Spring 2012 at BLYC - Buckeye Lake Yacht Club
Buckeye Lake

FROM THE BRIDGE 
Commodore

The first order of business is the SemiHello all! Spring is springing all around
us! With the change in seasons, it brings us
all to looking forward to being out at beautiful Buckeye Lake! It also will be bringing
an end to the “beers from around the world”.
If you have not been into the club lately, be
sure to get a look at the must anticipated
jacket our fierce beer drinkers have earned!
Not a beer drinker? The jackets are also
available for purchase if you would like.
The bar and kitchen are doing great financially and thanks to the reduced “pub menu”
for the winter months we have come out
shining! Thank you Chef Matt and Andrea
and all of Team BLYC for their hard work
and dedication! Job well done! Thank
you, too, to all of our members for their
patience and their appreciation of the “pub
menu.” We are all looking forward to the
warm months and Chef Matt showing us
May, 2012 - Vol. 21, Issue 3
Annual Meeting, May 6 at 2 pm. I think
you will be proud of your Board and what
they have accomplished in the past few
months.
Once again we had some great parties in
April and they were all well attended. The
Havana Nights party was special to me as I
had several family members there and was
priviledged to be able to dance with my
mother. She is 88 and still dancing! We are
so fortunate to have a club where we can be
proud to bring family members and out of
state guests. I’m hoping it can always be
like that.
Just a little brag, my boat was the first in
the water this year. But it wouldn’t have
been possible without the help of my son
and grandchildren. They are great crew!
We have lots of great things planned for
May so check out the calendar and bring you
family and friends out for a fun time.
And on a more serious note, if you have
not paid your dues please remember to put a
check in the mail.

Memorial Day Weekend is fast approaching. I hope that you will join your fellow
members for the festivities, especially the
Commodore’s Ball. It has an ostentatious
name for a really casual, good time.
Governor Besanceny will be our emcee for
an undoubtedly great time! The Governors

WOW... What a great turnout for the
Spring Cleaning Day. Many hands make for
quick work. Thanks to all of the members,
juniors, and staff who worked many hours
preparing our club for the coming season.
I would like to thank Sue Zeiher for making the beautiful BLYC wind sock; it looks
so much better than the orange airport type
socks we’ve flown in the past.
Also, a special thanks to Vic and Tami
Schroeder who have graciously offered to
fertilize/treat the grounds on Watkins island
this year.
Following is a list of the attendees (as
shown at right). Thank you all for your hard
work and dedication to BLYC.

AHOY! The sailing season is here! The
Mean Green Thistle Regatta is over and the
Lambrecht Cup Series begins Sunday, 5/20,
2-4 pm. Skippers Mtg. 1:30 (PHRF start 2,
One design separate start.)
A special thanks to Scott Savage, from the
Hoover Sailing Club, who came down and
led a rousing, “war room” style, hands-on,
racing tactics training session (see the photo
at rightt). Most of our sailors were here for
the event and even the race hardened old
“seadogs” learned a thing or two.
The sailboat racing training program has
been a success this winter and continues in
May with the following events planned:
If you missed the “Racing Rules” seminar in March, by popular demand we are
running this again on Sunday, May 13, at 2
pm. This is the last training session before
the racing begins, so come on down and get
your rules right.
If you want to crew, or you are looking
for crew, let me know and I will help hook
you up with a boat. 740-504-9578.
We’re going to need lots of help to run the
Lambrecht Cup races this summer, especially if we start both the cruisers and the one
designs.
If you are not going to sail, but would like
to participate in race management activities
including; timing, scoring, mark boat opera-
tion and an occasional beer when reviewing
the race results, your input is greatly appreciated. Please contact me and I will see you
are put to work. Don’t be shy, step forward
and support your sailing friends!
That’s all for now, see you on the water, at
your favorite resort, BLYC!

The lake level is at summer pool level, the
spillway gates are closed.
The two story house is renovated and is
ready to be leased.
The bills for docks and storage have been
sent out. If payment is not received as of
April 30, 2012, a member’s account is
deemed delinquent. The dock or storage
space will be subject to reassignment to the
next eligible applicant.
Dock holders who have vacated their slip
with a hoist, must have the hoist removed.
We have several boat docks, storage
spaces and garages available to rent.
If you wish to rent a dock, garage, or boatyard storage, please complete a “Rental
Request Form”. The form is available on
THE NEW DOCKS
New docks have appeared immediately
east of our club. I interviewed Commodore
Bob Zeiher to get our questions answered
get this information out to you the members.
What got this started ?
Boat Boys managed by Tim Figgins (a
BLYC member ) sought to put new docks in
front of their new location , formerly Sayre
Bros. Marine. This is permitted by the State
of Ohio not the yacht club.
What did Boat Boys propose ?
That Boat Boys build their docks then
lease the new docks facing our club and in
turn for the yacht club to lease the docks
further east at area 8.
What was your role Commodore?
I was authorized by our board with the
Well, this month, not too far aft … just a
few weeks.
Recently, I was invited to serve as the
Principal Race Officer for the Buckeye
Intersectional Regatta hosted by The Ohio
State University Sailing Team. The regatta
was held at Hoover Reservoir the weekend of
April 7-8. It was a really exciting event with
14 teams representing 12 universities from all
over the Midwest and as far away as Auburn!
So what makes this regatta the subject of a
history article? Well, it was history in the
making!
In our history, a number of BLYC Junior
Sailors have gone on to race at the college
level, several with great success. But, this
may have been the first time ever, and was
certainly the first time in recent history, that
BLYC was so well represented. Former

online, printed, or is available at the club

Please submit this form if you wish to
cancel or change your assigned space or add
a boat hoist. All changes require prior
approval.
As members are using the boat yard and

as you enter or exit.
If your property in the boat yard has as red
ribbon attached to it, please contact me. As I
show no record of an assigned space for it.
Please contact me with any questions or
concerns regarding docks and rentals.
An early reminder, the Classic Boat
Regatta is August 17-19.
We are asking that all Watkins Island dock
holders make their slips available during this
event. The event is open to the public on Sat.

Historian
BLYC Junior Sailors Evan Miller and Gwen
Mulvey both raced for Ohio State (who, incidentally, won the regatta), Wittenberg's team
included Austin Miller and Halle Harklau,
and Mallory Miller sailed for Ohio U.
Additionally, 2011 BLYC Team Coach Libbi
Dust was also there, representing Michigan
State. They all sailed very well, finishing in
the top ten in their respective division fleets
and overall.
Gwen is the current Commodore of the
BLYC Sailing Club and, along with her committee, put on a great event. She even recruited our own BLYC Vice Commodore Gayle
& husband Tom (yes, "Mom & Dad
Mulvey") to help out. They worked tirelessly
all weekend to feed, support, and entertain the
80+ college sailors and support personnel in
attendance. A truly enjoyable and successful
regatta weekend with great representation
from our Club.
Congratulations to all our BLYC Sailors!
You continue to make us proud.
