiday Potluck I have been encouraging the fiber artists to consider taking part in the other shows here at the Center. We still have not become completely convinced that the art world sees fiber art as an art in itself. So we are working on convincing ourselves first! Then will come the integration. This year has been one where we feel that we have been able to educate people about fiber. The fact that we use fiber every day in some way. That it is important to recognize these products and appreciate them. We look forward to a productive year ahead. What ever comes along it will be exciting! Carol Wittich The group is called the “Journey Juniors,” and they are Ben and Jack Longaker, 11-year-old twins, and Kendra Dantes, 10 years old. They were amazingly proficient on several instruments, and Kendra also sang. The food was great! We’ve all enlarged our Horizons! Thank you WASH! Members’ Newsletter January/February 2014 President’s Message Happy New Year NCA! It is the 75th Anniversary year for NCA and I hope that you make a resolution to be more involved with your NCA this year. Let’s think back to the events of 2013 and thank all of those who worked so hard to make it a successful year. We averaged 100 members attending the monthly meetings and had the largest number of entries in years for the membership show, Interviews, and the international show, BOLDX . Our members attended workshops and their art was represented in statewide shows, KVIE art auction, Effie Yeaw, CAL EXPO State Fair and many members’ works were in various galleries throughout Sacramento. Thanks to everyone who volunteered time for NCA. Our group is a 100% volunteer run organization. Without your help there is no NCA. The 2014 kick-off is the GALA on second Saturday, Jan. 11th at the SFAC, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The awards ceremony for the Gala’s special juried membership show with the theme of “Art Deco &/or Celebrations” will take place at 7 p.m. This second Saturday is different from other second Saturdays because of the planned additional events of the evening, such as a costume contest, photo op’s and more. We hope you attend our grand event. Please read the annual letter and E-Blasts for more information on the many events planned throughout the year. It’s a New Year and like many of you, it’s time for me to make those resolution lists. Some of the things on my list for 2014 are: to paint and create more art this year, to try new and many different ways to create art, and most importantly, to give to NCA and make this a good final year as your President. I wish you a very healthy, happy, artful and prosperous year! Keep creating! Sincerely, Sally Artists’ News Myra Steward had three paintings accepted into the Sandhill Crane Festival in Lodi. NCA History Harold M. Ward, 1889 - 1973, is the founder of NCA. He was born in Brooklyn, NY and was a descendant of Samuel Morse, the inventor of the telegraph. He came to California and established the art department at Sacramento Junior College in 1923. NCA Board Members Art Sense from Gretchen Sally Durante, President – 916-202-6307 or [email protected] Happy holidays, my friends! Below is a little gift - a value scale, an important tool for every artist. It gives your paintings depth and if not used properly your work is going to look flat. It is the implement that gives your art a 3D look. It should be firmly implanted into your head. This scale is in black and white, but you’ll have to be able to change colors too - not easy. Your art depends on your skill in this area. All rules may be broken but you have to know them before you can brake them successfully. The more you know... Jones, Director of the Crocker Art Museum, will speak on the importance of the Museum to the community and its accomplishments. Ms. Jones was appointed the Director of the Crocker Art Museum in 1999. She is the first director in the 109 year history of the museum to be appointed jointly by the Crocker Art Museum Association and the City of Sacramento in a partnership. Ms. Jones has played an important role to shape the museum's future. She is working to ensure that the Museum plays an active role to further the institution as a focal point for culture and visual arts February 12th: Patris will be presenting “How to create distance in your artwork with atmospheric perspective.” She prefers painting on location, following in the tradition of the Barbizon School and the Impressionists. Her work is described as “peaceful and positive” - qualities she attributes to a connection she feels with the Creator. She has recently been juried into several national plein air painting competitions. Patris served as a commissioner with the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission from 2002-08. Her artistic path led her to open her own studio, gallery and art center near downtown Sacramento, the Patris Studio and Art Gallery. NEWSLETTER January & February 2014 Sacramento Fine Arts Center 5330-B Gibbons Drive, Carmichael, CA 95608 General Meetings: Held Second Mondays Odd Months, Days 1:30 P.M. Even Months: Evenings 7 P.M. From Our President Patty Larsen A GOOD YEAR! 2013 was a good year for WASH. Many good things happened. We had two outstanding shows with excellent participation. Over 110 entries were received for the Member Show and 153 entries for the Open Show. Both Second Saturday receptions were well attended and a lot of fun. Monthly meetings featured outstanding artists and demonstrations, providing both information and inspiration. The two workshops led by Kathy Lemke Waste and Phyllis Rapp proved to be very popular. