Final Newsletter - Sacramento Fine Arts Center
Message from the President Congratulations to Joan McMurray and the SFAC Volunteers on the 2008 American Watercolor Society Show! It was a prestigious exhibit for the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. Thank you again for all your hard work on this event. William Willis, • Lisa Foucher has accepted a full time job and is no longer in the SFAC office. Members and visitors who meet Lisa enjoy her outgoing, friendly personality. At SFAC for three years, Lisa helped in many ways. She not only worked as the Chief Operations Officer, she also dedicated hours of volunteer time at all our fund raisers. We will miss her laughter and upbeat ways. Stop in on Saturdays and you will see Lisa working in the gift shop on her volunteer job as Chair of the Gift Shop. Good luck Lisa! • Sharon Drysdale has accepted a new position with SFAC. Her new title is Associate Director. She will carry out the policies set by the SFAC Board of Directors and will work directly under and be supervised by president of the board, William Willis. Sharon has worked in the Center office for 1 ½ years and is a valuable volunteering member as well as employee. She will be assuming additional duties as well as overseeing a new employee. Thank you Sharon for taking on additional responsibilities. POSITION AVAILABLE Administrative Assistant for the Sacramento Fine Arts Center Five days a week, Tuesday – Saturday 11:00am to 3:00pm plus two hours the 1st Monday of each month (board meetings) Net take home pay: $10 per hour For employment application, a list of needed skills and a summary of the positions duties call William Willis, SFAC President 721-4214 or stop by the Center for an application. March / April 2008 Volume 22, Issue 2 Applications must be submitted by April 1 American Watercolor Traveling Exhibit from New York By the time you receive this newsletter our American Watercolor Society’s Traveling Exhibition will be closed and at the next gallery in Bradenton, Florida. It takes a lot of people to make a show like this successful. Our Publicity Chair, Jackie Carroll sent out many notices to advertise that the finest of watercolors will be at our gallery. We had visitors come from all parts of the state plus a few from Tennessee, North Carolina, Massachusetts, who were visiting relatives during this time. And many of those visitors took postcards and sent them to friends and classmates so they could visit our gallery. They also shopped in our gift shop buying many of your items. I knew the watercolor show would draw a lot of visitors to our gallery, but my goal was to make them all feel comfortable, to see what a wonderful gallery we have and make them want to come back to see other shows or participate in our workshops and classes. Did you notice the beautiful bouquet of flowers in the Gallery, those were donated by Bonnie from Procida Florist. Thank you, Bonnie. For those of you who missed our gala opening you missed some wonderful cello music and a great array of food. Many people asked who catered this event as it was so elegantly prepared. Dorothy Steed and her staff of workers did an outstanding job. Thank you all. The food just kept coming. Felice Keck was able to get an assortment of wine that we all enjoyed and it just kept coming too. Thank you, Felice. Our Second Saturday Artwalk was just as spectacular with music by Noël Sandino and Group, with guitars and drums. Thank you to David Hanlon, Kandi Thompson, Jan Miskulin, Margaret Pollan, David Peterson, Dorothy Steed and Dick Beymer who donated their art to be raffled at the end of the show. The monies received will help to defray some of our costs to host this wonderful show. Our lucky visitors will receive your framed artwork. Thank you. We also were very fortunate to have several tours come to our center to view the Watercolor Exhibit. Our docents Jan Miskulin and David Peterson were there to guide them through and answer all their questions. Thank you. Sherry Painter did an outstanding job of keeping all the time slots filled for the docents. Thank you Sherry. And to all of you wonderful docents who donated your five dollars, your time, and made our visitors feel good to be here in our gallery. I thank you. Many of you did several docent shifts. My thanks again. We could not have done it without your help. Last but certainly not least, thanks to Warren Wittich who brought his tools to help with uncrating and recrating of the paintings. Thank you again Warren. Last year Kandi Thompson did an outstanding job in organizing this event for our Center. The entry fees collected were used to help defray some of the Center’s expenses. The volunteers that helped Kandi in various ways are listed below. Kandi has retired from Magnum Opus but we hope you will all offer your time again this year. Kandi, thank you for past years of chairing Magnum Opus. All donations are tax deductible. Items must be ready