Lobster Tanks
LB Series Daily Maintenance
Visually check system every morning for:
- Foam: When foam is present remove with piece of clean cardboard or other semi-rigid material.
- Determine the cause and remove the sources.
- Foam forms from dead/wounded lobster or when contaminants are introduced to system.
- Dead, weak or damaged Lobsters must be removed
- Contaminants can come from unrinsed lobsters, or from feeding lobsters*
*NEVER feed lobsters, food will foul tank.
Lobsters kept at 45° can go without eating for over a month
- Never use a de-foaming agent, this only puts contaminants back in the water.
- Water Clarity: If there is debris…
- Check carbon filter pad/carbon
- Water Flow: If low…
- Inspect airstones for blockage and change if necessary.
- If flow is noticeably reduced, call for service!
Once visual check is complete test temperature :
- Tank should be 45°-50°, if temperature is too high or low, check thermostat setting.
*Note: Thermostat reading may differ from measured holding tank temperature. Adjust as necessary and monitor holding tank temperature allowing 3-4 hours for it to stabilize. Call for service if thermostat is not functioning properly.
- Make sure unit is plugged into the proper outlet.*
*Lobster Tank requires dedicated power source and must have backup power in the event of power outage. Tank can’t be left turned off for long periods of time without losing stock.
Check Tank Salinity:
- Remove Hydrometer from plastic tube.
- Rinse plastic tube and fill it with water from tank.
- Place hydrometer in tube and tap tube lightly so that Hydrometer floats.
- Read scale on tube. Reading should be between 1.020 and 1.025 (1.022 is ideal).
- Reading < 1.020: Add salt
- Reading > 1.025: Drain some water and replace with fresh water.*
*Water should be from dedicated hose not used for soap/washing.
LB Series Adjusting Tank Salinity
When salinity is too low and you need to add salt…
- Never pour new salt into tank if lobsters are present. Use a clean container to dissolve salt
(approx. 1.5 lbs. salt to every 5 gallons of water).
- Always wait for salt to dissolve before taking hydrometer reading.

Lobster Tanks
LB Series Adding Lobster
- Set Salinity.
- Check water temperature is at 45°.
- Before introducing new lobsters, dip each lobster and rinse thoroughly in a bucket of saltwater to remove accumulated debris. (Rinse water should be taken from the established display tank--never use freshwater it will kill them!)
- Add 5 lobsters at a time.
- After use, discard lobster rinse water and replenish. Follow “Setting Tank Salinity” Guidelines.
LB Series Bi-Weekly Maintenance
Change Carbon Filter Pad and Carbon:
- Remove Carbon Filter Tray.
- Remove nylon bag, set aside.
- Discard used carbon and carbon filter pads.
- Rinse out carbon tray.
- Replace bottom carbon filter pad.
- Pour 8 oz. of Black Diamond Premium Activated Carbon into padded tray.
- Cover new carbon with 2nd Carbon Filter Pad.
- Tuck Pad under lip of carbon filter tray
- Cover carbon filter tray with nylon bag and re-install on top of Air Stack Tube
Clogged filters don’t collect waste! Uncollected waste is returned to the tank, reducing efficiency.
Replacing Airstones
- With the system off, remove Carbon Tray. Disconnect white rigid tube from flexible
connector tubing. Remove white rigid tube with airstones attached.
- Test for clogs by blowing through each white rigid tube. If air does not pass through easily, the airstones are clogged and need to be replaced.
- Pull the clogged airstones off the “Y” connector at the end of each rigid white tube.
- Place the new airstones on the open end of each “Y” connector.
- Re-insert white rigid tube into Air Stack Tube and reattach flexible connector tubing.
Do not push airstones all the way to the bottom of the tank
Basic Guidelines
NEVER overload your system (recommended load is 100-125 lbs.)
ALWAYS rinse lobsters in water pulled from tank when adding new.
NEVER rinse lobsters in fresh water, it will kill them!
NEVER feed animals.
NEVER use insecticides near system.
ALWAYS keep a dedicated rag, hose and buckets for Lobster Tank Only.
ALWAYS keep maintenance kit complete with:
- Nylon Filter Bag
- Filter Pads
- Carbon
- Airstones
- Working Thermometer
- Functioning Hydrometer
- Ammonia and Aquarium Test Strips

Lobster Tanks
LB Series Troubleshooting
If entire system abruptly shuts down…
• Reset circuit breaker in main electrical panel.
• Check to make sure unit is plugged in.
• Make sure Master Switch is turned on.
If water turns yellow or odors develop…
• Inspect system for damaged product.
• Replace Carbon in Upper Carbon Tray.
If water flow from Air Stack Tube is reduced…
• Inspect airstones for blockage. Change if necessary.
• Check air line connections.
• Make sure air pump filters are not obstructed. Clean if necessary.
• See that filter bed is not impacted.
If water temperature is too low or too high…
• Check Thermostat setting. (Thermostat reading may differ from measured holding tank temperature. Adjust thermostat as required and monitor holding tank temperature with
thermometer, allow 3-4 hours for temperature to stabilize before checking again.)
• Make sure power cord to Refrigeration Unit is plugged into proper outlet.
• See that Thermostat is at desired temperature level and is not damaged.
• Inspect Intake Vents and Condensing Screen. Clean if necessary.
• Call Service if Thermostat or Refrigeration Unit is malfunctioning.
If you experience product loss shortly after arrival…
• Don’t panic. This may be normal. Remove dead product.
• Check water salinity. Adjust if necessary.
• Monitor temperature carefully. Adjust if necessary.
If a large number of lobsters perish and water is clear...
• Change water and replace carbon immediately.
• Make sure insecticides or other industrial poisons are not being used near tank.
If a large number of lobsters perish and water is hazy...
• Check for restricted bio-filter. Change water and clean BIO-Filter.
• Reduce load (if exceeds recommended capacity 100-125 lbs.).
• Make sure water temperature is not too high. Adjust Thermostat as required and
monitor tank temperature with thermometer allowing 3-4 hours for temperature
to stabilize before checking again.
• Check for Lobster claws, antennae or other product caught under Upper False Bottom.
• Inspect airstones for blockage. Change if necessary.
• Make sure air pump filter is not obstructed. Clean if necessary.