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback on both. Our membership roll reached 135 members by the end of the year. This may be an all-time high for WASH. 2014 promises to be an even better year. We already have a full slate of outstanding artists lined up for our monthly demonstrations. (See the list below in this newsletter.) Rebecca Jaggers and her crew are already well into preparations for our April Member Show. Joyce Wilson has signed two extraordinary workshop leaders — Dale Laitinen, April 13th, and Lian Zhen, August 16-18. If you are interested in either of these workshops, you should register as soon as the forms become available. We expect both workshops to be oversubscribed. And, last but certainly not least, we are looking forward to the High School Watercolor Show, January 28 – February 15. Barbara Killeen and Bobbi Allison are hard at work preparing for the show. That, in fact, is what ensures the success of WASH every year . . . the huge amount of volunteer help provided by WASH members. In addition to the importance of volunteer help to the health of the organization are the many benefits that members can receive from volunteering. If you haven’t lent a hand recently, step up the next time someone is asking for help with a WASH activity. You may be surprised at how your participation as a volunteer enriches your WASH experience. Together we can make this the best year ever for Wash activities and for its members. JUDGES SELECTED FOR WASH MEMBERSHIP AND OPEN SHOWS The WASH Show Committee is excited to announce who our judges will be for the 2014 shows! For the membership show in April (receiving March 21 and 22, put it on your calendar!) Jeannie Vodden has agreed to be our juror. Since she is a popular teacher in the Sacramento area and has also recently done a demo at a WASH meeting, many will be already familiar with her stunning, vibrant work using layered transparent staining watercolors as well as with her engaging personality. We are honored to have her as a judge, given her dense schedule of shows, teaching classes and giving workshops, including one for the California Watercolor Society coming up in 2014. Check out her terrific website at www.jeannievodden.com/about-jeannie/. The other fantastic news from the Show Committee is that Chris Messer has agreed to be our juror for our Open Show. (Receiving is August 22 and 23, put that on your calendar!) Chris Messer is the first of the 10 hot artists “Ones to Watch” featured in Watercolor Artist Magazine, 2013 December issue. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and the California Watercolor Society. She has her own gallery in Mt. Shasta where she lives and paints, but she also exhibits and teaches extensively all around California and Oregon. She says about her work, “Color means everything to me. I love to push it, allow it to flop across the page and use it as a tool to pull the viewer through my painting.” See more about her at her website, http:// chrismesserart.com. By taking bits and pieces of magazine paper, printed items and found items, and adhering them to his hand-sketched picture layout, he creates wonderful multi-layered creations. He works with recycled materials to create works of art with a surprising range of colors, textures, and patterns. Lian is a popular watercolorist and Chinese painting teacher with an international following. Lian received his BA in Art at UC Berkeley in 1992 and a MA in Architecture from MIT in 1996. His paintings have been featured in magazines and Splash4; his paintings hang in many institutional and private collections. He has written four books. WASH is excited to have him back in Sacramento in 2014. WASH Presents a Workshop with Dale Laitinen April 13, 2014, 10 am to 4 pm at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center $65 for WASH members, $75 for non-members. Dale Laitinen has been painting in watercolor for over 35 years. He is well known in Northern California for his landscapes of the Sierras, mountains, rocks and water; one of the signatures of Dale’s painting is the long view with natural forms of the topography being foremost. He is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, and Watercolor West. His work has been featured in several magazines and books: Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Magic, Splash, just to name a few. This workshop will concentrate on a Sierra Landscape. His website is www.dalelaitinen.com. PAINTING OF THE MONTH David Peterson won the painting of the month for October and Rebecca Jaggers won for November.