to display. Bring any art piece you would enjoy having in your own home that would sell for at least $100. Tickets will be sold for $75 and each person with a ticket is guaranteed to leave with a piece of art. All paintings will be photographed and listed on our website so purchasers can see the show early. Not only will you be helping the Center with your donation, your name will be getting out in the community. The more donations we receive, the more tickets we can sell, so start bringing in your donations today! Check the website often to see the work as it arrives. • Animal House is in the SFAC galleries now. 2nd Saturday reception: March 8 from 5:30 to 8:30 • Miniatures are popular with visitors. During the Holiday Sale we raised over $300 from these donations. It has been decided to display them on a continuing basis. Help SFAC by donating 5x7s or smaller framed paintings. • The Gift Shop has been expanded, with new unique items added. Lisa is always looking for new artisans to show their work. If you or someone you know would like to participate, Make an appointment with Lisa, 916.487.4472 for an interview. • Rental/Sales Gallery will receive new work on Saturday, March 29 between 10:00am and 3:00pm. The Rental Staff would like all work delivered at this time. Late entries will be stored in the bin and hung as space allows. Fee is $5.00 each artwork (limit 4 pieces) and $1.00 each for small paintings to be displayed in the studio. Maximum size for the small works is 11x14. • Country Club Plaza has generously donated prime space to SFAC to showcase our Center. Paintings, umbrellas, gift shop items are all displayed along with information about SFAC. The store is located across from Macys. Thank you Veon Zentner and Flosssie Phillips for acquiring the space and maintaining the display. • NOTICE: 2008 Membership fees were due in January. The next newsletter will be sent only to paid members. Don’t miss out! If you lost the membership form, just send one check for SFAC membership ($40) and one for each of the club(s) you want to join. NCA ($25), WASH ($20). With the checks include your choice of SFAC volunteer duties for 2008. For those who want to be Members-at-Large, the membership is $60. • The Park District replaced the overhead gallery lights with more efficient ones. Felice Keck researched special lighting for the galleries and found there is not a viable way to install it. During the AWS show, several viewers pointed out that light from the windows caused glare on the glass making it hard to see the paintings. The board is considering putting film on the windows to help cut the glare. The donations toward lighting would be used to defray the cost of the film. Thank you for your generosity. • There are many more improvements the Center needs to make. and we are starting a drive to fund them. The window film will be costly. The galleries need new carpeting. New paint is needed throughout the Center. What are your priorities? Watch the thermometer on the studio wall as donations for improvements come in. Your name will be added to the rising thermometer. All donations are tax deductible. Chatauqua Playhouse “The Best Man” March 28 - April 27 Gore Vidal’s play of a heated race for a party’s presidential nomination. A timely & riveting drama! A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION Founded 1939 Message from the President Hello all, The Holiday season is behind us and spring is just around the corner. I hope you all enjoyed the Holiday potluck in December. A huge thank you to All of the members who brought food, helped setup, and came together to celebrate the season. It’s group participation that makes us the successful organization that we are. On that note, we have a couple of opportunities for participation: Sheila Jacobs has been one of our hospitality cochairs for 3 years now and would like to pass the torch. Thank you Sheila! The co-chair position involves making sure st we have snacks/setup/cleanup for our monthly meetings, coming to the board meeting the 1 Wed. of each month and, hopefully, having fun in the process. Barbara Peck will remain a co-chair of hospitality. Opportunity #2: We need a promotions person. Shirley Neff has done this in the past as well as organize our bus trips. She will still be organizing trips but would like to release the promotions piece. This position involves getting press releases out to publications/organizations for upcoming events such as demonstrations and shows, coming to the board meeting and distributing show cards/flyers to local Art “hot spots” such as art supply stores or schools which teach art classes. Our club and the Fine Art Center would certainly benefit from having more of a membership base. In order for us to do this, I think we need to let more of our community know we are here. This position would help us do just that. If you are interested in filling either of these positions, please contact me or one of the other board members. Our monthly meeting raffle has been a fabulous success! Thanks to all who buy tickets, donate items and Gretchen Ryan for chairing this great cause. The proceeds benefit our Aspiring Artist Show. We had a terrific turnout this year. 78 pieces were received and hung. We gave participant ribbons and special ribbons for Best in Show, 5 Awards of Excellence and 10 Awards of Merit. Thank you Sherry Painter, show-chair, our MP judges and all who helped in receiving/hanging. Great Job!! On a personal note, I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve such a dynamic and diverse organization. Becoming a member, then board member, of NCA has provided me with blessings I had not previously dreamed of. We have a dedicated and truly wonderful group of artists here. I am proud and honored to be among you. Sincerely, Alex Wilson President NCA ********************************** th NCA Artists News…..Susan Recely had a painting accepted for the North Valley Art League’s 24 annual National Show at Carter House Gallery in Redding. She is a signature member of several outstanding art associations, including the Society of Western Artists, East Bay Watercolor Society, California Arts League and the Transparent Twelve Watercolor Association. Henderson’s work has been the focus of numerous solo and two-person shows. Doris received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Art School at the University of Houston. NCA members are encouraged to sign up for her April 14-16, 2008 oil painting workshop through the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. APRIL 9 – Daniel Mundy – “See and Put, or Paint and Hope” Please join us at the NCA meeting April 9, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. for a painting demonstration by Daniel Mundy. Daniel started painting over 35 years ago. “Along the way, I chased a lot of rabbits” he says. “But I kept coming back to the brushes. Now I’m on my last trick. “There’s nothing left to do but paint,” and paint he does. Daniel’s work has a clarity of color and light that often gives the viewer the feeling that one could almost walk into his paintings. The landscapes are capturing dramatic lighting and atmospheric effects with poetic emotion. He uses layering, brush work and some broken color to achieve richness in paint that entices the viewer into the environments he creates on canvas. Daniel will be presenting “See and Put, or Paint and Hope.” Daniel has a studio in Rocklin, California. Please check out his web site at http://www.danielmundy.com/ . ***************************** COMING speakers for NCA: May 14 – Rhonda Egan – Oil Painting; June 11 – David Peterson – Painting Excitement We have started planning for next year’s NCA presentations. Earl Boley will be starting in September with “Painting Fast and Loose,” followed by the Bold Expression Juror, and Member’s critique. In 2009 we are exploring figure drawing demonstration, on-line art classes demonstration, sculpture, silk painting, and another member’s critique. It is still early enough for you to recommend a speaker or volunteer to make a presentation before the NCA general meeting. Happy New Year to you! Right now at this moment your WASH board members are hard at work keeping your watercolor club running and making it better. Our program chair, Doris Bogovich, has been busy arranging new programs. Our show co-chairs, Sondra Rogers and Marnell Nicknig have the ball rolling for a great Membership Show. Our new secretary, Joyce Wilson is a welcome addition to our board. Our treasurer, Barbara Killeen, has stayed on for yet another year! Lauri Dickinson is our new newsletter director, be sure to send her your good news. Scholarship chair, Will Willis reports a great Scholarship Show has been received and will be in the gallery along with NCA’s Aspiring Artists’ Debut Show. Our club is full of energy, and we are looking forward to another exciting watercolor year. Someone asked me during one of my stints as a docent at the AWS Traveling Show: “Why Should I Join WASH and the Sacramento Fine Arts Center?” I was taken back a bit because I could not immediately come up with an answer. In the material sense, there really is no reason to pay dues and join us. You can be an artist and paint watercolor without joining. But--- look at the facility we use for classes, the shows and receptions… Don’t we want this in our community? It needs your membership fees to exist. Here, we get the opportunity to associate with other artists, learn from those more experienced than we are and rub shoulders with artists like ourselves. Plus we can give beginners a helping hand. Don’t we want this in our community? It needs your membership fees to exist. What we get out of these fees is priceless: the facility, the associations, and the growth as artists. “Brush It Up” -David Peterson NEWSLETTER Newsletter Submittals: Deadline for the May -June 2008 Newsletter is April 1st.
